Helen Kendrick
DETROIT, Mich. - Helen Green Kendrick, 88, of 17160 Gravier Street, died June 21, 2002, at St. John Macomb Hospital in Detroit. She had been in declining health for the past two years.
Born July 4, 1913 in Danville, Va., she was a daughter of the late John Joseph Green and the late Mae Henrie Smith Green.
She was married to Clinton Kendrick, who died in 1955. Mrs. Kendrick had lived in Danville prior to moving to Detroit where she had lived most of her life as a homemaker. She was of the Christian Faith.
Survivors include two nieces, Susie G. Kendrick and Mary K. Powell and her husband Morris, all of Dry Fork, Va.; and one nephew, Percy C. Kendrick and his wife Carol, of Augusta, Ga.
She was predeceased by her husband and one sister, Sarah Green Kendrick.
A graveside memorial service will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 6, in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Butch Dillinger and the Rev. Jack Oakes.
The family will receive friends 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday night at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel.

Stephen Lillard
LYNCHBURG, Va. - Stephen Allen Lillard, 31, of 1124 Lindsay St., died Sunday, June 30, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center due to an automobile accident on Mount Cross Road.
Born Oct. 8, 1970, in Danville, he was the son of Julian Allen Lillard and Maria Eanes Lillard.
He was married to Gwendolyn Cheryl Lillard, who survives.
He was a graduate of Tunstall High School and had worked as an auto mechanic. He was co-founder of Route 1 Bluegrass Band, which has been a regular on television for five years. He was also a member of the International Blue Grass Music Association and a distributor for Deering Banjo Co. He was a member of Willis Memorial Baptist Church in Cascade.
Survivors include one son, Stephen Clay Lillard of Cascade; paternal grandmother, Lottie Allen Lillard of Cascade; one sister, Julie Lillard of Chester; and two stepchildren, Brooke Ray and John Luke Ray, both of Lynchburg.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Lillard family Cemetery in Cascade.

Sarah Perkins
CASCADE, Va. - Sarah Jane Perkins, 87, of Cascade, died June 30, 2002.
Born Dec. 12, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John and Mary Jane Hairston.
She was a member of Cascade Primitive Baptist Church and a retired farmer.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Cascade Primitive Baptist Church. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

Leonard Setliff
DANVILLE, Va. - Leonard James Setliff, 84, of 201 Setliff Street, died Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health for three years.
Born July 20, 1917 in Danville, he was a son of Willie Joe Setliff and Mary Hutson Setliff.
He was married to Mable Pruitt Setliff, who predeceased him. He was a member of Ferry Road Friends Church and former member of Forest Lawn Baptist Church. He was also a 32 degree Mason and member of Ramah Masonic Lodge. He was the owner and operator of Country Club Diner for many years.
He is survived by one daughter, Barbara Setliff Fowler of Blairs; one son, James "Jimmy" Setliff of Danville; one sister, Lillian Mangrum of Troutville; three brothers, Willie Joe Setliff Jr., Calvin G. Setliff and Eldridge R. Setliff, all of Danville; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Andrew "Andy" Setliff, Howard Setliff and Earl Setliff.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Linwood Hairfield officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

Roy W. Sigmon
CANTON, Ohio - Roy W. Sigmon, 90, of Canton, Ohio, died Monday, July 1, 2002, at his residence following an illness.
Born August 25, 1911, in Rocky Mount, Va., he was the son of Edward Sigmon and Martha Moran Sigmon.
He was married to Alma S. Sigmon, who predeceased him in 1995. He retired from the Ohio Paper Tubes in Canton after 40 years of service.
He is survived by one daughter, Frances Ross of Spokane, Wash.; three sisters, Helen Mauthe of Lakeland, Fla., Mozelle Robinson of Rocky Mount, Va. and Dorothy Buckner of Canton; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his wife, by one son, William Roy Sigmon, one daughter, Gloria S. Thompson, and two sisters.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. John Meadows officiating.
The family will receive friends at the granddaughter's residence, Becky Spencer, 406 Seminole Trail, Danville.

Clara Swift
DANVILLE, Va. - Clara Thompson Swift, age 72, of 221 Franklin Turnpike, died Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at Stratford Health Care Center.
Born December 2, 1929, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Moses T. Thompson and Mary L. Thompson.
She was employed by Country Club Lanes II and later by Professional Pharmacy Snack Bar until her retirement. She was a former member of the After-Five La Sertoma Club of Danville, VA.
She was a member of Forest Lawn Baptist Church and was currently attending Freedom Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Brenda Boswell and husband Harold of Alabama, and Patsy Sheffield and husband Terry of Danville, VA and one son, Gary R. Horsley, SR and wife Janice of Danville, VA. She is also survived by five sisters, Mary Nance, Geneva Fowler, Doris Bailey, Sarah (Jessie) Horsley, Jean Cook, all of Danville, VA.
She was predeceased by one sister, Virgie Mize, and two brothers, Wallace Thompson and Geames (Garnett) Thompson.
She is also survived by five grandchildren, Ray Horsley, Shawn Horsley, Christy Horsley, Melissa Sheffield and Edward Gauldin and wife Sara, and two great-grandchildren, Trent Gauldin and Kaitlyn Horsley.
She is also survived by special former daughter-in-law Diane Sigmon and a special friend, Angie Haymore, mother of Kaitlyn.
Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Friday, July 5 at Swicegood Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Wayne Hall and Rev. Dr. Doug Barber officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

Frederick William ‘Bill' Townes
DANVILLE, Va. - Frederick William "Bill" Townes, III, age 75, of 1111 Main Street, #306, Stratford House, died Tuesday morning, July 2, 2002, at his home.
Born on October 7, 1926, in Danville, Virginia, he was the son of the late Frederick William Townes Jr. and Ruth Carter Townes.
He was married on June 28, 1952, to the former Catherine Susan Wyatt, who survives of the home. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this past Saturday.
He was educated in the Danville Public Schools and was a 1947 graduate of George Washington High School. He attended the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and returned to Danville to begin his career in funeral service with his father, Fred W. Townes Jr., with F. W. Townes and Son, which was founded in 1892 by his grandfather, F. W. Townes Sr. At the time of his death, he was Chairman of the Board.
Mr. Townes was past president of the Virginia Funeral Directors Association.
He was a Veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific with the United States Navy.
Mr. Townes was an active member of the First Baptist Church where he was a former deacon and had chaired and served on various church committees.
He was a Past President of the Danville Jaycees, Past President of the YMCA, where he also served as Chairman of the YMCA Building Committee, Past President and former director of the Danville Kiwanis Club, Past President and former director of the Danville Chamber of Commerce, and former director of the United Way.
He was a former member of the Danville Scottish Rite, ACCA Temple of the Danville Shrine Club, the Elks, Redmen and Knights of Pythias.
Mr. Townes was a former member of the Board of Trustees at Averett College, where he served as general chairman of the Capital Fund Drive in 1982.
He was a member of the Roanoke Valley Power Squadron, the Roman Eagle Lodge, No. 122, A. F. & A. M., the Danville Golf Club, American Legion Post 325, Ducks Unlimited and is current Secretary-Treasurer and past President of Wildwood Fishing Club, Inc.
He served three terms on Danville City Council, served on the Danville Planning Commission and the Danville Development Council. His life long commitment to the City of Danville is evidence by his years of service and his dedication to economic development. He was active in the Danville Life Saving Crew during its early years.
Mr. Townes was an avid sailor and was known as "The Captain" of the Kay-T-Bee. He loved to hunt and fish, and was also a member of the Wildwood Hunt Club.
Mr. Townes had a life long interest for woodworking and was known as a master craftsman having learned from his friend and mentor the late Gary Johnson.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Townes Jordan.
As a loving husband, father and grandfather, he was committed to family first. In addition to his wife, Catherine "Kitty" Townes, he is survived by two sons, Frederick William "B" Townes, IV and his wife Martha of Boomer, N.C., Thomas Wyatt Townes and his wife, Cynthia of Greensboro, N.C.; a daughter, Catherine Townes Richardson and her husband, W. Kim Richardson of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; six grandchildren, Frederick William Townes, V., Charlotte Louise Townes, William Richard Cathcart, Jr., Townes Hagood Richardson, Susannah Wyatt Townes, and Catherine Miller Townes; a nephew, John M. Jordan, Jr.; and a niece, Carter Jordan Thompson.
The family received friends at Townes Funeral Home, Wednesday, July 3, 2002, from 7:00 to 8:30.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 4, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church by the Dr. Joey Faucette. Interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery.

Sarah Wiles
DANVILLE, Va. - Sarah Thelma Wiles, 83, of 222 Courtland St. died Monday, July 1, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been in declining health for five months.
Born Oct. 4, 1918, in Danville, she was a daughter of George Robert Hall and Willie Clark Simmons Hall.
She was married to Lonnie Purcell Wiles, who died Feb. 19, 1982. She had lived all of her life in Pittsylvania County and Danville. She had worked for Dan River Inc. and also had worked in sales for the former G.C. Murphy Department Store. She was a member of Laurel Grove Baptist Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Brenda W. Walker of Raleigh, N.C.; four sons, George T. Wiles of Wake Forest, N.C., Thomas P. Wiles of Lincoln City, Ore., Mickey K. Wiles of Emerald Isle, N.C., and Ronnie C. Wiles of Lauderhill, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by two sisters, Mary H. Tate and Elizabeth H. Turpin.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Bill Owsley officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

Thelma Winstead
DANVILLE, Va. - Thelma Miles Winstead, 90, of 1625 Piney Forest Road, died Sunday, June 30, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center following two months of declining health and three days in the hospital.
Born June 3, 1912, in Henry County, she was the daughter of Rufus Miles and Lucy Seay Miles.
She was married Sept. 3, 1938, to Keith Lea Winstead, who predeceased her Aug. 15, 2001. She was a member of Grace Design United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Faith Circle and the Fellowship Sunday School Class. She lived her life in Danville. She was retired from Dan River Mills, Inc. where she worked as a Lab Technician.
Survivors include one son, Richard L. Winstead of Fort Smith, Ark.; one daughter, Beth Winstead Gentry of Danville; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday at Grace Design United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tom Shepherd and the Rev. Carolyn Winstead officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

Roy Brumfield
HALIFAX, Va. - Roy Lee Brumfield, 58, of 1025 Dougs Trail, died May 3, 2002, at the residence.
Born May 20, 1943, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Garvis Brumfield and Amalie Mae Manning Brumfield.
He was a member of Centerville Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Michael Vincent Brumfield and Jonathan Wayne Brumfield, both of Halifax; one sister, Francis B. Dawson of Halifax; one brother, Ollie Layne Brumfield of Halifax; and one granddaughter.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Halifax Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Frank Gooch officiating.

Randy Faison
RINGGOLD, Va. - Randall "Randy" Brian Faison, 36, of 3511 Rock Springs Road, died Friday, May 3, 2002 at his residence after a decline in health.
Born Oct. 23, 1965, in Williamsburg, he was a son of William "Bill" V. Faison Jr. and Kitty Norfleet Faison, who survive.
He was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church. He graduated from Halifax County High School in 1987 and had volunteered at God's Store House and Meals on Wheels. He had owned and operated the Snack and Chat store in Sutherlin.
Survivors, in addition to his parents of Ringgold, include one sister, Sherry F. Waid of Winston-Salem, N.C., and his paternal grandmother, Janie J. Faison of Newport News.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Luke's United Methodist Church with the Rev. Randy Duncan, the Rev. Dr. David Palmer and the Rev. Howard Green officiating. A private interment will follow at the Kerns Memorial United Methodist Church cemetery in Sutherlin.
