DANVILLE, Va. - Howard Lee Barley, 87, of 143 Beaver’s Mill Road, Danville, died Friday, Feb. 23, 2001 at Piney Forest Nursing Home.
Born March 28, 1913 in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Callie Barley and Mary Faulkner Barley.
He was married
to Madeline Anderson Barley, who predeceased him.
Survivors include one daughter, Penny Clark of Danville, five stepdaughters, Elmira Hartridge and Suphonia Gray, both of Washington, D.C., Dorothy Dodson of Keeling, Phyllis Marable of Danville, Irma Johnson of East Orange, N.J.; one stepson, Jesse Anderson of Danville; six sisters, Nannie Stone, Mary Adams, Willie Reynolds and Jean Fitzgerald, all of Danville, Barbara Eanes of Cleveland, Ohio, Frances Ferrell of Dry Fork; three brothers, Royal Barley and Calie Barley, both of Danville, Robert Barley of Chatham and eighteen grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 12 p.m. Tuesday at the Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Roger Jackson officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Charlie Easley
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Charlie Easley, 99, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001 at Woodview Nursing Home in South Boston.
He was born Jan. 10, 1902 in Halifax County.
Survivors include five grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Monday at Crawford, Garrett and Burton Funeral Home in Halifax with the Rev. Willie Yancey officiating.

June Glover
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - June Rose Morgan Glover, 69, of 1308 Friend Avenue, South Boston, died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001 at the residence.
Born Nov. 15, 1931 in La Crosse, she was the daughter of Charles Henry Morgan and Mattie Lou Sizemore Morgan.
She was married
to Armstead Boyd “Joe” Glover, Jr., who survives. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where she was an active member of the choir.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include one daughter, Susan Lynn Glover of Williamsburg; one son, Armstead Boyd Glover III of Amelia; one sister, Margaret Morgan Johnson of Greensboro, N.C. and two grandsons.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church with the Revs. Russell Lee and Melvin Bradshaw officiating. Interment
will follow at Oak Ridge cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Powell Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
The family suggests memorials may be made to the Halifax Regional Hospice or the Patrick Henry Boys Home.

DANVILLE, Va. - Today, February 22, 2001, I, Iris Taylor-Hawker went to be with my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. There I will again be with my husband Clifton D. Hawker and my Parents, Walter C. Taylor and Joie Howard Taylor, and also my sister, Jackie T. Ferguson.
Sorryfully, I leave behind my brother W. Sager Taylor, Sister-in-Law Frances D. Taylor of Danville, Va., sister, Faye T. Murdock, Brother-in-Law William C. Murdock, of Blacksburg, Va. Also one neice, Donna Carole Ferguson of College Park, Md., One Grand Neice Joie Scruggs Gray, of Pawley’s Island, S.C. and Two Great-Grand Nieces and a Nephew.
I was a charter member of New Carrollton Bible Church, Lanham Md. and a member of Oakes Memorial Baptist Church, Dry Fork, Va. Also a published author. Retiree of Bell Atlantic Telephone Company of Maryland. A member of Telephone Pioneers of America.
This I wish to leave with my family and friends, CELEBRATE MY LIFE WITH LOVE. NOT MY DEATH WITH SORROW.

John Hazelwood
DANVILLE, Va. - John Archer Hazelwood, 57, of 118 Clement Avenue, died Sunday afternoon, February 25, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born December 31, 1943 in Danville, he was the son of WIlliam Henry Hazelwood, who predeceased him, and Vera Hanks Hazelwood, who survives.
He worked for Norfolk Southern Railway as an engineer until his retirement. He was a staff sargent in the U.S. Army, having served during the Viet Nam War.
Survivors include three daughters, Karen M. Hazelwood of Blairs, Kristi H. Wedley of Charlotte, N.C., Kelly H. Gravely of Danville; one nephew, Ryan Payton Walker of Danville; one granddaughter, Megan Wedley of Charlotte, N.C.; two brothers, Gary E. Hazelwood of Eden, N.C.; Charles Hazelwood of Blairs and two sisters Roslyn Bedford of Merridian, Miss. and Donnivee H. Sparks of Danville.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. graveside at Highland Burial Park. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park. Graveside military honors will be performed by American Legion Post 325 Honor Guard.

Timmy Holbrook
DRY FORK, Va. - Timothy Ray Holbrook, 26, of 4888 Whitmell School Road, Dry Fork, died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center after being involved in an automobile accident.
Born May 19, 1974 in Danville, he was the son of James Oliver Holbrook, Sr. and Patrica Wilford Holbrook who survive.
He was married
to Carrie Long Holbrook of the residence, who survives. Mr. Holbrook lived most of his life in Pelham, N.C. For the past three years he had resided in Pittsylvania County. He was employed with Holbrook Tree Experts as a tree trimmer. Mr. Holbrook was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Carrie Long Holbrook of the residence; his parents, James Oliver Holbrook, Sr. and Patrica Wilford Holbrook, both of Pelham, N.C.; one brother, James Oliver Holbrook, Jr. of Dry Fork and three nephews, Joshua Wayne Holbrook, Matthew James Holbrook and Dwayne Hatcher Holbrook, all of Pelham, N.C.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. David Hatcher officiating. Interment
will follow at Holbrook Family cemetery.

DANVILLE, Va. - Louis “Slim” Hughes, 66, of 248 Epps Street, Danville, died Friday Feb. 23, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 31, 1933 in Yanceyville, N.C., he was the son of Carl Hughes and Helen Powell Hughes.
He was married
to Dorothy Hughes, who survives. He worked as a plumber before his retirement.
Survivors include, in addition to his wife, three sons, Carl Hughes of Richmond, Johnny Hughes and James A. Hughes, both of Danville and two daughters, Josephine Davis and Ivy Hughes, both of Danville.
The funeral will be held 12 p.m. Wednesday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel.

Hallie Lacks
CLOVER, Va. - Hallie “Sis” Jane Wade Lacks, 79, of 1066 Collins Lane, Clover, died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born April 30, 1921, she was the daughter of Ernest Wade and Nannie Lacks Wade.
She was married
to Edward S. Lacks, who predeceased her. She was a member of Church of God of Prophecy. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include one daughter, Mollie Powell of Clover; one son, Steve Lacks of Clover; two sisters, Jerry Bailey and Louise Jackson, both of Keysville; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by one son, Carl Lacks; three brothers, Pete Wade, E.W. Wade, Abner Lee Wade; three sisters, Ola McKinney, Pauline Tate, Mamie Duffey and one great-grandson.
The funeral will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday at Church of God of Prophecy with the Revs. Courtney W. Coffer, Samuel Jones and Tom Warren officiating. Interment
will take place at Red Level Church of God cemetery.

Jearl Pannill
GRETNA, Va. - Jearl Winchester Pannill, 73, of 12140 Rockford School Road, Gretna, died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001 at the residence.
Born May 24, 1927 in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of James Pannill and Gertrude Wooding Pannill.
He was married
to Eva Pannill, who survives. He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II and also served in the Korean Conflict. He worked for Ross Labratories in Altavista until his retirement and was also a self-employed contractor. He was a member of Piney Grove Missionary Baptist Church where he served as an honorary deacon.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include one daughter, Jeanette Dawkins of Evington; two brothers, Warren Pannill of Norfolk, Edward Pannill of Hurt; three sisters, Naomi Pringle of West Hill, N.Y., Sybil Hutcherson of Woodstown, N.J., Florence Hamilton of Cleveland, Ohio and two grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by two brothers, James and Sim Pannill and three sisters, Hettie Wilson, Vivian Cook and Elizabeth Berger.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at Piney Grove Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Issac Monroe officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery with military honors being performed by V.R.W. Post #4165 and D.A.V. Chapter #46 of Altavista.

Dennis Rusnak
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Dennis Rusnak, 59, of the 100 block of Hillock Crossing, Virginia Beach, died Friday, Feb. 23, 2001 at a Richmond hospital.
Born in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, he was married
to Regina Rusnak of Greensboro, N.C., who survives. He was a veteran of the United States Navy.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include one daughter, Tricia R. Daffron of Currituck, N.C.; two sons, Mark A. Rusnak and Bryan D. Rusnak, both of Virginia Beach; one sister, Louise Eging of Lakewood, Ohio; one brother, Jerry Rusnak of Margate, Fla. and five grandchildren.
The memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home Lynnhaven Chapel, 3600 Virginia Beach Boulevard, Virginia Beach with the Rev. Tim Roberts officiating.

George Clark
JAVA, Va. - Mr. George Edd “Bennie” Clark age 92, of 269 Oriole Lane, Java, Va. died Sunday morning (2-25-01) at his residence. Born March 26, 1908 in Pittsylvania County. He was a son of the late Willie Clark and Mattie Haley Clark. He was married
to the late Dernice Clark. He was a retired farmer, a member of the Mt. Airy Baptist Church where he served on the board of trustees. He was a member of the true friends of charity. A past superintendent of Sunday School of the Riceville Baptist Church and past treasurer of the Sr. Choir at the Mt. Airy Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Barbara Clark; four brothers: William Clark, Bolden Clark, Posey Clark and Beverly Clark; three sisters: Nannie Pringle, Lillie Campbell, Katherine Dabney, Rebecca Miller, Rosa Clark, and Girlie Powell and a special brother, Joseph Clark.
He is survived by five daughters: Mary Ellen Williams and husband Bernard of Temple Hill, Maryland, Joann Thompson and husband Randolph of Java, Va., Mattie Frances Terry and husband Sidney of Fort Washington, MD., Jannie Davis and Caroline Clark both of Java, Va.; one brother Richard Clark of Golsboro, N.C.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three sister-in-laws: Mrs. Cora Clark of Gretna, VA., Mrs. Frances Clark of Phia., PA. and Mrs. Sarah Poindexter of Nathalie, VA. and a host of nieces and nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 1:00 p.m. from the Mt. Airy Baptist Church by Rev. Robert P. King with interment in the church cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Gretna is in charge of arrangements.
