GRETNA, Va. - Herman Linwood Berger, 53, of 1605 Pittsville Road, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 13, 1948 in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Mary Irvin Berger, who survives, of Lynchburg and Clem Berger.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include two brothers, Clem Berger Jr. of Red Bank, N.J., Frankie Berger of Gretna; two sisters, Easter Wilson of Altavista and Margaret Richerson of Asbury Park, N.J.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Miller Funeral Home chapel with Elder Gary Witcher officiating. Interment
will follow at the Irvin Family cemetery in the Brights community.
The family will be receiving friends 12-1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Elsie Crews
HALIFAX, Va. - Elsie Mann Crews, 62, of 1033 K Fork Loop, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001 at the residence.
Born Sept. 29, 1938 in Clarkton, she was the daughter of Robert Mann and Edna Elder Mann.
She was married
to Giles T. Crews Sr. who predeceased her. She worked at Woodview Nursing Home until her retirement and was a member of South Boston Church of Christ.
Survivors include four sisters, Deborah Montgomery of Clays Mill, Sandra Webber of Pelham, N.C., Robin Butler of Bumpass, Barbara Cooper of Apex, N.C.; one son, Giles T. "Tom" Crews Jr. of Durham, N.C.; four sisters, Louise King of Altavista, Betty Smith of Brookneal, Mattie Maxey of Brookneal, Virginia Hailey of Hurt; one brother, John Mann of Gladys and nine grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by two brothers, Benn Mann and Robert "Slim" Mann.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Childrey Baptist Church with the Rev. Rodney Barwick officiating. Interment
will follow at Childrey Baptist Church cemetery in Nathalie.
The family will be receiving friends at the residence.

Nathan Davis Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Nathan Hensley Davis Sr., 75, of 1677 Afton Road, died Monday, March 26, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center after several weeks of declining health.
Born Oct. 9, 1925 in Keeling, he was the son of James Nathan Davis and Lessie Milam Davis.
He was married
July 6, 1948 to Lillie Mae Hall Davis, who survives. He was a self employed flooring contractor, having owned and operated Davis & Davis Floor covering for many years. He was of the Primitive Baptist Faith.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Joseph W. "Joe" Davis of Danville, Nathan H. "N.H." Davis Jr. of Danville; daughter-in-law, Rosie R. Davis of Danville; son Larry M. Davis of Danville; daughter-in-law, Penny R. Davis of Danville; one grandson, Nathan "Eric" Davis of Danville; three sisters, Margaret H. Henderson of Keeling, Mamie D. Christenbury of Durham, N.C. and Martha D. Satterfield of South Boston.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by three brothers, Thomas W. Davis, Jessie D. Davis, Robert H. Davis and three sisters, Myrtle D. Lewis, Maggie D. Compton and Mildred D. Lewis.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Don Davidson and Elder Danny Parker officiating.
The family will be receiving friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Barker Funeral Home and other times at the residence, 1677 Afton Road.

William DeMott Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - William Mortimer DeMott Sr., 80, of 175 Hamlin Avenue, died Friday, March 30, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center following a sudden illness.
Born Nov. 14, 1920 in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of John Dewey DeMott and Lucy Henderson DeMott.
He was married
to Mamie M. Reese DeMott, who survives. He was the owner and operator of City Restaurant for many years and was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include four sons, William M. "Billy" DeMott Jr. of Ringgold, Ray C. DeMott of Providence, John D. DeMott of Ringgold, Randy P. DeMott of Danville; two daughters, Kitty D. Minter of Danville, Jennifer Dillon of Danville; one sister, Betty Pulley Williams of Danville and nine grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by one sister, Grovene D. Johnson.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Concord United Methodist Church cemetery in Chatham. Interment
will follow.

John Dickerson
NORFOLK, Va. - John William Dickerson, M.D. died Sunday morning, March 18, 2001 at his home. He was born in Princeton, West Virginia on September 22, 1929.
He was the son of the late Dr. William Edwin and Arline Bird Dickerson. He was raised in Danville, Virginia and attended Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, Georgia. In 1950 he graduated from Duke University where he was a member of Chi Phi Fraternity. After a two year tour of duty in the United States Army he went to Virginia Tech for postgraduate studies. He then attended Medical College of Virginia, graduating as an Honor Graduate in 1958. He was a member of Phi Chi Fraternity and Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Fraternity. From there he went on to the State University of Iowa where he did one year of internship and four years of Ophthalmic Residency. Upon completion of his training he went to the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Washington, D.C. for postgraduate work.
In 1963 he moved to Norfolk and set up a practice in general Ophthalmology. The same year he restarted the Lions Eye Clinic at the Children's Hospital of the Kings Daughters. He also ran the Ophthalmic Pathology Lab and was an assistant professor at Eastern Virginia Medical School.
He was a co-founder of The Norfolk Eye Society, a member of the Tidewater Society of Ophthalmology, The Virginia Society of Ophthalmology, American Academy of Ophthalmology, The Norfolk Academy of Medicine, The Medical Society of Virginia, The Southern Medical Association and the American Medical Association.
Over the years he was a member of the Norfolk Host Lions Club, the Consolvo Tent and the Seaside Tent of Circus Saints and Sinners of America, The Norfolk Sports Club and the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club. He was the co-founder of West Side Wine Shop. An avid sportsman, he fished and hunted whenever he could.
He is survived by his wife, Vicki Berry Dickerson, three daughters, Janet Dickerson Richard, Vicki Lee Dickerson, Catherine Kellie Dickerson, one son, James Douglas Dickerson, one granddaughter, Christy Ann Dickerson and two grandsons, Samuel Denison Adsit IV and Jonathan William Dickerson.
The family will be at the home of Dr. John Dickerson, 1007 Manchester Ave., Norfolk, Va. 23508.
Donations may be made to the Lions Club of Norfolk Foundation.

John Dyer
MARTINSVILLE, Va. - John Robert Dyer, 56, of 51 Robin Road, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at the Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
Born Aug. 29, 1944, in New York, he was a son of Lucille Robertson Dyer and Henry L. Dyer, who survives.
He was married
to Barbara Martin Dyer, who survives. He worked as sales and finance manager at Commonwealth Toyota.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence and father, include one daughter, Jeannette Lolita Dyer of the residence, and two sons, John Robert Dyer Jr. and Jonathan Ross Dyer, both of the residence.
The funeral will be held 12 p.m. Saturday at Bibleway Cathedral with Apostle Lawrence Campbell officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will be receiving friends at the residence.

Willie Fullerwinder
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Willie "Lightning" Fullerwinder, 88, of 220 High Street, died Monday, March 26, 2001, at Magnolia Manor Nursing Home.
A native of Spartanburg, he was the son of Lightning and Mattie Fullerwinder.
He was married
to Rosa Johnson Fullerwinder, who predeceased him. He lived in Danville, Va. for a brief period of time.
Survivors include one son, John A. Fullerwinder of Danville; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; one brother of Spartanburg County and four sisters of Spartanburg County.
The funeral will be held Saturday in Spartanburg. Interment
will follow at Spring Hill Memorial Gardens, Chesenee.
The family will be receiving friends in Spartanburg.

Jeffrey Gibson
BRONX, N.Y. - Jeffrey Craig Gibson, 47, of the Bronx, died March 9, 2001 in Manhattan as the result of a sudden heart attack.
Born in Danville, Va., he was the son of Walter and Edna Gibson.
He was married
to Tree O'Donnell, who survives. He worked in post-production for commercials and movies at Manhattan Transfer in Manhattan.
Survivors include one son, Jack of Bronx, N.Y.; one daughter, Rosemary of Bronx, N.Y.; one brother, Garry Gibson of Vero Beach, Fla. and one sister, Laurie Pritchett of Danville, Va.
The burial and eucharist took place 11 a.m. Saturday, March 10, 2001 at St. Bartholomew's Church in the City of New York.
Wilber Gore
DANVILLE, Va. - Austin Wilber Gore, 81, died Thursday, March 29, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 6, 1919 in McCall, S.C., he was the son of John Toler Gore and Mattie Lee Gore.
He was married
to Marian S. Gore, who survives. He worked for Dan River Mills and the City of Danville. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in World War II in the Southwest Pacific where he was a prisoner of war.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of Danville, include four daughters, Sharon G. Jones, Carol G. Bowen, Wendy J. Gore, all of Danville, Frances A. Gore of Pelham, N.C.; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The graveside service will be held 4 p.m. Saturday at Schoolfield cemetery with the Rev. Jack Robertson officiating. Military honors will be performed by the Honor Guard of American Legion Post No. 1097.
The family will be at the residence of Sharon G. Jones, 250 Crestwood Drive.

Garnett Hines
VANCE, Va. - Garnett Davis Hines, 74, of 361 Vance Hill Road, died Thursday, March 29, 2001 at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C.
Born May 15, 1926 in Riceville, she was the daughter of Wilson Davis and Annie Forlines Davis.
She was married
Dec. 9, 1944 to John Henry Hines Sr., who survives. She spent most of her life in Hinesville and was a loving mother and grandmother. She worked in her vegetable and flower gardens and worked for Disston Inc. for 18 years. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include one daughter, Karen Hines Mitchell of Vance; three sons, John H. Hines Jr. of Providence, N.C., Ronnie L. Hines, Harvey D. Hines, both of Vance; three sisters, Eula Hines of Dry Fork, Ruby McCormick, Adelaide Lester, both of Danville; one brother, Richard Davis of Lynchburg; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home chapel with the Revs. Gilbert Hawks and Charlie Cundiff officiating. Interment
