Irvin Merricks
CALLANDS, Va. - Irvin Thomas “Jack” Merricks age 80 of 16120 Callands Road, Callands, Virginia, died Sunday March 18, 2001 at his residence. Mr. Merricks was born October 26, 1920 in Pittsylvania County. He was the son of the late Will Thomas Merricks and Bessie Wright Merricks.
He is survived by his wife Macie Haskins Merricks of 58 years. He is also survived by two daughters, Phyllis M. Garrett and her husband Claiborne of Dry Fork and Janet M. McDowell and her husband Jerry of Providence, NC; two sons, Dwight Merricks and his wife Alice of Callands and Jimmy Merricks and his wife Willa of Callands; one brother Walter “Dude” Merricks of Dry Fork; three sisters, Ava M. Willis of Dry Fork, Marie M. Woods of Chatham, and Paulene M. Wodall of Axton; eleven grandchildren, Thomas Merricks, Eddie Rigney, Debra Turner, David Garrett, Debbie Riddle, Serena Rigsby, Karren Terry, Beverly Hedrick, Brad Barber, Lee Mahan, and Chuck McKee; sixteen great grandchildren and numerous God children of the Grady community.
He was predeceased by two brothers and two sisters, Odie Merricks, Wallace Merricks, Helen Merricks and Ella M. Coward. He was also predeceased by two brothers in law, Percy Willis and Otha Wood. He was a member of County Line Christian Church.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday March 20, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. from the County Line Christian Church by Michael Hearp, Minister and J.D. Hunt, III, Minister. Interment
will be in the County Line Christian Church cemetery in Henry County, VA. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. March 19, 2001 at the Couty Line Christian Church and at other times will be at the residence. The family suggest in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to the Callands Vol. Fire Department.

Richard Merricks
DANVILLE, Va. - Richard "Dick" Merricks, 82, of 297 Golf Club Road, Danville, died Friday, March 16, 2001 at Vencor Hospital in Greensboro, N.C.
Born Jan 21, 1919 in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of George D. Merricks and Pency Simpson Merricks.
He was married
to Grace Williams Merricks, who survives. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the United States Army and worked for Southern Processors, Inc. for many years until his retirement as Office Manager. He was a member of Mount Hermon Baptist Church where he was a Sunday School Teacher and Deacon.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, includes a son, Tommy Merricks of Danville; a brother, Moses Merricks of Danville; two sisters, Ilean M. Wilson of Charlotte, N.C., Rebecca M. Dickerson of Lynchburg and two grandsons.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by one brother, Joe Merricks and one sister, Leonor M. Buettner.
The funeral will take place 11 a.m. Monday at Mount Hermon Baptist Church with the Revs. Don Davidson and Ronnell Owensby officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park with Full Military honors performed by American Legion Post 325.
The family will be receiving friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Mount Hermon Baptist Church and at other times at the residence.
The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to Mount Hermon Fired Department or Mount Hermon Baptist Church.

Annie Miller
MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Annie Garnett Elliott Miller, 57, of 915 Liberty Street, Martinsville, died Thursday, March 15, 2001 at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.
Born Aug. 5, 1943 in Richmond, she was the daughter of Lewis Elliott and Ellen Rowe Elliott.
She was married
to Robert R. Miller, who survives. She was a L.P.N. for several years and attended Oak Hill Academy in Galax and was a nursing graduate from Martinsville School of Nursing.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include three daughters, Audrey R. Daley of Lynch Station, Tanya R. Willis of Reidsville, N.C., Stacey R. Walton of Danville; three step-daughters, Sandra K. Boaz of Martinsville, Rebecca L. Ramsey of Spencer, Lola A. Wells of Martinsville; one son, Bobby S. Rimmer of Greensville, N.C.; one step-son, Robert Ray Miller Jr. of Martinsville; one brother, Lynwood Wayne Elliott of Ohio and 18 grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by one son, Michael Allen Rimmer; one brother, Billy Elliott and one infant sister.
The funeral will be held 12 p.m. Sunday at Community Funeral Service with Charles R. Tomlinson officiating. A private interment will follow.

Charlotte Motley
CHATHAM, Va. - Charlotte Motley, 81, of 1097 Motley Road, Chatham, died Monday, March 19, 2001 at the Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born March 28, 1919 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Leslie B. Motley and Pattie Shelton Motley. She was of the Christian faith.
Survivors include two brothers, Cecil B. Motley of Gretna, Herman D. Motley of Chatham.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by one brother, Duke S. Motley and three sisters, Bernice M. Isaacs, Clarise M. Austin and Shirley Motley.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. James Bullock Jr. officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park in Danville.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Scott Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Mrs. Duke S. Motley, 796 Motley Road, Chatham.

Gloria Owens
RINGGOLD, Va. - Gloria Helen Gammon Owens, 76, of 3196 Ringgold Depot Road, Ringgold, died Friday, March 16, 2001 at the residence after five years of declining health.
Born July 18, 1924 in Danville, she was the daughter of William Raymond Gammon Sr. and Belinda Helen Ingram Gammon.
She was married
Dec. 20, 1941 to Dale Edwin Owens, who predeceased her April 29, 1991. She was a member of Sandy Creek Baptist Church in Ringgold where she served as director of Girls in Action, Sunday School teacher, Bible School teacher, past assistant youth director and belonged to the Ola Lea Womens Circle. She lived in Danville until moving to Ringgold in 1957 and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Navy Wives Club of Portland, Maine during World War II.
Survivors include two sons, Thomas Edwin Owens of Richmond, William Michael Owens Sr. of Ringgold; three daughters, Linda Owens Yeatts of Sutherlin, Cynthia Owens Hewett and Donna Owens Hewett, both of Ringgold; one brother, William Raymond Gammon Jr. of Danville; three sisters, Colleen Gammon Parker of Dry Fork, Jacqueline Gammon Henderson of Danville, Jane Gammon Keesee of Dry Fork; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by one great-granddaughter.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Revs. Phillip Duckett and Ronnie L. Anderson officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Ralph Phillips
DANVILLE, Va. - Ralph Corey Phillips, 85, died Friday, March 16, 2001 at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born Feb. 6, 1916 in Greensboro, N.C., he was the son of William Lysle Phillips and Laura Corey Phillips.
He was married
Dec. 14, 1940 to Mary Ellen Werts Phillips, who survives. He graduated from Purdue University where he was a member of the Purdue Alumni Association. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in World War II and worked for Olin/Matheson Chemical Company where he was Vice President of purchasing and distribution until his retirement in 1981.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, includes three daughters, Cindy Phillips Risser of Columbia, Md., Patricia Kay Phillips of Carrboro, N.C., Deborah Phillips Whittle of Danville and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Steve Williams officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

Margaret Price
ROCKY MOUNT, Va. - Margaret Norton Price, 69, of Rocky Mount, died Friday, March 16, 2001 at a Roanoke hospital.
She was married
to Tom Price, who survives. She was a registered nurse and graduated from Abingdon Memorial Nursing School.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two sons, Steven Price and Stuart Price, both of Rocky Mount.
The memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Flora Funeral Chapel.

Lori Reamey
DANVILLE, Va. - Lori Ann Reamey, 32, of 7120 Mount Cross Road, Danville, died suddenly Thursday, March 15, 2001 at Duke Medical Center after one month in the hospital.
Born Jan. 4, 1969 in Danville, she was the daughter of Edward L. Reamey and Nancy Hawkins Reamey.
She lived all of her life in Danville and graduated from George Washington High School. She worked in the hardware department of Wal-Mart and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one brother, Michael A. Reamey of Cascade and one sister, Linda R. Counts of Dry Fork.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Carl Burger officiating.
The family will be receiving friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and other times at the residence of Linda Counts, 649 Tunstall High School Road.

Oakey Soyars
BACHELORS HALL, Va. - Oakey Watkins Soyars, 93, of 156 Loomfixer Lake Road, died Saturday, March 17, 2001 at the Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
Born Nov. 19, 1907 in Wilkes County, N.C., she was the daughter of Calvin V. Watkins and Lillie Williams Watkins.
She lived most of her life in the Bachelors Hall community of Pittsylvania County and was a member of Vandola Baptist Church. She worked for Triangle Cleaners for 20 years as a seamstress before her retirement and previously worked for Dan River, Inc.
Survivors include two sons, Julian P. "Bugg" Soyars Jr. of the residence, Aubrey L. Soyars of Danville; two sisters, Vallie Nelson of California and Bessie Lillie of Abingdon.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Revs. Dr. Leroy Clack and Rickie Lancaster officiating.
The family will be receiving friends at the residence.

Ed Steffey
NAPLES, Fla. - Eddie B. Steffey, 68, of 106 Bridgewater Court, and also of Naples, Florida, died Sunday March 18, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Steffey was born April 17, 1932 in Covington Va., the son of Raymond A. Steffey and Margaret B. Steffey.
He was married
to Sherry Bradley Steffey, who survives.
Mr. Steffey was a graduate of West Virginia University with a degree in Structural Engineering. He was employed by Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. for many years, and prior to his retirement in 1997 he was the Danville Plant manager. Mr. Steffey was a veteran of the United States Navy. He was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church.
Besides his wife, Mr. Steffey is survived by eight daughters, Allison Holbert and her husband Michael of Chantilly, Va.; Jennifer Hinesley and her husband Tim of Lawrenceville, Ga.; Leslie Faircloth and her husband Cal of Winston-Salem, N.C.; Laura Guigou and her husband Mitchell of Valdese, N.C.; Ramona Hicks and her husband John of Burmingham, Al.; Regina Carson and her husband David of Roanoke, Va.; Sherry Ann Pullen and her husband Mark of Huntsville, Ala., and Jackie Sessoms and her husband Buck of Quantico, Va.; three sisters, Regina Steffey of Charlottesville, Va.; Esther Ellis of Salem, Va. and Jane Briggs of Charlottesville, Va.; and fourteen grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, March 20, 2001 at 11:00 A.M. at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church. Rev. Jonathon Bennett will conduct the services.
The family will receive friends on Monday, March 19, 2001, from 6:30 to 8:00 P.M. at Townes Funeral Home. Other times the family will be at the residence at 106 Bridgewater Court.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial donations be made to Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, North Naples United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society.
