Irene Raymond
DANVILLE, Va. - Irene Estelle Dunn Samuels Raymond, 79, formerly of 224 Lipton Lane, Danville, died March 20, 2001 at Riverside Health Care Center after declining health since May, 2000.
Born Feb. 13, 1922 in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Irving Strange Dunn and Lida Ann Dixon Dunn.
Mrs. Raymond had resided in Danville all of her adult life. She was a member of First Methodist Temple Church and prior to retirement was a seamstress operating her own business. Mrs. Raymond was first married
to Lamon Attwille Samuels who died April 16, 1969, later marrying Frank B. Raymond who died in September, 1974.
Survivors include one daughter, Joyce Samuels Elliott of Danville; one son-in-law, Hughes Elliott of Danville; one grandson, M.H. Elliott III of Danville; one granddaughter, Kristie E. Trent of Danville; one great-grandson, Allison Elliott of Danville and one great-granddaughter, Emily Trent of Danville.
She was predeceased by one brother, Thomas S. Dunn.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. March 23, 2001 from the graveside in Highland Burial Park with the Rev. W.L. Wade officiating. Interment
will take place at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times at the residence of Joyce S. Elliott, 203 Bell-Aire Drive.

Fannie Rice
DANVILLE, Va. - Mrs. Fannie Harris Jones Rice, age 76, of 509 Elizabeth Street Extension, died Tuesday afternoon March 20, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center after several months of declining health and a nine day stay at the hospital. Mrs. Rice was born in Halifax County on August 3, 1924, a daughter of the late Rev. John C. Harris and Betty Matthews Harris.
She married
Robert Lee Jones, Sr., on August 20, 1943 who died in December, 1981, and then she married
John D. Rice in 1986 who died in January 2001. Mrs. Rice had spent most of her life in Danville where she was a weaver for Dan River, Inc., for nearly 30 years before retiring on disability. She was a member of Central Boulevard Church of God.
Survivors include one son and daughter in law, James T. and Brenda Jones of Danville, and two brothers, Jack Harris of Danville, and Rev. Arthur Harris of Radford, and three sisters, Ella Horne, Mildred Mills, and Dorothy Bernard all of Danville, and two step sons, David R. Rice and James Rice both of Providence, North Carolina, and two step daughters, JoAnn Rice of Greensboro, North Carolina, and Brenda Thompson of Reidsville, North Carolina, and daughter in law, Essie Jones of Danville, and eight Grandchildren and seven Great Grandchildren also survive.
She was predeceased by the following; son, Robert Lee Jones, Jr., six brothers, Monroe Harris, John Robert Harris, Fred Harris, James Harris, Eugene Harris, and Jimmy Harris, and two sisters, Florine Williams and Kate Harris, and one Grandchild and two Great Grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday at Central Boulevard Church of God by the Rev. John H. Meadows and Rev. Billy Hedrick. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens. Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements where the family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 7:00-8:30 p.m., and at other times at the residence.
John Smith
DANVILLE, Va. - John Lenwood Smith, 97, formerly of 655 Holland Road, died Wednesday, March 21, 2001 at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born March 24, 1903 in Leasburg, N.C., he was the son of Jim Smith and Lula Smith.
He was married
to Ora Creasey Smith, who predeceased him. He lived in Danville for the past 30 years and worked in the sawmill business before his retirement.
Survivors include one sister, Mary Rowland of Roxboro, N.C.; one step-son, John Creasey of Gibsonville, N.C.; one step-daughter, Sally Ayers of Danville; six step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren also survive.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Pelham United Methodist Church cemetery with the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating.
The family will be receiving friends at the residence of Sally Ayers, 726 Holland Road.

John Womack
DANVILLE, Va. - John Robert "Smiley" Womack, 86, of 1170 South Boston Road, Danville, died Tuesday, March 20, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health and three days in the hospital.
Born June 10, 1914 in Halifax County, he was the son of Thomas Robert Womack and Mattie Francis Womack.
He was married
Aug. 26, 1942 to Irene Hill Womack, who predeceased him June 25, 2000. Mr. Womack resided in Halifax County and then moved to the Danville area 30 years ago, where prior to his retirement he was employed with Dan River, Inc. and he was a member of Glenwood Memorial Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter and son in law, Betty W. Adkins and Willard Adkins of Dry Fork; one daughter, Nancy C. Womack of the residence; one son, Danny R. Womack of the residence; one grandson, Jeff Adkins of Dry Fork; one sister, Rebecca Troxler of Danville and one brother, Richard Womack of Petersburg.
He was predeceased, in addition to his wife and parents, by one sister, Sarah W. Smith and four brothers, John Henry Womack, George Womack, Thomas Womack and Jimmy Womack.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Steve Lewis officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Vance Slade
YANCEYVILLE, Va. - Vance Daniel Slade, 66, of Brian Center Nursing Home, formerly of 241 Third Avenue, died Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 10, 1934, he was the son of Goldie Phillps Slade and Willie Slade.
He was a member of Yanceyville Missionary Baptist Church, where he was a member of the usher board. He attended Caswell County Training School, and also joined the United States Army, where he served in the Korean Conflict and made rank as a corporal. After returning back to Caswell County, he was employed at M.C. Construction as a construction worker before his retirement.
Survivors include one son, Vance Johnson of Milton, N.C.; two brothers, Huston Slade of Yanceyville, Elbert Slade of Washington, D.C.; two sisters, Golden S. Bell and Sally Slade, both of Yanceyville and four grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Yanceyville Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Arthur Grier II officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Sunday at Fulton Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of his niece, 474 Dillard School Drive, Yanceyville, N.C.

Timothy Snead
DANVILLE, Va. - Timothy Wayne Snead, 27, of 97 Bowe Street, died Thursday, March 22, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 15, 1973, in Martinsville, N.C., he was the son of Charles Ray Snead and Peggy Dillon Jones, who survive.
He was married
to Star Ratcliff Snead, who survives. He spent most of his life in Florida and Danville where he was of the Baptist faith. He was employed by Bassett Walker.
Survivors in addition to his father and mother, and wife, include two daughters, Haley Lynn Snead of Bowling Green, Miss., Katie Shay Donovant of the residence; one son, Bobby Dean Donovant Jr., of the residence; two brothers, Ronald L. Snead, Donald L. Snead, both of Clewiston, Fla.
He was predeceased by one brother, Luther Ray Snead.
A memorial service will be held 4 p.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Leroy Clack officiating. Interment
will be private at a later date.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his grandmother, Doris Moore, at 324 Rockwood Drive in the Brosville Community.

James Whitley
DANVILLE, Va. - James Eldon Whitley, 63, of 125 Arnett Blvd. apartment A5, died Friday, March 23, 2001, at the residence.
Born August 29, 1937, he was the son of Grover Cleveland Whitley Sr., and Lina Horsley Whitley.
He was a member of the Ballard Pruitt Post 647 of the V.F.W. He served in the United States Army from 1954-1957 and the United States Air Force from 1960-1964.
Survivors include two brothers, Ray E. Whitley Sr. of Danville, and Grover Cleveland Whitley Jr. of Danville.
He was predeceased by a sister, Mildred W. Reynolds.
A graveside service will be held 4 p.m. Sunday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Duane Blevins officiating. Military honors by American Legion Post No. 1097.

James Wilson
CASCADE, Va. - James Thomas Wilson, 84, of 3242 Cascade Road, died Friday, March 23, 2001.
He was married
to Roberta Adams Wilson, who survives. He was a native of Pittsylvania County and was a member of Cascade Primitive Baptist Church.
He worked as a textile worker and farmer before his retirement.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include seven sons, James O. Wilson, Sylvester Wilson, both of the residence, Ernest K. Wilson, Charlie T. Wilson, both of Cascade, Otis Wilson of Sparks, Nev., Samuel J. Wilson of Brown Summit, N.C., and Lawrence E. Wilson of Charlottesville; four daughters, Zelma W. Adams of Cascade, Marie W. Hairston, Rozenia W. Toller, both of Danville, Patricia W. Hunte of Atlanta, Ga.; four brothers, Omie Wilson, Robert Wilson, both of Cascade, John Lee Wilson of Eden, N.C., David Wilson of Upper Marlboro, Md; one sister, Nannie Mae Smith of Cascade; 29 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
The funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Cascade Primitive Baptist Church in Cascade. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.

Vesta Wood
ALTON, Va. - Vesta Fouts Wood, 69, of Philpot Road, died March 23, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born December 22, 1931, she was the daughter of Harrison Roscoe Fouts and Clara Mae Nihone Fouts.
She was married
to Hugh Wilborn Whitt, who died Oct. 29, 1979, and Kenneth Ray Wood, who died Oct. 29, 1997. Mrs. Wood had lived most of her life in Pittsylvania and Halifax County. She had retired from C & P Telephone Company where she worked as a repair dispatcher with 32 years of service. After her retirement she worked with Sherwin Williams Paint Company as a Interior Decorator for several years. Mrs. Wood was a member of Calvery United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one son, Douglas Hugh Whitt, of Alton Va.; one daughter-in-law, Kay Tucker Whitt, of Alton, Va.; one brother, Farrell Fouts of Thomasville, N.C.; one grandson Kirk Douglas Whitt.
She was predeceased by one brother and two sisters.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, March 25, 2001, at the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, with the Rev. Stephen T. Vineyard officiating. Interment
will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

Darrell Yeatts
GRETNA, Va. - Darrell Edward Yeatts, age 51, of Gretna, died Saturday, March 24, 2001.
Born February 17, 1950 in Altavista, he was a son of Edna Willis Love of Gretna and the late Charlie Ramsey Yeatts. He was predeceased by a brother, Aubrey Yeatts and his Step-father, Dan Love. Darrell was a funeral director with the Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and when his health allowed an active member of Anderson Memorial United Methodist Church.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by three brothers and sisters-in-law, Alfred Yeatts, Pete and Katie Yeatts, Garnett and Judy Yeatts, Joan S. Yeatts, all of Gretna; a sister and brother-in-law, Jeanette and Richard Wood of Chatham; his wife, Marcia Ramsey of Gretna; a step-son, Otey Crawley, Jr. of Charlotte, NC; two step-daughters, Elizabeth Ellis of Mooresville, NC and Cynthia Voltz of Sanford, NC; 6 Step-grandchildren and 4 Step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Monday, March 26, 2001 at Anderson Memorial United Methodist Church by Rev. Charles Mallory and Rev. Charles Ellis. Burial will follow in Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times at the residence of his mother, Mrs. Edna Love, 508 Leftwich Street, Gretna.

Harry Anderson
DANVILLE, Va. - Harry Lee Anderson, 82, of 39 Holcomb Street, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001 at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born Nov. 28, 1918 in Halifax County, he was the son of Charlie Howard Anderson and Lena Lewis Anderson.
He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving during World War II on the U.S.S. Alabama. He lived in Pittsylvania County, Radford, Mt. Airy, N.C., Daytona Beach, Fla., and Danville. He operated restaurants in Radford, Daytona Beach, Fla., and Mt. Airy, N.C. He was a dietician at St. Albums and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one brother, E. Gilbert Anderson of Providence, N.C. and four sisters, Mildred Boles, Elizabeth Heffinger, Jeanette Brown, all of Danville and Clara Moses of Java.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by five brothers, Otis K. Anderson, Algie Willis Anderson, Howard Anderson, Roy. S. Anderson, Raymond L. Anderson and two sisters, Annie May Redd and Pattie Haskins.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Dr. Charles B. Scearce officiating. Interment
will follow at Mill Creek Baptist Church cemetery in Chatham.
