Ralph Williams
DANVILLE, Va. - Ralph Lee Williams, 56, of 237 Williams Drive, died Monday, April 9, 2001, at the Durham Regional Hospital in Durham, N.C.
Born June 18, 1944, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Willie James Williams and Pauline Brandon Williams.
He was married
to Linda Johnson Williams, who survives. He worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company for many years before his retirement due to disability. He was a member of the Hackberry Baptist Church in Sutherlin and was a Mason of the Grand Lodge of Virginia 17th Masonic District.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include seven sisters, Naomi Rodgers of Sutherlin, Annie Pritchett and Joyce Ward, both of Philadelphia, Pa., Laverne McClary of Eden, N.C., Lois Graves of Milton, N.C., and Hilda Withers and Jeraline Williams, both of Danville; and one brother, Gene Williams Sr. of Blairs.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Hackberry Baptist Church with the Rev. Rufus Fuller III officiating. Interment
will follow at Floral Hills Memory Garden.
The family will be receiving friends at the residence.

Rome Womack Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Rome Malachi Womack Jr., 76, of 418 North Woodberry Ave., died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born Aug. 22, 1924, in Elberton, Ga., he was the son of Rome M. Womack Sr. and Vera Seymour Womack.
He was married
to Ruth Risse Womack, who survives. He was a World War II veteran, having participated in the Normandy invasion on Omaha Beach on D-Day. He lived in Danville since 1952, where he was store manager for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. He was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include one daughter, Vera Womack Kast of South Boston; one son, Jerome V. Womack of Danville; one sister, Mabel W. Walker of Laurens, S.C.; one half brother, Karl H. Stamer of Danville; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Ascension Lutheran Church with Pastor Caldwell N. Day officiating. Interment
will be private. The family will be receiving friends at the church following the service, and at other times at the residence.

Sallie Woods
DANVILLE, Va. - Sallie H. Woods, 94, of 899 Luna Lake Road, died Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 30, 1906, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Colonel N. Hodges and Lou Hammock Hodges.
She worked at Dan River Inc. as a weaver until her retirement and was of the Baptist faith.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by three sisters, Lizzie Hodges, Bessie Hodges, and Ethel Hodges; and four brothers, Nathanial Hodges, Scott Hodges, Oscar Hodges and Herman Hodges.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Claude Bailey officiating.
The family will be receiving friends at the residence.

Douglas Anderson
BLAIRS, Va. - Douglas Anderson, 66, of 465 Pritchett Lane, died Monday, April 16, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 12, 1934, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Jessie and Pattie Fitzgerald Anderson.
He was married
to Amanda Anderson, who survives.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three daughters, Patricia Pritchett of Danville, Shamanda Anderson and Teresa Anderson, both of the residence; two sons, Michael Anderson of Danville and Kevin Anderson of the residence; three sisters, May Glass of South Boston, Sallie Hubbard of Dry Fork and Katie Lee Anderson of Newark, N.J.; two brothers, William Anderson of South Boston and Freddy Anderson of Blairs.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Friday at White Oak Grove Baptist Church in Dry Fork, with the Rev. Edward Pope officiating. Interment
will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens cemetery.

Bessie Bailey
DANVILLE, Va. - Bessie F. Bailey of 1849 Mill Creek Road, died Saturday, April 14, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 13, 1917, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of George Fitzgerald and Carrie Price Fitzgerald.
She was married
to Frank Bailey, who predeceased her. She worked for Dan River Mills as a maid and was a member of Mill Creek Baptist Church, Jollyetts and Womens Auxiliary of American Legion Post No. 29.
Survivors include one son, Wayne Bailey of Danville; one daughter, Frankie Bailey of Guilderland, N.Y.; and one sister, Catherine Holt of Danville.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mill Creek Baptist Church, with the Rev. Anthony Noble officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
Viewing will be held 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home. The family will be at the residence of Catherine Holt, 1512 Mount Cross Road.

Roosevelt Barksdale
ELIZABETH, N.J. - Roosevelt Barksdale, 68, of 69 Fifth St., formerly of Java, Va., died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at Elizabeth General Hospital.
Born May 18, 1932, in Pittsylvania County, Va., he was the son of Thomas Barksdale and Margaret Grasty Barksdale.
He was married
to Lois Ellis Barksdale, who predeceased him. At an early age, he was baptized and joined the Riceville Baptist Church in Java, Va.
Survivors include three brothers, William Henry Barksdale of Rozell, Stonewall Barksdale of Washington, D.C. and Herman Barksdale of Java, Va., and two sisters, Mildred Hankins of Virginia Beach, Va. and Sarah Hamm of Danville, Va.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents and wife, by four brothers, Fletcher, George, Woodrow and Willie Barksdale and two sisters, Mary Adams and Ruby Fitzgerald.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Riceville Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronnie Walker officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will be at the residence of Fred Hodnett, 9024 Chalk Level Road, Gretna, Va.

Herman Bowman
WASHINGTON, D.C. -Herman Andrew Bowman, 58, formerly of Danville, Va., died Thursday, April 12, 2001, following a lengthy illness.
Born April 17, 1942, he was the son of George King and Bessie Bowman Graves.
Survivors include his step-mother, Lovelene King; three sisters, Betty Graves Roach and Patricial Williamson, both of Danville and Doris Mebine of Washington, D.C. and two brothers, William Graves of Maryland and Billy Graves of Greensboro, N.C.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by his step-father, James R. Graves and one brother, Johnny Dee Graves.
The funeral will be held Saturday in Washington, D.C.

NATHALIE, Va. - Jane Dennis Boyd, 51, died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at the residence.
Survivors include two sisters, Virginia Forest and Queen Jennings, both of Nathalie and one brother, David Dennis of Nathalie.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Ellis Creek Baptist Church in Nathalie with the Rev. Rodney Forrest officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.
A viewing will be held 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Clarence Bradley Jr.
NEW CASTLE, Del. - Clarence Conway Bradley Jr., 80, of 147 Casimir Drive, died Saturday, April 14, 2001, of an apparent heart attack.
Born Oct. 31, 1920, in Danville, Va., he was the son of Clarence Conway Bradley Sr. and Sara Collie Bradley.
He was married
July 22, 1956, to Eunice Willis Bradley, who survives. He was employed with Texaco for 30 years before his retirement. He was educated in Danville Public Schools and attended V.P.I. He was a member of the masonic lodge, Shriners and St. Luke’s United Methodist Church. He was a veteran of the United States Navy during World War II.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include one sister, Geneva Bradley Newman of Danville, Va.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Dr. David J. Palmer officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will be receiving friends 10:30-11 a.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and other times at the home of Geneva Newman, 173 Oakwood Circle, Danville, Va.

Dora Busby
DANVILLE, Va. - Dora Mae Swift Busby, formerly of 333 Bell Drive, died Saturday, April 14, 2001, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after two years of declining health.
Born Jan 16, 1928, in Johnson City, Tenn., she was the daughter of William Clinton Swift and Ora Noonkester Swift.
She was married
to Lonnie V. Busby, who predeceased her March, 8, 1988. She was a graduate of Schoolfield High School and lived in Danville most of her life where she was a homemaker. She was a member of First Church of the Brethren.
Survivors include two sons, Johnny Holt of Dry Fork and Lonnie "Buz" Busby II of Brosville; two daughters, Linda Busby of Danville and Loretta B. Ellis of Jacksonville, N.C.; one sister, Carrie Lee Smith of Manassas; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Richard Berkley officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will be receiving friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and other times at the residence of Linda Busby, 1701 Ridgecrest Drive, in the Mount Hermon community.

McKenzie Coates Sr.
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - McKenzie Coates Sr., 62, of 241 North New Jersey Ave., formerly of Chatham, Va., died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at the residence.
Born Aug. 7, 1938, in Pittsylvania County, Va., he was the son of Helen Coates, who predeceased him, and Sam Coates, who survives.
He worked for Holiday Inn in Atlantic City and was a veteran of the United States Army.
Survivors, in addition to his father, include one son, McKenzie Coates Jr. of Chatham, Va., one daughter, Augusta Younger of Chatham, Va.; and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at the Howerton Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Tucker officiating. Interment
will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Burial Park.
