Barbara Hartness

DANVILLE, Va. - Barbara Jean Hartness, 23, of 325 Gray St. died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at University Hospital, Charlottesville.
Survivors include one son, Keynon T. Motley of the residence; mother, Judith Rosser of the residence; three brothers, Lacy Hartness Jr. and Darrell Hartness, both of Danville and Kenneth Rosser of Greensboro, N.C.; two sisters, Janet Boles and Chrystal Rosser, both of Greensboro, N.C.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Perry-Spencer Funeral Home Chapel, Eden, N.C. Interment icon will follow at Greenview cemetery, Reidsville, N.C.
Perry-Spencer Funeral Home, Eden, N.C., is in charge of arrangements.

Deborah Horton

RINGGOLD, Va. - Deborah Rieson Horton, 52, of Davis Drive died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 2, 1949, in Fieldale, she was the daughter of James T. and Nancy H. Rieson, who survive.
She was married to Alfred R. Horton, who survives.
She was a native of Fieldale and worked for Danville's electric department for 10 years.
In addition to her husband of Ringgold and her parents of Fieldale, survivors include two daughters, Angela Parrish of Danville and Wendy Bowman of Ringgold; three sons, Alfred R. Horton Jr. and Robert W. Horton, both of Kissimmee, Fla., and James Roy Horton of Ringgold; three sisters, Linda West of Patrick Springs, Terry Turner of Richmond and Sherry Clark of Collinsville; a brother, James T. Rieson Jr. of Fieldale and seven grandchildren.
A private memorial service will be held.
The family will receive friends anytime at 421 Davis Drive in Ringgold.
Contributions may be made to the Danville Rescue Squad or Ringgold Fire Department.

Abraham Lanier

MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Abraham Lanier, 64, of 1607 Spruce St. died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at Martinsville Memorial Hospital.
Born Sept. 19, 1936, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Jimmie Dee Lanier and Beatrice Thompson Lanier.
He was married to Joan Lanier, who predeceased him. He was a member of Shockoe Baptist Church and was retired from Durham Hosiery in Danville.
Survivors include one son, Larry Stone of Chatham; three brothers, Tunnie Lanier, Archie Walker and Elmer Adams, all of Danville; three sisters, Lovelan Glass of Hortford, Conn., Lila Field of New Rochell, N.Y. and Lueberta Moore of Norfolk and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Monday at Shockoe Baptist Church with the Rev. Floyd O. Jones officiating. Interment icon will follow at the church cemetery.
A viewing will be held from 4-7 p.m. Sunday at Howerton Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Tunnie Lanier, Hwy 29, Danville.
Howerton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Texie Lepley

DANVILLE, Va. - Texie Powell Lepley, 87, of 218 Halifax Street died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health.
Born Nov. 2, 1913, in Finley, N.C., she was the daughter of John Thomas Powell and Josephine Curtis Powell.
She was married to William Carl Lepley, who predeceased her August 2, 1979. She spent most of her life in Danville and was retired from Dan River Inc. She was a member of The Tabernacle.
Survivors include three sons, Tyree Pruitt of Bellaire, Md., Danny Martin Pruitt of Baltimore, Md. and Dwight Ganer Lepley of Danville; two daughters, Anna Pruitt Rigney and Evelyn Mae Lepley Walker, both of Danville; one brother, Odell Powell of Jacksonville, Fla.; one sister, Trivlie Towery of Warrenton; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at The Tabernacle with the Rev. Lamaar Mooneyham officiating. Interment icon will follow at Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Mary Mobley

DANVILLE, Va. - Mary "Sugar" Griffith Mobley, 87, formerly of Elizabeth Street Extension, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center after several months of declining health.
Born Feb. 2, 1913, in the Stokesland community of Danville, she was the daughter of Jesse James Griffith and Helen Stallings Griffith.
She was married to Edgar M. Mobley, who died Sept. 9, 1995.
She had spent most of her life in Danville, where she operated a well-drilling and construction business before retiring. She was also a member of Forest Lawn Baptist Church.
Survivors include a sister, Rosa G. Layne of White Hill, N.C.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Melvin M. Griffith and Jesse "Scoop" Griffith.
A funeral will be held 4 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Homer Bowman and the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating. Interment icon will follow in Schoolfield cemetery.
The family will receive friends at 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home Saturday.

James Pannell

NORFOLK, Va. - James Edward Pannell, 72, formerly of Pittsville, died recently at Norfolk General Hospital.
Born March 11, 1927, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Jimmi Lee Pannell, who survives, and Lucille Pannell.
He was married to Doris Pannell, who survives.
In addition to his father of Chatham and wife of Norfolk, survivors include two daughters, Hope Panell and Charity Pannell, both of Norfolk; one son, James Pannell Jr. of Norfolk; five brothers, Curtis Pannell, Morris Pannell and Sylvester Pannell, all of Gretna, Lewis Pannell of Danville and Len Pannell of Chatham; five sisters, Shirley Jefferson and Doreacy Logan, both of Chatham, Alberta Royal and Stella Bennett of Gretna and Ammie Johnson of Pittsville.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Monday at the Chapel of Miller Funeral Home with Bishop Edward Crews officiating. Interment icon will follow at Burning Busch Holiness Church cemetery, Pittsville.
Miller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy Wenstly

ALTON, Va. - Dorothy Pointer Wenstly, 91, of 1241 Williamson Road died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 17, 1909, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Kelly and NaCissus Pointer.
She was married to Eddie Wenstly, who predeceased her. She attended the public schools of Halifax and was a member of Greater Brandon Chapel Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Mary Ewell of Alton; one sister, Nannie Johnson of Alton; one brother, Johnnie Pointer of Milton, N.C.; one grandchild and one great-grandchild.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Greater Brandon Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. H.R. Surgeon officiating. Interment icon will follow at the church cemetery.
A viewing will be held 12-8 p.m. Sunday at Plenty Funeral Home Chapel.

George Lee Betterton

JAVA, Va. - George Lee Betterton, 62, of 1840 Halifax Road died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C.
Born August 3, 1938, in Halifax County, he was a son of Elmo Thornton Betterton and Berta Talbott Betterton.
He was a member of Mulberry Baptist Church, Nathalie.
Survivors include one sister, Mae B. Yeatts of Java and three brothers, Wesley B. Betterton, David H. Betterton and Wayne G. Betterton, all of Nathalie.
He was predeceased by one brother, Roy T. Betterton.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mulberry Baptist Church with the Rev. Bob Watts and the Rev. Jerry Jordan officiating. Interment icon will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Monday at Scott Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Ryland Yeatts, 1840 Halifax Road, Java.

May Burnett

DANVILLE, Va. - Virginia May Burnett, 83, of 1152 Franklin Turnpike died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center after one day of declining health.
Born October 16, 1917, she was the daughter of Charles Vaden Haynes and Lottie May Davis Haynes.
Mrs. Burnett had resided in Danville most of her life. She was of the Baptist Faith. Mrs. Burnett was employed by Dan River Mills, Inc. retiring in 1982.
Survivors include one daughter, Judy Burnett of Charlotte, N.C.; four sisters, Irene Murphy of Charlotte, N.C., Vivian Durham of Pelham, N.C. and Nancy Henderson and Katherine Ferguson, both of Danville, and one granddaughter, Tiffany Williams of Roanoke.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Thelma Haynes Porter and Garland Haynes Dodson and one brother, Charles V. Haynes, Jr.
A graveside funeral will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 23, 2001, at Mountain View cemetery with the Reverend Dr. Thomas Evans officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel.

James Coleman

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - James D. Coleman, 62, of Union Church Road died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at his residence.
Born June 26, 1938, in Halifax County, he was a son of Phillip J. Coleman Sr. and Daisy Lee Davis Coleman.
He was married to Helen Mouzon Coleman, who survives. He was a member of Mt. Grove Missionary Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, Jeffrey Coleman; one sister, Lucy Veney and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Grove Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Arthur Crews officiating. Interment icon will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday at Dunn & Sons Funeral Home, N. Main St., and other times at the residence.
