Billy Horsley
DANVILLE, Va. - Billy Gene Horsley, 70, of 815 Holland Road, died Friday, Feb. 16, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center after three weeks of declining health.
Born July 13, 1930 in Hillsville, he was the son of Pearley T. Horsley and Carrie Cochran Horsley.
He was married
to Shirley Lewis Horsley, who survives, on April 2, 1960. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and lived in the Holland Road community for the past 50 years. He worked for Dan River Inc. for 35 years and was the manager of Little League New York Yankees. He was a member of Holland Road Baptist Church where he sung in the choir, and he was also a member of American Legion Post No. 1097.
Survivors include, in addition to his wife, three sons, Ronald Gene Horsley of Axton, Terry Dale Horsley and Mickey Thomas Horsley, both of Danville; two sisters, Ila Horsley Hardy and Peggy Horsley Echols, both of Danville; four brothers, Curtis E. Horsley of Blairs, Denny Lee Horsley and Glenn Thomas Horsley, both of Danville, Donnie Ray Horsley of Martinsville; five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one step-grandchild.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Holland Road Baptist Church with the Rev. James Mayes and the Rev. Aubrey Dewberry officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens with military honors performed by the American Legion Dan River Post No. 1097 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Earl Lavinder
HOLLYWOOD, Fla. - Earl H. Lavinder, 81, of 328 Arlington Place, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at the Memorial Hospital in Hollywood, Fla.
Born Nov. 24, 1919, in Danville, Va., he was the son of the late Edgar H. Lavinder and Roxie Presnell Lavinder.
He was married
to Geraldine Dudley Lavinder who survives. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandpa who had spent most of his life in Danville before moving to Hollywood, Fla., this past October. He was a member of Schoolfield United Methodist Church, Morotock Lodge No. 210 A.F. & A.M., where he was a 32nd degree mason, and also a member of the Danville Scottish Rites, the Danville Elk's Lodge No. 227, and the American Legion Memorial Post No. 325. He worked in sales for Rhodes Furniture.
Survivors in addition to his wife of the residence include one son, Scott W. Lavinder, of Sarasota, Fla.; two sisters, Elsie L. Jones and Pauline L. Williams, both of Danville, and two grandsons.
A graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Mountain View cemetery with the Rev. M. Dana Hunt and Rev. Michael Wiles officiating.
The family will receive friends Friday 7-8:30 p.m. at Swicegood Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.

Ann Neely
CHATHAM, Va. - Ann St. John Fullerton Neely, 70, of 227 Catalpa Drive, Chatham, died Friday, Feb. 16, 2001 at Duke University Hospital.
Born June 19, 1930, she was the daughter of Thomas Bushnell Fullerton and Eula St. John Fullerton.
She was married
to John David Neely, who survives. She was a member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church and D.A.R. She was also a member of the William Pitt Garden Club and a charter member of the Spotsylvania Volunteer Rescue Squad.
Survivors include, in addition to her husband, one daughter, Carol N. Adams of Altavista; three sons, William F. Neely of Spotsylvania, Thomas F. Neely of Appleton, Maine, John F. Neely of Abingdon; two sisters, Shirley F. Abell of Abingdon, Phebe F. Cress of Fincastle and six grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church with the Rev. John S. Ruef officiating. Interment
will be held 1 p.m. Monday at the Holsten Conference Methodist cemetery in Emory.

Minnie Price
DANVILLE, Va. - Minnie V. Price, 86, of 219 Mabin St., died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 24, 1914, she was the daughter of James Vasser and Minnie Marable Vasser
She was married
to Charlie J. Price Sr. who predeceased her.
She is survived by two daughters, Bobbie J. Sykes and Mary L. Glass, both of Danville; four sons, Frederick Price of Danville, Charlie J. Price Jr. of Washington, D.C., Clifton A. Price of Absecon, N.J., Eugene E. Price of Charlotte, N.C.; thirteen grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren and two sisters, Nannie Juanita White of Danville and Verna Mae Martin of Washington, D.C.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Sunday at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church on Betts Street. Interment
will follow at Oak Hill cemetery.

Joyce Wheatley
DANVILLE, Va. - Joyce Freston Wheatley, 93, of 172 Howeland Circle, died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, at the residence.
Born Aug. 5, 1907 in Milton, N.Y., she was married
to C. Stuart Wheatley, Jr., who predeceased her. She lived most of her adult life in Danville and was a volunteer in the American Red Cross, the Memorial Hospital Ladies Auxilliary, and Danville Mental Health Association.
Survivors include two daughters, Ellen W. Turner of Danville, Josephine W. Overbey of Rustburg; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her husband, by one son, Chase Stuart Wheatley, III.
The graveside service will be held Sunday with the Rev. Jack Heinsohn officiating.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the local chapters of the American Red Cross and Salvation Army.

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Beryl Dixon Ellixson, 79, of Virgilina, died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at Duke Medical Center.
Born March 7, 1921, in Person County, N.C., she was the daughter of Castor Lee Dixon and Gladys Tuck Dixon.
She was married
to Woodrow V. Ellixson Sr., who predeceased her. She was a member of Florence Avenue Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Kay E. Smith of Graham, N.C., and Glenda E. Lassiter of Virgilina; four sons, Woodrow V. Ellixson Jr., Ronnie Ellixson, and Ray Ellixson, all of Southport, N.C., and Gene Ellixson of Virgilina; two sisters, Hazel D. Gentry of Alaska and Gladys Lee D. Yancey of Bon Air; two brothers, Guy W. Dixon of Calif. and Allen T. Dixon of Ariz.; fifteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Florence Avenue Baptist Church with the Rev. Leslie Puryear officiating. Interment
will follow at Virgilina cemetery.

Walter Ferrell
DANVILLE, Va. - Walter Scott Ferrell, 83, formerly of 123 Wendin Lane, died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at Abingdon Place of Danville after three months of declining health.
Born April 13, 1917, in Halifax County, he was the son of Scott Henry Ferrell and Mary Ferrell Ferrell.
He was married
to his first wife, Emma Walls Ferrell, and later to Gladys Mitchell Ferrell. He lived his life in Danville and Pittsylvania County and was employed by Pyrofax Gas Co. as a truck driver before his retirement.
He was a member of Moseley Memorial United Methodist Church and was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II.
Survivors include one brother, Eldridge Ferrell of Dry Fork; one sister, Florine Browning of Danville; step-daughter, Loretta Thompson of Warrenton and two step-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wives, he was predeceased by two brothers, Edward Ferrell and Howard Ferrell.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Mike Hearp officiating.
The family will be at the home of Eldridge Ferrell, 15829 Mount Cross Road.

Whitley Moegling
AXTON, Va. - Whitley Jenise Moegling, 11, of 301 Martin Drive, died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, at the residence.
Born July 14, 1989, in Danville, she was the daughter of Jenifer Denise Moegling and Brian Moegling. She was known for her many appearances on the annual March of Dimes Cablerama.
In addition to her parents, survivors include two sisters, India Lovelace and Peper McCadden, both of Axton, and her grandparents.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Bibleway Cathedral with Apostle Lawrence G. Campbell officiating.

DANVILLE, Va. - Eva Wyatt New, 65, of 1602 Westover Drive Lot #1, died Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a number of years of declining health.
Born Oct. 8, 1935, in Abingdon, she was the daughter of Joe Franklin Wyatt and Susie Inscor Wyatt.
She was married
to Robert Larry New, who predeceased her Sept. 27, 1984.
She lived most of her life in Danville and worked as a nurses assistant at Piney Forest Health Care until her retirement. She was a member of Riveroak Church of God.
Survivors include a daughter, Beverly Lawton of Axton and one sister, Edna Childress of Abingdon.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Eleanor "Skeeter" Lawton and a brother, Garland W. Wyatt.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Tim Nuckles officiating. Interment
will follow at Mount View cemetery.
