DANVILLE, Va. - Elsie Lee Shaner Saunders, 96, from Danville Va., formerly of Chatham, died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at the Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Oct. 17, 1904, in Madison Heights, she was the daughter of George Washington Shaner and Eddie Saintclare Reynolds Shaner.
She was first married
to Robert Lee Wooldridge, who predeceased her in 1941. She later married
Dewey Earl Saunders who died in 1992. She was a member of Chatham Baptist Church and also a member of Morgon Johnson Chapter No. 44 Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the Sylvania Garden Club of Chatham.
Survivors include one daughter Betty W. Haley of Danville; one son, Robert Lee Wooldridge of Danville; two brothers, Ralph E. Shaner of Lynchburg and Kenneth of Shaner of Concord and seven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one son, Roy Milton Wooldridge and two brothers, Leslie Shaner, and Alvin Shaner
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Hillcrest Burial Park with the Rev. Wayne Reece officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, 278 Major Court, Danville, Va.

Myrtle Tapscott
DANVILLE, Va. - Myrtle Tapscott, 89, of 126 Mabin Street died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001 at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 26, 1911, in Greensboro, N.C., she was the daughter of Preston Ellis Tapscott and Betsy Ann Lea Tapscott.
Survivors include two neices, Sarah Thomas of Danville, and Bettie T. Spencer of New Mexico and three nephews, Willie and Frank Tapscott, both of California and Marion Tapscott of Richmond.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Sunday at the Shiloh Baptist Church with the Rev. Cecil Bridgeforth officiating. Interment
will follow at the Oak Hill cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Josephine G. Brande
DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Josephine Grant Brande, 81, formerly of 221 Lansbury Drive, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001.
Born Oct. 8, 1919, she was a daughter of Bernard Chesley Grant and Mary Susan Haynes Grant, who predeceased her.
She was married
to Romie Ashby Brande in July 1940. She was a member of the Tabernacle. She lived most of her life in Danville where she retired from Dan River Mills, Inc.
Survivors include, in additon to her husband, four sons, Mark Brande, of Greensboro, N.C., Shelby Wayne Brande of Danville, Douglas Jerome Brande of Ruffin, N.C. and Jimmy Vance Powell of Pelham, N.C.; three brothers, Edward Dillard Grant of Danville, Aubrey Franklin Grant of Ringgold, Va., and Reginald Wayne Grant of Providence, N.C.; four sisters, Margaret G. Burnette and Louise G. Moore, both of Danville, Nannie G. Young of Pelham, N.C., and Jeraldine G. Moore of Pelham, N.C.; five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by one brother, B.C. Grant Jr.
A private graveside service will be held Tuesday with the Rev. Cleo Hundley officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel.

Gurfes Edmunds
DANVILLE, Va. - Gurfes Lee Edmunds, 65, of 652 Lee St. died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001 at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
He was a son of Henry C. Edmunds and Florine Vaden Edmunds.
He was married
to Betty F. Edmunds. He worked for the United States Government.
Survivors in addition to his wife include one son, Robert C. Edmunds of Woodbridge, Va.; One brother, Hamilton Edmunds of Suitland, Md.; three sisters, Gladys Alexandria of Woodbridge, Va., Catherine Daniels and Mary Tucker, both of Halifax, Va. and one granddaughter.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Rachael Moore and Hanna Averett.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home with the Rev. Floyd Stanfield officiating. Interment
will be at Highland Burial Park.

Peggy Gunnell
DANVILLE, Va. - Peggy Ann Carr Gunnell, 72, of 116 Banner Street, died Sunday, January 28, 2001 in her home after two months of declining health.
Born December 14, 1928, in Roanoke, Va., she was the daughter of Arney B. Carr and Minnie G. Carr
She was married
to Carroll Edward Gunnell on November 30, 1947. She was of the protestant faith. She lived most of her life in Danville Va. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include three sons, Steven H. Gunnell, Carroll Edward “Eddie” Gunnell, Jr., and Roger B. Gunnell, all of Danville; one sister Betty C. Kirby of Richmond, Va.; one brother, Harry B. Carr, of Richmond, Va.; 4 grandchildren, Delia Bryan, Gregory Gunnell, Brandon A. Powell, all of Danville, and Leslie Cox, of Greensboro, N.C.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Margaret and Virginia.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Paul Johnson officiating.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. at the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times at the residence of a son, Eddie Gunnell, Jr., 1049 Vicar Road, Danville Va.

Lewis Johnson
OXFORD HILL, Md. - Lewis Johnson, 61, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001.
Born September 19, 1939, he was a native of Caswell County and attended Caswell County public schools. In 1962 he moved to Oxford Hills.
He was married
to Norma Johnson.
Survivors in addition to his wife include two children, Sharon Brown and Kelvin Johnson; two grandchildren; two brothers and three sisters.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Mill Hill Baptist Church, Roxboro, N.C., with the Rev. Coleman officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery. There will be a viewing 1-2 p.m. prior to the funeral service.

Frances Price
DANVILLE, Va. - Frances Hubbard Price, 75, of 123 Shannon Drive, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001.
Born May, 21, 1925, in the Callands Community of Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Raleigh Jefferson Hubbard and Virginia Woodall Hubbard
She was married
to Clifford L. Price Dec. 21, 1946. She lived all of her life in Danville and had worked in the Personnel Department at Dan River Inc. for 25 years. She later worked as office manager in the Danville office of United States Congressman W.C. “Dan” Daniel for 22 years and for Congressman L.F. Payne for one year. She was an active member of the Saint Luke’s United Methodist Church, the Pilot Club, and Kaufman-Brydon Chapter 87 Order of the Eastern Star. She was secretary of the Board of Directors for Roman Eagle Memorial Home and was a member of the Auxillary Board of the Salvation Army.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a brother, R.J. Hubbard Jr. of Danville.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Saint Luke’s United Methodist Church with the Rev. Randy Duncan officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at Saint Luke’s United Methodist Church 7-8 p.m. Monday and at other times at the residence.

Willie Pruitt
DANVILLE, Va. - Willie Guthrie Pruitt, 103, died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at the Roman Eagle Nursing Home.
Born on Febuary 24, 1897, in Danville, Va., a daughter of William Thomas Guthrie and Lula Phelps Guthrie.
She was married
to Fred D. Pruitt, who predeceased her April 27, 1958. She was a graduate of Harrisonburg State Teachers College and was a teacher for the Danville Public Schools for a number of years until her retirement.
She was a member of the Mount Vernon United Methodist Church.
Survivors include three cousins, Josie M. Lewis of Danville; Elwood Phelps of Yanceyville, N.C., and Jasper P. Lewis of Augusta, Ga.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday. at the Winn Memorial Chapel at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jonathan Bennett officiating.

Roskey James
DANVILLE, Va. - Roskey Hampton James, 64, of 301 Garfield Street, Apt. 4, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at the Avante Nursing Home in Roanoke, Va.
Born May 4, 1936, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of John Leslie James and Estelle Jennings James, who predeceased him.
He was married
to Queen James, who survives.
Survivors include eight sisters, Mae Deering, Nannie James, Rita Spell, Myrtle James and Eunice Poole, all of Danville, Older Carter of Chatham, Norma Cobbs of Sutherlin, Va., and Vertel Day of Washington, D.C.; three brothers, John James Jr., of Pelham, N.C., Odell James of Eden, N.C., and Kenneth James of Danville.
A graveside ceremony will be held 11 a.m. Monday at the Highland Burial Park cemetery.
