John P. Ryan
CHATHAM, Va. - JOHN P. RYAN 1922-2001
John P. Ryan, former Executive Director of the Delaware County Housing Authority in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, died at his farm in Chatham, Virginia after a long illness. Mr. Ryan distinguished himself as the housing authority’s Director from 1970 to 1984 while overseeing the integration, renovation and modernization of all of the authority’s communities. He was the force behind a particularly innovative and esthetically unique set of family and elderly facilities in Kinder Park for which he received the coveted William C. Bellamy award for Excellence in Design.
Mr. Ryan served in the Medical Corp of the United States Army in both World War II and the Korean Conflict, retiring with twenty years of service. He was past President of the MacDade Optimist Club, Ridley Township, PA and past Commander of the Fox Smith VFW Post 4845, Essington, PA. He served on the Board of Directors and as Secretary of the Eastern Association of Housing Authorities and as First Vice President of the Pennsylvania Association of Housing and Redevelopment Authorities Board of Directors. He was also Chairman of the Board of the Delaware County Head Start Program. In 1984 he retired to farm in Chatham, VA. Recently, he was honored by the Dry Fork Ruritarian Club of Dry Fork, VA for his many years of service to the community.
He was born in Dunham, KY on August 2, 1922, son of Thomas E. Ryan and Myrtle Mullins Ryan. In 1946 he married
Bertha E. Waddell of Chester, PA. His parents, his wife, a sister, Gay K. Long, and a brother, Thomas W. Ryan, predecease him. He is survived by his daughters; Marty Lafarge-Holst of Saunderstown, RI and Cathy Ryan Nevius of Chatham, VA; his grandson, Pier Folger LaFarge; two sisters, Janice Haymore of Danville, VA and Margaret Giles of Dry Fork, VA; and three brothers, Claude Ryan and Joe C. Ryan of Banner, KY, and Billy Ryan of Ashland, KY.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 28 at 10:00 A.M. at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Chatham, VA followed by a funeral service by the Rev. John S. Ruef. The family suggest in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Dry Fork Volunteer Fire Department, 718 Dry Fork Road, Dry Fork, VA 24531. William Satterfield III
HALIFAX, Va. - William Thomas Satterfield III, 14, of 5212 L.P. Bailey Memorial Highway, died April 27, 2001, at Duke University Medical Hospital.
Born Feb. 9, 1987, in Halifax County, he was the son of William Thomas Satterfield Jr. and Diana Glascock Satterfield.
Survivors, in addition to his parents of Halifax, include one sister, Angela Satterfield of Halifax; maternal grandmother, Darlene Mullins of South Boston; paternal grandmother, Dorothy Kinder of Cedar Bluff and maternal great-grandmother Lelia Carson of Richmond.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Mount Vernon Baptist Church with the Rev. Rudolph Jacobs officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Powell Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Norma Jean Henderson, 2116 Paradise Road, Alton.

Minnie Taylor
CHATHAM, Va. - Minnie Peggy Taylor, 86, of Parks Apartments, died Sunday, April 22, 2001, at Stratford Health Care Center in Danville.
Born April 15, 1915, she was the daughter of Giles Grubbs and Minnie Grubbs.
She was married
to Ernest Taylor, who predeceased her. She was a former member of Callands Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Robert Taylor and Henry Taylor, both of Washington, D.C.; two daughters, Margaret Richardson and Evelyn Taylor, both of Baltimore, Md.; one sister, Belle Morrison of Chatham; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Howerton Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Robert Tucker Jr. officiating. Interment
will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Burial Park in Chatham.
Viewing will be held 3-7 p.m. Wednesday at Howerton Funeral Home.

Wesley Thomas
DANVILLE, Va. - Wesley Edward “Sly” Thomas, 49, of 510 Spring St., died Saturday, April 21, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 16, 1951, in Danville, he was the son of Edward Thomas and Georgia Holt Thomas.
He was formerly married
to Shirley Thomas, who survives. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force.
Survivors, in addition to his former wife, include one daughter, Tia Deshawn Thomas of Danville; four sisters, Brenda Thomas, Helen Rice and Nancy Adams, all of Danville and Mary Ann Giles of Woodbridge; two brothers, Wayne Thomas of Mechanicsville and Leonard Thomas Jr. of Ontario, Canada and one grandmother, Minnie Hairston of Danville.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with Bishop Major Hairston officiating.
Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park cemetery.
The family will be receiving friends at the home of Nancy Adams, 125 Andes Drive.

Alpha Tucker
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Alpha Farson Tucker, 83, of 101 Nottingham Drive, died April 24, 2001, at the Woodview.
Born Aug. 22, 1917, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Samuel Thomas Farson and Lottie Smith Farson.
She was married
to Richard Green Tucker Sr. She was a member of Riceville Baptist Church and was former owner of Tucker’s Grocery in Java. She was retired from Leggett’s Department Store.
Survivors include two daughters, Mourine Tucker and Connie Tucker, both of South Boston; one son, Alvin Tucker of South Boston; one step-daughter, Louise Long of Arlington; one step-son, Richard G. Tucker Jr. of Fairfax; one sister, Mozelle Farthing of Danville; two granddaughters, one great-grandson and nine step grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two brothers, James Farson and Basil Farson; two sisters, Irma Reynolds and Perdita Williams and one step-son, Starkey Tucker.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Richard Saunders officiating. Interment
will follow at Halifax Memorial Gardens.

Lynn Turpin
DANVILLE, Va. - James Lynwood "Lynn" Turpin, 86, of Roman Eagle Memorial Home, previously of 222 Howeland Circle, died Saturday, April 28, 2001, at the residence after several years of declining health.
Born Sept. 10, 1914, in Danville, he was the son of Jessie Lee Turpin and Lena Martin Turpin.
He was married
to Lucy Wright Turpin, who predeceased him Jan. 8, 1992, after 56 years of marriage. He lived his entire life in Danville where he retired from 4A Dress and Yarn Salvage after 43 years of service to Dan River Mills Inc. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus organization. He was city tennis champion, state horseshoe champion and state tennis champion in the Golden Olympics held in Richmond. He was also an avid sports fan, excelling in other sports during his lifetime.
Survivors include two daughters, Margaret T. Carter and Barbara T. Shields, both of Danville.
He was predeceased, in addition to his wife and parents, by one sister, Margaret Elizabeth Turpin.
The Funeral Mass will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father David McGuire officiating. Interment
will follow at Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Margaret T. Carter, 256 Oakmont Trail in the Fox Hollow community.

Thomas Womack
CHATHAM, Va. - Thomas C. Womack, 52, of 7021 Halifax Road, died Monday, April 23, 2001, at the residence.
Born April 17, 1949, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Lloyd and Eunice Womack.
He was married
to Ramona Womack, who survives.
He was employed by Commodore Corp. until he became disabled.
He was a member of Mountain Grove Missionary Baptist Church where he served as a member of the Usher Board. He was also a member of 640 Auxiliary Rescue Squad of Java.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include two sons, Anthony Darrell Womack of Greensboro, N.C. and Aaron Dale Womack of Chatham; one brother, Hugh C. Womack of Blairs; two sisters, Edna Coleman of Lynchburg and Nina Johnson of Chatham, and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 12 noon Saturday at the Mountain Grove Missionary Baptist Church with Dr. Arthur E. Crews officiating.
Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
Viewing will be held 3-8 p.m. Friday at the chapel of Howerton Funeral Home.

Timothy Allen
CHATHAM, Va. - Timothy Dale Allen, 42, of Parks Apartment #5B, died Sunday, April 29, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 17, 1958, in Campbell County, he was the son of Callie Allen and Phillip Allen.
Survivors, in addition to his mother of the residence, include two half-sisters, Maggie Irby of Chatham and Delois Atkins of Maryland.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Greater Mt. Zion Temple, Callands, with the Bishop David K. Fuller officiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.

John Ballou
HALIFAX, Va. - John Edward Ballou, 49, of Ball Park Loop, died Sunday, April 29, 2001, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Jan. 25, 1952, in Philadelphia, Pa., he was the son of Robert Ballou and Lottie Wimbush Ballou.
He was married
to Jennie Jones Ballou, who survives.
He was a member of Mountain Grove Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two children, Tania and Joey Ballou; three grandchildren; one brother and three sisters.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at New Zion Baptist Church, 7107 Chatham Road, Nathalie, with the Rev. Willie N. Yancey officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.

Frances Barbour
DANVILLE, Va. - Frances Gibson Barbour, 59, of 1352 Mount Cross Road, died May 3, 2001, at the residence.
Born Aug. 25, 1941, in Danville, she was the daughter of James E. Gibson and Evelyn Jones Gibson.
She was married
to Jerry W. Barbour, who survives. She was of the Baptist faith and worked for Dan River Inc. for 20 years in the sewing room.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include four sons, Steve Pennington, Jerry W. Barbour Jr., Lewis Barbour and Chris Farmer, all of Danville; three daughters, Kimberly Pennington Nunn, Beverley Pennington Erb and Kristie Darnell, all of Danville; two brothers, John Gibson of Laurinburg, N.C. and James Gibson of Danville; one sister, Irene Smith of Daytona Beach, Fla. and 14 grandchildren.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Robert Vermillion officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Barker Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
