"HALIFAX, Va. - A 49-year-old Halifax man who died Thursday morning in a fall at the foundry where he was employed was described Friday by family members as a man who loved to work.
When Charlie William Byrd was not working at Intermet Corp.'s Archer Creek foundry in Lynchburg, he could be found working in his auto shop on U.S. 501, said nephew Quentin Byrd.
“Everybody cared a lot for him,“ his nephew said. “He was a good person to be around.“
The elder Byrd was an electrician and had worked at the foundry for about 17 years. He also operated an auto repair business located next to his home just outside the Town of Halifax.
Byrd was pronounced dead 5 a.m. Thursday at Lynchburg General Hospital after being transported from the foundry by the Concord Rescue Squad. Rescuers had responded to a phone call from the foundry at 4:20 a.m.
Bryd's wife, Diane, said Friday that she had been told by her husband's supervisor that he was working on a scaffold about 11 feet above the floor when he fell. “He said Charlie lost his balance and he stumbled and went to falling,“ Diane Byrd said. “He (the supervisor) tried to catch him but could not reach him.“
Byrd said her husband apparently struck his head when he fell, breaking his neck.
Family and friends gathered at the Byrd residence Friday where one wreath stood at the front door of the home and another one at the door of the garage where Byrd spent many hours repairing cars.
“He had his auto mechanic business up here on 501 for about five years,“ his wife said. “He enjoyed working on cars.“
Byrd's sister, Irene Oliver, of Danville said her brother was a hard-working, family man.
Ironically, Oliver said the family's concern for Byrd was that he traveled every work day to his job in Lynchburg and they feared he might have an accident on the road.
“We always said he worked so hard,“ Oliver said. “We told him he should stop and retire.“
Intermet is a manufacturer of precision iron and aluminum castings for automotive and industrial equipment providers worldwide. The company is headquartered in Troy, Mich.
A funeral for Byrd will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at the New Second Buffalo Baptist Church in Nathalie."
