Lynwood Loftis
DANVILLE, Va. - Lynwood Ray Loftis, 69, of 3901 Mount Cross Road, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at Piney Forest Health Care Center after 12 years of declining health.
Born July 23, 1931, in Halifax, he was the son of James L. Loftis and Katherine Bray Loftis.
He was married
to Naomi Ruth Barley Loftis, who survives.
He spent most of his life in Pittsylvania County and lived in the Mount Cross Road community for 30 years. He worked for Dan River Inc. and was a member of the Church of God.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter, Shelia Maxey of Roanoke; one son, Tony Ray Loftis of Montvale; three brothers, James Ralph Loftis and Kenneth Wayne Loftis, both of Sutherlin, and John Henry Loftis of Keeling; one sister, Estelle Mayhew of Sutherlin; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John Meadows officiating. Interment
will follow at Halifax Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. tonight at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

Barbara Marshall
CHATHAM, Va. - Barbara McDaniel Haskins Marshall, 56, of 1528 Greenbay Road, Chatham, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 9, 1945, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Richard T. McDaniel and Helen Bolling McDaniel.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Leonard Haskins, and later married
Richard Lee Marshall, who survives. She was a member of Gretna Church of God of Prophecy and was the former owner of Haskins Grocery.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two daughters, Robin Roark of Gretna, Angie Barker of Hurt; one son, Brian Haskins of Chatham; one sister, Frances Miller of Hurt; one brother, James Richard "Ricky" McDaniel of Chatham and six grandchildren.
In addition to her first husband and parents, she was predeceased by one sister, Clara Reynolds.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Greenbay Christian Church with Rudy Hearn, minister, and the Rev. Cecil Frazier officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.

Melvin Mayhew
GRETNA, Va. - Melvin Anderson Mayhew, age 84, of 1113 Blue Ridge Drive, Gretna died Saturday, February 10, 2001 in Riverside Health Care Center.
Born May 22, 1916 in Pittsylvania County he was a son of the late William Cleman Mayhew and Laura Shelton Mayhew. He was predeceased by his wife Hilma Haynes Mayhew, three brothers, Eugene Mayhew, W.C. Mayhew, Jr. and Roy Mayhew. He was retired from the parts department of Poole Chevrolet. Mr. Mayhew was a member and former deacon of Midway Baptist Church, an Army veteran of World War II and a former member of the American Legion.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Linda Mayhew of Greensboro, NC; two daughters and sons-in-law, Martha and John Mitchell of Glen Allen and Mary and Steve Moss of Gretna; a sister Olene Brown of Hurt; five grandchildren, Mark Moss of Gretna, Cassandra Mayhew and Abigail Mayhew, both of Greensboro, NC, Scott Mitchell of Richmond and Tom Mitchell of Manassas.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 12, 2001 at Midway Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Lynn Marstin. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times at the residence, 1113 Blue Ridge Drive, Gretna.

Billy Powell
DANVILLE, Va. - Billy Ray Powell, 48, of 125 London Drive, died suddenly Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 14, 1952, he was the son of Herbert Lee Powell and Mildred Cox Powell, who survive.
He lived all his life in Danville and worked as a carpenter for B.L. Dickens & Sons Construction Company. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, one daughter, Lindsay Rae Powell of Danville and three sisters, Peggy P. Briggs of Prospect Hill, N.C., Pam K. Powell of Danville, and Rhonda P. Lester of Dry Fork.
He was predeceased by one son, Robert Nicholas Powell.
Funeral arrangements are currently incomplete.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his parents, 125 London Drive in the Edgewood Community.

Robert Saunders
DANVILLE, Va. - Robert D. Saunders, 89, of 160 Mill Creek Road, Chatham, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 24, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of James Saunders and Cordie White Saunders.
He was married
to Katherine Younger Saunders, who survives. He was a member of Greater Triumph Missionary Baptist Church and worked 32 years in the maintenance department for the Town of Chatham.
In addition to his wife survivors include five sons, James Saunders of Adelphi, Md., Willie T. Saunders of Oxon Hill, Md., Ronnie Saunders of Suffolk, Ray C. Saunders of Richmond and Clarence White of Chatham; four daughters, Velma Robertson and Ernestine Pritchett, both of Chatham, Dorothy Wright of Tappahanock and Lue J. Pickens of Fort Washington, Md.; three sisters, Sallie Saunders and Lettie Saunders, both of Washington, D.C., and Bernice Saunders of Blairs; 34 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Monday at Greater Triumph Missionary Baptist Church with Dr. H.G. McGhee officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery. Viewing will be held 2-7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Herman Williamson
YANCEYVILLE, Va. - Herman Lea "JC" Williamson, 67, of 276 Oak Tree Street, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 7, 1933, he was the son of Joe Edd Williamson and Madie Totten Williamson.
He was married
to Nettie Adams Williamson, who predeceased him.
He was of the Baptist faith and attended Blackwell Missionary Baptist Church. He worked as a truck driver until his retirement.
Survivors include four daughters, Esther Mae Williamson of the residence, Cynthia Ann Williamson of Holloywood, Fla., Kay Angela Williamson of Orlando, Fla., and Joy Elaine Willaimson of Yanceyville; three sons, Herman Lee Williamson, James Darnell Williamson and Donald Ed Williamson, Sr., all of Patterson, N.J.; 15 grandchildren; one sister, Katie Williamson Richmond of Yanceyville; one step-sister, Carolyn Poteat of Yanceyville and one step-brother, Robert Garrett of Houston, Texas.
The funeral will be held 7 p.m. Monday at the Fulton Funeral Home Chapel. Viewing will be held 4-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home chapel.

Harold Eaton, Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Harold Allen Eaton, Sr., 68, of 4900 Whitmell School Road, Dry Fork, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center after two years of declining health.
Born Aug. 16, 1932 in Eauclaire, Wis., he was the son of Allen Eaton and Vera Briggs Eaton.
He was married
to Anita Ludwig Eaton, who predeceased him Feb. 13 1999. He had lived in Clark, N.J. before moving to Danville nine years ago. He worked as an engineer with Union Local 825 before his retirement.
Survivors include four sons, Hans Ludwig of the home, Allen Eaton of Pennsylvania, Edward Eaton and Harold Eaton, both of New Jersey; two daughters, Claudia Ludwig-Gryder of Texas, Petra Mutchler of New Jersey; four sisters, Marion Jaenke and Evelyn Koepl, both of Arizona, Ardella Marion of Florida, Bertha Jaenke of Wisconsin and 14 grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Robert Vermillion officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

Lemon Jefferson
DANVILLE, Va. - Lemon Odell Jefferson, 92, of 262 Fagan Street, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center after one year of declining health.
Born Dec. 20, 1908, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Charlie Jefferson and Mary Jefferson.
He was married
to Irene Mann Jefferson who predeceased him on Nov. 19, 1991.
He lived his entire life in Pittsylvania County and Danville and worked as a painter for several paint contractors and himself until his retirement. He was of the Baptist faith. He served with the United States Army during World War II and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 647.
Survivors include one son, Robert Wayne Jefferson of Danville; two brothers, Charlie Jefferson and George Jefferson, both of Danville; three sisters, Coryn J. Smith, Inzy J. Swicegood and Blanche J. Mooneyham, all of Danville; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by two sons, Curtis T. Jefferson and Henry O. Jefferson and one brother, Howard Jefferson.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Monday in Highland Burial Park with the Rev. James Albert and the Rev. John H. Meadows officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Robert Wayne Jefferson, 2843 Blairmont Drive, Danville.

SCOTTSBURG, Va. - John Daniel McKinney, 67, of McDonnald Road, Scottsburg, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001 at the residence.
Born May 15, 1933, he was the son of Walter Daniel McKinney and Ruby Clara McKinney.
He was a member of Scottsburg Baptist Church.
Survivors include two brothers, Wilson Julias McKinney of Scottsburg and Willie D. McKinney of South Boston.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Fork Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Rudolph Jacobs officiating.

Ocris “Buster” Motley
DANVILLE, Va. - Ocris Benjamin “Buster” Motley, Jr., 85, of 702 Arlington Road died Sunday, Feb. 11 at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in the hospital for 2 1/2 weeks.
Born Sept. 2, 1915 in Danville, he was the son of the Ocris B. Motley, Sr. and Eva Lee Osborne Motley.
He was married
Oct. 19, 1940 to Ruth Elizabeth Parsons Motley, who survives.
He was employed by Dan River, Inc. for 35 yrs. before going to P. Lorillard where he was a supervisor until 1982. He was also a timekeeper and State Commissioner for the local professional wrestling matches for several years.
Survivors include, in addition to his wife of the residence, three daughters, Ruth Ann Motley Fuller of Bedford, Va., Vicky Lee Motley of the residence and Diane Marie Motley Clancy of Danville; three granddaughters; one great-granddaughter, and one sister, Barbara Cannon of Danville.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Gary Milstead officiating. Interment
will follow at Mountain View. The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.
