GRETNA, Va. - Stiley Glenwood Moore, 73, of 2445 Old Mine Road, died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001, in Gretna Health Care Center.
Born Dec. 31, 1927, in Pittsylvania County, Va., he was the son of Ike Moore and Vera Gibson Moore.
He was married
to Leone Lynwood Bolling Doss Moore. He was a former employee of the Lane Company and was a retired farmer. He was a member of Piney Fork Baptist Church.
Survivors in addition to his wife include, one step-son Johnny Doss of Amelia; one brother David Moore of Gretna, Va.; three sisters, Edith Tucker of Danville, Va., Ann Roach, Nannie Roach, both of Gretna; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased in death by one sister, Isabelle Lumpkin; six brothers, Edward Moore, Chellie Moore, Raleigh Moore, Richard Moore, Woodnoid Moore, and Clarence Moore.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday, at Colbert-Moran Chapel with the Rev. Joe Glass and Rev. David Turbyfill officiating. Interment
will follow at Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Thursday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home.

Jean Grenier
Homossasa Springs, Fla. - Jean Andy Grenier of Homossasa Springs, FL and formerly of Danville, Va made her transition on February 9th, 2001. Joan was well loved by her family and by her many friends and fellow members of the community. She was a vivacious lady an excellent dancer and an avid golfer. She was an example of optimism with her positive attitude, and she touched many with her generosity and kindness. Her sparkling personality will be missed by all...
Mrs. Grenier was a member of Silverthorn and Sugarmill Woods Country Club and also a member of the Heritage Club in Huntsville AL. She held a political appointment to the Virginia State Emergency Medical Commission appointed by the late Governor John Dalton. Mrs. Grenier was active in the Republican party in Virginia, Alabama and Florida. She also served on several committees, including the inaugural committee for President Richard Nixon. She was the past president of the Greater Springfield Virginia and the Madison Alabama Republican Women's Clubs.
She was married
to Francis Edward Grenier and James Albert Andy who predeceased her. Survivors include a daughter, Audia Andy Erman of New Smyrna Beach, Florida, her two grandchildren Kenneth James and Bridget Nirvana Erman, who were the light of her life and four step grandchildren. She also had three step children, Francis Edward Grenier, Jr. of Colorado Springs, CO, Lawrence Grenier of Manassas, VA, and Diane Grenier Norton of Falls Church, VA. In addition she is survived by two sisters, Margie Woodford Spencer and Leatrice Woodford Partido Smith of Greensboro, NC. A son, Brian Clark Andy and a sister Doris Woodford McHugh. Greensboro, N.C. A son, Brain Clark Andy and a sister Doris Woodford McHugh predeceased her. Joanie was a wonderful woman who will be missed by all.

Gordon Hankins
DANVILLE, Va. - Gordon Allen Hankins, 45, of 641 Monument St., died Monday, Feb. 12, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health.
Born March 31, 1955, in Danville, he was the son of Gordon Stewart Hankins and Doris Hutcherson Hankins who survive.
He was married
to Penny Lee Hanks Hankins who survives, on Sept. 19, 1994. He was a self employed carpenter. He attended Community Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the United States Navy.
Survivors in addition to his wife include, two brothers, Jimmy Hankins, of Danville, Douglas Hankins; three sisters, Juanita Hankins of Danville, Va., Kathy Rickmar of Danville, Lorie Waters; one son, Kirby W. Hankins of Danville, five daughters, Sharon A. Towler, Angel N. Hankins, Jenny L. Hankins, Chrissy M. Hankins, all of Danville, Stacy R. Nunleys, of Kentucky and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Tony Hankins.
A funeral was held, 2 p.m. Thursday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Albert officiating. Interment
followed at Hanks Family cemetery with graveside military honors by American Legion Post 1097 Honor Guard.
The family received friends 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel, and at other times at the residence.
Earl Lavinder
HOLLYWOOD, Fla. - Earl H. Lavinder, 81, of 328 Arlington Place, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at the Memorial Hospital in Hollywood, Fla.
Born Nov. 24, 1919, in Danville, Va., he was the son of the late Edgar H. Lavinder and Roxie Presnell Lavinder.
He was married
to Geraldine Dudley Lavinder who survives. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandpa who had spent most of his life in Danville before moving to Hollywood, Fla. this past October.
He was a member of Schoolfield United Methodist Church, Morotock Lodge No. 210 A.F. & A.M., where he was a 32nd degree mason, and also a member of the Danville Scottish Rites, the Danville Elk's Lodge No. 227, and the American Legion Memorial Post No. 325.
He worked in sales for Rhodes Furniture.
Survivors in addition to his wife of the residence include one son, Scott W. Lavinder, of Sarasota, Fla.; two sisters, Elsie L. Jones and Pauline L. Williams, both of Danville, and two grandsons.
A graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Mountain View cemetery with the Rev. M. Dana Hunt and Rev. Michael Wiles officiating.
The family will receive friends Friday 7-8:30 p.m. at Swicegood Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.

Kenneth Lewis
BRONX, N.Y. - Kenneth Lisberg Lewis, formerly of Danville, Va., died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, after a brief illness.
Born Dec. 16, 1945, he was the son of Ollie and Samuel Lewis.
He was educated in the public schools and was a graduate of John. M. Langston High School.
He was a former member of the Camp Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include, two sisters, Sylvia Thompson, of Bronx, N.Y., Otelia Lewis of Bradenton, Fla., and one brother, Joseph Lewis, of New York.
A funeral will be held Friday, at Ransome Funeral Home in Bronx, N.Y., at 4418 White Plain Road.
Thomas Phillips
VIRGILINA, Va. - Thomas Dewey Phillips, 57, of 2176 Rice School Road, died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, at his home.
Born July 29, 1943, in Halifax County, Va., he was the son of George William Phillips Sr. and Claudia Redd Phillips.
He was married
to Marion Honeycutt Phillips who survives. He was a member of North Fork Baptist Church, and was a farmer.
Survivors in addition to his wife include, one daughter Vicky Cole, of Virgilina, Va.; five sisters, Judy P. Coghill, Eunice Ann P. Morris, both of Virgilina, Linda P. Howerton, of South Boston, Va., Gladys P. Elliot, of South Boston, Va., Mary P. Bowen, of Buffalo Junction, Va.; two brothers, George W. Phillips Jr., of Oxford, N.C., Clarence "Lennie" Phillips, of Roxboro, N.C., and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at North Folk Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill LaWall officiating. Interment
will follow at North Folk Baptist Church cemetery.

Homer Rottler
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Homer Leo Rottler, 63, of 1021 Noblin Ave., died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born April 18, 1937, he was the son of Frank Leo Rottler and Ruth Hallyburton.
He was married
to Carole Duffie Rottler who survives. He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church and worked in construction for Fralin & Waldron.
Survivors in addition to his wife include, one son, Scott Hadley Rottler, of South Boston, Va.; two daughters, Rhonda R. Green of Halifax, Va., Lori R. Cole of South Boston, Va.; and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jack Stewart officiating. Interment
will follow at Oak Ridge cemetery.

Edrie "Pete" Shelton
GRETNA, Va. - Edrie Lee "Pete" Shelton, age 81, of 673 Blue Ridge Drive, Gretna died Thursday, February 15, 2001 at his residence.
Born January 5, 1920 in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late Zebedee Shelton and Maude Taylor Shelton. Mr. Shelton was predeceased by his wife, Ruth Martin Shelton, a son-in-law, Aubrey Yeatts, four brothers, Marvin Shelton, Ollie Shelton, Acie Shelton and Oscar Shelton, two sisters, Eliza Merricks and Myrtle Mayhew. Mr. Shelton was the former co-owner of Swanson-Shelton Farms and Galveston Mills, Inc. He was an active member of Gretna Christian Church where he was a Deacon Emeritus and a former Board Member. An Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of American Legion Post 232, where he served as building manager of the post home for forty-seven years. He was a member and Secretary Emeritus of Anderson Lodge #258 A.F. & A.M. He was named Gretna's Citizen of the Year in 1988 and as outstanding volunteer for God's Storehouse in 1992. He was a former chairman of the Pittsylvania County Democratic Party, a member of the Gretna Lions Club, Brushy Mountain Club and the Scottish Rites.
He is survived by four daughters and three sons-in-law, Joan Yeatts of Gretna, Alice and Barry Gourley of Danville, Susan and Milton Elliot of Gretna and Laurie and Bruce Moran of Gretna; one brother, Luther "Ned" Shelton of Gretna; three sisters, Margaret Rowland of Gretna, Louise Witcher of Gretna and Nora Violet Osborne of Chatham; seven grandchildren, Sarah Yeatts, Brandon Yeatts, Jennifer Gourley, Katie Elliot, Jeffrey Bond, Bryant Moran and Austin Moran; two great-grandchildren, Leathern Yeatts and Mason Yeatts.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 17, 2001 at the Gretna Christian Church by Rev. Charles Ellis and Rev. Roy Parker. Burial with Masonic rites by Anderson Lodge #258 A.F. & A.M. will follow in Gretna Burial Park.

Katherine Walthall
COLUMBIA, S.C. - Katherine Vardas Walthall, 68, died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001.
Born in Richland County, she was the daughter of Nicholas F. Vardas and Lillian Francis Wallace Vardas.
She was married
to Robert Franklin Walthall Sr. who predeceased her and she was a member of Good Shepard Episcopal Church.
Survivors include three sons, Robert F. Walthall Jr., Toni R. Walthall, Michael W. Walthall; two brothers, Thomas N. Vardas of Columbia, Michael A. Vardas of Greensboro and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in St. Mary's Chapel at Episcopal Church of the Good Shepard. Interment
will follow at the church's Memorial Garden.

Pearl Womack
DANVILLE, Va. - Pearl L. Womack, 93, formerly of 600 Main St., died Feb. 14, 2001, at Piney Forest Health Care Center after eight years of declining health.
She lived all of her life in the Vernon Hill Community of Halifax County prior to moving to Danville in Oct. 1963. She was a homemaker and a member of Shelton Memorial Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include one niece, Fannie Foster of Kembridge, Va.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday, at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Paul Johnson officiating. Interment
will follow at Oak Level Presbyterian Church cemetery.
Wrenn-Yeatts is in charge of all arrangements.
Belle Beyer
DANVILLE, Va. - Rosa Belle Beyer, age 77, of Ringgold Church Road, died Friday, February 16, 2001, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born September 22, 1924 in Louisiana, she was the daughter of Benjamin D. Woodruff and Mary Turner Woodruff.
Belle was married
to Vincent Beyer, who survives of the residence.
She was a member of Ringgold Baptist Church. She was a tour escort for Holiday Travel, her friends said she always had her bags packed ready to go on another trip.
Besides her husband, survivors include three sons, Thomas Beyer of Suffold, VA., Gerald Beyer, Sr. and Gary Beyer, both of Danville, one sister, Geneva Faulkner of Louisiana; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A graveside service will be held on Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001 at 2:00 pm from Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Carl E. Burger.
The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home on Saturday night from 7:00-8:00 pm. Other times the family will be at the residence of her son Gerald Beyer, Sr. at 399 Updike Place.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Ringgold Fire Department or Ringgold Baptist Church.
