William Coles
DANVILLE, Va. - William W. Coles, 91, of 159 Mary Miles Drive, died Monday, April 16, 2001, at the residence following a brief illness.
Born April 10, 1910, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Marshall Coles and Margaret Dodd Coles.
He was married
to Ollie Crews Coles, who predeceased him. He was a retired employee of Dan River, Inc. and Trinity United Methodist Church. He was a deacon at Greater Triumph Missionary Baptist Church. He was the last surviving member of his generation.
Survivors include two sons, Mack A. Coles and Marshall Coles, both of Blairs and four daughters, Jean Moore of Bronx, N.Y., Eunice Coles of the residence, Brenda Pounds and Phyllis Moore, both of Danville.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Greater Triumph Missionary Baptist Church with Dr. H.G. McGhee officiating. Interment
will follow at Floral Hills Memory Garden cemetery.
The family will be receiving friends at the residence.

Thomas Collie Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Thomas Mastin Collie, Jr., age 69, of 437 West Main Street, died Saturday evening April 14, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Collie was born in Pittsylvania County on May 11, 1931, a son of the late Thomas Mastin Collie, Sr., and Ethel Dixon Collie.
He was married
to Nancy Spearman Collie who survives.
Mr. Collie was a captain and jet pilot in the U.S. Air Force and was in the Jet Aviation Program where he was one of the first to fly fast as sound while associated with the Mach Busters Club. He served as a flight instructor retiring in 1986. He was a graduate of Virginia Polytechnick Institute with a B.S. in Civil Engineering and was a member of the Highty-Tighties.
He was an Executive Vice Chairman for First Virginia Bank Piedmont and a member of Main Street United Methodist Church where he served as a Sunday School teacher, as a member of the Executive Board and the Board of Trustees. He was a member of the Danville Golf Club, Sons of Confederate Veterans, the German Club, the F86 Sabre Pilots Association, and past member of the Young Men’s Club and Kiwanis Club.
Survivors in addition to his wife of the residence include one daughter and son in law: Deane Collie Beard and Robert F. Beard of Culpepper, and two sons: Thomas Mastin Collie, III, of Atlanta, Georgia, and James E. Collie, and daughter in law Meg O’Connell Collie of Alexandria, and three grandchildren: Emily Collie Beard, Nancy Collie Beard, and Avigail Beard Hatfield, and one uncle: Linwood Dixon, and a number of cousins, nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Main Street United Methodist Church by the Rev. Gary Milstead. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park. Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

James Comer
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - James William Comer, 80, of 621 Berry Hill Road, died Friday, April 13, 2001 at Berry Hill Nursing Home.
Born March 19, 1921 in Halifax County, he was the son of Richard Henry Comer and Hettie Talley Comer.
He was a member of Dan River Baptist Church.
Survivors include two brothers, Fauntly D. Comer of South Boston and Richard Comer of Harve-Grace, Md.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Dan River Baptist Church with the Rev. Paul King officiating. Interment
will follow at Grace Baptist Church cemetery in Virgilina.
The family will be receiving friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Brooks Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of Fauntly Comer, 2092 Dan River Church Road, in South Boston.

Elizabeth Crews
NATHALIE, Va. - Elizabeth Conner Crews, 83, of 1132 Cody Road, died April 19, 2001, at the residence.
Born March 23, 1918, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Fountain C. Conner and Leona Foster Conner.
She was married
to Henry Richard Crews and was a member of First Baptist Church of Republican Grove. She graduated from Longwood State Teachers College and taught in the Halifax County School system for 39 years, having taught in Buffalo, Perth, Repbulican Grove, Volens and Sydnor Jennings Schools. She was a member of the North Halifax V.F.D. Auxillary Quilting Ladies.
Survivors include two grandchildren; one great-grandson; one sister, Ruby Conner Newton of Nathalie and one brother, Hampton Kent Conner Sr. of Takoma Park, Md.
The funeral will be held 3 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church of Republican Grove with the Rev. Shelton Miles officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will be receiving friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Powell Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Zula Criner
MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Zula Q. Criner, 89, of Martinsville, died Monday, April 16, 2001, at Blue Ridge Rehab in Martinsville.
Survivors include one daughter, Gerelene Marshall of Danville; two grandsons; one great-grandson; and one brother, Genious Quesenberry of Texas.
The graveside service will be held noon Wednesday at Cox cemetery in Dugspur.
The family will receive friends 10-11 a.m. Wednesday at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Funeral Home Chapel.

Verna Davidson
GRETNA, Va. - Verna Oakes Davidson, 96, of Autumn Care of Altavista, formerly of Gretna, died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born May 25, 1904, in Danville, she was the daughter of David W. Oakes and Ella Watson Oakes.
She was married
to Beverly E. Davidson, who predeceased her. She was a member of Greenfield Baptist Church for over 50 years and was a homemaker.
Survivors include three sons, E. Waverly Davidson of Altavista, Herman Davidson of Chatham and Carroll Davidson of Gretna; one daughter, Betty Keesee of Mobile, Ala.; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by four brothers, Arnette Oakes, Harry Oakes, Percy Oakes and Horatio Oakes.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, at Colbert-Moran Chapel with the Rev. R.G. Rowland officiating. Interment
will follow at Liberty Memorial cemetery.

James Davis
CHATHAM, Va. - James "Squeeky" Davis, 81, of 19040 U.S. Highway 29 North, died Friday, April 20, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 28, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Samuel Wadie Davis and Elsie Clark Davis.
He was married
to Cora Crews Davis, who survives. He was a retired employee of Woodfins Pharmacy in Chatham, having served 50 years. He was a member of Cherrystone Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, includes one son, James Wayne Davis of Yorktown; one daughter, Barbara Harris of Factoryville, Pa.; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by one brother, Lewis Wadie Davis.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Cherrystone Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Floyd O. Jones officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will be receiving friends 7-9 p.m. Monday at the church and other times at the residence.

Theresa Davis
DANVILLE, Va. - Theresa Hopkins Davis, 43, of 536 Hughes St. died Thursday, April 12, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 19, 1957, she was the daughter of Marvin Daniel Hopkins and Imojean Pizzino Hopkins, who survive.
She was married
to William Thomas Davis Jr., who survives. She spent most of her life in Danville, where she was on disability. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors, in addition to her husband and parents, include one daughter, Yavonne Hopkins White of Ringgold; one son, Steve Edward Hopkins Jr. of Danville; one brother; one sister; and two grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Hylton Lawrence Jr. officiating. The interment will be private.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Stuart Eanes Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Stuart Edward Eanes Sr., 78, of 1644 Whispering Pines Road died Friday, April 20, 2001, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Salem, after a 10-year decline in health and five weeks in the hospital.
Born May 5, 1922, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Archer Thomas Eanes and Nora Mae Keatts Eanes.
He was married
to Elmittie Coble Eanes, who survives. He was a disabled veteran of the United States Navy during World War II and spent most of his life in the Brosville community of Pittsylvania County. He attended Brosville High School and worked for Dan River Inc. for a number of years, later working for the City of Danville School Board as a supervisor of maintenance. He was a life member of Chapter 19 Disabled American Veterans, a life member of the V.F.W. Ballard Pruitt Post No. 647 and a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include one daughter, Doris Eanes Wilkerson of Danville; two sons, Jimmy Ray Eanes Sr. of Brosville and Stuart Edward Eanes Jr. of Indian Head, Md.; one sister, Thelma Bray of Danville; one brother, Thurman Eanes of Danville; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by one son, Bobby Ray Eans; and three brothers, J.D. Eanes, Irvin Eanes and Burton Eanes.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Eanes Family cemetery on Whispering Pines Road with the Rev. J.B. Baldridge and the Rev. Aubrey Dewberry officiating. Military honors will be performed by the American Legion Dan River Post No. 1097 Honor Guard.

Johnie Ann Farmer
DANVILLE, Va. - Johnie Ann Riddle Farmer of Brantley Place died suddenly April 20, 2001, in Danville Regional Medical Center after two weeks in the hospital.
Born July 13, 1930, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of the late John Riddle and the late Elsie Shields Riddle.
She was married
to Kermit G. Farmer on Nov. 26, 1951. Mrs. Farmer had lived all of her life in Pittsylvania County and Danville. She was a graduate of the former Spring Garden High School and a graduate of Averett College. She was employed by Blackwell Dodge for over 20 years as a bookkeeper prior to leaving to become a homemaker. She was a member of the former Southall Baptist Church and she attended Timberlake Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include daughters, Susan F. Dooley, Elsie Ann Farmer, Nancy F. Phelps and Vicky L. Farmer, all of Danville; sons, John K. Farmer of Danville, Larry W. Farmer, of Danville; a daughter-in-law, Vera G. Farmer of Danville; a son, Timothy R. Farmer of Danville; one sister, Dorothy R. Durham of Danville; five grandchildren, Sherri Lynn Farmer, Brian Wayne Farmer, Johnnie Lee Dooley, Carolyn Ann Phelps and Christopher Scott Farmer. She was survived by several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by three sisters, Virginia R. Edmunds, Nell R. Lynch and Barbara R. Hughes.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday, April 23, from the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Reverend Walter Yancey. Interment
will follow in Highland Burial Park.

Gloria Floyd
DANVILLE, Va. - Gloria Nichols Floyd, 75, of 144 Gloucester Ave., died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 10, 1925, in the Bachelor’s Hall community of Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Myrtle Scearce Nichols.
She was married
to James Hank Floyd, who survives. She lived most of her life in Danville, where she was a homemaker and mother. She was a former member of West Main Baptist Church and was a member of the Eastern Star.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include two daughters, Carol Diane Floyd of Danville and Susan Floyd Bennett of Dry Fork; one son, Jimmy Floyd of Danville; one sister, Frances Hundley of Knoxville, Tenn. and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
