CHATHAM, Va. - Russell Fitzgerald, 77, of 276 Weal Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 5, 1923 in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of John and Eva Fitzgerald.
He was married
to Eula Fitzgerald, who survives.
He was a member of Cherrystone Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons, Russell Fitzgerald Jr. of Mt. Vernon, N.Y., Conwallace Fitzgerald of Chatham and James Fitzgerald of Danville; three daughters, Pearl Fitzgerald of Atlanta, Ga., Delosie Harris and Arletha Fitzgerald, both of Chatham; four brothers, Irvin Fitzgerald and Wilmer Fitzgerald, both of Chatham, John Fitzgerald of Youngstown, Ohio and William Fitzgerald of Mt. Vernon, N.Y.; two sisters, Pearl Perry of Chatham and Bessie Gregory of Toledo, Ohio; 31 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Cherrystone Baptist Church with the Rev. Floyd Jones officiating. Interment
will be in the Fitzgerald Family cemetery. Viewing will be held from 2-7 p.m. Saturday.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Ellen Hawkins
LYNCHBURG, Va. - Ellen Hawkins, 89, of Westminister-Canterbury, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001 at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born Dec. 9, 1911 in Marion, she was a daughter of Rachel Sexton and William W. Hawkins.
Most of her life was connected with schools and she served as Alumnae Director at Stratford College, Danville and Chatham Hall, Chatham. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Marion. One of her major interests was the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History of which she was a member.
She is survived by one brother, Edward R. Hawkins of St. Francisville, La.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Rev. Buddy Miller officiating. Private burial will follow in Round Hill cemetery.

Charles Hightower
NEW YORK - Charles Hightower, 50, of New York, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001 at Holland Hospital.
Born May 15, 1950 in Caswell County, he was a son of Charles Hightower Sr., who predeceased him, and Mamie Grange Hightower, who survives.
He was married
to Deborah Hightower, who survives.
In addition to his mother and wife of New York, survivors include five children, Chanel Hightower, Eric Hightower, Charles Hightower, Keith Hightower and Peanut Hightower, two sisters, Diana Wimbush of New York, N.Y. and Josephine Hightower of Hempstead, N.Y., one brother, Ray Hightower of Hempstead, N.Y. and six grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Macedonia A.M.E. Church in Milton, N.C. with the Rev. Clyde Long officiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery. Viewing will be held from 2-8 p.m. Friday at Plenty Funeral Home Chapel, Semora, N.C.
Ethel Jones
DANVILLE, Va. - Ethel Lee Jones, 59, of 490 Jefferson St., died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001 at her residence.
Born Nov. 15, 1941 in Danville, she was a daughter of Benjamin and Betty Mae Brandon Jones.
Survivors include three daughters, Tonnie Burton, Florine Guy and Sharon Mayo, all of Danville; three sons, Calvin Jones, Lamont Jones and Andrea Jones, all of Danville; one sister, Lena Dupree of East Orange, N.J.; one brother, Ben Jones of Bridgeport, Conn; 12 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Bishop Arthur Linder officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park cemetery.

Catherine McClain
LEXINGTON, Va. - Catherine Louise "Lucy" Fowler McClain, 66, of Swearing Creek Dr., died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001 at Community General Hospital after several years of declining health.
Born April 27, 1934 in Danville, she was a daughter of Edward and Catherine Weeks Fowler.
She was married
to Charles B. "Chip" McClain, who predeceased her August 2000.
She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include four daughters, Charlene Spivey of the residence, Sherri Hall of Thomasville, Mildred Ann Watts of Hickory, Ky. and Annette Bailey of Pembroke Ky, one half sister, Gladys Gallimore of Lexington, 16 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and 17 great-great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Davidson Funeral Home in Lexington with the Rev. James Causey officiating. Entombment will follow at Forest Hill Memorial Park Mausoleum.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Virginia Myrtle Nunn
DANVILLE, Va. - Virginia Myrtle Nunn, 84, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001 at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born May 4, 1916 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Richard Wilson Davis and Sallie Ann Foriline Davis.
She was married
to Buford William Nunn, who predeceased her Aug. 31, 1971.
She was retired from Dan River and was a member of the Dan River Retirees Club and the Rebekah Lodge. She was also a member of Schoolfield Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Jean Nunn Douglas of Danville; one son, John Wilson Nunn of Danville; one brother, Richard Davis of Lynchburg; four sisters, Garnett D. Hines, Eula D. Hines, Ruby D. McCormick, and Adelaide D. Lester, all of Danville; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Schoolfield cemetery with the Rev. Kenneth Clark officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, 466 West Main St., Apt. 1.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Danville Life Saving Crew.

HURT, Va. - Hamet Russell Rowland, 91, of Hurt, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001 at Autumn Care of Altavista.
Born Nov. 21, 1909 in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Jessie Green Rowland and Lucy Rowland Rowland.
He was married
to Elsie Love Rowland, who predeceased him.
He was a former mayor of Hurt, a charter member of the Hurt-Motely Ruritan Club, a self-employed carpenter, a graduate of Gretna High School and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one son, Eric Keith Rowland of Gadsden, Ala.; three daughters, Nancy Crews of Hurt, Yvonne Munden of Sugar Land, Texas and Emily Witt of Altavista; two brothers, Herbert Rowland of Gretna and Carlton Rowland of Waynesboro; three sisters, Myrtle Morris of Jacksonville, N.C., Helene Dalton and Irene Rowland, both of Gretna; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one son, Hamet Leon Rowland, two sisters, Pearl Mitchell and Edith Robertson and one granddaughter, Martha Ellen Witt.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Colbert-Moran Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Lynn Marstin officiating. Interment
will follow at Midway Baptist Church cemetery.

DANVILLE, Va. - Raven Chyenne Whaley Clay was stillborn Friday morning January 12, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
She was the daughter of Billy Clay and Rhonda Whaley, both of whom survive.
In addition to her parents, survivors include her Godmother: Beckie Pruitt of Keeling, and maternal Grandmother: Inez Hicks of the Martinsville Highway, and maternal Grandfather: Roger Whaley, Sr., of Burlington, North Carolina, and paternal Grandmother: Donna Rose of Danville, and paternal Grandfather: Billy Clay, Sr., of Danville, and maternal step Grandfather: Gene Hicks of Martinsville Highway, and paternal step Grandfather: Berry Rose of Danville, one half sister: Brandy Easley of Pelham, North Carolina, and three uncles: Rodney Whaley, Roger Whaley & Randy Whaley.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Roger L. Ewing. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

Rosa Cole
HALIFAX, Va. - Rosa Lloyd Cole, 81, of 1065 East Oak Hill Drive died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born April 27, 1919, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Ben Lloyd and Kate Lloyd.
She was married
to Willie Cole, who predeceased her. She was employed as a waitress and was a member of Ash Avenue Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Archie Lloyd of Somerset, Ken.; one sister, Frances Seamster of Halifax; one brother, Billy Lloyd of Madison Heights; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Richard Saunders officiating. Interment
will follow at Halifax Memorial Gardens.

Thomas McLaughlin Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Thomas ‘Cap’ McLaughlin Sr., 73, of 151 White St., died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 30, 1927, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Wade McLaughlin and Julie T. McLaughlin.
He was married
to Helen McLaughlin, who survives. He was employed at Dan River Mills.
In addition to his wife of Danville, survivors include five sons, William R. McLaughlin of Greensboro, N.C., Thomas L. McLaughlin, Patrick H. McLaughlin, Clarence McLaughlin and Howard McLaughlin, all of Danville; one stepson, Michael Graves of Danville; one daughter, Alma G. Taylor of Danville; two brothers, Patrick McLaughlin and Henry McLaughlin, both of Danville; one sister, Laura Tarpley of Danville and five grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. Thomas Johnson officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.

Kenneth Payne
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Kenneth A. Payne, 67, of the 3700 block of North Landing Road died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at his residence.
Born in Danville, he was a son of Worth Clarence Payne and Junia C. Payne, who survives.
He was married
to Sherleen R. Payne, who survives. He retired from the United States Army as a machinist mate chief and served in the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War. He was a member of the Costal Community Church, the Princess Anne Masonic Lodge #25, the Norfolk Scottish Rite Bodies and the Khedive Shrine Temple.
In addition to his wife and mother of Virginia Beach, survivors include one daughter, Debra Warren of Virginia beach; one son, Kenneth S. Payne of Virginia Beach; three brothers, Archie Payne of Danville, Walter Payne of Woolwine and Ervin Payne of Slidell, La. and five grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one brother, William Lon Payne.
A funeral will be held 6 p.m. Sunday at Christ Church with the Rev. Hank Brooks officiating.
The family will receive friends from 5-6 p.m. at the church prior to the service and other times at the residence.
A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Mount Vernon Baptist Church cemetery, Axton.
