Robert Moore
DANVILLE, Va. - Robert Daniel “Dan” Moore Sr., 76, of 231 Starmont Blvd., died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001 at the Stratford Health Care Center after a nine month decline in health.
Born May 4, 1924, he was the son of John Lindsey Moore and Annie Crawford Moore.
He was married
to Frances Jeanette Broach who survives him. He spent most of his life in Danville where he was employed by United States Gypsum as a supervisor. He was a member of the PLeasent View Baptist Church and a veteran of World War II having served in the United States Army.
Survivors in addition to his wife of the residence include two sons, Randy M. Moore, of Boston, Mass., Samuel T. Moore of Danville; two sisters, Elizebeth Bailey, of Reidsville, Bessie Vicks of Danville; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one son, Robert D. Moore Jr.; four predeceased brothers, Thomas R. “Buddy” Moore, Leonard Moore, Howard Moore, Sam Moore and one sister, Helen Kodejs.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Swicegood Chapel by the Rev. Gilmore Hundley officiating. Interment
will follow at the Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home and at other times at the residence, 231 Starmont Blvd.
Mary Motley
CHESAPEAKE, Va. - Mary Mumpower Motley, 67, formerly of Chesapeake, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at her residence in Matthews County.
Born in Hillsboro, N.C., she was the daughter of Roby G. and Millie Isley Mumpower.
She was married
to Sammy Lee Motley Sr. who predeceased her. She was a member of the Atlantic Shores Baptist Church and was active in Republican politics. She was a member of Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the Virginia Human Life Society.
Survivors include one daughter, Mary Leigh Walton of Susan, Va.; four sons, Sammy Lee Motley Jr. and David Raye Motley, both of Gloucester County, Va., Stephen Dale Motley of Matthews County, Va., Larry Wayne Motley of Chesapeake, Va., and nine grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at Atlantic Shores Baptist Church, 1861 Kempsville Road, Va. Beach, Va., with the Rev. Paul Hardy and Rev. Ed Inabinet will officiating. Interment
will follow in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Oman Funeral Home and at other times at 577 Akron Avenue, Chesapeake.

Akers Newman
DANVILLE, Va. - Akers Newman, 71, of 860 Horseshoe Road, died Sunday Feb. 4, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center after 10 years of declining health.
Born August 29, 1929, in Stuart, Va. he was the son of Noel Newman and Sallie Hyler Newman, both who predeceased him.
He lived his life in the Danville area and was a retired employee with Hyler Brothers as a bulldozer operator. He was of the baptist faith.
Survivors include four sisters, Ann Doss, Swanee Moore and Tootsie Newman all of Danville, and Hyler Tramel of Blackstone, Va.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Amos Newman and Landon Newman.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Robert Hardy and Rick Lancaster officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 860 Horseshoe Road, Danville.

Myrtle Mae Shields
BLAIRS, Va. - Myrtle Mae Shields, 93, formerly of the Spring Garden Community, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001 at the Roman Eagle Memorial Home after a period of declining health.
Born July 14, 1907, in Pittsylvania, County, she was the daughter of James Thomas Neal and Berta Finch Neal.
She was married
to Harry Adams Shields Sr. who predeceased her Nov. 17, 1987. She lived her life in Pittsylvania County in the Spring Garden Community where she was a member of the Spring Garden Presbyterian Church. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include one son, Harry A. Shields Jr. of Newbury Bershire, England; one daughter Mary Lee Barham of Reidsville, N.C.; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. A Kyle Flora and the Rev. Steve Lewis officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Geza Bartha
CHATHAM, Va. - Geza Bartha, 80, of 561 Museville Road, died Tuesday Feb. 6, 2001, at his home.
Born Dec. 11, 1920, in Central, Hungary, he was the son of Sandor Bartha and Maria Halmai Bartha.
He was married
to Maria Viniczay Bartha and was a member of Museville Christian Church. He served in the Hungarian Air Force and took part in the 1956 Hungarian Revoluton. He came to the United States in 1959 and moved to Virginia in 1961.
Survivors include one daughter, Iren Halasz of Hungary; three sons, Laszlo Bartha of Hungary, Robert Bartha of Milford, Conn., Denes Bartha of Richfield, Conn.; one sister, Mergaret Bartha of Hungary and five grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Museville Christian Church with Minister Randle Johnson and Minister Steve Hays officiating. Interment
will follow at Museville Christian Church cemetery.

Allen Coward
CALLANDS, Va. - Allen Reynolds Coward, 64, of 14864 Callands Road, died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, at his residence.
Born Oct. 28, 1936, in Pittsylvania County, Va., he was the son of Charlie James Coward and Macie Allen Coward who survives.
He was of the baptist faith.

Nannie Edwards
DANVILLE, Va. - Nannie Graves Edwards, 75, of 115 Northern Drive, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 24, 1925, in Danville, she was the daughter of the late Howard Mckinly and Sallie Beck Graves.
She was married
to Charlie Edwards Sr. and graduated from John M. Langston High School. She was employed by the City of Danville and later she retired from Dan River Mills after many years of service. She was an active member of Camp Grove Baptist Church and President of the Camp Grove Neighborhood Association since its inception.
Survivors include one daughter, Malinda E. Nickens of Herndon, Va.; one son, Charlie Edwards Jr. of Chapel Hill, N.C.; four grandchildren and one sister, Sallie G. Glaise of Danville.
She was predeceased by one son, Michael Edwards; three sisters, Mary Pumprey and Doris Walls of New York and Anna Ferguson of Danville.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Camp Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. W.J. Toomer and Rev. Arthur Crews officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Jean Green
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Jean Yates Green, 69, of 121 Edmunds St., died Feb. 5, 2001 at her home.
Born Nov. 9, 1931, she was the daughter of Mr. Aubrey Roosevelt Yates and Fannie Francis Yates.
She was married
to Beverly Russell Green and was a member of the Southside Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Charles Warren; one daughter Beverly Thomason; one brother, Micheal L. Yates; one sister, Doris Y. Wilborn, three grandchildren and one great-grandchild, all of South Boston.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Don Bryant and Rev. Doug Martin officiating. Interment
will take place in Halifax Memorial Gardens.

DANVILLE, Va. - Doris Virginia Gosney Hudgins, 87, of 310 Girard St., died Feb. 5, 2001, at the Wesleey Care Center in Charlotte, N.C.
Born April 3, 1913, she was the daughter of James Dameron Gosney and Cora Mae Durham Gosney.
She was married
to Jesse Beckham Hudgins who died on Jan. 10, 1973. She lived most of her life in Danville where she was a homemaker. She was a member of the Tabernacle for over 50 years where she was a former nursery worker and was active with the Senior Group of the church.
Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn H. Bailey of Charlotte, N.C., Judith H. Atkins, of Hampton, Va.; one son Jesse Ronald Hudgins of Spencer, N.C.; one sister of Louise G. Farmer; ten grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at The Tabernacle with the Rev. Lamarr Monneyham and Rev. Dr. R.J. Barber Jr. Interment
will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

DANVILLE, Va. - Rebecca Denny Hundley, 99, of 788 Loomfixer Lake Road, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at the residence.
Born, Nov. 9, 1901 in Pilot Mountain, N.C., she was the daughter of David Jones Denny and Delilah Canter Denny.
She was married
to Thomas L. Hundley, who predeceased her June 26, 1977. She lived most of her life in the Anderson Height area of Axton, Va., and was a member and past treasurer of Anderson Chapel United Methodist Church. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include one daughter, Lila Hundley Moore, of the residence; two sisters, Ruby Badgett of Mt. Airy, N.C., Iris Milliron of Sanford, N.C.; one brother, Connie Denny of Pinnacle, N.C.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Anderson Chapel United Methodist Church in Pittsylvania County, Va., with the Rev. Mark Whimmer officiating. Interment

ALTON, Va. - Susie Carter Medley, 60, of 3151 Henderson Road, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001.
Born April 18, 1940 in Halifax County, Va., she was the daughter of Mr. Isaac Carter and Sadie Hamlett Carter.
She was married
to Jerry Medley and was a member of the Chestnut Grove Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband she is survived by one daughter, Debra Martin of Danville, Va.; one step daughter, Shelia Brinkley of Richmond, Va.; four stepsons, Robert Boyd of New York, Ivory Medley of Norfolk, Va., Preston Medley of Alton, Va., Jerry Wayne Medley of Halifax, Va.; one sister, Leola Jean Davis of Rochester, N.Y.; two brothers, Melvin Carter of Dinwiddie, Va., Jerry Wayne Carter of Alton, Va.; twelve grandchildren and one son-in-law.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at the Chestnut Grove Baptist Church in Semora, N.C., with the Rev. Harold Wenstley officiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.
