Joseph Kraus
CHATHAM, Va. - Joseph Henry Kraus, 67, of 2264 Slatesville Road, formerly of Farmingville, N.Y., died Saturday, April 7, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 1933 in Queens, N.Y., he was the son of Oscar Frank Kraus and Lillian Lezer Kraus.
He was married
to Doris Sadlo Kraus, who survives.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include four daughters, Cynthia K. Johnson of Mastic, N.Y., Rosemarie K. Thomas of St. Cloud, Fla., Virginia K. DeMola of Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y., Katherine Kraus of Selden, N.Y.; two sons, Joseph Henry Kraus, John Frank Kraus, both of Chatham; one sister, Lillian K. Caselli of Hudson, Fla; one brother, Oscar Kraus of Renton, Wash. and 14 grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Scott Funeral Home with the Rev. Darrell Campbell officiating.
The family will be receiving friends at the residence.

Louise Lee
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Mrs. Louise Dawson Lee, formerly of Danville, Virginia, and more recently of Huntsville, Alabama died Friday April 6, 2001 at her residence. She was 65.
Born July 12, 1935 in Slayford, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Clardie and Irene May Dawson. She was married
to Mr. David Lee who also predeceased her.
Survivors include: one daughter, Angela Duncan of Huntsville, Alabama; one brother, Clardie Dawson of Cambria Heights, New York; four sisters, Malinda Perry and Yvonne Ashcroft of Baltimore, Maryland, Cynthia Dawson of Huntsville, Alabama, and Deborah Mayo of Danville. One mother-in-law, Lula Lee and one father-in-law, William Lee Sr. both of Danville. In addition there is a host of other relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends at the home of Lula Lee, 929 Stokes Street, Danville, Virginia.
Funeral services for Mrs. Louise Dawson Lee will be conducted 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 10, 2001 at the Chapel of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home, 707 Wilson Street, Danville. Bishop Arthur Linder Sr. will officiate. Interment
will follow at Oak Hill cemetery.

Avesta Long
DANVILLE, Va. - Avesta Eugene "Gene" Long, 79, of 156 Northwest Blvd., died Saturday, March 31, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 27, 1923, in Danville, he was the son of Eury Eucolus Long and Lizzie Mann Long.
He was married
to Ira Menta McKinney Long on Sept. 12, 1946. He worked for Dan Crawford Construction just about all his adult life as a carpenter. He worked for a few years for John W. Daniel Construction until his retirement. He was a veteran of the United States Navy having served during World War II. He was a member of A.A.R.P. and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include, one son, Eugene J. Long, of Enid, Okla.; two daughters, Betty L. White, of Danville Va., Linda L. Bailey, of Brosville, Va.; one brother, Alvin C. Long of Danville, Va.; two sisters, Elsie Matherley, of Danville, Sherry Ashford of Danville; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one brother, James C. Long; one sister, Gloria Johns and one great-grandson.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Hershel Stone officiating. Interment
will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens with military honors by American Legion Pst 325 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel, and other time at the residence 156 Northwest Blvd.
Carl Long
DANVILLE, Va. - Carl Akin Long, 76, 564 Henry Street, died Friday, March 30, 2001.
Born July 11, 1924, in Milton, N.C. He was the son of Jesse Samuel Long and Annie Thaxton Long.
He was married
to Mary Ellis Long, he worked for Dan River Inc. as loom fixer until his retirement. He attended Central Blvd. Church of God. He was a veteran of the United States Navy having served during World War II.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons of Robert J. "Bobby" Long, of Danville, Carl "Tony" Long Jr. in Danville; two daughters, Sandra L. Smith, of Danville, Va., Delores C. Heard, Baltimore, Md.,; one brother, Jesse S. Long, from Miss.; nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
A graveside funeral will be held, Monday, 11 a.m., at Floral Hills Memory Gardens, with the Rev. John Meadows and the Rev. Billy Hedrick, with graveside military honors by American Legion Memorial Post 25 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends at the residence only.

Teresa MacGorman
CHATHAM, Va. - Teresa Marie MacGorman, 17, of 409 Spruce Hill, died Saturday, April 7, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 28, 1983 in Barstow, Calif., she was the daughter of Jeffrey Merrill MacGorman and Phillis Rennee MacGorman, who survive.
Survivors, in addition to her parents of the residence, include one sister, Roshel Renee MacGorman; one brother, Drake Allen MacGorman both of Chatham; maternal grandparents, James Ottie Barnes and Mary Lou Barnes of Clarkrange, Tenn. and paternal grandparents, Merrill MacGorman and Delores MacGorman of Houston, Tx.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mount Hermon Baptist Church with the Rev. Don Davidson officiating. Interment
will follow at Hillcrest Burial Park in Chatham.

Coral Minnix
GLADYS, Va. - Coral Haywood Minnix, 79, of 4013 Collins Ferry Road, died Wednesday, April 6, 2001 at the residence.
Born Dec. 23, 1921 in Campell County, he was the son of Edward Gordon Minnix and Florine Evans Minnix.
He was married
52 years ago to Branchie Trent Minnix, who predeceased him. He was a member of Edge Baptist Church and was a retired farmer and United States Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include four daughters, Amelia Smith, Kay Dawson, both of Gladys, Sue Doss of Gretna, Coral Elder of Vernon Hill; two sisters, Vivian Yates of Lynchburg, Edith Atcheson of Altamonte Springs, Fla. and eight grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents and wife, by one brother, Edward Minnix.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Mt. Carmel Methodist Church with the Revs. Don Cockes and Andy Grose officiating.
The family will be receiving friends 7-9 p.m. Saturday at Finch and Finch Funeral Home in Gladys and other times at the residence.

Raymond Moore
CASCADE, Va. - Raymond Hale Moore, 58, of 5265 Whispering Spring Road, died Saturday, March 31, 2001, at Veterans Hospital in Durham N.C., after several years of declining health.
Born Aug. 20, 1942, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Thomas A. Moore and Bessie Mitchell Moore.
He was married
to Carolyn Irene Hand Moore, who survives. He lived most of his life in the Danville area and was of the Holiness Faith. He was retired from Pepsi Cola Bottling Co. where he worked as a truck driver. He was a veteran of the United States Navy.
Survivors in addition to his wife, include one brother George Thomas Moore, of Danville and one sister Helen M. Moore, of Danville.
He was predeceased by two sons, Raymond Hale Moore, Jr., Tracy Moore; one brother, Gilmer Glenwood Moore; two sisters, Lucille Smith and Marie Gregory.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Chapel with the Rev. Steve Johnson officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, and at other times at the residence, 5625 Whispering Pines Road, in the Brosville Community.

Jenny Motley
DANVILLE, Va. - Jenny Elizabeth Motely, 100, formerly of 166 Gray Street, died Saturday, April 7, 2001 at Roman Eagle Memorial Home where she had resided since June 22, 1987.
Born Dec. 1, 1900, she was the daughter of James Charles Motley and Martha Bet Glasgow. She lived her entire life in Danville and retired from J.T. Townes Printing after 43 years of service. She was a member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church.
She was the last surviving member of her generation and was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by one sister, Nancy Motley Payne.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Leemont cemetery with the Rev. Randy Duncan officiating. Interment
will follow at Leemont cemetery.
The family will be receiving friends 3:30-5 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel.

Frances Oakes
CHATHAM, Va. - Frances Foy Bray Oakes, 69, of 2548 Spring Garden Road died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at the residence of her daughter, Wanda O. Shields, 129 Banister Court, after one year of declining health.
Born July 3, 1931, in Roanoke, she was the daughter of Henry Webster Foy and Grace Dexter Smith Foy.
She was married
to Harry William Oakes Sr., who survives. She had lived most of her life in Pittsylvania County and the Spring Garden community for the past 20 years. She was a homemaker and of the Holiness faith.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include four daughters, Gloria B. Hall of Mebane, N.C., Brenda B. Meeks of Woolwine, and Doris O. Holley and Wanda O. Shields, both of Danville; three sons, Harry William Oakes Jr. and Melvin Snead Oakes, both of Chatham, and Alvin Norman Oakes of Danville; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by one son, Howard Bray.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Highland Burial Park, with the Rev. R.J. Barber Jr. officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main chapel and at other times at the residence of Wanda O. Shields, 129 Banister Court, Danville.

Suzanne Oakes
DANVILLE, Va. - Suzanne Worley Oakes, 44, of 58 Milton Ave., died Thursday, April 5, 2001, at the residence after five years of declining health.
Born Aug. 4, 1956, in Danville, she was the daughter of Robert L. "Bob" Worley, who survives, and Peggy Davis Worley.
She worked at Best Western as a desk clerk until her retirement due to disability. She attended St. Luke’s United Methodist Church.
Survivors, in addition to her father, include her stepmother, Sue Worley of Danville; one half-brother, Chris Worley of Charlotte, N.C.; and one son, Jeran Kenneth Lewis of Providence, N.C.
She was predeceased, in addition to her mother, by one brother, Timothy Wesley Worley.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. David J. Palmer and the Rev. Randy Duncan officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Lorene Palmer
RICHMOND, Va. - Lorene Compton Palmer, 78, of Richmond and formerly of Hunting Creek, Va., died April 5, 2001, at St. Marys Hospital, Richmond.
Born in Halifax County, Va., on July 9, 1922, she was the daughter of Joseph F. Compton and Emma Layne Compton.
She was married
to James T. Palmer. She was a member of Lakeside Baptist Church in Richmond, Va.
Survivors include two daughters, Jean P. Hudgins, of Richmond, Sandra P. Harris, of Richmond,; one son, James T. Palmer of Richmond.; one sister, Ellen C. Hammack of Richmond,; one brother Carroll W. Compton of Nathalie, Va. and five grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Lewis officiating. Interment
will follow at Halifax Memorial Gardens.
