Sam Miller
GRETNA, Va. - Deacon Sam J. Miller, 96, of 301 Payne St., died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, in Gretna Health Care Center.
Born Feb. 25, 1904, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Henry and Martha White Miller.
He was first married
to Nannie Dickerson, who predeceased him, and then to Lina Moon Miller, who survives.
He was a member of the Mt. Airy Baptist Church, were he served on the Board of Deacons.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by a son, John Henry Miller of Chatham; a daughter, Betty Fitzgerald of Gretna; two stepsons, Herbert Moon and Douglas Moon, both of Gretna; two stepdaughters, Catherine Tucker of Gretna and Linda Thompson of Danville; a sister, Rachel Mason of Chester, Pa.; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; 17 step-grandchildren; a host of step-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Harland and Morgan Miller ; and six sisters, Daisy Glass, Mary Miller, Mandy Roach, Rosavelt Coles, Flora Pope and Florence Sanders.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Mt. Airy Baptist Church with the Rev. R. P. King officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Miller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mary Mobley
DANVILLE, Va. - Mary “Sugar” Griffith Mobley, 87, formerly of Elizabeth Street Extension, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center after several months of declining health.
Born Feb. 2, 1913, in the Stokesland community of Danville, she was the daughter of Jesse James Griffith and Helen Stallings Griffith.
She was married
to Edgar M. Mobley, who died Sept. 9, 1995.
She had spent most of her life in Danville, where she operated a well-drilling and construction business before retiring. She was also a member of Forest Lawn Baptist Church.
Survivors include a sister, Rosa G. Layne of White Hill, N.C.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Melvin M. Griffith and Jesse “Scoop” Griffith.
A funeral will be held 4 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Homer Bowman and the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating. Interment
will follow in Schoolfield cemetery.
The family will receive friends at 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home Saturday.
Robert Sypher
OCEAN VIEW, N.J. - Robert M. Sypher, 88, of Marmora, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001 at the Lutheran Home in Ocean View.
Born in Leonia, he had lived in Closter, Haworth, and Danville, Va. for 30 years before moving to Marmora, two and a half years ago.
He was married
to Helen O. Sypher, who survives.
He worked in elevator sales for Westbrook Elevator Co. in Danville for 50 years before retiring in 1980.
In addition to his wife of Marmora, survivors include three sons, Richard B. Sypher of Sea Cliff, N.Y., Lewis M. Sypher of Marmora and Robert E. Sypher of Media, Pa.; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 10 a.m. Monday at the Godfrey Funeral Home of Palermo, 644 South Shore Road, Palermo. The family will receive friends at 9 a.m. Monday.
Burial will follow in George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus, N.J.

Reba Adams
DANVILLE, Va. - Reba White Adams, 91, of 155 Orchard Drive, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after one year of declining health. and a five-month stay in Roman Eagle.
Born May 26, 1909, in Danville, she was the daughter of the late Charlie H. White and the late Lena Shelton White.
She was married
to Chesley Samuel Adams Sr., who died Dec. 1, 1977.
Mrs. Adams had lived most of her life in Danville, where she had worked for the former Belk-Leggett Company as a sales clerk until her retirement with over 40 years of service. She was an active member of the Afton Road Primitive Baptist Church as long as her health permitted.
Survivors include a son, Chesley Samuel Adams Jr. and daughter-in-law Ruth Adams, both of Roanoke, Va.; a nephew Skip White and wife Linda White, both of Raleigh, N.C.; a cousin, Sybil Myers of Reidsville, N.C.; 4 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, 4 stepgrandchildren and 9 stepgreat-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one sister, one brother and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Afton Road Primitive Baptist Church with the Elder Danny Parker and Elder Thomas Mann officiating. Interment
will follow in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and at other times at the residence, 155 Orchard Drive.

Sharone Beverley
RICHMOND, Va. - Sharone Hawker Beverley, 55, of 2201 Woodmont Dr., died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at the home of her parents in Sutherlin, Va. after declining in health for the last six months.
Born Dec. 6, 1945, in Danville, she was the daughter of Robert Dudley Hawker and Frances Redd Hawker, who both survive.
Mrs. Beverley had lived all of her life in the Sutherlin Community of Pittsylvania County and Richmond, Va. She was a graduate of Dan River High School Class of 1964. She was employed by the State of Virginia in the Medicade Division. Mrs. Beverley attended the Old Mill Primitive Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents of Sutherlin, survivors include a daughter, Kelley W. Ellington of Richmond; a grandson, Taylor Bryant Ellington of Richmond; three brothers, Robert Dudley Hawker Jr. of Charlotte, N.C. and Glen Patton Hawker and William Henry Hawker, both of Sutherlin; two sisters, Debbie Hawker Scarce of Sutherlin and Robin Hawker Pruitt of Pelham, N.C.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Elder Danny Parker officiating. Interment
will follow at the Hawker Family cemetery in Sutherlin.

Carlton Brown
ENCINO, Calif. - Carlton Neal Brown, 61, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001 after one year of declining health.
Born Feb. 6, 1939, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Witcher Norman and Mary Virginia Brown.
He was married
to Luisa Brown.
He attended Schoolfield High School and was a member of Piney Forest Methodist Church.
He moved to the west coast where he was a supervisor for Jaffa Cosmetic Company until his retirement.
Survivors include a son, Wesley Brown of Norcross, Ga.; a daughter, Tina Brown Webb of Hawaii; three sisters, all of Danville, Doris B. Wrenn, Louise B. Turpin and Peggie Taylor, all of Danville; a brother, J.L. "Pete" Brown of Danville and six grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, William Norman Brown, and a sister, Frances B. Phelps.
A private memorial service and burial was held Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001 in Encino.
George Cain
DANVILLE, Va. - George Franklin Cain, age 82, of 4042 Suburban Dr., died Thursday Jan. 18, 2001 at Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Mr. Cain was born in Bloomington, Indiana on Aug. 3, 1918, the son of the late Clyde Clarence Cain and Nora Icis Duncan Cain.
He was married
to Thelma Davis Cain, who survives.
He was a veteran of the Army.
Mr. Cain had made his home in Danville area for the past 12 years. He attended Riverview Baptist Church and worked in the stove covering and chainsaw business, where he worked in maintenance for McCulloch chainsaw.
Survivors in addition to his wife of the residence include one son, John Steven Cain Sr. of Whitmell; one brother, Harold E. Cain of Torrence, Calif.; one grandson, John Steven Cain Jr. of Whitmell; one granddaughter, Tina Wilkerson of Whitmell; and two great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, Clarence Cain.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Riverview Baptist Church by the Rev. Duane Blevins and the Rev. Johnny Jones. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens where military honors will be performed by the American Legion Dan River Post #1097 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends at Swicegood Funeral Home Saturday from 7-8 p.m., and at other times at the residence off of 29 North.
Hampton Cooper Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Hampton Stuart Cooper Sr., 74, of 1645 Leemont Court, died at his home Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001 after 13 months of declining health.
Born Oct. 6, 1926, in Schoolfield, he was the son of William Fred Cooper and Bessie McPeak Cooper.
He was married
to Frances Pugh Cooper, who survives.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Italy during World War II.
He spent most of his life in Danville, where he retired from Life of Virginia Insurance Company as a sales representative after 39 years.
He was a member of Rivermont Baptist Church, president of Lynay Sunday School Class and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors in addition to his wife include a son, H. Stuart Cooper Jr. of Richmond; and two brothers, W.F. Cooper Jr. of Richmond and Hugh G. "Buddy" Cooper of Bristol.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jack Waddell officiating. Burial will follow at the Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday, and at other times at the residence.

Walter "Buddy" Dryman Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Walter Raleigh "Buddy" Dryman Jr., 78, 1005 Lanier Avenue, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at the Riverside Health Care Center after three weeks of declining health and a two-week stay in the hospital.
Born Feb. 8, 1922, in Danville, he was the son of the late Walter Raleigh Dryman Sr. and the late Villa Stone Dryman.
On April 12, 1941, he was married
to Lorayne M. Dryman, who survives.
He lived most of his life in Danville, and he was retired from Womack Electric Supply Company. He was a member of Riveroak Church of God where he served as an usher and he was an active member of the V.I.P. group.
He was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Merchant Marines.
He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 325, where he served on the Honor Guard. He was a life member of the Danville Life Saving Crew, where he had served as past captain, and as the past vice president of the 5th District. He was a member of Duck's Unlimited, where he had served as past president.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Walter R. "Wally" Dryman III and his wife, Barbara A. Dryman, of Blacksburg; two daughters, Vickie D. George and her husband, Wesley E. George III, of Ridgeway and Toni D. Ryan and her husband, Waine Ryan, of Danville; three granddaughters, Kimberly E. Roberts and her husband, Greg Roberts, of Danville, Jessica M. Dryman of Blacksburg and Katy L. Dryman of Blacksburg; three grandsons, Shaun P. Ryan of Centreville, Timothy W. Ryan of Danville and Walter Raleigh "Buddy" Dryman IV of Blacksburg; two great-grandsons, Jason H. Scearce and Justin H. Scearce, both of Danville and one great-granddaughter, Olivia R. Roberts of Danville.
He was predeceased by a sister, Lucille D. White.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Tim Nuckles, the Rev. Freddy Vicks and Danville Life Saving Crew Chaplain Odell Tate officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens with military honors performed by the American Legion Post No. 325 Honor Guard.
