DANVILLE, Va. - Alberta Hereford Poole, 77, of 303B Bradley Road, formerly of 116 Hamilton St., died Monday, Feb. 19, 2001 at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 28, 1923, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of the Frank and Maggie Hairston Hereford.
She was married
to Zera Poole, who predeceased her.
Survivors include one brother, Everett Glenn Hereford of Danville; one sister-in-law, Helen M. Hereford of Danville.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Shiloh Baptist Church with the Rev. Cecil Bridgforth will officiate. Interment
will follow in the Oak Hill cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her niece, Deborah Jennings, 303B Bradley Road, Danville.

Carl Sasser
AUGUSTA, Ga. - Carl Lee Sasser, 73, died on Feb. 19, 2001, at Doctors Hospital in Augusta.
Born in Danville, Va., he was the son of John Adam Sasser and Mary Clark Sasser.
He was married
to Mary Bohler Sasser of the residence. He attended Schoolfield High School. He served in the Navy during World War II; he then moved to Augusta where he was a successful business man.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, William Sasser of Augusta, Ga.; one daughter, Carol Sasser Nattinger of Augusta, Ga.; one brother, Henry Sasser of Danville, Va.; one sister, Marie Sasser Shelton of Pelham, N.C.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Grady Ray Sasser, William Earl Sasser, George Franklin Sasser, and one sister, Mary Lou Sasser McNeil.
Funeral services were held Wednesday Feb, 21, 2001, in Augusta, Ga.
Marguerite Tuthill
DANVILLE, Va. - Marguerite E. Tuthill, 83, of 141 Swain Drive, died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Nov. 2, 1917, in Keene, N.Y., she was the daughter of Orlando R. Estes and Mary Ellen O’Connell Estes
She was married
to Harry E. Tuthill in 1948. She was a parishioner at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
She attended Champlain Valley Nursing College and became a registered professional nurse. Over the course of her career she worked at the New York Foundling Hospital in New York City, the Champlain Valley Hospital in Plattsburg, N.Y., and the Tompkins County Hospital and Reconstruction Home in Ithaca, N.Y.
She was married
in 1948 in Watkins Glen, N.Y., and in 1976 she and her husband left to spend their retirement in Danville. They had been married
43 years when Mr. Tuthill died in 1991.
Survivors include one son, Robert E. Tuthill, of Danville, Va.; one daughter Mary Tuthill Schwartz of Brewster, N.Y., and two grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one brother, Marion McCourt, of Miami, Fla., and one brother Charles Estes, of Keene, N.Y.
Private funeral arrangements will be handled by Barker Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Gracie Alderson
DANVILLE, Va. - Gracie Hardy Alderson, 91, formerly of 353 Gradual Grade Road, Sutherlin, died at Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born Sept. 22, 1909 in Keeling, she was the daughter of James Washington Hardy and Nettie Lewis Hardy.
She was married
Jan. 30, 1929 to Linwood K. Alderson, who predeceased her. She was a member of Afton Road Primitive Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
Survivors include three sons, J. Wayne Alderson of Danville, Gerald L. Alderson of Winston-Salem, N.C., W. Joseph Alderson of Keeling; one brother, William Hardy of Ringgold; two sisters, Ethel Slaughter of Ringgold, Mabel Hardy of Danville; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Danny Parker officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park, Danville.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Barker Chapel and at other times at the residence of Wayne Alderson, 1428 Twin Arch Drive.

Fleetwood Cocke
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Fleetwood Adams Cocke, 92, formerly of South Boston, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001 at Chippenham Medical Center.
Born April 11, 1908 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Jesse Carter Adams and Ella Maude Adams.
She was married
to Anderson Thomas Cocke, who predeceased her.
Survivors include one daughter, Nancy C. Campbell of Chesterfield; one son, Tommy Cocke of Chapel Hill, N.C.; one grandson and two sisters, Dorris A. Marilla and Ruby A. Scruggs, both of Richmond.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Bob Fox and Martha Jenkins officiating. Interment
will follow at 3:30 p.m. at Highland Burial Park, Danville.
The family will receive friends 2-4 p.m. Saturday at Powell Funeral Home.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Luezetta Harrison died Friday, Feb. 16, 2001 at Southern Maryland Hospital.
Born Nov. 7, 1929 in Pittsylvania County, Va., she was the daughter of Percy Thompson and Lois Thompson.
She was married
to John Harrison, who predeceased her. She was a member of Shockoe Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Rosazella Glass of Clinton, Md.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; five sisters, Leonvell Petty of Blains, Va., Virginia Harrison, Catherine Orr, Ruby Houston, all of Wickliffe, Ohio, Annie Pearl Coleman of New Carlton, Md. and seven brothers, Willie Ed Thompson of Danville, Va., John A. Thompson of Blairs, Va.; Richard Thompson of Washington, D.C., James Thompson, Kenny Thompson of Martinsville, Va., Percy Thompson, Jr. of Los Angeles, Calif.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by one brother, Alizona Thompson.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Shockoe Baptist Church. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.

Patsy Labiak
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Patsy C. Labiak, 57, died February 22, 2001 in a local hospital.
Mrs. Labiak was a member of the Willis Memorial Baptist church. She previously retired from the Danville Health Department. She was predeceased in death by her parents, Hubert and Irene Collins.
She is survived by her husband, C.R. “Chuck” Labiak of Virginia Beach and two sons, R. Scott Labiak and his wife Beth of Virginia Beach and C. Jason Labiak of Virginia Beach, a sister, Barbara C. Tanner and her husband Neal, two brothers, Kenneth M. Collins and his wife, Sandra and H. Edward Collins and his wife Brenda all of Danville, one grandson, Jesse Patrick Labiak of Virginia Beach and several nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed by her friends and family. She was a shining ray of sunlight to all who knew her.
A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Willis Memorial Baptist Church, Cascade, VA. The Rev. Haywood Alcorn and Glen Hudson will be performing the services.

Obelia Lanier
JAVA, Va. - Obelia Lanier, 84, of 781 Church Road, Java, died suddenly Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001 at the residence.
Born Nov. 13, 1916 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Ruben Glass and Mary Logan Glass.
She married
Roosevelt Lanier. She was a homemaker and a member of the Riceville Baptist Church in Java. She also was a former member of the Usher Board and Nurses Aide Unit.
Survivors include four daughters, Genetta L. Brown of Philadelphia, Pa., Eucile Ballenger of Bartlet, Tenn., Clesther Perkins of Philadelphia, Pa., Nancy Gwynn of Yanceyville, N.C.; three sons, Leander Lanier and Jerry Lanier, both of Java, Carlton Lanier of Danville; three sisters, Willie Mae Walker of Burns Level, N.C., Hildred Womack and Mildred Carter, both of Philadelphia, Pa.; two brothers, Richard Glass of New York, Walter Glass of Philadelphia, Pa.; sixteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by one brother, Royal Glass and three sisters, Sarah Miller, Mabel Smith and Jessie Terry.
The funeral will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at the Riceville Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronnie Walker officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.

Roosevelt Lanier
JAVA, Va. - Roosevelt Lanier, 82, of 781 Church Road, Java, died suddenly Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001 at the residence.
Born Feb. 27, 1919 in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Charlie Lanier and Janie Blair Lanier.
He was married
to Obelia Lanier and was a United States Army veteran. He was a member of the Riceville Baptist Church and worked as a farmer until his retirement.
Survivors include three sons, Leander Lanier and Jerry Lanier, both of Java, Carlton Lanier of Danville; four daughters, Genetta L. Brown and Clesther Perkins, both of Philadelphia, Pa.; Eucile Ballenger of Bartlet, Tenn., Nancy Gwynn of Yanceville, N.C.; five sisters, Frances Terry and Vivian Terry, both of Washington, D.C., Ethel Grasty of Java, Virginia Stevens and Sylvia Stevens, both of Hollywood, Md.; seven brothers, Pernell Lanier and Donnell Lanier, both of Java, James Lanier of Chatham, Thomas Lanier of Charleston, S.C., Lawrence Lanier, Charlie Lanier Jr., and Ronnie Lanier, all of Washington, D.C.; sixteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by one brother, Willie G. Lanier and one sister, Gay Logan.

Clyde Lewis
DANVILLE, Va. - Clyde Lester Lewis, 85, formerly of 1149 Halifax Road, died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001 at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born July 15, 1915, he was the son of Fletcher Dodson Lewis and Elizabeth “Lizzie” Jones Lewis.
He was married
to Margaret Dodson Lewis, on June 29, 1935. He lived all his life in Pittsylvania County and Danville. He had farmed in the Laurel Grove Community for a number of years along with being employed by Dan River Inc. as a security guard until his retirement. He was a member of Laurel Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, James C. “J.C.” Lewis Sr. of Danville, Va., Ronnie L. Lewis of Chatham, Va., George D. Lewis of Danville, Va.; two daughters, Patsy L. Francis of Gretna, Va., Betty L. Green of of Jessup, Ga.; eleven grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. James Bullock officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
