Martha Croxton

DANVILLE, Va. - Martha Leslie Mobley Croxton, 83, of 14 Country Club Drive, died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at Baptist Hospital of Winston-Salem, N.C.
Born Aug. 10, 1917, in Heath Springs, S.C., she was the daughter of Ralph P. Mobley Sr. and Sallie Morgan Mobley.
She was married Oct. 12, 1939, to Edward L. Croxton, who predeceased her April 5, 1983. She was a member of West Main Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sisters, Mary Lewis Mobley Gunter of Darlington, S.C., Frances Mobley Cody of Lancaster, S.C., and Sybil Mobley Phipps of Tupelo, Miss; and two brothers, George J. Mobley and Ralph P. Mobley Jr., both of Heath Springs, S.C.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Wilson officiating. The graveside service will be held 3 p.m. Saturday at Kershaw cemetery in Kershaw, S.C., with the Rev. David Crenshaw and the Rev. Dan Crenshaw officiating.
The family will be receiving friends following the service in Danville and 2 p.m. Saturday at Cauthen Funeral Home in Kershaw, S.C.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Voila Curvington

DANVILLE, Va. - Voila Ann Lester Curvington, 74, of 431 West Thomas St. died Monday, April 9, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 6, 1927, in Person County, N.C., she was the daughter of Arthur and Lillian Powell Lester.
She was married to Fred Curvington, who predeceased her.
Survivors include one son, Angelo Curvington of Danville.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the chapel of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home, 707 Wilson St.
The family will receive friends Friday at 1010 Adams St.
Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.

Theresa Davis

DANVILLE, Va. - Theresa Hopkins Davis, 43, of 536 Hughes St. died Thursday, April 12, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 19, 1957, she was the daughter of Marvin Daniel Hopkins and Imojean Pizzino Hopkins, who survive.
She spent most of her life in Danville, where she was on disability. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors, in addition to her parents, include one daughter, Yavonne Hopkins White of Ringgold; one son, Steve Edward Hopkins Jr. of Danville; one brother; one sister; and two grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Hylton Lawrence Jr. officiating. The interment will be private.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Sable Hopkins Scholarship Fund, c/o Peoples National Bank.

Ruth DeHart

DANVILLE, Va. - Ruth Davis DeHart, 79, of 429 Arlington Road, died Monday, April 9, 2001 at the Stratford Healthcare Center.
Mrs. DeHart was born on June 26, 1921 in Gastonia, N.C. the daughter of Clarence Davis and Dora Davis.
She was married to Robert Dempsey DeHart who predeceased her on August 31, 1992.
Mrs. DeHart was a member of Schoolfield Baptist Church. She worked for 27 years and was retired from the Dan River Research Division.
She is survived by one son, Robert “Donnie” DeHart and his wife Karen of Danville, three sisters, Hilda Hundley of Stoneville, N.C.; Irene Broome of Gastonia, N.C. and Harlston Byrd of Danville; three brothers, Joe Davis, Herman Davis and Ralph Davis all of Gastonia, N.C.; one granddaughter, Michelle "Shelly" Edwards and her husband Victor, one great grandson, Bradley Edwards and one great granddaughter, Christina Edwards, all of Danville.
Mrs. DeHart was predeceased by a sister, Lucille Turner.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, April 12, 2001, at 11:00 a.m., at Mountain View cemetery. Rev. David Turbyfill will be conducting the service.
The family will receive friends at her son’s residence at 3572 Westover Drive.
Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
In Lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Danville Life Saving Crew.

Elizabeth Edmonds

DANVILLE, Va. - Elizabeth Ann Edmonds, 62, of 261 Garfield St. died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 2, 1938, in Caswell County, N.C., she was the daughter of John Wesley Poole and Addie Pinchback Poole.
She was married to Willie Edmonds, who survives. She was employed at the Hatcher Center prior to her illness and was a member of the Liberty Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include one sister, Dorothy Pointer of Danville; and one brother, John Poole of Danville.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Monday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home chapel, with the Rev. Jasper Watkins officiating. Interment icon will follow at Floral Hill Memory Gardens cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 261 Garfield St.
Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Irene Fitzgerald

CHATHAM, Va. - Irene Rose Fitzgerald, 96, of 327 White St., died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at Avante Nursing Home in Roanoke.
Born Oct. 17, 1904, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Fred Hodnett and Mary Edwards Hodnett.
She was married to Fred Fitzgerald, who predeceased her. She was a homemaker and member of the First Baptist Church in New Jersey.
Survivors include two daughters, Nellie Davis of Chatham and Marie Ransome of New Jersey; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Cherrystone Baptist Church with the Rev. Floyd Jones officiating. Interment icon will follow at the church cemetery.
Miller Funeral Home, Gretna, will be in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth Hall

DANVILLE, Va. - Elizabeth Joan Taylor Hall, 54, of 209 Scales St., died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 26, 1946, in Danville, she was the daughter of Ivey Austin Taylor, who predeceased her, and Frances Wilson Taylor, who survives.
She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors, in addition to her mother of Danville, include one son, Robert L. Hall of Danville; one daughter, Patsy Ann Hall of Danville; two brothers, Jr. Taylor of Richmond and Harold Taylor of Oxford, N.C.; three sisters, Hazel Taylor of Roxboro, N.C., Linda Gibbs and Patricia Wilford, both of Danville; one half sister, Betty Tipton of Danville; and two grandchildren.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Claude Bailey officiating. Interment icon will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will be receiving friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Barker Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
Barker Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.

George Hite

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. -George William Hite, 63, of 1036 Wolf Trap Road, died Monday, April 9, 2001, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born July 13, 1937, in Mecklenburg County, he was the son of Clyde Hite Sr., who predeceased him, and Evannah Buchannan Hite, who survives.
He was married to Dorothy Smith Hite, who survives. He worked for Rochester Button until his retirement and was a member of Buffalo Baptist Tabernacle.
Survivors, in addition to his mother of Louisburg, N.C., and his wife of South Boston, include one daughter, Jean H. Clay of South Boston; one sister, Judy H. Murray of Oxford, N.C.; one half-brother, Clyde Hite of South Boston; one half-sister, Martha Ann Hite of South Boston; and one granddaughter.
He was predeceased, in addition to his father, by one brother, Thomas Ray Hite.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at North Fork Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill LaWall officiating. Interment icon will follow at North Fork Baptist Church cemetery in Virgilina.
Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Brooks Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
Brooks Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.

Bobbie Hopkins

MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Bobbie Carolyn Layell Hopkins, 67, of Blue Ridge Rehab Center, formerly of Danville, died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at Martinsville-Henry County Memorial Hospital.
Born June 3, 1933, in Hanes, N.C., she was the daughter of Samuel Gordon Layell and Annie Ethel Simmons Layell.
She attended North Main Baptist Church.
She lived most of her life in Danville.
She resided at the Blue Ridge Rehab Center in Martinsville for the past two years.
Survivors include two sons, A. Wade Hopkins of Ringgold and William A. Hopkins Jr. of Roanoke; five sisters, Margie L. Young, Elise L. Stout and Josephine L. Twilley, all of Dry Fork, Kathleen L. Moser of Shalimar, Fla., and Jessie L. Garner of Charlotte, N.C.; and four grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by one brother, Lloyd E. Layell
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Highland Burial Park, with the Rev. Jeff Geisel officiating.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts, North Main chapel.
The family suggests that memorials be made to the Patients Special Donation Fund of the Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute, 382 Taylor Drive, Danville, Va., 24541.

Suzanne Leggett

DANVILLE, Va. - Suzanne Holland Leggett of Danville, Va., died early Wednesday morning at her residence on the family farm.
She was born December 7, 1907, in Danville, Va., a daughter of Asa Thomas and Sue Howard Holland. She attended Converse College, South Carolina, and completed a degree in education at Longwood College in Farmville, Va.
Mrs. Leggett was predeceased by her husband, Fred Bennett Leggett, and her granddaughter, Joan Wynne Leggett. She was a member of The First Presbyterian Church of Danville.
In addition to her two children, Fred Bennett Leggett Jr. and Sue Howard Leggett Miller, she is survived by a sister, Jane Holland Heard, a sister-in-law, Peggy H. Holland, six grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
Graveside services, conducted by Rev. Jack Heinsohn, Jr., were held at Mountain View cemetery on April 12, 2001.
