Eula Hodnett
GRETNA, Va. - Eula V. Hodnett, 78, of 2284 East Gretna Road, died Thursday, March 29, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 2, 1922 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Robert Hodnett and Emerline Coles Hodnett.
She was a homemaker and member of Fairview Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Larry Hodnett of Gretna, Paul Hodnett, Alvin Hodnett, both of Chatham; four sisters, Bertha Turner, Madie Younger, both of Gretna, Ruth Womack of Philadelphia, Pa., Coatney Crisp of Pittsburgh, Pa.; one brother, Fred Hodnett of Gretna and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Fairview Baptist Church with the Rev. Percy Younger performing the eulogy and the Rev. Hubert White officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will be receiving friends 7-8 p.m. Sunday and at other times at the residence.

T. Conrad Hurd
DANVILLE, Va. - Thomas Conrad Hurd, 92, formerly of Abingdon Place, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at Piney Forest Healthcare Center.
Born Sept. 30, 1908, in Danville, he was the son of William Elijah Hurd and May Campbell Hurd.
He married
Mabel Faye Wilson Hurd, who predeceased him April 10, 1973. He graduated from Danville City Schools and Danville Commercial College. Upon graduation, he worked two months for a local tobacco company, after which he worked for 48 years at American National Bank until his retirement as Senior Vice-President and Senior Cashier. He enjoyed teaching about the Federal Reserve System by giving tours of the bank and teaching at schools. He was a past Exulted Ruler of the Elks Club and past member of the Danville Golf Club. He was a charter member of the Jaycees, where he was treasure and advisor as well as chairman of the first Bundle Day. He was a veteran of the National Guard and member of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany.
Survivors include one daughter, Margaret H. Foster of Gilbert, Ariz.; one brother, Elijah M. Hurd of Greensboro, N.C.; two grandsons and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Mountain View cemetery with the Rev. James Mathieson officiating.
The family will be receiving friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Townes Funeral Home.
The family suggest that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Wales Harrison Memorial Fund or the American Cancer Society.
Townes Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.
Mildred Joyce
DANVILLE, Va. - Mildred Pruitt Joyce of 449 Oak Forest Circle, Danville, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born in Rockingham County, N. Carolina, she was the daughter of Jim Willie Pruitt and Pauline Adams Pruitt.
She was married
to James W. "Billy" Joyce, who survives. She was a member of Mount Hermon Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include stepson Roger Lee Joyce and wife Debbie of Atlanta, Ga.; step-grandson, Brad Joyce of Winston-Salem, N. Carolina; sister, Katherine P. Slaughter and husband Sidney of Danville; sister Hazel P. West of Reidsville, N. Carolina; brother, E. Wayne Pruitt and wife Irene of Reidsville, N.C.; also survived by several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Melvin Pruitt and Jim Willie Pruitt Jr.
The graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Friday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Don Davidson officiating. Interment
will be held at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will be receiving friends at the residence, 449 Oak Forest Circle, Danville.

Ralph Mann
DANVILLE, Va. - Ralph O'Donnell Mann, age 73, of 749 Mount Cross Road, Danville, died Tuesday morning, March 27, 2001, at his residence.
Born July 14, 1927 in Lynchburg, Va., he was the son of Burford (Burt) Augustus Mann and Lillian (Lute) Lucille Martin Mann.
He graduated from Schoolfield High School, class of 1947.
He served in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. Absecon during W.W.II and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a lifetime member of V.F.W. post 647.
He was employed 20 plus years at Dan River Mills and also employed Lorilard Tobacco Company 20 plus years where he retired.
He was married
to Mary Anne T. Mann, who survives of the home.
Survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Gary Wayne Mann and Debbie of Danville, daughter and son-in-law, Kandace Delane Mann Burks and William of Fort Monroe, Va., one brother, Jimmy A. Mann of Danville, two sisters, Linda M. Hyler of Moneta, Va. and Gail M. Fields of Greensboro, N.C., four grandchildren Erica Nicole Mann and Matthew Brooks Mann, both of Danville and William Pendleton Burks and Dylan Augustus Burks, both of Fort Monroe, Va.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 29, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. from Townes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Bill Soyars and the Rev. Rick Markham. Interment
will be in Mountain View cemetery. Military Graveside Honors will be given by the Honor Guard of American Legion Post No. 1097.
The Family will receive friends on Wednesday night at Townes Funeral Home from 7:00-8:30 p.m. and at other times will be at the residence.

Carolyn Miller
DANVILLE, Va. - Carolyn Irene Miller, 56, of 254 Williams Drive, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001 at Duke Medical Center in Durham, N.C. after a period of declining health.
Born April 25, 1944 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of George Averett and Pearl Wilson Averett, who survives.
She was married
to Curtis Miller, who survives. She worked 25 years for Dan River Inc.
Survivors, in addition to her mother and husband, include one son, Victor Miller of Danville; three sisters, Arlene Gunn, Helen Adams, Pam Averett, all of Danville; six brothers, James Averett of Piles Grove, J.J.; Wayne Averett, Lawrence Averett, Roy Averett, Charles Averett, Percy Averett, all of Danville.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. Thomas Johnson officiating. Interment
will follow at Floral Hills Memory Garden cemetery.

Mary Motley
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Mary Anna Motley, 76, of 511 Berry Hill Road, died March 26, 2001 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Feb. 15, 1925 in Halifax County, she was the daughter of John T. Motley and Emma Anderson Motley.
She was a member of County Line Baptist Church.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by five sisters and two brothers.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at County Line Baptist Church cemetery with the Revs. Coy Terry and Latta Terry officiating.
The family will be receiving friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Powell Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Ernest Owens
DANVILLE, Va. - Ernest Lee Owens, 81, of 231 South Ridge Street, died Friday, March 30, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 27, 1920 in Danville, he was the son of Henry M. Owens and Pearlene T. Owens.
He worked as a foreman for Packing Co.
Survivors include four sons, Ernest Owens Jr. of Brooklyn, N.Y., Ralph Owens of Ervington, N.Y., Ronald Owens of Green Level, N.C., Michael Owens of Los Angeles, Calif.; four daughters, Nubia Owens of Phoenix, Ariz., Charlotte O. Wise of Oakton, Rita Jones of Queens, N.Y., Michelle Thompson of Queens, N.Y.; one sister, Sarah Sizemore of Danville; 18 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 4 p.m. Saturday at Cunningham and Hughes Memorial Chapel with Elder Thomas R. Brooks officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Jean Rash
DANVILLE, Va. - Jean Wells Rash, 68, of 529 Indian Trail Road, Danville, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001 at the residence after several years of declining health.
Born Feb. 4, 1933 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Herman L. Wells and Myrtle Herndon Wells.
She was married
to Edward D. Rash Sr., who survives. Mrs. Rash lived her entire life in the Danville area where prior to her retirement she was employed at Health Tex. Mrs. Rash was a member of Swansonville United Methodist Church.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include three sons, Edward D. Rash Jr. of Christianburg, Ricky W. Rash of Christianburg, Jeffrey L. Rash of Danville; three sisters, Irene W. Ferrell of Dry Fork, Ruth W. Hubbard of Richmond, Martha W. Mitchell of Danville; six grandchildren, Katherine Rash, Emily Rash, Jennifer Rash, Jason Rash, Megan Rash and Samuel Rash.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Swansonville United Methodist Churh with the Revs. Randy Williams and Charles B. Ramsey officiating. Interment
will follow at Swansonville United Methodist Church cemetery.

Myrtle Rowland
DANVILLE, Va. - Myrtle Dowdy Rowland, 87, of 269 Fagan Street, died Sunday morning, March 25, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center after several days of declining health.
Born May 8, 1913 in Danville, she was the daughter of Robert Jordan Dowdy and Fannie Lee Crutchfield Dowdy.
She was married
to Jacob A. Rowland, who predeceased her. She worked at Dan River, Inc. until her retirement. She was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church, where she was a former Sunday School Treasurer. She was a member of the Dan River Retirees Club.
Survivors include one son, Aubrey Wayne Rowland of Danville; one granddaughter, Kimberley Ball Wright of Callands; one grandson-in-law, Daryl L. Wright of Callands; one grandson, Donald K. “Buddy” Ball Jr. of Largo, Fla.; one granddaughter-in-law, Tina P. Ball of Largo, Fla. and three great-grandchildren, Victoria “Tori” Noel Wright of Callands, Dakota Tyler Ball of Largo, Fla. and Ciarra Danielle Ball of Largo, Fla.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Eddie Collins and honorarily the Rev. Rick Withrow officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Wilma Shavers
DANVILLE, Va. - Wilma Catherine Shavers, 88, of 204 Palm Street, died Saturday, March 24, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 1, 1912 in Caswell County, N.C., she was the daughter of Mary Rainey.
She was married
to Bruce C. Shavers, who predeceased her. She worked at Dan River Mills, Inc. before her retirement.
Survivors include two daughters, Jean Garrett of Danville, Rhumel Fuller of Greenville, N.C.; four sons, Earl Rainey Sr. of Hampton, Carter Lee Shavers of Philadelphia, Pa., Shirley Shavers, Duward Shavers, both of Danville.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Smith Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Nathan Scovens officiating. Interment
will follow at Prospect Baptist Church cemetery.
