SUTHERLIN, Va. - Martha Ann Strader Haynes, 59, of 1524 White Ridge Road, Sutherlin, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001 at the residence.
Born Sept. 27, 1941 in Danville, she was the daughter of Stephen Strader and Viola Edwards Strader.
She was married
to Claude Allen Haynes Sr., who survives. She lived most of her life in Sutherlin where she was a homemaker and of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include, in addition to her husband of the residence, two sons, Stephen Haynes and Claude Allen Haynes Jr., both of Sutherlin; two daughters, Lisa Carter and Teresa Haynes, both of Sutherlin; three brothers, Mike Strader of Roanoke, Wayne Strader of Spindale N.C., Oscar Strader of Ringgold; two sisters, Gaynelle Murray of Cliffside N.C.,and Mary Hunnicutt of Ringgold; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Brian Edwards officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Kentuck Volunteer Fire Department, 425 Bennett Drive, Ringgold, VA 24586 or the Laurel Grove Volunteer Fire Department, Sutherlin, VA 24594.

Alice McDaniel
DANVILLE, Va. - Alice Lucille Smith McDaniel, formerly of 124 Clarkson St., died Wednesday, March 7, 2001, at Alamance Regional Medical Center in Burlington, N.C.
Born May 19, 1924, she was the daughter of Willie Smith and Anna Lou Smith.
She was married
to Raymond Harris McDaniel Sr. She lived most of her life in Danville and worked at Dan River Mills until her retirement. She was a member of the Christian Heritage Church.
Survivors include four sons, Raymond H. McDaniel Jr. of Danville, David W. McDaniel of Pelham, N.C., Bobby L. McDaniel of Danville, James T. "Tommy" McDaniel of Danville; one daughter, Betty M. Mcgregor of Graham, N.C.; three sisters, Margaret Smith of Newport News, Va., Mary Lou Greer of Newport News, Va., Shirley Burris, of Newport News, Va.; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond H. McDaniel Jr.; one son, Charles McDaniel; two brothers, John Smith, Al Smith; two sisters, Mattie Hall and Marie Parker.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Christian Heritage Church with the Rev. Rick Tate officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at 7-8:30 p.m. at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel on Friday, and at other times at the residence of Bobby McDaniel, 991 Mount Cross Road.
Ray Smith
DANVILLE, Va. - Ray Vincent Smith, 71, of 722 Hughes Street, died Monday, March 5, 2001 at the residence after a decline in health since August.
Born April 26, 1929, he was the son of Claude Swanson Smith and Flora Peters Smith.
He was married
to Betty McBride, who survives. He lived most of his life in Danville and worked for Dan River Inc. before his retirement. He attended Community Baptist Church.
Survivors include, in addition to his wife of the residence, two sons, Barry L. Smith of Danville, Stephen R. "Steve" Smith of Chatham; two sisters, Irene S. Bailey of Danville, Christine S. Strong of St. Petersburg, Fla. and three half-sisters, Lucille Mannon of Floyd, Eva Mae Pillars of Radford and Virginia Adams of Colora, Md.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home with the Rev. James Albert officiating. Interment
will follow at Schoolfield cemetery.
The recived friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Delphine Wyatt
DANVILLE, Va. - Delphine Olson Wyatt, 83, of 509 Sandy Creek Road, Danville, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001 at Roman Eagle Nursing Home after one year of declining health.
Born Sept. 2, 1917 in Henning, Minn., she was the daughter of Enok Olson and Betty Myklebust.
She was married
to Leslie M. Wyatt Sr., who predeceased her in 1993. Mrs. Wyatt moved to the Dry Fork Community in 1946 where prior to her retirement she was employed with the City of Danville Parks and Recreation Department at Stonewall Special Population Center as activities director. Mrs. Wyatt was of the baptist faith.
Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Leslie M. "Bug" Wyatt Jr. and Joan H. Wyatt of Wilmington, N.C., Mike Wyatt and Avery S. Wyatt of Danville, Louie Wyatt and Nancy H. Wyatt of Danville; one daughter and son-in-law, Lavada "Kit" W. Dishman and Wayne J. Dishman of Danville; ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Wyatt was the last surviving member of her generation.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, March 8, 2001 at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home with the Rev. Lee Von Eime officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Linda Ayers
DANVILLE, Va. - Linda Faye Solomon Ayers, 35, of 777 Holland Road, Danville, died Monday, March 5, 2001 at the residence.
Born in Catawba County, N.C., she was the daughter of Hilda Faye Tuck Boger and Ernest Edward "Ed" Solomon, who survives.
She was married
to Jimmy R. Ayers Sr., who survives.
Survivors, in addition to her husband and father, include two sons, Douglas Fricker and Ricky Payne Jr., both of Danville; four step-children, Elizabeth A. Shields of Ringgold, Rebecca A. Hassell of Milton, Loretta A. Marshall of Stokesdale, Jimmy R. Ayers Jr. of Milton; one brother, Gene Michael Solomon of Roxboro and seven grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at the Holbrook Family cemetery with the Rev. Calvin Hines officiating. The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Brooks and White Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Laverene Bethel
DANVILLE, Va. - Laverene Mabin Bethel, 58, of 146 Smith Street, Danville, died Thursday, March 8, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 21, 1943 in Danville, she was the daughter of Willard Mabin and Sallie Garrett Mabin, who survives.
She was an employee of the A.R.A. Food Services at Danville Regional Medical Center for more than 30 years.
Survivors, in addition to her mother, include two daughters, Katrinia Bryant of Danville, Nils Chandler of Haphzibah, Ga.; two sons, Kowlin Bethel Jr. of Danville, Ernest Bethel of Durham, N.C. and two sisters, Margaret Smith of Hephzibah, Ga. and Florene Jeffries of the Bronx, N.Y.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at the Shiloh Baptist Church, Betts Street, Danville, with the Rev. Cecil Bridgeforth officiating. Interment
will follow at the Floral Hills Memory Garden cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

George Breznay
DANVILLE, Va. - George Andrew Breznay, 78, of 103 Knollwood Terrace, died March 7, 2001, at Danville, Regional Medical Center.
Born, July 16, 1922, he was the son of George Breznay and Mary Petrasek Breznay.
He was married
to Scholastica Stefaniake Breznay on Sept. 5, 1923. He lived in Mountain Top, Pa., prior to moving to Danville to live for the last six years. He retired from Champion International in Pittson, Pa., where he worked as a warehouse supervisor. After his retirement he worked with the Luzerne County Department of Ageing. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a member of the American Legion Post 325. He served in the United States Navy during World War II.
Survivors in addition to his wife include, two daughters, Ann Marie Breznay, wife of Paul A. Mogren, of Salt Lake City, Utah, Judith A Breznay, wife of L. Wayne Yeatts, of Danville,; two sisters, Mary B. Burick, of Mountain Top, Pa., Anna B. Yanulus, of Mountain Top, Pa.; one grandchild; three step-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Andrew Breznay, Thomas Breznay and one sister, Agnes Breznay.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with Military Honors by American Legion Post No. 325, with the Rev. Father Matthias Newell officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel, and at other times at the residence 103 Knollwood Terrace, Danville.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the American Heart Association, Danville Division, 4504 Starkey Road, Roanoke, Va., or to the Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, Va., 24541.
Major Brown Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Major Lee Brown Jr., 60, of 110 Cherokee Court, Apt. H-2, Danville, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001 at the residence.
Born Nov. 26, 1940 in Lynch, Ky., he was the son of Major L. Brown Sr. and Leona Myrick Brown.
He was married
to Opal Brown of Freeport, N.Y., who survives. He worked for the City of Hempstead, N.Y. before his retirement.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include four sisters, Jeanette Thompson, Viola Brown, Geraldine Kirkland and Annie Petersen, all of Danville and two brothers, Richard Brown and Larry Brown, both of Uniondale, N.Y.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Everett Dickerson officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Jeanette Thompson, 607 Fairhaven Circle, Danville.

Kenneth ‘Chris’ Christensen
DANVILLE, Va. - Kenneth O. "Chris" Christensen, 85, died Saturday, March 10, 2001 at Riverside Healthcare Center.
Mr. Christensen was born on November 7, 1915 in Flaxville, Montana the son of Alma H. and Halvor A. Christensen.
He was married
on February 16, 1946 to Margaret "Peggy" Langston Cawley Christensen who predeceased him on July 16, 1999 they had been married
for 54 years.
Mr. Christensen was a farmer in South-Flaxville, Mt. where he and his wife farmed until retiring to Danville in the late 1980's.
Mr. Christensen served in two C.C.C. (Civilian Conservation Corps) camps in Montana - one in 1934 for twelve months and another in 1937 for nine months. He served in the United States Army Medical Corp from 1943 to 1946 with service in England, France, Belgium, and Germany. He was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service. Mr. Christensen was a Mason and was active in both the York Rite and Scottish Rite of the Shrine Clubs in Montana and Danville. He was a member of the American Legion. Mr. Christensen had maintained his membership in the Flaxville Zion Lutheran Church and has been active in Danville at First Baptist Church and Christ Episcopal Church.
He is survived by three brothers, Edward Christensen of Minnesota; Leon Christensen and his wife Evelyn of Montana; Allen Christensen and his wife Dorothy of Washington; one sister, Myrth C. Miller of Indiana; two nephews, F. Seward Anderson and Shaun C. Anderson both of Danville and many other nieces, nephews as well as grand nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents and wife he was predeceased by three brothers, Harold, George and Mentor Christensen.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 12, 2001, 2:00 P.M. at Christ Episcopal Church. The Reverend Cleon Ross will be conducting the services. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends Sunday, March 11, 2001, 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. at Townes Funeral Home.
Irma Culver
TAMPA, Fla. - Irma Slayton Culver, 76, of 808 East Richmere Street, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at Delta Health Care in Florida.
Born Oct. 25, 1924, she was the daughter of Otis Dillard Slayton and Annie Lou Roberts Slayton.
She was married
to Donald Culver who predeceases her. She lived most of her life in Tampa where she worked as a customer service representative in the grocery business. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two daughters, Sandra White of Tampa, Fla., Candace Carriera of Tampa, Fla.; two sisters, Joyce Camp of Huntsville, Ala.; Linda Walker, of Danville, Va.; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by two sons, Randy W. Culver and Donald G. Culver.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, at Highland Burial Park with Mr. Lester Tate officiating.
Wrenn-Yeatts North Main will be in charge of arrangements.
