Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Marie Womack

DANVILLE, Va. - Marie Glass Womack, 86, of 6531 Old Richmond Road, died Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 7, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Willie Glass and Ella Jones Glass.
She was married to John Womack, who survives. She was a retired employee of the Pittsylvania County School Board and last worked as the cafeteria manager for Kentuck Elementary School. She was a member of the Riceville Baptist Church where she was a member of the senior choir.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include three daughters, Ruth Womack of Danville, Joan Griggs of Washington, D.C. and Emily Womack of Richmond; three sons, Edward Womack and Thomas Womack, both of Danville and Michael Womack of Panama City, Fla.; one sister, Naomi Elder of Petersburg; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by two sisters, Parthenia Jones and Alice Glass and four brothers, Thomas Jefferson Glass, Robert Glass, Gordon Glass and Abner Glass.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Riceville Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronnie Walker and the Rev. Kevin McNeil officiating. Interment icon will follow at the church cemetery.
Miller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Rev. Walter Adams Sr.

DANVILLE, Va. - Rev. Walter L. Adams Sr., 74, of 125 Andes Drive, died Thursday, May 10, 2001, at the residence.
Born Sept. 9, 1926, in Newport News, he was the son of George Jasper Sr. and Delsie Adams Jasper.
He was married to Nancy Thomas Adams, who survives. He was a retired Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps and retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. He was the former pastor of Hackberry Baptist Church in Sutherlin and Union Missionary Baptist Church in Gretna.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include three daughters, Pamela Johnson of Richmond, Cathy Florence of Danville and Sherri Williams of Niceville, Fla.; four sons, Kevin Adams of Jamaica, N.Y., Gregory Adams of Brooklyn, N.Y., Alvin Logan of Jacksonville, Fla. and Timothy Logan of Korea; one sister, Theresa Collins of Trenton, N.J.; two brothers, George Jasper Jr. of Queens, N.Y. and Jerome Scales of Danville; 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Richard Terry officiating. Interment icon will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens with military rites by the United States Marine Corps Honor Guard.

Carlton Van Booth, Sr.

DANVILLE, Va. - Carlton Van Booth, Sr., 65, of 237 Haymore Street, died Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at the residence after seven years of declining health.
Born December 1, 1935, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Robert Thomas Booth (deceased) and Annie Meadows Booth (deceased).
He lived in Ohio for twenty years before returning to Danville in 1997. He was retired as an Electrician where he worked for the I.B.E.W. Local Union in Lynchburg, Virginia. He was of the baptist faith. He was a member of the American Legion Post 1097 and was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Air Force in the Korean War.
Survivors include son, Carlton V. Booth, Jr. of Danville, daughter, Joyce B. Davis of Ringgold, VA; grandsons, Jacob Pierce of Ringgold, VA and Anthony Davis of Ringgold, VA and granddaughter, Tambra Lynn Booth of Danville, VA.
The Graveside service will be held Saturday, May 12, 2001, at 11:00 A.M. at Floral Hills Memory Gardens with The Reverend Kenneth Hall officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7:00-8:00 P.M. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and other times at the residence.

Joseph Bostic

BLAIRS, Va. - Joseph William Bostic, 60, of 9140 U.S. Highway 29, died Friday, May 11, 2001, at Halifax Regional Hospital in South Boston.
Born Feb. 19, 1941, in Winston-Salem, N.C., he was the son of Gladis Aubbie Bostic and Lillie Belle Carter Bostic.
He was married to Kay Yarbrough Bostic, who survives. He was of the Baptist faith and lived most of his life in the Madison-Mayodan area of N.C. before moving to Blairs. He worked for A.L. Morris Trucking Company as a truck driver.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include one daughter, Lillie Bostic of Greensboro, N.C.; one step-daughter, Mona C. Hall of Danville; one step-son, David Lee Kendrick Jr. of Danville; one sister, Elizabeth B. McBride of Stokesdale, N.C.; one step-brother, Richard Wilson of Winston-Salem, N.C.; one step-sister, Lillian Perdue of Elkin, N.C. and one step-granddaughter.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by his step-mother, Rader Wilson Bostic.
Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home Westover Chapel is in charge of funeral arrangements, which are incomplete.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Nathaniel Brooks

FLORENCE, S.C. - Nathaniel Lee Brooks, 57, of 1434 Golf Terrace Blvd., No. 3, died Tuesday, May 15, 2001, at the residence.
Born June 8, 1943, in Roxboro, N.C., he was the son of John Page Brooks and Lois Norfleet Hayes Brooks.
He was married to Susan Holt Brooks, who survives. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and was a graduate of East Tennessee State and the University of Virginia. He was assistant Superintendent of Darlington Schools from 1972 to 1977 and served as Principal of Washington Coleman Elementary School from 1977 until 1991. He was a past president of South Boston Lions Club.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of Florence, include one daughter, Jane Brooks Gaskens of Florence; one son, Page Neal Brooks of Florence and two sisters, Anne Page Brooks of Richmond, Ky. and Beverly Brooks Jordan of Smithfield, N.C.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Russell Lee officiating. Interment icon will follow at Burchwood cemetery in Roxboro, N.C.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Powell Funeral Home in South Boston,Va.
The family suggests memorials may be made to the Patrick Henry Boys Home or the National Parkinson Disease Foundation.

Ellen Coleman

DANVILLE, Va. - Ellen Hurt Coleman age 83 of 342 Westhampton Ave. Danville, Virginia died Tuesday May 15, 2001 at the Duke University Hospital, in Durham, NC. Mrs. Coleman was born April 9, 1918 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Richard Logan Coleman and Janie Hurt Coleman. She is survived by two sisters-in-law, Susan Coleman of Danville Martha Coleman of Lexington, SC; four nieces, Margaret Logan Giles, Julia Coleman Smith, Caroline R. Gregory, and Susan Coleman Egan; five God Children, Ellen Leah Hurst, Ellen Angela Silver, Robert Carter Smith, Cara S. Smith, and Nicole S. Gibson, and a number of other nieces and nephews.
She was an active member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, a former Vestry member and treasurer for many years. She was an officer in the Kings Daughters. She taught school in Fincastle and in Pittsylvania County, and was a social worker in Pittsylvania County for eighteen years, retiring in 1983.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday May 18, 2001 at 2:00 P.M. from the St. John’s Episcopal Church, Mt. Airy, VA by the Rev. James W. Mathieson. Interment icon will be in the Chatham Burial Park in Chatham, Virginia. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 P.M. Thursday May 17, 2001 at Scott Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence, 342 Westhampton Ave. Danville, VA.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to a charity of your choice. Scott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Beatrice Cook

GRETNA, Va. - Lona Beatrice Cook, 84, of 1109 E. Gretna Road, died Saturday, May 12, 2001, at the residence.
Born Jan. 9, 1917, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Gidion Osbie Tuck and Rosa Bell Quarles Tuck.
She was married to William Henry Cook, who predeceased her. She was a member of Greenpond Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Nadine C. Kendrick of Climax; one son, Edward W. Cook of Gretna; two sisters, Gladys T. Owen of Roanoke and Cella T. Cook of Gretna; one brother, Beuford Tuck of Danville; four grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Scott Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. R.G. Rowland and the Rev. John McCray officiating. Interment icon will follow at Liberty Christian Church cemetery in Gretna.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Sunday at Scott Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
Scott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ola Davis

DANVILLE, Va. - Ola Meadors Davis, 81, of 651 Mount Cross Road, Danville, Va., died on May 13, 2001, in Danville Regional Medical Center, after declining in health the past 2 months and spending the last 6 days in the hospital.
Born on July 30, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of the late Raleigh Howard Meadors and the late Dora Johnson Meadors.
She was married on December 5, 1941, to the late James Robertson Davis, who died on January 3, 1977. Mrs. Davis had lived all of her life in Pittsylvania County and Danville. She was a homemaker and along with her late husband James R. Davis she had operated Davis Motor Sales where she worked as secretary for a number of years. Mrs. Davis was a member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church.
Survivors include son, James Randall Davis and daughter-in-law Kathy W. Davis, both of Danville, Va.; son, Jerry Robertson Davis of Danville, Va.; sisters, Annie M. Lewis of Danville, Va., Helen M. Nichols of Danville, Va., Ruth M. Soyars of Danville, Va.; and grandson, Jay Randall Davis of Danville, Va.
She was predeceased by her husband, James Robertson Davis, and by 2 sisters, Maytell M. Ragsdale & Delsie M. Hall.
The funeral will be held Tuesday, May 15th, at 4:00 p.m. from the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Reverend J. Wayne Crews & the Reverend William J. Soyars. Interment icon will be held in Highland Burial Park.
The family received friends Monday night from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times at the residence 651 Mount Cross Road.

Carl Duffey

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Carl Burton Duffey, 62, of 2091 Alphonse Dairy Road died Sunday, May 13, 2001, in Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Oct. 11, 1938, in Halifax County, he was a son of Burkley Grey Duffey and Mary Wade Duffey, who survive.
He was married to Judy DaJarnette Ratliff Duffey, who survives. Prior to his retirement, he was an employee of Burlington Industries.
In addition to his wife of South Boston and his parents of Randolph, he is survived by one stepson, Charles Anthony Ratliff of South Boston; one sister, Brenda Davis of Scottsburg; and one stepgranddaughter.
He was predeceased by two sisters and one brother.
A funeral will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday at Brooks Funeral Home, with the Rev. Courtney W. Coffer officiating. Interment icon will follow in Grace Baptist Church cemetery in Virgilina.
The family received friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Brooks Funeral Home, and at other times at the home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Halifax County Cancer Association, P.O. Box 875, South Boston, 24592; or the Halifax County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 183, South Boston, Va., 24592.

Jack Evans

CHATHAM, Va. - William Otis "Jack" Evans, 80, of 412 Transco Road died Saturday, May 12, 2001, at the residence.
Born June 26, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of William H. Evans and Sarah Danley Evans.
He was married to Nancy McClanahan Evans, who survives. He was the oldest member of Shockoe Baptist Church and was a pilot in the United States Army Air Corps during the World War II era. He was retired from Dan River Mills. He was also a farmer.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include five daughters, Billie Ann E. McCaw of Silver Spring, Mass., Susan E. Smith of Powhatan, Jan E. Lemelson of Sierre Vista, Ariz., and Sherry E. Reynolds and Tina E. Brown, both of Chatham; one son, Homer Evans of Halifax; two sisters, Roberta E. Betterton of Chatham and Effie E. Simpson of Vernon Hill; and eight grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by one sister, Ila E. Brown.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Shockoe Baptist Church, with the Rev. Michael Huff and Curtis English officiating. Interment, with military honors given by Danville American Legion Post 1097, will follow at Hillcrest Burial Park in Chatham.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Wednesday at Scott Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Hardney Gibson

ROANOKE, Va. - Hardney Aaron Gibson, 78, of Roanoke died Sunday, May 13, 2001.
Born Feb. 10, 1923, he was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Army Air Force 613th Bombardment Squadron and the 401st Bombardment Group. He was also a prisoner of war in Germany, remaining in a hospital for 13 months. He was a 26-year volunteer with the Cave Spring Volunteer Fire Department, and he was retired from the U.S. Postal Service with 30 years of service.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Miriam E. Gibson; three daughters, Debra Hodges, Dana Cox and JoAnn Gordon; one son, Jeffrey Gibson; four sisters, Debra Bond, Dora Abdulkadir, Laura Perdue and Mary Hayes; one brother, Clay Gibson; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Dr. Parrish W. Jones officiating.
The family will receive friends after the graveside service.
Oakey’s South Chapel, Roanoke, is in charge of arrangements.
