Lewis Gregory
MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Lewis Bernley Gregory, 86, died Sunday morning at King’s Grant Retirement Community.
He was a retired executive of Bassett-Walker Knitting Co., which later became part of VF Corp.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at McKee Funeral Home by the Rev. Lewis Harris and Dr. Calvin Raines. Burial will follow in Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Gregory is survived by two daughters, Dr. Myra Gregory Knight of Durham, N.C., and Kathy Gregory Bell of Alexandria; two sons-in-law, Dr. Josiah D. Knight of Durham, and Lt. Col. Ret. Thomas S. Bell of Alexandria; and one grandson, Walker Madison Knight of Durham.
He also is survived by one sister, Mrs. Bernice Craddock of Collinsville; and four brothers, Mr. Harold "Sonny" Gregory of Collinsville; Mr. Earl Gregory of Chatham; Mr. Giles Gregory of Dry Fork; and Mr. Milton Gregory of Ringgold. Survivors also include more than 25 nieces and nephews, several grandnieces and grandnephews, and other extended family.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Evelyn Walker Gregory; his parents, P. Lester and Rebecca Grant Gregory; two sisters, Vivian Gregory Clark and Anna Gregory Powell; and three brothers, Ray Gregory, Frank Gregory, and Paige Gregory.
Mr. Gregory was born on a tobacco farm in Henry County, but moved to Pittsylvania County as a child. He graduated from Callands High School in 1933.
He was employed by Bassett-Walker Knitting Co. in a variety of capacities for more than 50 years. He was named plant superintendent in the early 1960s and oversaw the company’s move from its location on Cleveland Avenue to a larger site on Rivermont Heights Extension. He helped put in place new OSHA standards for worker safety and EPA standards for smokestack emissions.
He was among the first members of McCabe Memorial Baptist Church, where he and the late Mrs. Gregory were married
in 1940. He was a deacon of the church and for many years sang tenor in the church choir. As a young man, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and raising game birds, including pheasants and Cornish hens. Later, he developed a passion for flower and vegetable gardening. His roses and daffodils won many awards in local competitions. He owned two homes in Martinsville, the first at 201 Greyson St., and the second, at 1712 Mulberry Road. He and Mrs. Gregory celebrated their 50th anniversary in 1990. She died in 1993.
George Hamlett Jr.
HURT, Va. - George Dewey Hamlett Jr., 78, of 133 Perdue Dr., died Friday, April 13, 2001, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born April 28, 1922, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of George D. Hamlett Sr. and Janie Woodall Hamlett.
He was married
to Louise Reynolds Hamlett, who survives. He worked for Nick's Electronics and more recently was self-employed in C.B. sales and service at his shop in Motley. He was an avid user of C.B. and was known as "Petty Blue" and "Chipmunk." He was a member of NASCAR and raced locally in the early 1950s. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II and was a member of Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include one daughter, Susan Buckner of Eden, N.C.; one grandson; two sisters, Pauline H. Osborne of Altavista and Madeline H. Johnson of Hurt; one brother, Eugene Hamlett of Altavista; step-mother, Mary Elizabeth Hamlett of Hurt; five step-children and five step-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by two brothers, Harry Hamlett and Melvin Hamlett and one sister, Blanche Hamlett.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church with the Rev. M. Dana Hunt officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will be receiving friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Finch and Finch Funeral Home in Altavista and other times at the residence.

Mark Hampton Jr.
CASCADE, Va. - Mark Hampton Jr., 50, of 341 Apostolic Drive died Wednesday, April 18, 2001.
He was married
to Ruby H. Hampton, who survives.
He was a native of Pittsylvania County and was a member of Greater Bible Way Holiness Church.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two daughters, Tonya L. Hampton of Cascade and Pattie L. Broadnax of Stoneville; his mother, Nellie Frances Hampton of Axton; four brothers, George Hampton of Eden, N.C., Michael Hampton and Donald Hampton of Danville and Ricky Hampton of Cascade; five sisters, Nellie A. Watkins, Molly L. Hampton and Mary A. Hampton, all of Axton, Martha R. Hampton of Danville and Della Brown of Ringgold; one stepson, Michael Hairston of the residence; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Star Of Bethlehem Way Of The Cross Church in Cascade. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will be receiving friends 1:30-2 p.m. Monday at the church.

Frances Handy
FAIRFIELD, Calif. - Frances Pinnix Handy, 70, formerly of Danville, Va., died Monday, April 16, 2001, at Kaizer Hospital in Vallejo.
Born May 18, 1930, in Danville, Va., she was the daughter of William B. and Elizabeth Palmer Pinnix.
She was married
April 5, 1953, to Leonard Lee Handy and was a member of West End Christian Church.
She was the original owner of Frances Handy Shoppe, previously located on Old Piney Forest Road.
Survivors include two daughters, Anne B. Evans of Davis and Carolyn Leigh Handy of the residence; one sister, Irene Pinnix Parham of Danville, Va.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by one brother, Shelburne Pinnix.
The memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Stokesland Baptist Church, 130 Taylor St., Danville, Va.

Kenneth Hardy Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Kenneth Ray "Bear" Hardy, Sr., 54, of 2560 Medical Center Road, died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center after four months of declining health and two weeks in the hospital.
Born January 30, 1947, in Danville, he was the son of Percy Hardy and Mary Moxley Hardy.
He was married
September 27, 1991 to Sandra Snead Hardy, who survives, of 2560 Medical Center Road, Danville, Virginia. He attended Calvary Church of Nazerine. He was an Artist and lived his entire life in Danville, Virginia. He was retired due to disability from Dan River Mills, Inc. where he worked as a Boiler Operator.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include one son, Kenneth Ray Hardy, Jr. of Evington, VA; one step-daughter, Dana R. Harville of Dry Fork, VA; one step-son, Robbie W. Moss of Dry Fork, VA; one brother, Richard Wayne Hardy of Danville, VA; one granddaughter, Jessica Nicole Hardy of Reidsville, NC; one step-grandson, Jakob Harville of Dry Fork, VA and one step-granddaughter, Kayla Harville of Dry Fork, VA.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by one son, Steven Wayne Hardy.

Vivian Hardy
GRETNA, Va. - Vivian Brooks Hardy, 72, of Pittsville Road, died Saturday, April 14, 2001, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born Nov. 6, 1928, in Dickerson County, she was the daughter of Arlie Brooks and Alice Shook Brooks.
She was married
to Harold A. Hardy, who predeceased her. She was a homemaker and devoted mother.
Survivors include two sons, Tommy Lynn Hardy and James Hardy, both of Gretna; three daughters, Janice Gibson of Pittsville, Sandra Walden and Beulah Towler, both of Gretna; two brothers, Vernon Brooks of Roanoke and Richard Brooks of Alexandria; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by two brothers, Romie Lee Brooks and Claude Brooks and step-mother Mary Brooks.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Summersett Baptist Church with the Rev. Bert Johnson officiating. Interment
will follow at Weatherford Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.

Patricia Hite
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Patricia Snow Hite, 57, of 3002 Dan River Church Road, died Saturday, April 14, 2001 at the residence.
Born May 12, 1943 in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Luther H. Snow, who survives and Mary Tatum Snow, who predeceased her.
She was married
to Jimmy D. Hite, who survives. She was a partner at Airport Truck and Equipment Sales and was a member of South Boston Church of God where she served as Sunday School teacher, Senior Adult Coordinator, Youth Director and with the state Church of God Youth Camps. She was a volunteer at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Survivors, in addition to her husband and father, both of South Boston, include step-mother, Mabel Snow of South Boston; one daughter, Wanda Hite Thompson of Knoxville, Tenn.; two sons, Timothy Wayne Hite and Thomas Dale Hite, both of South Boston; one sister, Frances S. Jones of South Boston; one brother, Roger Snow of Halifax and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at South Boston Church of God with Dr. Bill Leonard, the Rev. Don Fox and the Rev. Tommy Dale Fuquay officiating. Interment
will follow at Oak Ridge cemetery in South Boston.

Joyce Hoskins
CHATHAM, Va. - Joyce Adams Hoskins, 77, of Route 4, died Saturday, April 21, 2001, at Gretna Health Care Center.
Born April 16, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Willie Vaden "Bill" Adams and Bertha Swain Adams.
She was married
to Maurice T. Hoskins, who predeceased her. She was a member of Hollywood Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Shirley H. Adkins of Chatham; one son, Roger M. Hoskins of Dry Fork; three sisters, Ruth A. Marshall of Florida, Dora Lee A. White of Georgia and Annie Kate A. Clingenpeel of Martinsville; five brothers, Carlos Adams of Lynchburg, Herbert Adams of North Carolina, Clay Adams of Gretna, Johnny Adams of Evington and Delano Adams of Gretna; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by one brother, Douglas Adams.

Alice Moll
DANVILLE, Va. - Alice Gallacher Moll, 87, of 215-K Seminole Trail died Friday, April 20, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center after five years of declining health.
Born March 9, 1914, in Philadelphia, Pa., she was the daughter of Charles M. Gallacher and Alice Doherty Gallacher.
She was married
April 9, 1936, to Charles Harry Moll, who died in 1975. Mrs. Moll had lived in Danville since 1959 and was a past member of the Temple Terrace Womens Club and the VFW Auxiliary. She was a member of St. Lukes United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one son, C. Robert Moll of Danville; one daughter-in-law, Edith W. Moll of Danville; one sister, Matilda May of Long Neck, Del.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by two brothers, Charles M. Gallacher Jr. and Cornwall Gallacher.

Jake Moore
RINGGOLD, Va. - Julius Earl "Jake" Moore, 83, of 341 Barker Road, died Saturday, April 21, 2001, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after four years of declining health.
Born Feb. 5, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Lee Arthur Moore and Lena Yeatts Moore.
He was married
Feb. 19, 1941, to Nellie Lewis Moore, who survives.
He had lived his entire life in Pittsylvania County and prior to his retirement was a tobacco farmer. He had also worked as a tobacco warehouseman. He was a faithful member of the Ringgold Baptist Church and was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, includes one son, Bobby Lee Moore of Ringgold; one daughter, Betty Sue Hughes of Ringgold; four brothers, Edward Lee Moore of Lynchburg, Harry Clyde Moore, Addison C. Moore and Jack G. Moore, all of Chatham; one sister, Mildred M. Hudson of Durham, N.C.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by three brothers, Carlton Hunt Moore, Leslie H. Moore and Robert S. Moore.
