Burnett Miller
ALTAVISTA, Va. - Burnett William Miller, 67, of 803 Parks Street, died Monday, Feb. 19, 2001 at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born Oct. 16, 1933, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of George Miller and Polly Gilbert Miller.
He was self-employed as a logger and a member of the Staunton Baptist Church in Long Island, Va.
Survivors include two sons, Bernard Graves of Maryland, Va., Edward Hall of Long Island, Va.; four daughters, Michelle Graves of Altavista, Va., Cinderella Vanhook of Martinsville, Va., Geraldine Hall of Gretna, Va., Donna Barbour of Hurt, Va.; four brothers, James Miller, Warren Miller, Sam Miller, Leroy Miller, all of Long Island, Va.; six sisters, Everlena Payne, Fannie Miller, Libby Slayton, Ruth Crews, all of Long Island, Va., Resse M. Hall of Gretna, Va., Joyce Waller of Wilmington, Del.; thirteen grandchildren; three son-in-laws and two daughter-in-laws.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Friday at Staunton Baptist Church by Dr. P.A. Medley officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Col. John Payne
STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. - Colonel John Kenneth Payne, USMC (Ret.), age 65, of Stone Mountain, GA, died on Monday, February 19, 2001 at Hospice Atlanta following a courageous battle with cancer.
He is survived by his beloved fiancee Mary Harrell, his children John Kenneth Payne, Jr., William Donald Payne, and Suzanne Payne Fanning, his fiancee's son Joshua Warren Harrell, his brother William Henry Payne, and his sister June Payne Fateley. He was also the cherished grandfather of Brendon Edward Fanning, Walker Kenneth Fanning, Laurel Katherine Fanning, and Nathaniel Glazer Payne.
Born in Danville, VA, he received a Bachelor of Arts from Catawba College. He went on to receive a Master of Arts and an Education Specialist degree from Appalachian State University. His distinguished career in the United States Marine Corps included service in Okinawa and Vietnam. His numerous decorations include the Legion of Merit and Bronze Star with Combat V. He served as Senior Inspector Instructor with the 4th Force Service Support Group, FMF, USMCR in Atlanta and retired at the rank of Colonel in 1988.
He was the owner of Bedrock Rentals, a local chain of appliance and furniture stores. He recently served on the late Senator Coverdell's Military Advisory Council and was elected as chair of the Marine Corps Coordinating Council of Greater Atlanta.
He was an accomplished athlete who participated in football, boxing, wrestling, and weightlifting.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 Thursday evening at Arlington Chapel.
A memorial service will be held to celebrate Ken's life on Friday at 11:00 at Arlington Chapel. Internment services will follow at Arlington Memorial Park with full military honors.

Roscoe J. Pell
DANVILLE, Va. - Roscoe James Pell, 88, of 2015 Westover Drive, died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at the Riverside Health Care Center.
Born Oct. 26, 1912, he was the son of Alvin Clifford Pell and Ada Barnes Pell.
He was married
to Beatrice Hundley Pell, who survives. He was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church. He lived his entire life in Danville, Va., and was retired from Dan River Mill Inc. where he worked as a loom fixer in No. 4-B weave.
Survivors in addition to his wife include, one daughter Jean P. Knowles of Virginia Beach, Va.; one grandchild and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at the graveside with the Rev. William C. Blalock officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel.

John Robertson Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - John Robertson Jr., 72, of 511 Jefferson Street, Apt. 3. died Monday Feb. 19, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 25, 1928, in Pittsylvania County, Va., he was the son of Johnnie Robertson Sr. and Mary Ross.
He worked as a carpenter for H. Brincefield.
Survivors include three sons, Jerry Robertson, James Robertson both of Danville, Va., Reginald Napper of Howiston, Pa.; one brother James Robertson of Las Vegas, Nev.; four sisters, Frances Keen of Danville, Va., Helena Smith of Jersey City, N.J., Dora Hairston, Patricia Thomas both of Danville Va., and five grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence 1696 Riverridge Road.

Robert Stowe, Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Robert Wayne Stowe Sr., 63, of 412 Brook Drive, died Feb. 19, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 5, 1937, in Dry Fork, he was the son of Henson T. Stowe and Marion Boswen Stowe.
He was married
to Janet Bass Stowe who survives. He was of the Methodist faith and worked as a supervisor for Dan River Mill Inc.
Survivors in addition to his wife include, three sons, Robert Stowe Jr. of Danville Va., Keith D. Stowe of West Palm Beach, Fla., Timothy F. Stowe of Greenville, S.C.; one brother H.T. Stowe Jr. of Danville Va.; one sister Brenda Hardison of Danville, Va. and six grandchildren.

will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Grace Walker
RINGGOLD, Va. - Grace Jones Walker, formerly of 5349 Rick Springs Road, died Feb. 19, 2001, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Feb. 12, 1935, she was the daughter of Alfred Jefferson Jones and Sallie Blanche Cassada Jones.
She was married
to Linwood Bob Walker on Oct. 14, 1961. She lived most of her life in the Ringgold Community of Pittsylvania County. She worked in the No. 2 card room of the former Riverside Division of Dan River Inc. until her retirement due to health reasons with over 20 years of service. She was of the baptist faith and a member of the Woodmen of the World.
Survivors include one son, Alfred H. Walker of Virginia Beach, Va.; one step-son, Bobby L. Walker of Ringold, Va.; one step-daughter Joan M. Lee of Augusta, Ga.; one brother Robert T. Jones of Charlottesville, Va.; two sisters, Dorothy J. Hunscuker of Claremont, N.C., and Ruth J. Testerman of Barren Springs, Va.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at the graveside in Floral Hills Memory Gardens with the Rev. Marvin Hawkins officiating.

Jerry Wilbourne
SCOTTSBURG, Va. - Jerry Moody Wilbourne, 52, of 6029 Green Level Road, died Feb. 20, 2001 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Feb. 16, 1949, in Clarksville, Va., he was the son of Bernard Wilbourne and Evelyn Dunn Wilbourne.
He was married
to Donna Guill Wilbourne. He worked as a mechanic and was of the baptist faith.
Survivors in addition to his wife of the residence include, one daughter, Kacey Marie Wilbourne of Scottsburg; one sister, Susan W. Guill of Scottsburg and one brother Gary Wilbourne of Oxford, N.C.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rudolph Jacobs officiating. Interment
will take place at Oak Ridge cemetery.

Hilda Wilkerson
DANVILLE, Va. - Hilda F. Wilkerson, 75, of 231 Jordan Street, died Monday, Feb. 19, 2001 at the residence.
Born July 14, 1925 in Danville, she was the daughter of Morgan Freeman and Callie Pruitt Freeman.
She was married
to Willie O. Wilkerson, who predeceased her. She lived most of her life in Danville.
She was a member of Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church. She worked for Dan River Inc. prior to her her retirement.
Survivors include one daughter, Vicki Wilkerson Townsley of Danville; one son, Ronnie O. Wilkerson of Bedford; one sister, Jackie Touchstone of Danville; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by one sister, Madiline Ella Thorpe.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Freddy Vicks and the Rev. Lee VonElme officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Clyde Lewis
DANVILLE, Va. - Clyde Lester Lewis, 85, formerly of 1149 Halifax Road, died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001 at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born July 15, 1915, he was the son of Fletcher Dodson Lewis and Elizabeth “Lizzie” Jones Lewis.
He was married
to Margaret Dodson Lewis, on June 29, 1935. He lived all his life in Pittsylvania County and Danville. He had farmed in the Laurel Grove Community for a number of years along with being employed by Dan River Inc. as a security guard until his retirement. He was a member of Laurel Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, James C. “J.C.” Lewis Sr. of Danville, Va., Ronnie L. Lewis of Chatham, Va., George D. Lewis of Danville, Va.; two daughters, Patsy L. Francis of Gretna, Va., Betty L. Green of of Jessup, Ga.; eleven grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. James Bullock officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Zella Moore
GRETNA, Va. - Zella Gibson Moore, age 84, of 1676 Piney Road, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 8, 1916 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Fred Gibson and Blanche Shields Gibson. She was predeceased by a brother, Moncie Gibson and three sisters, Zola Overstreet, Hattie Gibson and Ruby King. Mrs. Moore was a member of Greenbay Christian Church and a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband of fifty-seven years, Billy Moore of the residence, two sons and a daughter-in-law, Clyde and Joyce Moore of Gretna and Kenny Moore of Gretna; one brother, Charlie M. Gibson of Lynchburg; two sisters, Eva Crider of Gretna and Agnes Covington of Amelia.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday February 24, 2001 at Greenbay Christian Church by Rudy Hearn, Minister and J.C. Anderson, Minister. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
