Evelyn Miller
DANVILLE, Va. - Evelyn Ellison Miller, 64, of 145 Confederate Ave., died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at the residence.
Born March 19, 1936 in Anderson, S.C., she was the daughter of William Jones Ellison and Novice Pettigrew Ellison who survives.
She was a graduate of Furman University and received a Master of Education degree from Duke University.
She was married
August 6, 1960 to Kenneth M. Miller, who survives.
She had been a resident of Danville since 1958, taught in the Danville Public School for 15 years, and was on the faculty at Averett College until she retired in 1995.
She served as Chair of the Education Department and Director of Student Teaching at Averett.
She was an active member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Aldersgate Choir along with other positions of responsibility including past chairman of the Church Council on Ministries.
She was active in several community organizations including the Wednesday Club and the start up program of Volunteers for the Danville Science Center.
Survivors include in addition to her husband and mother, a brother, R. Curtis Ellison of Framingham, Mass.
The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Johathan Bennett officiating. Private burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Townes Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

‘Smokie’ Peek
RINGGOLD, Va. - Maynard Wayne "Smokie" Peek, 58, of 2948 Rocksprings Rd., died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at the residence.
Born March 8, 1942, he was the son of Roy Frank Peek and Virgie Griffen Peek.
He was married
to Violet May Peek, who survives. He lived his entire life in the Ringgold community and worked for V&J Construction. He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his wife, survivors include three daughters, Monica P. Worley of Blairs, Misty P. Parrish of Ringgold, and Melanie P. Little of Jackson, N.C.; three step-children, Kristy Boyd of Dry Fork, William Norman Korth of Greensboro, N.C., and Daniel Wayne Clark of California; one sister, Hazel P. Tate of Ringgold; three grandsons and two step-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Frank R. Peek and Thomas V. Peek.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. J. Brian Edwards officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and other times at the residences of Kristy Boyd, 715 F.C. Beverly Road, Dry Fork, and Misty P. Parrish, 1225 Fall Creek Road, Ringgold.

Lena Fann Shelton
DANVILLE, Va. - Lena Fann Shelton, age 85, of Halifax Road, died Sunday afternoon Jan. 28, 2001 suddenly at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Shelton was born in Pittsylvania County on December 10, 1915, a daughter of the late Ruben Walter Fann and Molly Parsons Fann.
She was predeceased by her husband, Jasper Howard Shelton.
Mrs. Shelton had spent most of her life in the Glenwood and Mountain Hill communities where she was a member of Mt. Hill Holiness Church and attended Glenwood Memorial Baptist Church. She worked for Dan River Inc. for 44 years before retiring in 1977.
Survivors include one son: Jerry Howard Shelton of Blairs and one sister: Lula Fann Terry of Danville, and one Granddaughter: Pamela Sue Shelton Ford of Blairs, and one Grandson: Christopher Scott Farmer of Danville, and two Great Granddaughters: Karibee Amber Walton and Mikayla Paige Walton both of Blairs.
She was predeceased by a grandson, Jerry Howard "Little Jerry" Shelton Jr., and also predeceased by a sister, Ola Fann Matherly.
Jerry's girlfriend, Ann Farmer, caregiver and special friend of Mrs. Shelton, also survives of Danville.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday at Highland Burial Park by James Snead and Rev. Rick Lancaster. The family will receive friends at Swicegood Funeral Home on Tuesday evening from 7:00 - 8:30 P.M., and other times at the residence of her son, Jerry Shelton at 2477 Hunters Lane, Blairs.
Maggie Soyars
BROSVILLE, Va. - Maggie Owen Soyars, 90, of 365 West Withers Road, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at the residence after a decline in health since September.
Born January 10, 1911, in the Brosville community of Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Thomas Madison "Matt" Owen and Nora Shumate Owen.
She was married
July 10, 1931 to Edd Withers Soyars, who predeceased her. She had lived in the Brosville community all her life and was a homemaker. She was a member of Vandola Baptist Church and was active in Sunday School and the W.M.U. until her illness.
Survivors include one daughter, June Tempest Soyars of the residence; and one sister, Zella Owen Inman of Brosville.
She was predeceased by seven brothers and three sisters.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Rick Lancaster officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, and at other times at the residence.

John M. Terpay
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - John M. Terpay, 77, formerly of Danville, died Jan. 8, 2001, in Sentara Leigh Hospital.
Born in Palmerton, Pa., he was the son of Peter and Sophie Terpay.
He was married
to Dorothy Yakir Terpay, who predeceased him. He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include two daughters, Susan Terpay of Virginia Beach, and Jennifer Feichtel of Mesa, Ariz.; a son, John M. Terpay of Mechanicsville; two brothers, Mike Terpay of Allentown, Pa., and Andrew Terpay of Cleveland, Ohio; a sister, Ann Senko of Palmerton, Pa. and four grandchildren.
David Waller
DANVILLE, Va. - David Waller, 89, of 364 Macy Herndon Lane, Dry Fork, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001 at the Piney Forest Nursing Center in Danville.
Born March 11, 1911 in Pittsylvania County, he ws the son of Bob and Lutama Adams Waller.
He was married
to Hattie Carter Waller, who survives.
Survivors include in addition to his wife, one son, Royal Waller of Danville; three sisters, Annie Kate Davis of Dry Fork, Ida Inge and Beulah Robertson, both of New Jersey.
Funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at the Guildfield Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Harold Vann, II officiating. Interment
will follow in the Waller Family cemetery.
The family will receive friends at residence, 364 Macy Herndon Lane, Dry Fork.

Mary Brown
MT. PLEASENT, S.C. - Mary Sifford Brown died Tuesday morning January 30, 2001 at the East Cooper Regional Medical Center in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina.
Born July 4, 1902 in Salisbury, North Carolina, Mary was the eldest daughter of Fannie Davis and Wiley Lee Sifford. She received her education in Salisbury and came to Danville in 1923 when she married
Luther C. Brown. She worked with her husband and his brother, Marcus, in their business, the Brown Jewelry Company.
She was one of the early members of the new Lutheran church in Danville and throughout her lifetime was active in the life of Ascension Lutheran Church. She is the last charter member of the Kaufman-Bryan Chapter of the Eastern Star; also she was a charter member of the Town and Country Garden Club of Westover Hills. Since 1995 she has resided at the Franke Home in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina.
She was a gracious hostess, a kind friend in her neighborhood and a gentle mother to her two daughters who survive her, Mary Frances and her husband, Carl Ritchie, of Summerville, SC, and Catherine Sue and her husband, Robert Pickett of Charlottesville, VA. She delighted in her six grandchildren, Mary Ritchie of Winston-Salem, NC., Luther Ritchie of Raleigh, NC., Debbie Fox of Memphis, Tenn., Martha Mountain of Summerville, SC., Abigail Ricks of Danville and Peter Pickett of Lexington, KY. She also has six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband who died in 1972, she was predeceased by five brothers, James, Luke, Ralph, Frank, and Clifton Sifford. She is survived by one sister, Ruth Carpenter of Columbia, SC., and one brother Ray Sifford of Charlotte, NC.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Saturday at Ascension Lutheran Church by Pastor Caldwell N. Day. Interment

Josie Epps
HALIFAX, Va. - Josie Landrum Epps, 83, of 1043 Dixon Lane, Halifax, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, at the Woodview.
Born May 15, 1917, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Linwood Landrum and Mattie Webb Landrum.
She was married
to Robert Booker Epps and was a member of the Winns Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include five daughters, Dorothy E. Kinder of Cedar Bluff, Charlotte E. Lloyd of Scottsburg, Connie Gayle E. Womack of Halifax, Jackie E. Ingram of South Boston, and Linda E. Hart of Java; one son, Robert Dunn Epps of South Boston; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Winns Creek Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Dane Skelton officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Powell Funeral Home and other times at the home of Charlotte Lloyd, 1130 Wagstaff Lane, Scottsburg.

Elaine Furr
DANVILLE, Va. - Elaine Hutchens Furr, 70, of 130 Mary Miles Drive, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center after two months of declining health.
Born June 30, 1930, in Rockingham County, N.C., she was the daughter of Posey Hutchens and Nellie Stowe Hutchens.
She was married
to Rodney F. Furr, who predeceased her. She had spent most of her life in Danville and retired from Dan River Mills Inc.
She was a member of Riverview Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Steven Paige Furr and Michael Scott Furr, both of Danville; two brothers, James Hutchens and Dillard Hutchens, both of Danville; three sisters, Ruby Scearce of Danville, Katie Tate of Reidsville, N.C., and Joann Jackson of Wake Forest, N.C., and two grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a brother, Ernest Hutchens and two sisters, Evelyn Brandon and Mary Shelton.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel, with the Elder O.J. Ray and Rev. Don Harrell officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
