Henry Mayo
DANVILLE, Va. - Henry Hodge Mayo, 85, of 1111 Main Street, Stratford House, died Sunday, May 6, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 6, 1916, in Wilson, N.C., he was the son of Howard Anderson Mayo and Narcissia Grey Rogers Mayo.
He was married
to Earline Moore Mayo, who predeceased him. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and graduated from North Carolina State in Raleigh, N.C. with a Bachelors of Science Degree in textiles. He was associated with Burlington Mills for eight years and Dan River Inc. for 39 years, where he retired as Director of Fabric Development. He was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany where he served as Sunday School teacher and superintendent, Senior Warden and served on the Vestry. He served as a Boy Scout leader and was a former member of the Danville Kiwanis Club, German Club, Young Men’s Club and Danville Golf Club.
Survivors include two daughters, Anne Mayo Elliott of Spartanburg, S.C. and Janice Mayo Spessard of Burkburnett, Texas and four grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents and wife, by one brother, Howard Anderson Mayo Jr.
The funeral will be held 3 p.m. Thursday at the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany with the Rev. James Mathieson officiating. Interment
will follow at the Epiphany Church Columbarium.
The family will receive friends Wednesday at the residence.
The family suggest memorials may be made to the Epiphany Church Skinner Organ Fund.

Carol McIver
LYNCHBURG, Va. - Carol Ann McIver, 57, died Saturday, May 5, 2001, in Lynchburg, Va.
Born April 26, 1944, in Danville, she was the daughter of Frank McIver and Annie Cameron McIver.
Survivors include one brother, Donald C. McIver of Richmond, Va.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Adolf Otersen officiating.

Calvin Shelton Sr.
CHATHAM, Va. - Calvin Anderson Shelton Sr., 68, of Dry Fork, died Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at Piney Forest Health Care Center in Danville.
Born Nov. 30, 1932, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Daniel L. Shelton and Cassie Meadows Shelton.
He was of the Holiness faith.
Survivors include one son, Calvin A. Shelton Jr. of Chatham; one daughter, Judith S. Frances of Danville and one sister, Anna Dean Shelton of Dry Fork. The funeral will be held 3 p.m. Thursday at Scott Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Harry Meadows officiating. Interment
will follow at Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery in Dry Fork.

Jean Shelton
DANVILLE, Va. - Jean Moss Shelton, age 68, of 694 Indian Valley Road, died early Friday morning May 4, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center after four months of declining health and a four day stay at the hospital.
Mrs. Shelton was born in the Vandola community of Pittsylvania County on December 2, 1932, a daughter of the late Leonard Early Moss and Eula Pearl Moss Moss.
She married
William "Red" Shelton in 1947 who survives.
Mrs. Shelton had made her home in the Holland Road community of Danville for the past 40 years and was an Avon representative for 25 years before retiring in 1995. She graduated from Brosville High School and was a member of Vandola Baptist Church.
Survivors in addition to her husband of the residence include three daughters: Linda Shelton Fisher and Janet Shelton Rust both of Danville, and Joyce Shelton Collins of Providence, North Carolina, and two sons: William Eugene Shelton and Randy Thomas Shelton both of Danville, and one sister: Ann Marie Bryant of Danville, and 9 grandchildren, 1 step grandchild, and 6 great grandchildren also survive.
She was predeceased by a grandchild, Chelley Dawn Chilton.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Leonard Watlington and Rev. Roger Ewing. Interment
will follow at Schoolfield cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday evening from 7:00 - 8:30 P.M., and at other times at the residence.
Arnette Thorne
RINGGOLD, Va. - Arnette M. Thorne, 53, of 1600 Kentuck Church Road, died Saturday, April 28, 2001, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born May 14, 1947, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Ardieh Chaney and Florence Harris Chaney.
She was employed as a nurse at Riverside Health Care Center in Danville and was a member of the usher board and the missionary. She also worked as a part-time nurse at the Brian Center in Yanceyville, N.C.
Survivors include one daughter, Arnett Maria Thorne of Norfolk; four sons, Joel Lee Thorne, Demond Lee Thorne, Eric Anthony Thorne and Joe Thorne, all of Danville; and one sister, Barbara Betts of Danville.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at White Stone Pentecostal Holiness Church in Sutherlin, with Evangelist Gloria Camron officiating. Interment
will follow at White Stone.
The family will receive friends 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Beavers Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Elsie Turner
PENHOOK, Va. - Elsie Adkins Turner, 87, of 2100 Powhatan St., Falls Church, formerly of Penhook, died May 2, 2001, at Powhatan Nursing Home in Falls Church.
Born in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Charlie W. Adkins and Mary Haskins Adkins.
She was married
to Sam Willie Turner, who predeceased her. She had lived in northern Virginia for 60 years.
Survivors include one son, Dennis Samuel Turner of McLean; one sister, Edna Mahan of Chatham; one brother, Grady Adkins of Penhook and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Scott Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John McCray officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park in Danville.

Elder Nelson Valentine
DANVILLE, Va. - Elder Nelson Edward Valentine, 71, of 431 Wheatly Drive, died Saturday, May 5, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 8, 1930, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Robert Fletcher Valentine and Mary Garland Valentine.
He was married
to Odessa Echols Valentine, who survives. He was an associate minister of the Bibleway Worldwide Church.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two daughters, Peggy Valentine of Mitchellville, Md. and Marion Valentine of Landover, Md.; six sons, Fletcher Valentine of Danville, Randolph Valentine of Reidsville, N.C., William Valentine of Raleigh, N.C., Michael Valentine of Stokesdale, N.C., Richard Valentine of Sacramento, Calif. and Lawrence Valentine of Santa Maria, Calif.; six sisters, Della McLaughlin of Danville, Ethel Farrish of Richmond, Aquilla Walters, Fannie Walters, Lucille Hunt and Katie Brandon, all of Ringgold; one brother, Rosevelt Valentine of Dry Fork; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at Bibleway Worldwide Cathedral with Apostle Lawrence W. Campbell officiating. Interment
will follow at Floral Hills Memory Garden.

Selma Waller
CHATHAM, Va. - Mrs. Selma Crews Waller age 68, of 619 North Main Street, Chatham, Va. died Tuesday night (6-1-01) unexpectedly upon arrival at Danville Regional Medical Center. Born in Pittsylvania County, May 12, 1932. She was a daughter of the late Moses Crews and the Late Eliza Coles Crews. She was married
to John Henry Waller who survives. She was preceded in death by two brothers - Randolph Crews & James Oliver Crews and three sisters - Bertha Matthew, Lena Minter and Latha Oglesby.
She was employed at Chatham Hall for fourty-two years as a service master. She was a member of the Wilson Memorial Baptist Church in Chatham where she served as the chairman of the Flower Club. She was a member of the Senior Choir and the Missionary Society and formerly served as the assistant Church Clerk.
In addition to her husband, John Henry Waller of the residence she is survived by two sons - Steven R. Waller and wife Nancy of Chatham, Va. and John Henry Waller, Jr. and wife Michelle of Richmond, Va.; two sisters - Mrs. Eliza Bell Hughes of Washington, D.C. and Mrs. Stella Holmes of New Jersey; three grandchildren; two-great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives.
Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday (05-05-01) at 2:00 p.m. from the Wilson Memorial Baptist Church by the Rev. Nathaniel Jones and the Rev. Thomas L. Pounds with burial in the Fairview Baptist Church cemetery, Gretna, Va.

Edith Walton
CHATHAM, Va. - Edith Amos Walton, 84, of 308 Triangle School Road, died Monday, May 7, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 27, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Harry Amos and Annie Grant Amos.
She was first married
to William Wood Arnn, who predeceased her in 1942 and later married
Charlie Earl Walton who predeceased her in 1997. She was a member of Melville Avenue Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Betty A. Reynolds of Chatham; two sisters, Dottie Donovant of Martinsville and Sarah Aaron, both of Ringgold; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husbands, by one brother, Roy Amos.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Scott Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Charles Swanson and the Rev. J. Haywood Alcorn officiating. Interment
will be at Highland Burial Park in Danville.

Carrie Watson
DANVILLE, Va. - Carrie Daniel Watson, 84, of 305 Clover Lane, died May 1, 2001, at Duke Medical Center. She had been in declining health for the past two months, and in the hospital for the last four weeks.
Born March 14, 1917, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of the late Charlie Philip Daniel and the late Mary Watts Daniel.
She was married
to Denton Issac Watson on July 28, 1935. Mrs. Watson had lived her entire life in the Ringgold Community and Danville. She was Co-Owner and Treasurer of the former Boxwood Dairy, local Distributor of Sealtest Dairy Products for 28 years. Mrs Watson became a member of Ringgold Baptist Church at the age of 12 years. She taught Sunday School for the small children for 39 years along with teaching the small children and the teen age boys and girls in the Sunday night training union. She was a former member and teacher of the W.M.U. (Womens Missionary Union), the Sunbeams (Young Children) and the G.A. ’s (Young Teen Age Girls) of Ringgold Baptist Church and taught Vacation Bible School for 42 years. Mrs Watson loved working with children and young people. She was a former member of the Southern States Coorperation Home Advisory Committee and member and treasurer of the former Green Acres Womens Club.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two daughters and two sons-in-law, Nevida Watson Grubb and Carl Grubb of Mocksville, N.C., and Lorell Watson Jefferson and James (Jimmy) R. Jefferson of Danville; grandson and Wife, Larry & Pattie L. Clark of Charlotte, N.C.; granddaughter & Husband Karen & Gary Webb of Salisbury, N.C.; granddaughter & Husband Robyn & Joe Earnhardt of Rockwell, N.C.; granddaughter Terri Jefferson of Durham, N.C., and granddaughter Kelly Jefferson of Danville; and five great-grandchildren, Brandi Webb of Salisbury, N.C., Brooke Webb of Wilmington, N.C., Dustin Earnhardt of Rockwell, N.C., and Chelsea Clark and Andrew Clark both of Charlotte, N.C.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Bessie Daniel Arrington and Beatrice Daniel Atkinson.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, May 3, from Ringgold Baptist Church, with the Rev. Carl Burger officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park

CENTERVILLE, Tenn. - Dorothy Melissa Franklin Womack, 75, died Saturday, May 5, 2001.
Born Nov. 19, 1925, in Danville, Va., she was married
to Earle Dillon Womack, who predeceased her.
Survivors include three sons, Wayne Womack of Lyles, Tenn., Dana Womack of Olney, Md. and David Womack of York, Pa. and three grandchildren.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Spring Creek Baptist Church cemetery in Darlington Heights of Prince Edward County with the Rev. Ron Grenouillou officiating.
