Clay Keatts Sr.
CASCADE, Va. - Clay Haley Keatts Sr., 75, of 696 Mountain Run Road died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001 at his residence, after several years of declining health.
Born July 5, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of David Thomas Keatts and Callie Lee Moorefield Keatts.
He was married
to Syble Beck Keatts, who survives. He spent most of his life in Cascade where he was a farmer until retiring in 1995. He was a veteran on the U.S. Marines and served in World War II. He was a member of Welcome Baptist Church and the Pittsylvania County Farm Bureau.
Survivors include six sons, Monte Keatts of Danville, Clay Keatts Jr., Samuel Keatts, Thomas Keatts, John Keatts and Jefferson Keatts, all of Cascade; two brothers, Lewis Keatts of Rocky Mount and Elmer Keatts of Newport News; four sisters, Ruth Woodson of Ruffin, N.C., Matilda Brummett and Nancy Owen, both of Danville and Eva McDaniel of Cascade; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Landon Keatts, Charlie Keatts and David Keatts and two sisters, Cynthia Hill and Annie Brooks.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at welcome Baptist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Hussey officiating. Interment
will follow at the Keatts Family cemetery, Rt. 861, Mt. Run Road, Cascade.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel and other times at the residence.
Viola Kidd
DANVILLE, Va. - Viola Gover Kidd, 88, formerly of 1245 Westover Drive died
Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health.
Born Oct. 11, 1912, in Axton, she was the daughter of Bruce McDaniel and Emma Land McDaniel.
She was first married
to George W. Gover Sr., who predeceased her Nov. 6, 1982, and was later married
to James Milton Kidd, who also predeceased her. She spent most of her life in the Westover community where she was a homemaker. She had been living at Riverside Health Care Center and had previously lived at Abingdon Place. She was a member of Arlington Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Jeanette G. Goodson of Danville; two sons, George W. "Skip" Gover Jr. and Roger D. Gover, both of Danville; one sister, Elizabeth Crouch of Martinsville; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by three sisters, Mary Jane Jordan, Geneva Saunders and Bessie Moore and one brother, Albert MCDaniel.
A graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Dr. Samuel Greeson officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Jeanette G. Goodson, 1245 Westover Drive.

Edward Kitchen
DANVILLE, Va. - Edward "Frank" Kitchen, 86, of 401 Girard Street died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at Danville Regional MEdical Center after five months of declining health.
Bonr August 9, 1914, in Ralston, Penn., he was a son of Deives Kitchen and Lena Welch Kitchen.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during World War II. He spent most of his life in Pennsylvania and Danville and worked for Corning Glass Works Inc. He was a member of American Legion Memorial Post #325.
Survivors include three daughters, Eva Willis and Jeanie Adkins, both of Danville and Donna K. Brossettee of California; two sons, Robert Kitchen of Danville and Ritter A. Kitchen of Houston, Texas; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Billy Scearce officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times at the resience of Jeanie Adkins, 153 Summitt Road.
Boisie Marshall Sr.
CHATHAM, Va. - Boisie P. Marshall Sr., 83, of 999 Hickory Road died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at his residence.
Born April 24, 1917, in Jenkins Jones, W.Va., he was a son of Robert and Adena Nash Marshall.
He was married
to Barbara Marshall, who survives. He was a postal clerk and decorated veteran of the United States Army.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include seven daughters, Kathy Logan of Danville, Barbara Artemus of Queens, N.Y., Ophelia Simmons of Las Vegas, JoAnn Drummer and Sherrell McCathern, both of Bronx, N.Y., Jean Yarborough of Jersey City, N.J. and Marilyn Stone of Forestville, Md.; four sons, Boisie P. Marshall Jr. of Craigsville, Cedric Marshall of Elmhurst, N.Y., Kevin Marshall of Danville and Kevin Germany of Clinton, Md.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Henry Hope officiating. Interment
will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens. Military honors will be performed by American Legion Post 29 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Georgia Martin
DANVILLE, Va. - Georgia Hortense Person Martin, 82, of Tamworth Drive died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born Feb. 5, 1918, in Garysburg, N.C., she was a daughter of Willie L. Person and Nadmi Buffalo Person.
She was married
to M.C. Martin, who predeceased her. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, a charter member of Danville Alumni Chapter Delta Sigma Theta Society, a charter member of the Danville Chapter of Jack & Jill of America Inc. and was a member of the Lydia Chapter #74, Order of the Eastern Star, P.H.A.
Survivors include one daughter, Paula Kay Martin Martin Smith of Danville; one stepson, M. Conrad Martin Jr. of Sacramento, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Irene M. Vinson of Columbus, Ohio and Edwina A. Martin of Cleveland, Ohio; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Serenus Churn officiating. Interment
will follow at Oak Hill cemetery.
Harry Payne
HURT, Va. - Harry Edward Payne, 89, of 10524 Blue Ridge Drive died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001 at Elder Care of Franklin County, Rocky Mount.
Born April 29, 1910, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Hopie and Callie Payne.
He was married
to Nancy Payne, who survives. He was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church and was a retired employee of BGF, Altavista.
In addition to his wife of Blackstone, survivors include one son, Willie Payne of Nathalie; two daughters, Brenda Whittler of Altavista and Lucy Chapman of Waterbury, Conn.; one brother, Howard Payne of Gladys; one sister, Cora P. Glass of Hurt and six grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Olive Baptist Church with Dr. Jimmy Tarpley officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.

Elizabeth Poindexter
MONETA, Va. - Elizabeth English Poindexter, 88, of Rt. 1, Moneta died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, at Frindship Manor Nursing Home, Roanoke.
Born Oct. 5, 1913, in Franklin County, she was the daughter of James English and Virgie Casey English.
She was married
to Bill Poindexter.
She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by a number of grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives.
She was predeceased by two sons, Pete English and Elsie English.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at the Chapel of Miller Funeral Home with Elder Walter Coles officiating.
Interment will follow at Elba cemetery, Gretna.

James Anderson Soyars
DANVILLE, Va. - James Anderson Soyars, age 65, of 192 Westover Lane, died Tuesday afternoon January 9, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Soyars was born in the Bachelors Hall community of Pittsylvania County on May 16, 1935, a son of the late Thomas Lee Soyars, Sr., and Georgia Ray Childress Soyars.
He was married
to Jean Scearce Soyars who survives.
Mr. Soyars attended Brosville High School and had made his home on Westover Lane for 37 years. He was a sheet metal worker working with S & H Metal Shop before becoming self employed, and was of the baptist faith.
Survivors in addition to his wife of Danville include one daughter: Karen Soyars Butts of Danville, and two sons: Kelly S. Soyars and Keith M. Soyars both of Danville, and two sisters: Permelia Soyars Mangrum of Bachelors Hall, and Mary Alice Harris of Danville, and two brothers: Ford Soyars of Bachelors Hall, and Harold "Wimpy" Soyars of Danville, and four grandchildren: Gavin Butts, Carla Soyars, Kody Soyars, and Kasey Soyars, and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.
He was predeceased by four brothers: Grover "Snooks" Soyars, Tommy Lee Soyars, Jr., Richard Soyars, and Hiram Soyars, and also predeceased by two sisters: Georgia Ray Soyars and Clarice DeHart.
Funeral services will be conducted at 4:00 P.M. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. William J. Soyars and Rev. R.J. Barber, Jr., and interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 7:00 - 8:30 P.M., and at the residence of his daughter, Karen Butts, at 4061 Keswick Drive, off of the Mount Cross Road, at other times.

Jane Barker
CLOVER, Va. - Jane Bomar Barker, 67, of 1050 Petes Trail, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Dec. 17, 1933 in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Luthar Fleming Bomar and Maggie Bomar.
She was married
to Marvin Barker, who survives.
She was a member of Hunting Creek Baptist Church where she was active in the church choir. She was a member of the Halifax Woman's Club and was a homemaker.
In addition to her husband of Clover, survivors include three daughters, Deborah Sizemore of South Boston, Susan Butterworth of Richmond and Betty Schutte of Winchester, one brother, David Earl Bomar of Richmond and five grandchildren.
She was predeceased by four brothers, William "Tim" Bomar, James Garnett Bomar Sr., Ernest Thornton Bomar and Luther Haley Bomar.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Mt. Laurel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ann Tang and the Rev. H.V. Conner officiating. Interment
will be at Hunting Creek Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Sunday after the service at Hunting Creek Baptist Church.

Jesse Burton
DANVILLE, Va. - Jesse William Burton, 90, formerly of Grove St., died Thursday, January 11, 2001 at Piney Forest Health Care Center after eight months of declining health.
Born May 27, 1910 in Milton, N.C., he was a son of Joseph and Maggie Nola Yarbrough Burton.
He was married
April 27, 1936 to Willie Hunter Hardy Burton, who predeceased him on June 1, 1996.
Mr. Burton lived most of his life in Danville where he worked as a manager for the former Cat & Fiddle Grocery Stores of Danville prior to working in sales for S&B Motor Company until his retirement. Mr. Burton was an active member of Main Street United Methodist Church as long as his health permitted. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Survivors include one son, Douglas W. Burton; one brother, Bruce Burton; one grandson, Douglas W. Burton Jr.; two granddaughters, Mary Burton Crane and Jennifer J. Burton, and two great-grandchildren, all of Danville.
He was predeceased by three brothers and one sister.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, January 13, at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Reverend Gary Milstead and the Rev. Dana Hunt officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel, and other times at the residence of his son Douglas W. Burton, 3933 Westover Drive.
