DANVILLE, Va. - William McArthur "Mack" Pleasant, 58, of 507 Elizabeth St. Ext., died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002, at his residence, following a lengthy illness.
The funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Carolyn 'Sallie' Lee Ridgeway
DANVILLE, Va. - Miss Carolyn "Sallie" Lee Ridgeway, age 55 of 121 Naples Street died Thursday, October 31, 2002 at her residence. She had been ill for the past two months.
She was born in Danville, February 4, 1947, a daughter of the late Walker Richard Ridgeway and Effie Finney Ridgeway.
"Sallie" was a member of the Westover Hills Christian Church. She also attended in the past The Hatcher Center. She attended The Christian Training for the Retarded Sunday School at Saint Luke's United Methodist Church every Saturday with great enjoyment.
Surviving are her aunt: Mrs. Lois Finney Shelhorse of the home. A number of cousins, Darrell and Sandra Finney of Danville, David and Cynthia Finney of Collinsville, Ruth Wade of Martinsville, Billy Perrow of Appomattox, VA and Bob Finney of Martinsville.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 2, 2002 at 4 p.m. from the Danville Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel by The Reverend Daryl Joyce. Entombment will follow the services.

Chester Holland Sneed
NATHALIE, Va. - Chester Holland Sneed, 80, of 9135 Chatham Road, died Oct. 30, 2002, at his residence.
Born March 31, 1922, in Halifax County, he was the son of Arthur Manly Sneed and Mattie Belle Culley.
He was a member of Halifax Baptist Church, a deacon, Sunday School director and was also a member of Farm Bureau.
He was married to Dorothy Overby Sneed, who survives.
In addition to his wife of Nathalie, he is survived by two sons, Chester Holland Sneed Jr. of Ringgold and Larry Paige Sneed of South Boston; two daughters, Donna Ferguson of Tampa, Fla. and Jeanne Sneed Medley of Nathalie; three brothers, Arthur Eugene Sneed of Halifax, John Sneed of South Boston and Richard Sneed of Fayetteville, N.C.; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one son, Ronald Timothy Sneed and a granddaughter, Teresa Sneed.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Halifax Baptist Church with the Rev. John Campbell and the Rev. Joseph Willis officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Powell Funeral Home.

Shirley Jean Robertson Sorahan
DURHAM, N.C. - Shirley Jean Robertson Sorahan, age 67, and mother of Rosanna Brumfield of Durham departed from this life on Wednesday, October 30, 2002 to be with our Lord. Shirley was a resident of 500 Cobb Street and shared her home with her beloved pet "Baby."
A native of Pittsylvania County, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Major and Callie Robertson. In addition to Shirley's daughter Rosanna and Skip Wilkinson, she is survived by two granddaughters, Tina Bennett and Scot Brooks and Valerie Kinder and husband, Mike; two sisters, Pearlene Julian and husband, Al of Marysville, Washington and Helen Gordon of Durham; one brother, Ronald Robertson and wife Joanne of Axton, Virginia and several nieces and nephews.
Hudson Funeral Home will handle cremation arrangements. A memorial service will be held Sunday, November 3, 2002 at 3:00 p.m. at Faith Fellowship Church, located at 1323 Watts Street. Rev. Terry Brown will officiate.
The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, 2900 Omah Street.

Edna Beggarly
DANVILLE, Va. - Edna Reaves Wood Beggarly, 84, of 5928 Whitmell School Road, died Thursday, July 18, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home following two years of declining health.
Born Feb. 21, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John Henry Wood and Eva Carter Wood.
She had lived her entire life in Danville and Pittsylvania County and was a homemaker.
She is survived by three daughters, Janie B. Kendrick of Danville, Connie B. Somoza of Marietta, Ga. and Glenda B. Hardison of Gretna; two sons, Ernest W. Beggarly Jr. of Martinsville and Samuel F. Beggarly of Danville; one sister, Frances W. Coward of Crestline, Calif.; one brother, Julian E. Wood of Dry Fork; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two daughters, Ann Jacqueline Beggarly and Sara B. Payne, a sister, Ruth Wood Taylor, and three brothers, Addison Wood, Tommy Wood and Joe Wood.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Danville Memorial Gardens with Mr. John Searcy and Mr. Garland Walker officiating.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times at the residence of her daughter, Janie Kendrick, 111 Robinwood Place in Shadowwood.

Roy Eanes
DANVILLE, Va. - Roy Bernard Eanes, 76, of 177 Starling Ave., died July 18, 2002, at his residence. He had been in declining health for more than two years.
Born July 1, 1926, he was the son of William Abner Eanes and Delma Edwards Eanes Clay.
He was married Nov. 15, 1944 to Elizabeth Ann Barksdale Eanes, who survives. He had lived all of his life in Pittsylvania County and Danville and worked for 41 years in maintenance at Durham Hosiery Mills as a fixer. He was a member of Glenwood Memorial Baptist Church and was a life member of the Improved Order of Red Men, Poquoson Tribe #124.
He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, the Philippine Liberation Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, WWII Victory Medal and the Army Occupation Medal.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include, one son, Michael David Eanes of Danville; and one sister, Beulah Eanes Holley.
He was predeceased by one daughter, Carolyn Ann Eanes and one brother, William Coleman Eanes.
The graveside service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Carl Burger and the Rev. Mac Burgess officiating.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times at the residence, 177 Starling Ave.

William Harris
BLAIRS, Va. - William Nathaniel Harris, 18, of 193 Mac Road, died Friday, July 19, 2002, due to an automobile accident in Pittsylvania County.
Born April 6, 1984, in Norfolk, Va., he was the son of Charles Bruce Harris and Leshia Shay Boothe Adkins, who both survive.
He lived most of his life in Pittsylvania County and was a student at Chatham High School and was attending summer school at Gretna High School. He also attended the Pittsylvania County Vo-Tech School studying Heating and Air-Conditioning. He was a member of the Chatham High School F.F.A. and worked at Motley Dairy. He was of the Lutheran faith.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include one stepmother, Celine Harris of Danville; one sister, Wendy Nicole Harris of Blairs; one stepbrother, Alan DeAndrea of Danville; paternal grandparents, Eugene and Wanda Smith, both of Danville; maternal grandparents, Harry and Nan Boothe, both of Danville; and great-grandmother, Witcher B. Boothe.
The family will receive friends Sunday night from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

SUTHERLIN, Va. - Catherine Howard Milam, 29, of 1944 Laural Grove Road, died Thursday, July 18, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 23, 1973, in Danville, Va., she was the daughter of William Edward Milam and Peggy H. Milam, who both survive.
She attended the First Pentecostal Holiness Church in Danville and Laural Grove Baptist Church in Sutherlin.
Survivors, in addition to her parents, include, one brother, William E. "Billy" Milam Jr. of Sutherlin; five sisters, Myra Ann Milam and Margaret Milam Sexton, both of Sutherlin, Elizabeth Milam Beggarly of South Boston, Shirley Jo Milam Hite of Ringgold and Ann Marie Milam Thackston of Halifax.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, at Milam Family Cemetery in Sutherlin with the Rev. Bill Owsley, Rev. Kenneth Benson and Rev. James Ward officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Annie Nelson
VIRGILINA, Va. - Annie Pauline Powell Nelson, 74, of 9620 Carolina Ave. died Friday, July 19, 2002, at her residence.
Born Jan. 28, 1928, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Charlie Powell and Annie Smith Powell.
She was married to William Owen Nelson, who predeceased her. She worked at Russell-Stover Candy Co.
She is survived by five sons, Jimmy Owen Nelson and James Alvin Nelson, both of Virgilina, Emory Chester Nelson and Christopher Henry Nelson, both of Roxboro, N.C., and Richard Willis Nelson of Nelson; two daughters, Mary Nelson Powell and Deborah Ann Dillon, both of Roxboro, N.C.; four sisters, Fannie Childrey of Halifax, Louise Hawkins of South Boston, and Lorene Hatcher and Jeanette Newton, both of Scottsburg; one brother, Edward Powell of Danville; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two step grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Florence Avenue Baptist Church with the Rev. Leslie Puryear officiating. Interment will follow at Virgilina Cemetery.

Mary Newby
DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Surratt Newby, 62, of 426 Oak Forest Circle, formerly of 118 Spring Ave., died Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at Duke Medical Center in Durham, N.C.
Born March 23, 1940, in Danville, Va., she was a daughter of Mosesell Surratt and Violet Booth Surratt Yates, who both predeceased her.
She was married in 1958 to Charles "Pete" Newby, who predeceased her. Mrs. Newby lived all of her life in the Danville area and was a member of Longview Friends Church.
She had worked at Jon Bill Mfg. Co. for five years and was a baby sitter for a number of years before retiring on disability.
She had been a patient at Duke Medical Center for five weeks.
She is survived by one daughter, Diane Newby Newcomb of Danville; one son-in-law, Jimmy Newcomb of Danville; one sister, Ola Mae Cobbs of Danville; two grandsons, Brian Newcomb and Bradley Newcomb; one granddaughter, Melissa Newcomb; and one great-granddaughter, Cayleigh Clayton.
She was predeceased by one son, Charles Ray Newby Jr., and two brothers, Winfred Suratt and Allie Surratt.
The funeral will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Swicegood Chapel with the Rev. Robert Carpenter and the Rev. Roy Taylor. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens officanting.
The family received friends 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Chapel and will receive friends at other times at the residence of her daughter, 426 Oak Forest Circle.

Lottie Newell
SALISBURY, N.C. - Lottie Carter Newell, 85, of 1122 Arbor Drive, died Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at her residence. She had been in declining health for five years.
Born August 9, 1916, in Danville, Va., she was the daughter of Robert O. Carter and Sallie Waddell Carter, who both predeceased her.
Mrs. Newell had lived in Salisbury, N.C. since 1968. She was a homemaker and had worked as a seamstress. She was of the Baptist faith.
She was first married to Dewey Stephens, who is deceased, and later married Sylvester A. Newell, who survives.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include one stepson, James Craig Newell of Robbins, N.C.; one granddaughter, Robin Gloris Stephens of Pineville, N.C.; three sisters, Thelma Atwell and Vera Garabedian, both of Danville, and Empress Dawson of Crestview, Fla. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
She was predeceased by a son, Billy Carter Stephens, a brother, Clarence Carter, and a sister, Lucille Hammond.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, July 20, at Highland Burial Park in Danville, VA with the Reverend Carl Burger officiating.

Charles Smith
CHATHAM, Va. - Charles Wade Smith, 85, of 449 Smith Road, died Friday, July 19, 2002, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Salem.
Born Oct. 7, 1916, in Museville, he was the son of William Irvin Smith and Mary Virgie Pearson Smith.
He was married to Lois Reynolds Smith. He lived all of his life in the Callands Community. Prior to retirement, he was associated with a mens clothing store. He was a veteran of WWII, having served in the Army.
He is survived by one son, Harold L. Smith of Mebane, N.C.; one brother, Douglas Smith of Danville; one sister, Virginia S. LaPrad of Newport News; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Strawberry Church with Elder Thomas Soloman officiating. Interment will follow at Smith Family Cemetery.

COLLINSVILLE, Va. - Henry Lee Terry, 58, of 50 Norwood Drive, died Monday, July 15, 2002, at his residence.
Born Sept. 9, 1943, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Wilson Terry and Lena Anderson Terry.
He was employed at Tultex prior to retirement on disability, and was a member of Riceville Baptist Church.
He is survived by five sisters, Gaile Calloway and Bernice Clark, both of Java, Theresa Terry of Danville, Martha Lewis of South Hill and Shirley Terry of New York.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Elmus and Roy Terry, and two sisters, Lettie Barley and Roxie Ann Butler.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Riceville Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronnie Walker officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
