GRETNA, Va. - Richard Odell Clements, 63, of 115 Northside Drive, Gretna, died Thursday March 8, 2001, at his residence.
Born in Pittsylvania County, July 3, 1937, he was the son of Alberkley and Della Kate Hubbard Clements. He was self-employed as a logger and was a member of the Elba Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors in addition to his wife include, two sons, Marvin Clements of Hurt, Va., Byron Clements of Gretna; three daughters, Jennifer Clements of Northern Va., Gale Oakes of Hurt, Va., Leslie Hughes of Roanoke, Va.; two step-sons, Christopher Hughes of Rocky Mount, Va., Carl Hughes of Roanoke, Va.; two step-daughters, Veronica Thomas of Hurt, Va., Caretha Hughes of Rocky Mount, Va.; three brothers, Haywood Clements of Grena, Va., Alfonso Clements and Ted Clements, both of Maryland; one sister, Linda Clements of Forest Hill, Md.,; five grandchildren and fourteen step-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one son, Ray Clements and one brother Silas Clements.
A funeral will be held 12 p.m. Monday at the chapel of Miller Funeral Home with the Rev. B. I. Baize officiating. Interment
will follow at the Elba cemetery.
The family will receive friends at 11 a.m. until the time of the funeral.

Martha Dallas
DANVILLE, Va. - Martha Moore Dallas, 88, formerly of 231 South Ridge Street, (Heritage Towers) died March 9, 2001, at Stratford Health Care Center.
Born August 19,1912, she was the daughter of James S. Moore and Fannie Moore Denton.
She was married
to Vernice C. Dallas. She lived her life in the Danville area where prior to her retirement she was employed with Kmart. She was a member of Mosley Memorial United Methodist Church
She was predeceased in death by one half brother, Jack Denton.
A graveside service will be held 4 p.m. Sunday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Gary Milstead officiating.
The family will receive friends 4-5 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel.
Ruby Dalton
SANDY LEVEL, Va. - Ruby Perdue Dalton, 74, of 670 Dr. Mease Drive, Sandy Level, died Saturday, March 10, 2001 after 15 months of declining health due to cancer and lung disease.
Born May 30, 1926 in Franklin County, she was the daughter of Harvey Lee Perdue and Ella Ames Perdue.
She was married
to Clarence Dalton, who predeceased her. She was of the Baptist faith and was a homemaker.
Survivors include two sons, Gerald Dalton of Rocky Mount, Michael Dalton of Sandy Level; three daughters, Marilyn Shelton of Hurt, Robin Surber of Sandy Level, Sherri Towler of Hurt; one brother, Cecil Perdue of Glade Hill; three sisters, Janie Shoemaker of Sandy Level, Runnell Hedrick of Sandy Level, Dorothy Davis of Rocky Mount; nine grandchildren; three step-grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by five brothers, Bobby, J.T., Harold, Junior and Albert Perdue.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at the Colbert-Moran Funeral Home with the Revs. R.G. Rowland and Brady Willis officiating. Interment
will follow at the Perdue Family cemetery, Union Hall.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
The family suggests memorials may be made to the Cool Branch Rescue Squad or the American Cancer Society.

Sam Farthing Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Sam Neal Farthing Sr., 74, of 412 Lakeside Drive, Danville, died suddenly Thursday, March 8, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center after a four day stay in the hospital.
Born Sept. 8, 1926 in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of William Edward Farthing and Luzetta Davis Farthing.
He was married
to Frances Dalton Farthing, who survives, on October 1, 1949. Mr. Farthing had lived all of his life in Pittsylvania County. He had retired from the former Disston Corporation with 28 years of service where he was a punch press operator. He was a member of the Afton Road Primitive Baptist Church and a member of the American Legion Post 325. He served with the U.S. Navy during W.W.II.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include daughter and son in law, Brenda F. Oakes and Ted Oaks of Danville; son and daughter in law Sam N. Farthing Jr. and Patsy Farthing of Danville; brother Herman L. Farthing of Danville; two sisters, Lois F. Emerson and Katherine F. Turner, both of Danville; two grandsons, James Glen Chesson II and Kevin Wayne Snead, both of Danville; granddaughter, Sherri Nicole Riley of Texas and great grandchild, Brandon Micheal Riley of Texas.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday from Afton Road Primitive Baptist Church by Elder Danny Parker. Interment
will follow in Highland Burial Park with Military Honors by American Legion Post 325.

Fleming Fitzgerald
DANVILLE, Va. - Fleming Swann Fitzgerald, 80, of 420 Sandy River Drive, Danville, died Thursday, March 8, 2001 in Danville Regional Medical Center after six years of declining health.
Born Oct. 23, 1920 in Pelham, N.C., he was the son of Benjamin Reese Fitzgerald and Elizabeth Swann Fitzgerald.
He was married
to Margaret Alverson Fitzgerald, who survives, on July 4, 1941. Mr. Fitzgerald had lived most of his life in the Danville area. He had retired from the Leggett & Myers Tobacco Company in 1984 as manager of the Danville plant after 35 years of service. He was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church. Mr. Fitzgerald was a devoted husband and loving father. He served with the U.S. Air force during W.W.II.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include one daughter, Carolyn F. Whitlock of Danville, Va.; one son, F. Swann Fitzgerald II of Battleboro, N.C.; one brother, James O. Fitzgerald of Pelham, N.C.; two sisters, Kathryn F. Triplett of Danville, Nancy F. Turner of Pelham, N.C.; two granddaughters, Wendy W. Gilbert of Ringgold, Va., Lisa Fitzgerald of Rocky Mount, N.C.; one grandson, Brian Whitlock of Lynchburg, Va. and one great grandson, Ryan Gilbert of Ringgold, Va.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by two brothers, Henry Fitzgerald and Ben Fitzgerald and two sisters, Stella Carter and Mary Baise.
The funeral will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 11th from the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Reverend O.H. Burton and Reverend Dr. Tom Evans. Interment
will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Herman "Red" Kelly
CHATHAM, Va. - Herman "Red" Kelly age 67, of 357 Beverly Heights Road, Chatham, VA, died Friday morning, March 9, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center. Born August 12, 1933 in Pittsylvania County. He was the son of the late John Kelly and Ella Miller Kelly. He was married
to Vernell Womack Kelly who survives. He was self-employed prior to retirement and a member of the Glorious Church of Jesus Christ where he served as an Associate Minister.
He was preceded by: Two children, Melvin Dennis Kelly and "Baby Sister" Kelly, Three brothers, Johnnie Pearl Kelly, Jimmie Kelly and Leroy Kelly; Two sisters, Juanita Frances Kelly and Dorothy K. Brown.
In addition to a loving and devoted wife, Mrs. Vernell W. Kelly of the residence, he is survived by : Six daughters, Romona K. Holmes and Husband James of Phila., PA, Millicent K. Whitehead and Husband Jimmy Lee of Chatham, VA, Valerie K. Hairston of Danville, VA, Rosamary K. Darby and Husband Vendale of Lynchburg, VA, Joarnell K. Jefferys and Husband Bernard, Jr. of Danville, VA and named daughter Bethora "Libby" Pounds of Providence, NC.; Three sons, Purcell Kelly and Wife Joann of Java, VA, Kerman C. Kelly of Petersburg, VA and named son Michael W. White of Chatham, VA. Four sisters, Mrs. Lella Younger and Husband William and Mrs. Alberta Hairston and Husband James of Blairs, VA, Mrs. Mary Lizzie Bennett and Mrs. Almeda Griffin of Danville, VA. Nineteen grandchildren, One great-grandchild; De'Anis Janell Adams daughter of Dennis Eugene Adams, Jr. and Kellta Hairston Adams of Danville, VA. Five additional sisters-in-law, Two brothers-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives. He also leaves a very devoted friend Mr. Benton "Red" Giles of Chatham, VA.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, March 11, 2001 at 3:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Miller Funeral Home by Elder Stedman Payne with Interment
to follow in the Mt. Airy Baptist Church cemetery. A viewing was held on Saturday evening from 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Miller Funeral Home. The family is at the residence. Miller Funeral Home, Gretna, is in charge of the arrangements.

Virginia McCubbins
DANVILLE, Va. - Virginia Davis McCubbins, 78, of 1111 Main Street (Stratford House) died Friday morning, March 9, 2001, at the Stratford Healthcare Center.
Born Aug. 31, 1992, in Danville, she was the daughter of William L. Davis and Velna Newman Davis.
Marriage to C.T. McCubbins Jr. who predeceased her on Aug. 7, 1989. She was a graduate of G.W. High School and attended Longwood and Averett College. She was a member of the Echos Group.
Survivors include one son, C. Thomas McCubbins III, of Richmond, Va.; one sister, Betty Jane Skinnel of Danville; one brother William L. Davis of Garden City, S.C. and four grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one sister, Mary Ann Arlene Davis.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Dr. David Palmer officiating.
The family will receive friends, 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Townes Funeral Home.

Alice McDaniel
DANVILLE, Va. - Alice Lucille Smith McDaniel, formerly of 124 Clarkson St., died Wednesday, March 7, 2001, at Alamance Regional Medical Center in Burlington, N.C.
Born May 19, 1924, she was the daughter of Willie Smith and Anna Lou Smith.
She was married
to Raymond Harris McDaniel Sr. She lived most of her life in Danville and worked at Dan River Mills until her retirement. She was a member of the Christian Heritage Church.
Survivors include four sons, Raymond H. McDaniel Jr. of Danville, David W. McDaniel of Pelham, N.C., Bobby L. McDaniel of Danville, James T. "Tommy" McDaniel of Danville; one daughter, Betty M. McGregor of Graham, N.C.; three sisters, Margaret Smith of Newport News, Va., Mary Lou Greer of Newport News, Va., Shirley Burris, of Newport News, Va.; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four step grandchildren and six step great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond H. McDaniel Sr.; one son, Charles McDaniel; two brothers, John Smith, Al Smith; two sisters, Mattie Hall and Marie Parker.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Christian Heritage Church with the Rev. Rick Tate officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Eva McDaniel
MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Eva Keatts McDaniel, 85, formerly of Route 1, Cascade, died Monday, March 12, 2001 at Blue Ridge Rehabilitation Center, Martinsville.
Born March 10, 1916 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of David Thomas Keatts and Callie Moorefield Keatts.
She was married
to Irvin McDaniel, who predeceased her July 24, 1980. She lived most of her life in the Cascade community and was of the Baptist Faith. She had been a patient at Blue Ridge Rehabilitation Center since Feb. 1995.
Survivors include three daughters, Elna Hubbard of Danville, Inez Freeman of Martinsville, Myrna McDaniel of Chesapeake; two sisters, Ruth Woodson of Ruffin, N.C., Nancy Owen of Danville; two brothers, Elmer Keatts and Lewis Keatts, both of Rocky Mount; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by two sons, Ronald I. McDaniel, Russell O. McDaniel; three sisters, Cynthia Hill, Matilda Brummett, Annie Brooks and four brothers, David Keatts, Landon Keatts, Clay Keatts and Charlie Keatts.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Kermit Law officiating. Interment
will follow at McDaniel Family cemetery, West Fork Road, Pittsylvania County.

Frances Morris
PALM BAY, Fla. - Frances Agnes Morris, 72, of 281 Brandt Avenue, Palm Bay, died Wednesday, March 7, 2001 at the Huntington Nursing Home in Daytona Beach from complications of Alzheimer’s disease.
Born in Danville, Va., she was moved to central Florida from Charlotte, N.C., in 1996 and worked as a bookkeeper for McLean Pediatrics in Charlotte, N.C., until her retirement. She was of the Methodist faith and attended Hickory Grove Methodist Church in Charlotte, N.C. She was an amateur potter and ceramics maker and was a member of the Eastern Star in Danville, Va.
Survivors include two sons, Charles and Steven of Palm Bay; one sister, Martha Ferrell of Sun City Center, Fla. and one granddaughter.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer Resource Center, 10770 North 46th Street, No. A1200, Tampa, FL 33617.
