Mildred Andrews

DANVILLE, Va. - Mildred Ingram Andrews, 80, of 1111 Main Street, Stratford House, died Wednesday night, April 4, 2001, at her residence.
Born Sept. 8, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, Va., she was the daughter of George S. Ingram and Empress Wilkerson Ingram.
She was married to Herman Hughes Andrews on June 18, 1942 and he predeceased her on March 19, 1994. She lived in Danville most of her life. She was a registered nurse having graduated from Danville Memorial School of Nursing. She worked for several area docters and the Danville hospital until her retirement. She was an active member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church.
She is the last member of her immediate family.
She was predeceased by four sisters and five brothers.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday from Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Jonathan Bennett.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Townes Funeral Home and at other times will be at 222 Shamrock Drive.

Cassie Barrows

SUTHERLIN, Va. - Cassie Maude Woodson Barrows, 93, formerly of 253 Slayton Road, died Monday, April 2, 2001, at Riverside Health Care Center after three months of declining health.
Born May 28, 1907, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of William J. Woodson and Emma Midkiff Woodson.
She was married on October 20, 1950, to Vernon H. Barrows, who predeceased her. She was a member of Old Mill Primitive Baptist and had lived her life in Pittsylvania County. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by two sisters, Dora Ann Woodson Tate, Mary Blanch Woodson and two brothers, Claude Judson Woodson and James Acey Woodson.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Highland Burial Park with Elder Danny Parker officiating. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will be receiving friends 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel.
Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.

Melvin Bass

RINGGOLD, Va. - Melvin S. Bass, 77, of 4079 South Boston Road, died Monday, April 2, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health and one day in the hospital.
Born April 20, 1923, in Halifax County, he was a son of Claude Clifton Bass and Nettie Hamlett Bass.
He was married April 9, 1949, to Frances Scearce Bass of the home, who survives. Mr. Bass had lived in Halifax County and moved to Ringgold in 1956. He was a retired 1st Sergeant with the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Lakewood Evangelical Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Willing Workers Bible Class. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was a member of the National Guard prior to entering the Army and becoming a member of F Company, 116th Infrantry 29th Division from South Boston, Va. He served with the Army during W.W. II in the invasion of Normandy. He was wounded in Brest, France. He was a disabled Veteran at the time of discharge with 2 Purple Hearts and a number of other various medals.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include one son, Kenneth W. (Kenny) Bass of Ringgold, Va.; one daughter-in-law, Debra W. Bass of Ringgold, Va.; one daughter, Tammy B. Payne of Danville, Va.; one son-in-law, Kenneth Payne of Danville, Va.; three brothers, Early Bass of Danville, Va., Albert Bass of Danville, Va., Dean Bass of South Boston, Va.; one sister, Lorene B. Lucado of Appomattox, Va.; 3 grandchildren, Blake E. Bass, Patrick R. Willhite & Kenneth Payne, Jr.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by three brothers, Elwood Bass, Willard Bass, Curtis Bass and one sister, Connie B. Collie.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 4th at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Reverend Jimmy Burks and the Reverend David Wilson officiating. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park with Military Honors by American Legion Post 1097.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday night at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and other times at the residence, 4097 South Boston Hwy., Ringgold, Va.
The family suggest that memorials be made to the Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, Va. 24541 or to the Ringgold Volunteer Fire Department 1540 Ringgold Road, Ringgold Va. 24586.

Alvin Boyd

DANVILLE, Va. - Alvin Isaac Boyd, 80, of 1957 Moorefield Bridge Road, died Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at Duke Medical Center in Durham, N.C., after three weeks of declining health and two weeks in the hospital.
Born Sept. 20, 1920, in Patrick County, he was the son of Charlie Garfield Boyd and Lalar Radford Boyd.
He was married Dec. 15, 1945, to Sally Payne Boyd, who survives.
He lived most of his life in Danville and worked for Dan River Mills for 35 years before his retirement. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, serving in Europe during World War II. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include one daughter, Brenda Boyd Turpin of Milton, N.C.; two sisters, Eva Underwood of Ferrum, Elvie Bowman of Danville, and two grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by three sisters, Elsie Thompson, Delois Shively, Zula Whorley and one brother, Clifford Boyd.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Soyars officiating. Interment icon will follow at Schoolfield cemetery.
The family will be receiving friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Swicegood Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.

Mary Chandler

DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Tyree Chandler, 87, a resident of Riverside Healthcare Center, died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 27, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Charlie B. Jennings and Bessie Haley Jennings and was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one son, William N. Tyree of Lynchburg; one sister, Lorena Pattisall of Danville; one brother, Walter Jennings of Oklahoma City, Okla.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Highland Burial Park.
The family will be receiving friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Townes Funeral Home and other times at 711 Springfield Road.
Townes Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.

Gracie Clark

PETERSBURG, Va. - Gracie Clark, 85, formerly of Chatham, died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at Southside Regional Hospital.
Born Dec. 25, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Tom and Pinkie Stone Robertson.
She was married to Fletcher Clark, who predeceased her. She was a member of Greater Triumph Missionary Baptist Church, past president of the Missionary Society, Kitchen Committee, Nursing Unity and was a member of the Usher Board and Senior Choir.
Survivors include one daughter, Shirley Clark Temple of Richmond; one son, John Robertson of Baltimore; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at Greater Triumph Missionary Baptist Church, with Dr. H.G. McGhee officiating. Interment icon will follow at the church cemetery.
Viewing will be held 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Howerton Funeral Home will be in charge of the arrangements.

Rosa Corbett

DANVILLE, Va. - Rosa James Corbett, 89, of 809 Betts Street, died, Sunday, April 1, 2001, at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 12, 1912, in Caswell County, N.C., she was the daughter of Alvis James and Maude Strater James.
She was married to Julian Corbett Sr., who predeceased her.
Survivors include two sons, Rayfield Corbett of Pleasantville, N.J., Haywood James, of Danville; one sister, Cora James, of Danville and two brothers, Jack and Woodrow James, both of Pelham, N.C.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Wilbur Corbett.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Shiloh Baptist Church, with the Rev. Cecil Bridgeforth officiating. Interment icon will follow at the Oak Hill cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home, 809 Betts Street.
Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Rhonda Davis

DANVILLE, Va. - Davis, Rhonda Lou Hall, 46, of Danville, passed away Friday, April 6, 2001. She is survived by her daughters, Amanda Katherine Davis and Victoria Nichole Davis, both of Roanoke; Fiancee, Jim Heldreth, of Roanoke; mother and step father, Betty and Syd Clifton, of Warner Robins, Ga.; sister, Becky Hawkins, of Danville; brother, Davis Hall, of Danville. A Funeral Service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 9, 2001 at Simpson-Tharp Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m., Sunday, April 8, 2001 at Simpson-Tharp Funeral Home. Arrangements by Simpson-Tharp Funeral Home and Cremation Center 5160 Peters Creek Road Roanoke, Va. 24019 (366-0707).

Jake Earnist

DANVILLE, Va. - Allen Warren "Jake" Earnist, 77, of 223 Vicar Place, died Friday, March 30, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center, after several months of declining health.
Born November 10, 1923, in Lynchburg, Va. he was the son of Arthur William Earnist and Maude Roberts Earnist.
He was married Beulah Londeree Earnist, who died July 11, 1993. They were married June 4, 1948. Mr. Earnest moved to Danville from Lynchburg in 1947. He started the Canada Produce Company in 1947 and was owner and operator with his wife until retirement. He was a member of Keen Street Baptist Church. Mr. Earnist was a member of the greatest generation and served his country during World War II in the U.S. Navy. Two of the ships he served aboard suffered battle damage.
Mr. Earnest is survived by two sisters-in-law, June King, of Danville and Joyce Earnist, of Lynchburg; a brother-in-law, Glenn Londeree, of Lynchburg; several nieces and nephews, including, Cathy King, of Danville, Rhonda Slavish, of Myrtle Beach, SC, Linda Wilkes of Roanoke and Tamera Lemon, of Lynchburg; and special friends and neighbors, Larry and Linda Crumpton, of Danville.
A funeral will be held Monday, April 2, 2001, at 2:00 p.m. at Keen Street Baptist Church, Danville, Va. with the Reverend Thomas Brown officiating. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park with military honors by the American Legion Post #1097.
The family will receive friends Sunday, April 1, 2001, from 7-8:30 p.m. at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other time at the residence.
Memorials may be made to, Keen Street Baptist Church, 541, Kenn Street Danville, Va. 24540 or to the Danville Cancer Association, 1225 West Main Street, Danville, Va., 24541.

John Fitzgerald

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - John P. Fitzgerald, 71, of 1014 Catalina Avenue, formerly of Chatham, Va., died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at the residence.
Born June 4, 1929, in Chatham, Va., he was the son of John and Eva D. Fitzgerald.
He was a member of Beulah Temple United Holy Church in Ohio and worked as a United States steel worker until his retirement.
Survivors include three stepsons, Jonathan J., Alonzo J., Anthony V. Clark, all of Youngstown; three stepdaughters, Lucy Mae Conners, Patricia Clark-Pippens, both of Youngstown, Valerie Johnson of Clinton, Md.; three brothers, William Fitzgerald of Mt. Vernon, N.Y., Irvin Fitzgerald, Wilmer Fitzgerald, both of Chatham, Va.; two sisters, Pearl F. Perry of Chatham, Va., Bessie Gregory of Toledo; 42 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Howerton Funeral Home Chapel with Minister Millie Clark officiating. Interment icon will follow at Fitzgerald Family cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and other times at the residence of Pearl Perry, 173 Moses Mill Road, Chatham, Va.
Howerton Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.

Jeffrey Gibson

BRONX, N.Y. - Jeffrey Craig Gibson, 47, of the Bronx, died March 9, 2001 in Manhattan as the result of a sudden heart attack.
Born in Danville, Va., he was the son of Walter and Edna Gibson.
He was married to Tree O'Donnell, who survives. He worked in post-production for commercials and movies at Manhattan Transfer in Manhattan.
Survivors include one son, Jack of Bronx, N.Y.; one daughter, Rosemary of Bronx, N.Y.; one brother, Garry Gibson of Vero Beach, Fla. and one sister, Laurie Pritchett of Danville, Va.
The burial and eucharist took place 11 a.m. Saturday, March 10, 2001 at St. Bartholomew's Church in the City of New York.
