John Slate
RINGGOLD, Va. - John Baptist Slate, 102, formerly of the Mountain Hill community of Ringgold, died Friday, March 30, 2001 at Brian Center in Yanceyville, N.C.
Born Dec. 22, 1898 in Rockingham County, N.C., he was married
to Nannie Slate, who predeceased him. He was of the baptist faith.
He lived most of his life in Pittsylvania County and worked for Dan River Mills for many years, later working for Leggett-Myers Tobacco Company as a night watchman.
Survivors include one son, Harden W. Slate of Ringgold; one daughter, Elmer S. Marshall of Rinngold; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren and 11 step-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents and wife, by one son, Cleveland Slate and one step-son, Lynn James Harris.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. James Burkes officiating.
The family will be receiving friends at the residence of Harden W. Slate, 1417 Ringgold Road, Ringgold, Va. 24586.

Wanda Smith
CHATHAM, Va. - Wanda Ann Conner Smith, 36, of 1724 Emery Road, died Thursday, March 29, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 24, 1964 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Ryland Maynard Conner and Peggy Jean Farmer Conner, who survive.
She was married
to Stuart Hamilton Smith, who survives.
Survivors, in addition to her parents and husband, include two sons, Barry Hamilton Smith, Jeffrey Scott Smith, both of the residence; one brother, Jeffrey David Conner of Chatham; paternal grandmother, Louise H. Conner of Chatham and maternal grandmother, Isa Farmer of Pittsville.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at the Church of God of Prophecy in Java with the Revs. Edward L. Pope, Albert Moser and Gilbert Dunbar officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Saturday at Scott Funeral Home and at other times at the residence, 1632 Emery Road, Chatham.

Jadaquiss D. Stephens-McCain
DANVILLE, Va. - Jadaquiss D. Stephens-McCain, of 372 Winston Circle, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001.
Born March 28, 2001, he was the son of Jermaine McCain and Sherika Stephens, both of Danville, who survive.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include grandmothers, Wilma Stephens of Danville, Clares McCain of Blairs.
He was predeceased by grandfathers, James McCain and Paul A. Stephens.
The private graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday.

Barry Walton
POWHATAN, Va. - Barry Ricky Walton, 51, formerly of 152 West Prospect Street, Danville, died Saturday, March 24, 2001, in Powhatan.
Born March 22, 1950, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Lacoma Walton and Odaries Saunders Walton, both of whom survive.
He was a veteran of the United States Army.
Survivors include, in addition to his parents, two daughters, Tonya Edgerton, and Nikkie Walton, both of Bronx, N.Y.; one son, Shawn Walton of Bronx, N.Y.; two sisters, Barbara Walton of Danville, and Sharon Walton of Missouri City, Texas; three brothers, Eddie Walton of Yorktown Heights, N.Y., Ralph Walton of Danville, and Michael Walton of Burlington, N.C.; maternal grandmother, Mary Saunders and paternal step-grandmother, Byrdia Walton.
He was predeceased by one sister, Deborah Inge.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Friday at the chapel of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home with the Rev. James Dillard officiating. Interment
will follow at Walton-Fultz Family cemetery.

Ocie Wayne
DANVILLE, Va. - Ocie B. Wayne, 92, of 896 Arnette Blvd., died Monday, March 26, 2001 at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born June 27, 1908 in Oakvale, W.Va., she was the daughter of Rachel and James Hazelwood.
She lived most of her life in Danville and worked for Dan River Inc.
Survivors include two daughters, June H. Walston and Jean K. Parker, both of Danville; one sister, Burna Hill of Oakvale, W.Va.; ten grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by one daughter, Eileen Valorous.
The graveside service will be held in Rich Creek.

Chuck Wilson
FOREST, Va. - Charles Henderson "Chuck" Wilson III, 47, of 506 Jefferson Woods Drive, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born Sept. 13, 1953, in Danville, he was the son of Charles Henderson Wilson Jr. and Myrtle Langhorne Wilson, who survives.
He was married
Dec. 18, 1993, to Debbie Fesperman Wilson, who survives. He lived most of his life in Danville and attended Danville Public Schools. He lived in Forest for the past ten years and was manager of Carmike Cinemas in Lynchburg.
Survivors, in addition to his wife and mother, include three sons, Charles Andrew Wilson of Harrisonburg, Matthew Tyler Wilson, John Alexander Wilson, both of Forest; one brother, Dabney L. Wilson of Chatham; two sisters, Cindy Wilson Shoemaker of Richmond, Susan Wilson Clark of Lynchburg and maternal grandmother, Florence Mitchell Langhorne of Richmond.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Mountain View cemetery in Danville with the Rev. Dr. R.A. Daily officiating.
The family will be receiving friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the residence in Lynchburg, 7-8:30 Friday at Townes Funeral Home in Danville and at other times at the residence of John Fesperman, 250 Starmont Boulevard, Danville.

AXTON, Va. - Delores Faye Chattin Wilson, 52, of 614 Anchor Road, Lot No. 7, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001 at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville following a brief illness.
Born Jan. 25, 1949, she was the daughter of George Chattin and Vivian Pruitt Adkins, who survives.
She was married
Sept 18, 1965 to Melvin C. Wilson Sr., who survives. She lived most of her life in Danville and moved to Axton two years ago. She worked for K & W Cafeteria. She was a member of Timberlake Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to her husband and mother, include children, Cynthia Sams of Danville, Melvin C. Wilson Jr. of Bassett, Teresa Michelle Lewis of Danville, Samuel Edward Wilson of Colorado, Tammy G. Foster of Danville; one brother, Melvin Adams Jr. of Danville; one sister, Peggy C. Creasy of Charlotte, N.C.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

DANVILLE, Va. - Michael N. Wimbush, 34, of 616 Claiborne Street, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001 at 346 Holbrook Street.
Born June 26, 1966 in Danville, he was the son of Nathaniel Wimbush and Sylvia "Ted" Wimbush.
He worked as a self-employed hairstylist and was a member of Evening Star Holiness Church.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include one sister, Michelle Bullurd of Virginia Beach.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Missionary Church with Bishop John Morton officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Gaynell Winn
DANVILLE, Va. - Gaynell Hines Winn, 85, formerly of 323 Summitt Road, died Friday, March 30, 2001 at Piney Forest Health Care Center after declining health since 1996.
Born Jan. 20, 1916, she was the daughter of Claude Edward Hines Sr. and Lemma Dodd Hines.
She married
Joseph Carl "J.C." Winn, who predeceased her Nov. 1, 1998.
She lived all of her life in Pittsylvania County and Danville and worked for Dan River, Inc. before her retirement in 1978. She also operated a catering service. She was a member of West Main Baptist Church, the Fidelis Sunday School Class, a charter member of the Sarah Bradley Garden Club and the Colonial Garden Club.
Survivors include one brother, Russell Hines of Danville; two sisters, Elsie Shaw of Yanceyville, N.C., Jean Vernon of Milton, N.C.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by two brothers, Claude E. Hines Jr. and Horace L. Hines.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Mountain View cemetery with the Rev. Bruce Wilson officiating.
The family will be receiving friends following the service.

Virginia Adkins
CHATHAM, Va. - Virginia Walker Adkins, 82, formerly of Chatham, died Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at Gretna Health Care Center.
Born Oct. 17, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Frank A. Walker and Essie McClanahan Walker.
She was married
to Berman Adkins, who predeceased her. She was a member of Greenpond Baptist Church and a retired teacher with the Pittsylvania County School System.
Survivors include one brother, Robert Walker of Chesapeake and three sisters, Mary Manoley of Richmond, Ethel Gulick of Chesterfield and Lena Toney of Gretna.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by four brothers, Aaron Walker, Frank Walker, James Walker and Johnson Walker.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Colbert-Moran Chapel with the Rev. John McCray officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
