Anne Burton Marlowe
EDEN, N.C. - Anne Burton Marlowe, 85, of 258 Mebane St., died Monday at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
Born in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of William Henry Burton and Louise Burch Burton.
She was retired from the Fieldcrest Store as a sales associate.
She was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church and of the Home Builders Sunday School class. She was voted a Mother of the Year and awarded a lifetime membership of the United Methodist Women. She was a member of the former Draper Woman's Club and also a member of the Morehead Memorial Hospital's volunteer services program and, as an added service, she crocheted caps for newborn babies.
She was married to W. Otis Marlowe.
In addition to her husband, of the residence, she is survived by three daughters, Carol M. Gwynn and Pam M. Dove, both of Eden and Jean M. Hall of Stoneville; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by one son, Billy Marlowe; a brother, Hunter Burton and two sisters, Eleanor B. Thompson and Marie B. Johnson.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church of Draper. Interment will follow at Ridgeview Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be held 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Fair Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the residence.

Eugene R. Motley
DANVILLE, Va. - Eugene R. Motley, 68, of 1000 Westover Drive, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at Danville Regional Medical Center, after one month of declining health.
Born Feb. 23, 1934, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Murry Motley and Lucy Shelton Motley.
Mr. Motley had lived his entire life in Danville and Pittsylvania County and was a graduate of Chatham High School. He worked in the meat department at A&P Supermarket for many years and at his retirement in 1999 was a partner in the Old Dutch Supermarket chain.
Mr. Motley was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church and taught Sunday school for many years. He was an active participant of the Piedmont Mall Walker's Club.
He was married to Nancye Jean Bigger Motley.
In addition to his wife of the home, he is survived by a son, Michael A. Motley and his wife, Pam C. Motley, of South Boston; a daughter, Terri Lynn Motley of Dry Fork; two sisters, Vickie M. Gwaltney of Eden, N.C. and Effie M. Giles of Johnson City, Tenn. and a brother, Dale Motley of Chatham.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Ross Range Sr. officiating. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times at the residence of his mother-in-law, Maude Bigger, 206 Ruskin Street.

LYNCHBURG, Va. - James Mullins, 55, died Tuesday, Jan.21, 2003,at Lynchburg General Hospital.

Dreamy Winter Rose Overstreet
DANVILLE, Va. - Dreamy Winter Rose Overstreet, four months, of 704 North Main St., Apt. #3, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born September 2, 2002, in Danville, she was the daughter of Brandon David Overstreet and Sarah Alison Cox Overstreet.
In addition to her parents, of the residence, she is survived by one brother, Jacob Overstreet, of Danville and one sister, Dixie Cox of Danville; maternal grandparents, Wayne and Nancy Hogan of Gretna; and paternal grandparents, Melvin and Vicky Overstreet of Keeling.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel. Interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel. At other times they will be at the residence of her paternal grandparents, 10073 Old Richmond Road, Keeling.

Walter Ray Poindexter
REIDSVILLE, N.C. - Walter Ray Poindexter, 59, of 2101 South Scales St. died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, 11 a.m. at Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel.
Mr. Poindexter was born in Rockingham County to Luna Bell Strader Poindexter and the late Hardin William Poindexter. He served in the U.S. Army, was an electrician, and an accomplished musician playing various stringed instruments, and played in a band for some time.
Mr. Poindexter is survived by his mother, Luna Bell Strader Poindexter of Pelham; his daughter, Darlene Poindexter Lefebvre and husband, Thomas of Danville, Va.; granddaughters, Nicole Lefebvre and Paige Strader; sisters, Louise Rice, Mary Tilley, Betty Faber, Nell Roach, Linda Davis, Angela Perry, Alice Cox, Susan Doyle; brothers, Clarence Poindexter, Hardin Poindexter Jr., Floyd Poindexter, Leon Poindexter and Frank Poindexter. He was preceded in death by his father, Hardin Poindexter and sister, Doris Poindexter.

Charlie Jim Rice
DANVILLE, Va. - Charlie Jim Rice, 77, of 431 Gay St., died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 9, 1925, in Danville, he was the son of Rosevelt and Beatrice Rice, who predeceased him.
For many years he was employed by the now defunct Harnsberger Department Store.
He was married to Helen Rice, who predeceased him earlier this month.
He is survived by three daughters, Patricia Keene, Linda Rice and Nancy Rice, all of Danville; one son, Bruce Rice, also of Danville and a host of grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and his wife, he was predeceased by one sister, Lucille Smith.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at the Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Samuel Griffith officiating. Interment will follow in the Floral Hills Memory Garden Cemetery.

Nancy Carol Akins Russell
DANVILLE, Va. - Nancy Carol Akins Russell, 64, of 196 Mayo St., died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 13, 1938, in Danville, she was a daughter of Burnest Akins and Nannie Goins Akins.
She was a homemaker and member of the Mount Carmal Baptist Church.
She was married to Henry Russell, who predeceased her.
She is survived by three daughters, Robin Glass, Kim Scott and Lee Brooks, all of Danville; two sons, Barry Russell and Ray Russell, both of Danville; one stepson, Steve Malloy of Richmond; and one brother, Chester Akins of Danville.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at the Mount Carmal Baptist Church with the Rev. James E. Stewart officiating. Interment will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery.

Merritt 'Phil' Saunders
DANVILLE, Va. - Merritt "Phil" Saunders, 73, of 269 Hairston St., died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health for the past three years, was a patient at Piney Forest Health Care Center for one month and in the hospital for one day.
Born May 20, 1929, in Halifax County, he was the son of John Saunders and Ethel McCormick Saunders.
He lived most of his life in Danville and was a member of Arlington Baptist Church. He was a gas truck driver for Hunter Oil Company and served five years in Korea with the U.S. Army.
He was married to Barbara Scearce Saunders, who survives.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Michael Jason Saunders of Danville.
The graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Floral Hills Memory Gardens with the Rev. Dr. Samuel Greeson officiating. Military rites will be conducted by American Legion Dan River Post #1097 Honor Guard.
The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence.

Max James Tappero
FOREST, Va. - Max James Tappero, 73, of Forest, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003.
Private graveside services were conducted by the Rev. Steve Parker in Highland Burial Park, Danville, on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003.
Born in McCune, Kan., Aug. 10, 1929, Max moved to Eatonville, Wash., at an early age. He was the son of the late Max Thomas Tappero and Eva Francott Tappero. He was the husband of Jane Schoolfield Tappero for 36 years.
He is also survived by two sons, Matthew James Tappero of Kill Devil Hills, N.C. and Bryant Hare IV of Raleigh, N.C.; three grandchildren, Morgan Tappero, Louise Schoolfield Hare and Bryant Hare V; and his sister, Mrs. Gail Bloom of Eatonville, Wash.
Max was a cattleman and professional horseman. He was nationally known in the United States and Canada as a judge of quarter horses, appaloosas, cutting horses and hunters. He was twice judge of the Quarter Horse Congress. He was former president of the Virginia Trail Riders Association and former Master of Foxhounds for the Bedford County Hunt. He was recognized by Gov. Mills E. Godwin for his service on Virginia Opportunities for Agriculture. He was an original organizer of the Bedford County 4-H Drill Team.
Max attended Washington State University and was a member of the Delta Chi fraternity. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He was very interested in the Virginia Horse Center, P.O. Box 1051, Lexington, Va., and the VPI College of Veterinary Medicine, Blacksburg, Va.
