Edith Townsend
DANVILLE, Va. - Edith Andis Townsend, 80, of 834 Ferry Road, died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at the residence.
Born Dec. 20, 1920, in Washington County, she was the daughter of Henry Andis and Maggie Snodgrass Andis.
She was married
to George Washington Townsend, who predeceased her Feb. 14, 1998. She spent her early years in Abingdon before moving to Danville in 1951 where she was a homemaker and member of Forest Lawn Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, George Thomas Townsend of Gloucester City, N.J.; two sisters, Maxie Townsend of Bristol, Ethel White of Abingdon; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home chapel with the Revs. Gilmer Setliff and Daryl Joyce officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will be receiving friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Willie Walker
GRETNA, Va. - Willie T. Walker, 84, of 517 Zion Road, died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born Feb. 12, 1917, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Warren Walker and Lucy Mease Walker.
He was married
to Angie Walker, who survives. He was an employee of Bassett Furniture Co. until his retirement and was a member of the Burning Bush Holiness Church in Pittsville.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three sons, Curtis Walker and Lindy Walker, both of Gretna, and Wilfred Walker of Danville; six daughters, Mary Simmons of Washington, D.C., Virginia Casey of Upper Marlboro, Md., Doretha L. Aiken of Clinton, Md., Elsie Franklin of Richmond, and Marilyn Caldwell and Sylvia Moore, both of Lynchburg; two sisters, Stella Witcher of Pittsville and Elizabeth Stephens of Roanoke; and 18 grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by one sister, Hattie English; and one granddaughter.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Burning Bush Holiness Church, with Elder Gary Witcher officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Colonel Richard J. Watson ‘Ret’
CHATHAM, Va. - Col. Richard Jackson Watson age 71 of 205 South Main St. Chatham died Monday April 2, 2001 at his residence. Mr. Watson was born November 5, 1929 in Pittsylvania County. He was the son of the late Fletcher B. Watson, III and Bettie Whitehead Watson. He is survived by his wife Nancy Reed Watson of the residence; one daughter, Elizabeth W. Brodsky and his son-in-law, Robert Brodsky, both of Houston, Texas; two brothers, Fletcher B. Watson, IV of Chatham and Page Watson of Estes Park, Colo.; three granddaughters, Jessica Toy, Stephanie Brodsky and Sarah Brodsky. He was a member of Watson United Methodist Church and a retired Colonel from the U.S. Air Force. He attended Randolph Macon College, Ashland, Va. and graduated from the University of Omaha, Nebraska.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday April 4, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. from the Watson United Methodist Church by Rev. Charles Wickham and Bishop Heath Light. Interment
with full military honors will be in the Chatham Burial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday April 3, 2001 at Scott Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence. The family request in lieu of flower donations be made to the Chatham Rescue Squad or the Chatham Vol. Fire Department. Scott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Obie White
BALTIMORE, Md. - Obie White, 87, 4511 Rokeby Road, and formerly of Chatham, Va., died Sunday, April 1, 2001, in Baltimore.
Born Nov. 17, 1913, he was the son of Eliza White.
He was married
to Mary Agnes White. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Greater Triumph Missionary Baptist Church where he served in the Laymens Club.
Survivors include three daughters, Willie Ree Griffin and Vadela Mae Jackson, both of Baltimore, Elizabeth Jenkins, of White Plains, N.J.; four sons, Robert White of White Plains, N.Y., William White of Jamestown, N.Y., Arthur White of Chesterfield, Va., Hubert White of Chatham, Va.; two brothers, Marion White of Chatham, Va., Willie White of Trenton, N.J.; two sisters, Rosa White of Danville, Va., Isabella Robinson, of Chatham, Va; twenty-four grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased in death by his wife, Mary Agnes White; one son, Tom White; two brothers, Elder Jack White and Wilson White.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Friday at the Greater Triumph Missionary Baptist Church with the Dr. H. G. McGhee, Sr. officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will be at the residence of a son, Hubert White, 812 Hickory Road, Chatham, Va.

MARTINSVILLE, Va. - James Wesley Williams, of 1151 East Church Street, Martins Landing, Martinsville, Va., died Tuesday, April 4, 2001, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville/Henry County.

Lena Williamson
MT. VERNON, N.Y. - Lena Williamson, 79, died Saturday, March 31, 2001.
Born in Yanceyville, N.C., she was the daughter of Marshall Williamson and Lucille Lee Williamson.
She attended school in Danville, Va., and moved to New York where she worked as a housekeeper for private families. She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon.
Survivors include one son, Thomas Williamson of Seaside Heights, N.J.; one daughter, Catherine McCain of Danville, Va.; six grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by two grandchildren.
Visitation will be held 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Wednesday at Lee's Funeral Home, L.L.C., 160 Fisher Avenue, White Plains, N.Y., followed by the funeral at 12 p.m. Interment
will take place at Mt. Hope cemetery, Hastings-on-Hudson.

Gracie Wright
NATHALIE, Va. - Gracie Martin Wright, 98, of 4149 Leda Grove Road, died April 7, 2001 at Woodview.
Born Nov. 8, 1902 in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Walter Giles Martin and Fannie Lee Wade Martin.
She was married
to Ernest Linwood Wright, who predeceased her. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Republican Grove.
Survivors include one daughter, Betty Cunningham of Nathalie; three grandchildren; seven great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by one son, Walter Linwood Wright and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of Republican Grove with the Rev. Shelton Miles officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.

Margaret Gilbert Abbott
DANVILLE, Va. - Margaret Gilbert Abbott, 87, of 1261 South Boston Road, died Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center, after three months of declining health and one week in the hospital.
Born Nov. 16, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Robert Bruce Gilbert Sr. and Lelia Kent Gilbert.
She was married
Dec. 27, 1934, to James Nathaniel Abbott, who survives. She was a homemaker and had lived her entire life in the Danville and Pittsylvania County areas where she was a member of Glenwood Memorial Baptist Church and served as church pianist for many years.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include three sons, David W. Abbott Sr. of Penhook, Samuel L. Abbott of Mooresville, N.C., and James Neal Abbott Sr. of Mechanicsville; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by one brother, Robert Bruce Gilbert Jr.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Glenwood Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Rick Lancaster officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

Margaret Barbour
DRY FORK, Va. - Margaret Wells Barbour, 95, of 14725 Franklin Turpike, died Monday, April 9, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 25, 1905, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Howard Sturn Wells and Lottie Pearl Boaze Wells.
She was married
Dec. 26, 1928, to the Rev. Richard Clifford Barbour, who predeceased her Oct. 2, 1991.
She attended Whitmell Farm Life School and Blackstone College.
At the age of 17, she started teaching in elementary school and taught for five years.
She served with her husband at many churches in Virginia. She taught Sunday School for over 60 years and was a member of Swansonville United Methodist Church.
She served as Interim Pastor at Oakes Memorial Baptist Church for several months following her retirement.
Survivors include four sisters, Ethel W. Stanley, Pauline W. Burch and Arlene W. Roach, all of Danville, and Thelma W. Martin of Virginia Beach; and one brother, Randolph W. Wells of Danville.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by three sisters, Pearl W. Herndon, Danie W. McDaniel and Lona Cray Wells; and five brothers, E. Hylton Wells, Herman L. Wells, Neal E. Wells, Everett L. "Bill" Wells and Standford S. Wells.
The cryptside service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Randy S. Williams officiating.

Julian Brown
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Julian Doyce Brown, 65, of 3099 Dan River Church Road died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at his home.
Born Aug. 5, 1935, in Mebane, N.C., he was married
to Roberta J. Brown, who survives.
He was a member of Ash Avenue Baptist Church and a lifetime member of VFW Post 8243. He was a boiler inspector for Hartford Steam Boiler Insp. and Ins. He served in the United States Navy and United States Coast Guard.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of South Boston, include two daughters, Pamela L. Brown of Norfolk and Stacy E. Brown-Bull of Manassas; one sister, Geneva Pedersen of Richmond; and four grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Ash Avenue Baptist Church, with the Rev. J.C. Raper officiating. Interment
will follow at Oak Ridge cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Brooks Funeral Home.

Mildred Campbell
RINGGOLD, Va. - Mildred McClurd Campbell, 86, of 660 Rock Springs Road died Friday, April 13, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been in the hospital one day.
Born Aug. 27, 1914, in Ellijay, Ga., she was the daughter of William Hix McClurd and Mary Florence Hardin McClurd.
She was married
to Donald Lee Campbell Sr., who predeceased her.
She lived most of her life in Danville.
Survivors include three sons, Donald Lee Campbell Jr. and Carl P. Campbell, both of Ringgold, and John H. Campbell of Danville; and one daughter, Peggy Long of Pembroke Pines, Fla.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by one son, Max Campbell.
A private graveside service will be held in Ellijay, Ga.
