Roy Byrd Sr.
GRETNA, Va. - Roy Parrish Byrd Sr. age 85 of 117 Oak Grove Drive Gretna, Virginia formerly of Chatham, died Tuesday February 6, 2001 at the Danville Regional Medical Center. Mr. Byrd was born May 7, 1915 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. He was the son of the late William Taw Byrd and Nannie Craft McDowell Byrd. He was married
to the late Hassel Blair Byrd. He is survived by one son, Roy Parrish Byrd, Jr. and his wife Lois of Chatham, two daughters, Nan B. Scruggs and her husband W.C. of Gretna, and Phyllis B. Knight and her husband David of Vienna; two granddaughters, Mary Ann Byrd, and Shelley Victoria Scruggs; three grandsons, Brandon Wade Scruggs, Aaron Parrish Byrd and Alan Edward Knight. He was predeceased by two brothers, Newby Byrd and Howard Byrd; two sisters, Sue Boswell and Mary George; one half sister, Annie McDowell Hodges; and a half brother, Alvin McDowell.
He was a Ford Car salesman affectionately known as "Neighbor" because of his friendliness towards all in selling cars for over 35 years. He was a World War II Navy veteran
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday February 10, 2001 at 11:00 A.M. from the Scott Funeral Home Chapel by Mr. Curtis English. Interment
will be in the Highland Burial Park in Danville. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 Friday February 9, 2001 at Scott Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence of his daughter Nan B. Scruggs, 117 Oak Grove Drive, Gretna VA. Scott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Peggy Collins
DANVILLE, Va. - Peggy Moore Collins age 68 of 224 Courtland St. Danville, Virginia died Wednesday February 7, 2001 at her residence following a lengthy illness. Mrs. Collins was born September 16, 1932 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Mrs. Collins lived most of her life in Pittsylvania County and for the past ten years has resided in Danville. She was the daughter of the late Walter Henry Moore and Minnie Whitlow Moore. She is survived by her husband Haywood Bennett Collins of the residence. She is also survived by one daughter Shelia C. Garrison of Danville; five sisters, Katherine M. Adkins of Danville, Margaret Payne of Chatham, Janie Baer of Bowie, MD, Nancy Hunley and Myrtle Brumfield of Gretna; four brothers, Randy Moore of Altavista and Billy Moore of Gretna, Douglas Moore of Danville, Wayne Moore of Chatham. She is also survived by a very special and dear friend, Gladys Bowen of Blairs. She was predeceased by two brothers, David Moore and Walter "Putts" Moore: she was also predeceased by one sister, Dorothy Saunders.
She was a member of Payneton United Methodist Church and Timberlake Baptist Ladies Sunday School Class, she also attended Blairs Baptist Church. She was employed for ten years at Bassett Walker of Chatham prior to her retirement.
A graveside service will be conducted Saturday February 10, 2001 at 2:00 P.M. from the Hillcrest Burial Park, Chatham, VA by Rev. Jonathan Reed. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at the Blairs Baptist Church at 3:00 P.M. The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 8:30 P.M. February 9, 2001 at Scott Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence of her daughter Shelia Garrison, 128 Clarkson Street, Danville. Olleen Durham
DANVILLE, Va. - Olleen Anderson Durham, age 72, of 8 Holcomb Ave., died at her residence Tuesday afternoon Feb. 6, 2001 after a one year decline in health. Mrs. Durham was born in Danville on November 3, 1928, a daughter of the late George E. Anderson and Mamie Warren Anderson.
She was married
to Raymond E. Durham who died in 1965.
Mrs. Durham was a graduate of Cobb Memorial High School in Ruffin, N. C., and had spent most of her life in Pelham, N. C., and Danville. She worked as a quality auditor for Dan River Inc. and was a member of Forest Lawn Baptist Church where she had sung in the choir since 1956.
Survivors include two daughters: Patsy Durham Cox of Danville, and Judy Durham Wells of Crystal River, Fla., and three grandchildren: Travis Wells of the U.S. Army stationed at Fort Drum, N. Y., and Frank L. Cox, III, and Christie D. Cox both of Danville, and one great grandchild: Tyson Wells of New York, and three sisters: Mary Watlington and Maxine McDowell both of Danville, and Doris Evans of Ninety Six, S. C., and two brothers, George E. Anderson Jr. of Danville, and James Randall Anderson of Colonial Heights.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Larry Durham and Rev. Tim Nuckles. Interment
will follow at Mountain View cemetery. The family will receive friends at the the funeral home on Thursday from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m., and at the residence at other times.
Walter Glass
HURT, Va. - Walter Glass, 87, of 501 Delta Drive, Hurt, died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at his residence.
Born Jan. 11, 1915 in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Adam Glass and Blanche Simpson Glass.
He was married
to Cora B. Glass, who survives. He was an employee of Northern Southern Railroad until his retirement. He was a member of the Mount Moriah Baptist Church and served on the Board of Deacons, was Treasurer of the Sunday School department, and was a member of the choir.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Silas J. Glass and Paul L. Glass, both of Hurt; three daughters, Geneva G. Davis of Hurt, Coretha G. Reynolds and Virgie G. Reynolds, both of Gretna; two sisters, Lucy Dennis and Gracie Coles, both of Hurt; 28 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by a daughter, Elsie Reynolds and a son, Carl Bennett.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at the Miller Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Timothy Walker officiating. Interment
will follow at the Mount Moriah Baptist Church cemetery.

Charles Hubbard
HURT, Va. - Charles David Hubbard, 44, of 15476 Rockford School Road, Hurt, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001 at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born March 20, 1956, he was the son of Edgar Hubbard and Lorene Thomas Hubbard.
He was married
to Jewel Hubbard, who survives. He was an army veteran and was last employed as a truck driver. He was a member of Sandy Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include, in addition to his wife, one daughter, Tammie Hubbard of Hurt; four sons, Cameron Hubbard, Sammie Hubbard and Charles Michael Hubbard, all of Hurt, and Chris Hubbard of Richmond; two brothers, Russell Hubbard of Sandy Level and Donnie Hubbard of Hurt and one sister, Audrey Gray of Sandy Level.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by two brothers, Edgar Hubbard and John Wayne Hubbard.
The memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Sandy Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Raymond Ramsey officiating.

Cleo Lahanas
DANVILLE, Va. - Cleo Marcus Lahanas, 87, of 403 Wilson Street, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born August 19, 1913, in St. John, New Brunswick, Canada, she was the daughter of Michael M. Marcus and Stamatia Nicholas Marcus.
She was employed at the V.C. Restaurant.
Survivors include one son, Spearos A. Lahanas of Danville; one daughter, Mary L. Roundalas of St. John, New Brunswick, Canada, and one sister Mary Vardavas Dorsett of Danville.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001 in St. John, New Brunswick, Canada.

William Martin
GRETNA, Va. - William Martin, 70, of 696 Starkey Road, Gretna, died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 2, 1930, he was the son of Jerry Martin and Josephine Davis Martin.
He was a retired farmer and a member of Staunton Baptist Church in Long Island.
Survivors include three brothers, Jimmy Lee Martin of Gretna, Leroy Martin of Altavista, and Ellis Martin of Long Island and two sisters, Youmie Stone of Long Island and Carrie Davis of Gretna.
The funeral will be held 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Staunton Baptist Church with Dr. P.A. Medley officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.

Carlton Merricks Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Carlton Austin Merricks Sr., 75, of 460 Iris Lane, died Feb. 6, 2001, at the Piney Forest Health Care Center after six months of declining health.
Born March 10, 1925, in the Callands Community of Pittsylvania County. He was the son of Claude Washington Merricks and Sallie Ann Austin Merricks.
He was married
to Florence Mae Scearce Merricks who survives him. He lived all his life in Pittsylvania County. He was retired from Dan River Inc. where he worked in the maintenance department after 37 years of service. He was a member of Mount Hermon Baptist Church. He served with the Untied States Army during World War II.
Survivors in addition to his wife include, two sons, Carlton Austin Merricks Jr., Ralph Daniel Merricks, both of Danville; one brother, Billy Merricks of Callands, Va.; two sisters, Mamie M. Adkins, Vergie M. Wertz both of Danville; three grandchildren; one great-grandchildren; one step grandchild and two step great-great grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday, at the Wrenn Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Don Davidson and Robert Vermillion officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Nancy Nuckols
CHATHAM, Va. - Nancy Moore Nuckols, 81, of 1601 Double Bridge Road, Chatham, died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001 at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 31, 1919 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Charles Anderson Moore, Sr. and Lillian Moon Moore.
She was married
to William Bryan Nuckols Sr. who predeceased her. She graduated from Longwood State Teachers College and taught at Chatham High School. She was a member of Hollywood Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School.
Survivors include two daughters, Jane N. Whitehead of Hawaii, and Mary Grace N. Paden of Richmond; four sons, William B. Nuckols Jr., Robert E. Nuckols, and Richard H. Nuckols, all of Chatham, and Ralph M. Nuckols of Greensboro, N.C.; two brothers, Charles A. Moore, Jr. of Chatham, and Henry R. Moore of Atlanta, Ga.; two sisters, Polly M. Light of Virginia Beach, and Betsy N. Easley of Chatham; eleven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 3 p.m. Saturday at Hollywood Baptist Church with the Rev. J. Haywood Alcorn and the Rev. Kyle A. Flora officiating. Interment
will follow at the Hollywood Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Hollywood Baptist Church and at other times at the residence.

Edna Bennett
DANVILLE, Va. - Edna Warren Bennett, 92, of 117 Hampton Drive, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001 at the Stratford Health Care Center.
Born April 22, 1908 in Danville, she was a daughter of Major Robert Warren and Clara Belle Warren.
She was married
to Byrd Jennings Bennett who predeceased her Dec. 15, 1972.
She lived all her life in Danville and graduated from Stratford College.
She worked as a librarian at the Danville Public Library until her retirement.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Wednesday Club.
Survivors include a daughter, Jean B. Clark of Richmond; a son, Richard Warren Bennett of Newport News; two brothers, Charles F. Warren of Chapel Hill, N.C., William Wallace Warren of Winter Park, Fla.; two sisters, Dorothy W. Kerwick of Charlottesville, Bobbie W. Wells of Rockville, Md., and four grandchildren
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Townes Funeral Home with the Rev. Joey Faucette officiating.

Lewis Ireson
DANVILLE, Va. - Lewis Edward “Luke” Ireson, age 85, of 110 Park Avenue, died Friday morning February 9, 2001 at Riverside Health Care Center after a five year decline in health and a five day stay at the nursing home.
Mr. Ireson was born in Martinsville on December 17, 1915, a son of the late Mack Ireson and Flora Cox Ireson.
He was married
to Louise Moseley Ireson who died on January 29, 1987.
Mr Ireson was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in France during World War II.
He was a self employed landscaper and had also worked for John Daniel Construction Company for a number of years, and was of the Baptist faith. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post #647 and the American Legion Post #1097.
Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Ireson Green of Blairs, and a cherished friend, Betty Morris of Danville, and one brother, Harry “Shine” Ireson of Danville, and one sister, Eunice Siegel of Rockport, Texas, and two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Duane Blevins. Interment
will follow at Mountain View cemetery where military honors will be performed by the American Legion Dan River Post #1097 Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at the residence.
