Raymond Talley Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Raymond Ashley Talley Sr., 77, of 145 North Ave., died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 20, 1923 in Danville, he was a son of William Cabell and Maggie Ayers Talley.
He was married
Oct. 31, 1947 to Mildred Smith Talley, who survives.
He lived most of his life in Danville and was a retired electrician.
He was a member of College Park Baptist Church. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 19.
In addition to his wife of the home, survivors include two sons, Raymond Ashley Talley Jr. of Moneta and Daniel Wayne Talley of Danville, one brother, James Talley of Danville and three grandchildren.
He was predeceased by three brothers, William Cabell Talley Jr., Woodrow Talley and Earl Talley, and one sister, Mildred T. Barbour.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Jim Hewitt officiating. Interment
will be in Oak Ridge cemetery, South Boston.
The family will receive friends from 4-5:30 Sunday at Townes Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Lewis Terry
PENHOOK, Va. - Lewis Edward Terry, 63, of 2589 Ramsey Memorial Road died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at his residence.
Born April 13, 1937, in Franklin County, he was a son of Willie H. Terry and Annie Craighead Terry.
He was a retired employee of the J.P. Stevens Company, Rocky Mount, and was a member of the Rising Sun Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Lewis E. Terry Jr. of Washington, D.C.; one daughter, Cassandra M. Richmond of Washington, D.C.; four sisters, Susie Terry and Roberta Terry, both of Penhook, Gearldine Davis of Glade Hill and Shirley Williams of Washington, D.C.; two brothers, John Terry and Ray Terry, both of Penhook and one grandson.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Robert Terry and James Terry.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Monday at the Rising Sun Baptist Church with the Rev. R.D. Wade officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Sunday at the church and other times at the residence.

John Whittle II
CHATHAM, Va. - John D. Whittle II, 72, of 500 Mill Creek Road died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 29, 1928, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of John D. Whittle I and Rebecca Davis Whittle.
He was married
to Ida F. Whittle, who predeceased him. He was a member of Cherrystone Baptist Church, where he was a member of the deacon board and was a Sunday school teacher. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was retired from Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company.
Survivors include four sons, John D. Whittle III of Danville, Anthony Whittle Sr. of Richmond, Derrick Whittle Sr. of Fieldale and Elton Whittle Sr. of Chicago; two daughters, Sandra Jeffcoat of Seattle and Sabrina Perry of Platka, Fla.; one brother, Lenward Whittle of Danville; one sister, Dorothy Whittle of Danville; 17 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Cherrystone Baptist Church with the Rev. Floyd O. Jones.
Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
A viewing will be held from 2-7 p.m. Sunday at Howerton Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the residence.

Eva Boone
DANVILLE, Va. - Eva Terry Boone, 46, of 152 Swanson Street died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at her residence.
Born June 19, 1955, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Thelma Plunkett, who survives.
She was married
to Stanley Boone, who survives. She had been employed with Dan River Inc. before a decline in health.
In addition to her mother and husband, survivors include one son, William Terry, and one sister, Edna Plunkett, both of Danville.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with Elder George Evans officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Rebecca Burgess
KEELING, Va. - Rebecca Ferguson Burgess, 71, of 6004 Slatesville Road died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C., after a sudden illness.
Born March 13, 1929, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Daniel Robert Ferguson and Juliette Thomas Ferguson.
She was married
to James Thomas Burgess, who survives, on April 17, 1948. She was a Home Base Sitter for Social Services and was a member of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church. She was a member of the Margaret Hankins Homemakers Club.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Diane B. Oswald of Java and Marie B. Hawker of Keeling; three sons, Malcolm T. Burgess, Wayne E. Burgess and Lester J. Burgess, all of Callands; two sisters, Ruth Dalton and Erby Dalton, both of Keeling; 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one son, William ‘Billy’ R. Burgess.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Barker Funeral Home with the Rev. Herman Absher officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Anice Dodson
DANVILLE, Va. - Anice Clarke Adams Dodson, 96, of 1111 Main street, formerly of 145 Hawthorne Drive died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 29, 1904, in Swansonville, she was the daughter of Samuel Vester Adams and Mary Ellen Tarpley Adams.
On July 19, 1926, she was married
to Cephas Willard Dodson, who predeceased her Feb. 12, 1968. She was educated in county schools, Harrisonburg State Teachers College and the Teachers College of Columbia University. She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church where she served as a trustee and member of the Official Board for many years and was an active member of the United Methodist Women. She was also a charter member of the Forest Hills Garden Club and the Wednesday Club.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Randall of Atlanta and Anne Dodson Williams of Danville; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Main Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gary Milstead and the Rev. Dana Hunt officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Townes Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Anne Dodson Williams, 435 Linden Place.

Flossie Guthrie
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Flossie Comer Guthrie, 96, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Oct. 20, 1904, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Charlie Peter Comer and Nora Lee Gravitt Comer.
She was married
to Louis Robert Guthrie. She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Tuesday Circle.
Survivors include one niece, Harriett Talley Lowder of Columbus, Ohio and two nephews, Joe Talley and Sammy Comer, both of South Boston.
A funeral will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Doug Martin officiating. Interment
will follow at Oak Ridge cemetery.

Leon Johnson
RINGGOLD, Va. - Leon Johnson, 64, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 16, 1936, in Caswell County, N.C., he was a son of Clarence Johnson and Julia S. Johnson.
He was married
to Lessie Brandon Johnson, who predeceased him. He attended Caswell county Public Schools and worked at Lorillard Tobacco Company for many years.
Survivors include three daughters, Laura Dee Johnson, Doris Marie Johnson and Vanessa Ann Johnson, all of Danville; one son, Danny Lee Brandon of Danville; three sisters, Sara McGhee of Semora, N.C., Mae Sue Winstead of Milton, N.C. and Lottie Washington of New York; one foster sister, Dorothy J. McCain of Semora, N.C.; three brothers, Clarence Johnson of Milton, N.C., John Allen Johnson of Yanceyville, N.C. and Richard Johnson of New York; two foster brothers, Charlie Elliot of Charlotte, N.C., and Larry Elliot of Semora, N.C.; one adopted daughter, Holly Richardson; and six grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Macedonia A.M.E. Church, Milton, N.C., with the Rev. Clyde Long officiating. Interment

Sadie Cox
DANVILLE, Va. - Sadie Moran Cox, 91, formerly of Pelham, N.C., died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Nov. 1, 1909, in Floyd County, she was the daughter of Clarence Moran and Ettero Compton Moran.
She was married
to Calvin Simpson Cox, who predeceased her May 1, 1995. She lived most of her life in Pelham, N.C. and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one daughter, Lois C. Lewis of Danville; one son, Ronnie Cox of Reidsville, N.C.; two brothers, Sebert Moran of Roanoke and Bruce Moran of Danville; one sister, Veda Cook of Danville; 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one son, Leon Cox, one daughter, Adell Cox and one grandson.
A graveside service will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday at Lively Stones Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Michael Kent officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Lois C. Lewis, 250 Briarcliff Lane, Danville.
J. Wesley Scarce Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - John Wesley Scarce Jr., 80, of 154 Clarendon Circle died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 27, 1920, in Danville, he was a son of John Wesley Scarce Sr. and Bessie Smiley Scarce.
On April 18, 1952, he was married
to Lucy F. Scarce, who survives. He was a member of Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Jonathan Bennett officiating. A private interment will follow at Mountain View cemetery.
