Hilda Wilkerson
DANVILLE, Va. - Hilda F. Wilkerson, 75, of 231 Jordan Street, died Monday, Feb. 19, 2001 at the residence.
Born July 14, 1925 in Danville, she was the daughter of Morgan Freeman and Callie Pruitt Freeman.
She was married
to Willie O. Wilkerson, who predeceased her. She lived most of her life in Danville and was a member of Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church. She worked for Dan River Inc. before her retirement.
Survivors include one daughter, Vicki Wilkerson Townsley of Danville; one son, Ronnie O. Wilkerson of Bedford; one sister, Jackie Touchstone of Danville; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by one sister, Madiline Ella Thorpe.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Freddy Vicks and the Rev. Lee VonElme officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel and at other times at the residence.
Barker Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.
Ruby Barbour
DANVILLE, Va. - Ruby Gusler Barbour, 79, of 855 Arnett Blvd., died Feb. 20, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 7, 1921, in Franklin County, Va., in the Crossroads Community, he was the son of James Robert Gusler and Mattie Sigmon Gusler.
He attended Chritian Heritage Church and was a member of Highland Park Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Dennis A. Barbour, of Roanoke, Va.; two daughters, Nancye B. Ricketts, of Danville, Va., Joy E. Barbour of Ft. Lauderdale, Fl.; three brothers, Luther Gusler, Hubert Gusler both of Chelsea, Mass, Melvin Gusler, of Milton, N.C.; three sisters Gracie Potter, of Milton, N.C., Dorothy Gauldin, of Danville, Va., Marie Williamson, of Alton, Va.; one son-in-law, Robert D. Ricketts; one daughter-in-law Barbara R. Barbour; five grandchildren, Bobby Rickets, Paul Ricketts, Jo Hill, Elizabeth Barbour and Sarah Barbour; three great-grandchildren Joseph Ricketts, Caleb Ricketts, Ryan Hill.
She was predeceased in death by one sister, Macie Atkins and one deceased brother, Herbert Gusler; one great-grandson, Cody Hill and two other unnamed great-grandchildren who are in heaven with her.
A funeral will be held 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Barker Chapel with the Rev. Clyde Everett and assisted by Paul Ricketts grandson. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Barker Funeral Home, and at other time at 102 Parrish Road, Danville, Va.
Robert Brown, Sr.
HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. - Robert Edward Brown Sr., 71, of 858 Deer Mountain Estates, died Feb. 20, 2001, at the residence.
Born May 17, 1929, in Riverdale, Md., he was the son of David Brown and Jenny Jones Brown.
He was married
to Barbara Ann Ingram Brown, who died August 4, 1998. He lived most of his life in Loudoun County, Va. He retired in 1981 from the United States Government where he was an assistant in the printing office.
Survivors include one son Robert E. Brown Jr. of Harpers Ferry, W.Va.; one daughter, Sharon B. Marsh of Sterling, Va., one grandaughter Jennifer Skorich of Sterling, Va.; one grandson Gary Marsh and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 10 a.m. Friday at the graveside in Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Henry Taylor officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Harry Foley
DANVILLE, Va. - Harry Ross Foley, 85, of 133 Lipton Lane, died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 25, 1915 in Patrick County, he was the son of John Abe Foley and Fannie Bryant Foley.
He was married
to Ruth Durham Foley, who predeceased him in 1960, and remarried
to Dorothy Ferguson Foley, who predeceased him in 1995. He graduated from Blue Ridge Mission School in Patrick County and was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II. He was the former owner of Patrick County Hardware in Stuart and later worked for Piedmont Hardware, Smith Hardware, and Booth White Sporting Goods. He once held the title for largest rainbow trout caught in Virginia and was a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church.
Survivors include two stepchildren, Robert W. Ferguson, Carolyn O. Scruggs, both of Danville; two sisters, Jean F. Ferguson of Bassett, Lenna F. Rakes of Lakeland, Fla., and seven step-grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents and wives, by four brothers, Fred Foley, Arthur Foley, John Foley, Zander Foley and three sisters, Kate F. Crawford, Grace F. Ashworth and Esther F. Ingram.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Lee Ellison and the Rev. Steve Carlton officiating. Interment
will follow at Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Townes Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of Carolyn Scruggs, 719 Norfolk Place in Surry Hills.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Moffett Memorial Baptist Church Music Fund or a charity of choice.
Don Brown
DANVILLE, Va. - Don Wendell Brown, 69, of 11250 Martinsville Highway, died Feb. 20, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 1, 1931, in Roanoke, Va., he was the son of Dewey C. Brown and Winnie Littrell Brown.
He was married
to Phyllis John Brown on June 7, 1958. He moved to Danville in 1966 where prior to his retirement he was employed as an Environmental Quality Supervisor for the City of Danville. He was formerly the head of the microbiology lab at Danville Regional Medical Center and formerly a chemistry professor at Danville Community College. He was chairman for the Brosville Horse Show for 30 years and was a member and past president for the Brosville Ruritan Club and served as National Director for the Ruritans. He was a former treasurer for the Virginia Central District 4H Council and served as Chairmen of The Brosville Volunteer Fire Department for several years. He was a leader for The Shady Knoll 4H Club. He was of the episcopal faith. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean conflict.
Survivors in addition to his wife of the residence include two sons, Dewey Brown of Warrenton, Va., Philip Brown of Danville, Va.; one sister, Betty B. Hawkins of Nashville, Tenn. and three grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Brosville United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Rochford officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel, and at other times at the residence.

Roy Gammon
KEELING, Va. - Roy Keith Gammon, 33, of 912 Oak Grove Road, died Feb. 19, 2001, at his residence.
Born April 23, 1967 he was the son of Albert Haynes Gammon and Linda Thacker Gammon.
He was engaged to marry Donna Leigh Dickens. He had lived all his life in Pittsylvania County and Danville. He had worked with Dan River Inc. for several years prior to being employed by Intertape Inc. He was of the Baptist Faith.
Survivors include, his mother, Linda Thacker Gammon of Danville, Va., his fiancee Donna Leigh Dickens of Keeling, Va., one brother, James Albert Gammon of Mebane, N.C.; two sisters, Donna G. Dillon of Salisbury, N.C., Betty G. Criscoe of Mooresville, N.C.
A funeral will be held 3 p.m. Thursday from the graveside in Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating.

Lewis Hawkins Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Lewis Warren Hawkins Jr., 74, of 170 Rocklawn Ave., died Feb. 20, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center.
Born Jan. 2, 1927, in Roxboro, N.C., he was the son of Lewis W. Hawkins Sr. and Mary Blackstock Hawkins. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War.
He was married
to Iva Newman Hawkins on June 15, 1946. He was a member of Highland Park Baptist Church and a member of the church choir, deacon board, and President of the Fellowship Class. He retired after 32 years as a life insurance underwriter for Southwestern General Life, he also worked part time for 8 years at Virginia Bank and Trust.
Survivors in addition to his wife of the residence include, one son, Randy W. Hawkins of Danville Va.; one daughter, Vicki H. Moore of Port Orange, Fla.; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and two godchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Highland Park Baptist Church with the Rev. Fred Cox and Rev. H. Ray Newman officiating. Interment
will be held at Highland Burial Park.

Lorana Howerton
DANVILLE, Va. - Lorana Bradley Howerton, 80, 885 Piney Forest Road, died Tuesday Feb. 20, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 12, 1920, she was the daughter of Archie Bradley and Lucy Thompson.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include five sons, Winston H. Howerton, of Harrisburg, Pa., Clarence B. Howerton, Carl L. Howerton, both of Danville, Va., Wilbert J. Howerton of Atlantic City, N.J., Jerome A. Howerton of Danville; one daughter, Areweeter Green of Danville; one brother, Esten Bradley of Washington, D.C.; one sister, Elreatha Hailey of Danville, and eleven grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at the Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home. Interment
will follow at the Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
A viewing will be held 4-8 p.m. Friday at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home.
The family is residing at 99 Beavers Mill Road.

Otha Jefferson
DANVILLE, Va. - Otha George Jefferson, 94, of 2526 North Main St., died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Oct. 20, 1906, he was the son of Charlie Hardy Jefferson and Mary Jefferson.
He was married
to Louise Wiles Jefferson, who died Sept. 9, 1992. He lived his life in Pittsylvania County and Newport News and prior to his retirement worked as a painter for Newport News Ship Building and Dry Dock. He later worked as a self-employed painter. He was a member of the Tabernacle.
Survivors include two sons, Clinton H. Jefferson of Ringgold, Va., Clyde Gilmer Jefferson of Newport News, Va.; one brother, Charlie Hardy Jefferson of Danville, Va.; three sisters, Coryn J. Smith, Inzy J. Swicegood, Blanche J. Mooneyham, all of Danville, Va.; eleven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday, at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Lamarr Mooneyham officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Lucy Jones
DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Lucy Elliot Jones, 71, of 317 Slaughter Ave., died Feb. 20, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 28, 1929, she was the daughter of Dula Thomas Elliot Sr. and Pearl Thomas Elliot.
She was married
to Robert Carlton Jones Sr. who died April 26, 1992. She lived all her life in Pittsylvania County. She was educated in the Pittsylvania County Public School System and a graduate of the former Whitmell Farm Life School. She retired from Corning Inc. where she was a quality control inspector after 17 years of service. She was a member of Mount Hermon Baptist Church and was a Pocahontas member.
Survivors include three sons, Robert C. Jones Jr. of Danville, Va., Terry Jones of Northern Va., Scott Jones, of Danville, Va.; one daughter Lisa J. Rowland, of Danville, Va.; three sisters, Dorothy J. Green, of Norfolk, Va., Thelma J. Powell, of Norfolk, Va., Louise J. Dix, of Danville, Va.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one brother and one sister.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Tommy Deal officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence 317 Slaughter Ave.
