Jerry Logan
CHATHAM, Va. - Jerry Lee Logan, 73, of 1469 Moses Mill Road died Thursday night, April 12, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 23, 1927, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Alvin Patton and Irene Woodson Logan, who predeceased him.
He was married
to Virginia Logan, who survives.
He was a retired employee of the Pittsylvania County School Board and also a retired employee of Chatham Oil Co. He was a member of the New Life Apostolic Holiness Church in Callands.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include two sons, Lee M. Logan of Blairs and Garry W. Logan of Danville; seven daughters, Lillie M. Carter, Ethel M. Harvey, Brenda G. McKenzie, Jennifer Halstead and Anita H. Logan, all of Chatham, Cheryl Perkins of Gretna and Joyce L. Logan, of Java; one brother, John A. Logan of Craigsville; five sisters, Sarah Pannell, Jennie Witcher and Veanus I. Thompson, all of Chatham, Elizabeth Lanier of Danville and Frances Williams of Waterburg, Conn.; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Cecil Logan and Alvin Junior Logan.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Monday at the New Life Apostolic Holiness Church, with the Bishop Charlie Witcher Sr. officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.
The family is at the residence, 1469 Moses Mill Road, and also at the residence of a daughter, Joyce Logan, 9280 Halifax Road, Java, Va.

Nannie Logan
DANVILLE, Va. - Nannie Elizabeth Logan, 62, of 314 Smith St. died Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 12, 1938, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Roosevelt and Louise Edmonds.
She was married
to Fred A. Logan Sr., who survives.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two daughters, Melissa Cosby and Freida Martin, both of Danville; one son, Fred A. Logan Jr. of Collinsville; two sisters, Rosa Walker and Florence Lipford, both of Danville; and one brother, Willie Edmonds of Danville.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Shiloh Baptist Church, 901 Betts St., with the Rev. Cecil Bridgeforth Sr. officiating.
The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Melissa Cosby, 600 Ingram St.

Gladys Matherly
GRETNA, Va. - Gladys Irby Matherly, 80, of 129 North Franklin Blvd. died Thursday, April 12, 2001, at her residence.
Born July 26, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Marion F. Irby and Carrie Roach Irby. She was a member of the Gretna Christian Church and a retired cafeteria worker with the Pittsylvania County School System.
She was married
to Clarence B. Matherly, who survives.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include three daughters, Patsy Emerson and Phyllis Phillips, both of Altavista, and Betty Bentley of Hickory, N.C.; two brothers, Toye Irby of Greensboro, N.C., and Oscar Irby of Portsmouth; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her foster parents, Bill and Annie Saunders.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Colbert-Moran Chapel, with the Rev. R.G. Rowland and the Rev. Charles Ellis officiating. Interment
will follow at Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Thomas Owen
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Thomas Webster Owen, 82, of 1307 Friend Ave., South Boston, died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Jan. 12, 1919, in Halifax County, he was the son of William Beverly Owen and Annie Mae Williamson Owen.
He was married
to Elizabeth McCrary Owen, who survives. He was a member of First Baptist Church and was a vice president and 37-year employee of Sovran Bank.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include one daughter, Ann O. Ozmer of Sutherlin; one son, Harry W. Owen of Sutherlin; one sister, Nixie O. Thompson of Sutherlin; and one grandson.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Bob Fox officiating. Interment
will follow at Oak Ridge cemetery.
The family will be receiving friends at the residence.
The family suggests memorials may be made to the South Boston-Halifax County Museum of Fine Arts and History.

Maggie Pearsall
NEW YORK, N.Y. - Maggie Katheren Pearsall, of 515 West 150 St., died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at the residence.
Born Oct. 7, 1924, in West Virginia, she was the daughter of Henry Lenard Henderson and Mary E. Jones Henderson.
She was a member of Salvation and Deliverance Holiness Church in New York and was an employee at Supreme Hand Laundry Inc. before her retirement.
Survivors include one sister, Lou Henry Gunn of Pelham, N.C.; and one foster son, Larry McCroskey of New York.
The memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Fulton Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Everett Dickerson officiating. Interment
will follow at Blackwell Baptist Church cemetery.

Wayne Reese
ATHENS, Ga. - Wayne Dickerson Reese, 58, died April 5, 2001.
Born Sept. 4, 1942, in Halifax County, Va., he was the son of John Robert Reese and Cecile Coates Reese.
Survivors include two sons, Wayne Dickerson Reese Jr. of Butner, N.C., Capt. Michael Thomas Reese of Wright-Patterson A.F.B., Ohio; four sisters, Rubey Reese Rickman and Kathleen Reese Irby, both of Lynchburg, Va., Bobbie Reese Hill and Anne Reese Moorefield, both of Nathalie, Va.; two brothers, James P. Reese of Nathalie, Va., and William H. Reese of Gretna, Va.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by three brothers, Robert Earl Reese, Kenneth Edward Reese and John Bernard Reese.
The memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Saturday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Don Cocke officiating. Interment
will be private.

Dorothy Saunders
DANVILLE, Va. - Dorothy Taylor Saunders, age 74, formerly of 133 Brook Circle, Westover Hills, died early Friday morning April 13, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been a patient for the last 6 years at Riverside Health Care Center.
Mrs. Saunders was born in Martinsville on October 1, 1926, a daugher of the late Archie Edward Taylor and Myrtle Hyler Taylor.
She married
Dodon "Hap" Saunders in 1947 who died October 20, 1982. Mrs. Saunders was a graduate of Spencer Penn High School in Spencer, and had lived all of her married
life in the Westover Hills community. She was in charge of the shoe department at Thalhimers for 25 years, and also worked in the gift shop at Danville Regional Medical Center for a number of years. She was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church and also the U.M.W. Circle #3 of the church.
Survivors include one daughter and son in law: Beverly Saunders White and Billy S. White of Dry Fork, and one grandchild: William Saunders White, and sisters in law: Patty S. Brooks, Hattie B. Saunders, Edna S. Davis and her husband Henry Davis, Mary S. Hyler and her husband Howard Hyler, and Elinor T. Draper.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Andy Taylor, Curtis Taylor, and Howell Taylor.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. O. H. Burton and Rev. Linwood Daniel. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday evening from 7:00 - 8:00 P.M., and at other times at the residence of Hattie B. Saunders, at 1702 Blair Loop Road.
Dorothy Simpson
DANVILLE, Va. - Dorothy Carter Simpson, 89, of 675 Holland Road died Thursday, April 12, 2001, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born Dec. 6, 1911, in Prince William County, she was the daughter of Richard T. Carter and Ella Leonard Carter, who predeceased her.
She was married
to Joseph B. Simpson, who predeceased her April 19, 1976. She had lived in the Danville area since 1950 and was a resident at Riverside Health Care Center since 1994. Before moving to the Danville area, she was employed as a nurse in Crownsville, Md. She was a member of State Line Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Jolene Arnold of Pelham, N.C., and Patricia Brown of Vass, N.C.; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by one son, Jackson A. Simpson; and one sister, Paulene Lawler.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Swicegood Chapel, with the Rev. Wayne Wallace and the Rev. Fred Cox officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

William Sizemore
GAITHERSBURG, Md. - William Thomas Sizemore, 45, of Gaithersburg, and fomerly of South Boston, Va., died Tuesday, April 10, 2001.
Born in South Boston, Va., on March 24, 1956, he was the son of Richard Jordan Sizemore and Jeanne Bodie Sizemore, who survives.
He was married
to Susan Sizemore, who survives.
He was a member of the Baptist faith and the IEEE. In addition, he was an officer with the Parent-Teacher-Student Association in Gaithersburg.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of Gaithersburg and his mother of South Boston, include one son, Cameron Joseph Sizemore of Gaithersburg; one sister, Sally Sizemore Muller of Greensboro, N.C.; and two brothers, R. Macon Sizemore and Daniel Jordan Sizemore, both of Richmond, Va.
Memorial services will be held at a later date. For memorials, the family suggests the First Baptist Church "People of Hope" Campaign of the Christian Childrens Fund.

Matthew Strange
CHARLESTON, S.C. - Matthew Alexander Strange, age 12, of 17 Bull Street, Charleston, S.C., died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C.
He was born on September 5, 1988 in Charleston, S.C., the son of Dr. Charlie Strange and Pam Neagley Strange.
Matthew was a honor student at Buist Academy in Charleston where he was a member of the Beta Club and Tennis Team.
Besides his parents, Matthew is survived by one brother, Robert Strange of Charleston, S.C., his maternal grandparents, Dr. and Mrs. R.L. Neagley of Charleston, S.C., paternal grandparents, Dr. and Mrs. C.B. Strange, Jr. of Danville; maternal great grandmother, Mrs. Ralph Glasser of Bethlehem, PA., and paternal great grandmother, Mrs. George H. Everett of Danville.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 14, 2001, 11:00 A.M. at First Presbyterian Church in Danville. Rev. Jack Heinsohn will be conducting the services.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Dr. and Mrs. C.B. Strange, Jr. at 2050 Ferry Road.

James Walker
CHATHAM, Va. - James Eldrin Walker, 80, of 2244 Hawkins Road, died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born May 31, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Sam Walker and Mamie Harris Walker.
He was married
to Christine Kessler Walker, who survives. He was a member of Mill Creek Baptist Church, a charter member of the Chatham Rescue Squad, a lifetime member of V.F.W. Post No. 5309, and was a World War II veteran and in the United States Navy for 12 years. He served on the U.S.S. Missouri during the Korean War. He was co-owner and operator of Walker Electrical Repair until his retirement.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include three sons, Ronald D. Walker, Daniel L. Walker and Michael E. Walker, all of Chatham; five sisters, Ruth W. Girardin, Cluster W. Mayhew, Vivian Walker, Audrey W. Bliss and Jean W. Moser, all of Danville; two brothers, Acie Walker of Chatham and Warren Walker of Ringgold; two grandchildren, three step grandchildren and three step great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by three sisters, Mary Harris, Virginia Milam and Carlton Droog; and two brothers, Aubrey Walker and Joe Walker.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Mill Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. James Bullock Jr. officiating. Interment
will follow at Chatham Burial Park with military honors being performed by the American Legion Post 1097.
