AXTON, Va. - Mary Sue Brooks Anderson, 49, of 9960 Chatham Road, died Thursday, May 17, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center after three days in the hospital.
Born Feb. 26, 1952, in Tazewell, Tenn., she was the daughter of Johnny Ray Brooks and Anna Brogans Brooks, who survives.
She was married
Feb. 14, 1990, to Reuben M. Anderson, who survives. She was a graduate of Bartlet-Yancey High School in Yanceyville, N.C. She was a member of Christians United Baptist Church and lived most of her life in Danville prior to moving to the Mountain Valley community of Axton two years ago. She was employeed for 16 years at the Danville Regional Medical Center as a coordinator of the emergency room and was a veteran, having served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War stationed in the Azores Islands off the coast of Portugal.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence and mother of Pelham, N.C., include one daughter, Belinda Powell Anderson of the residence; one sister, Linda Brooks Gauldin of Ringgold and four brothers, Leonard Brooks of Ruffin, N.C., James Brooks of Houston, Miss., Larry Brooks of Pelham, N.C. and Dennis Brooks of Waverly.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Larry Hill officiating. Interment
will take place at Anderson Family cemetery in Mountain Valley with military honors performed by American Legion Post 325.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and other times at the residence.

Cephas Billingslea Jr.
VIRGILINA, Va. - Cephas Ray Billingslea Jr., 67, of 8208 Bill Tuck Highway, died May 18, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center.
Born July 29, 1933, in Buena Vista, he was the son of Cephas Ray Billingslea Sr. and Hava Grace McClain Billingslea.
He was married
to Josephine Smith Billingslea, who survives. He was a member of Grace Baptist Church, Woodmen of the World Lodge No 106 and a lifetime member of the Jaycees.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of Virgilina, include one daughter, Susan Hava B. Gordon of Amherst; one son, George Ray Billingslea of Richmond; one sister, Ardith Billingslea Thompson of Virgilina; one brother, John Billingslea of Lynchburg and six grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by one son, Cephas Ray Billingslea III.
The funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Grace Baptist Church with the Rev. Jack Stewart officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery with Woodmen of the World rites.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Powell Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Grace Baptist Church building fund.

Loyd Brumfield
GRETNA, Va. - Loyd Lee Brumfield, 82, of 1152 Sandy Road, died Friday, May 18, 2001, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born June 20, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of George W. Brumfield and Sallie Bolling Brumfield.
He was married
to Jennie Dalton Brumfield, who survives. He was a member and Deacon of Round Pond Baptist Church and was a farmer. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in World War II where he received the Purple Heart, the European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal. He was a prisoner of war, served with the 44th Engineers Co. and was a sharp shooter. He was a member of D.A.V. Chapter 46 and American Legion Post 232, Gretna.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Loyd G. "Buddy" Brumfield and Jerry Brumfield, both of Gretna; three daughters, Joe Ann Brumfield of Ringgold, Ethel Dalton of Gretna and Linda Shelton of Gretna; two brothers, Jim F. Brumfield and Lonnie G. Brumfield, both of Gretna; one sister, Sally Purdy of Gretna; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by five brothers and two sisters, Walter Brumfield, Albert Brumfield, Guy Brumfield, Roy Brumfield, Leffie Brumfield, Ethel Saunders and Edna Giles.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Colbert-Moran Chapel with the Rev. A.A. Blanks, the Rev. John Belderes and Neville Shelton officiating. Interment
will follow at Carl O. Moran Memorial Gardens in Gretna with military honors performed by V.F.W. 4165 and D.A.V. Chapter 46.

SUITLAND, Md. - Cubie Coles, 61, died Wednesday, May 15, 2001, at DeBlair / Prince George Hospital in Cheverly.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Coles of Bowie and Sonya Coles Swan of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands; one son, Carrington Coles of Norfolk, Va.; two granddaughters and four brothers, Lindburg Goles, Emmit Coles, Hobert Coles and Conwell Coles.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at New Zion Baptist Church in Nathalie, Va., with the Rev. Willie Yancey officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.
Viewing will be held one hour prior to the service.

Philip Crabtree
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Philip Warren Crabtree, 86, of 1170 Shady Lane, died Thursday, May 17, 2001, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Jan. 11, 1915, in Halifax County, he was the son of Joseph Richard Crabtree and Mamie Cane Franklin Crabtree.
He was first married
to Virginia Moore Crabtree and later married
Marie Thompson Crabtree. He was a member of Dan River Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Arlene Crabtree Jones of South Boston; one son, Leonard Warren Crabtree of South Boston; three grandchildren; two step-children, Percy Jackson and Jimmy Jackson, both of South Boston and four step-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Oak Ridge cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Melvin Bradshaw officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Powell Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Leonard Crabtree, 1076 Shady Lane.

Ross Cruz
DANVILLE, Va. - Rosendo Molina "Ross" Cruz, 73, of 219 Withers Road, died Wednesday, May 16, 2001, at V.A. Hospital in Salem after one year of declining health and one week in the hospital.
Born March 1, 1928, in San Antonio, Texas, he was the son of Lupe Cruz and Esther Molina Cruz.
He was married
July 31, 1948, to Mildred Ball Cruz, who predeceased him Dec. 9, 1974. He was a member of the Tabernacle and lived most of his life in Danville. He was the owner of Cruz Tile Company and was a veteran, having served in the United States Air Force during World War II. After serving in the Air Force, he was a member of the North Carolina National Guard in Reidsville, N.C.
Survivors include two daughters, Shirley C. Carroll and Patty C. Evan, both of Providence, N.C.; two sons, Russell M. Cruz of Floyd and Rudy Q. Cruz of Providence, N.C.; three sisters, Patra Foxman of Phelan, Calif., Nina Winters of Memphis, Tenn. and Susie Gripprick of San Antonio, Texas; one brother, Raymond Cruz of San Antonio, Texas and five grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one sister, Mary Salazas and one brother, Lupe Cruz Jr.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. R.J. Barber Jr. officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

Gladys Farlow
DANVILLE, Va. - Gladys Robertson Farlow, 90, formerly of Fagan Street and Heritage Towers, died Wednesday, May 16, 2001, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born March 26, 1911, in West Virginia, she was the daughter of Ida Elizabeth Robertson Boyter.
She was married
to James Monroe Farlow Jr., who predeceased her. She lived most of her life in Danville and was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church. She lived the past four years at Roman Eagle Memorial Home and was a homemaker.
Survivors include one son, J. Marvin Farlow of Danville; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her husband and mother, by one son, Raymond C. Farlow Sr. and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at First Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Joe Beck and the Rev. Allen M. Dawson officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Roe Fitzgerald
ASTORIA, N.Y. - Roe Dock Fitzgerald, 81, died Tuesday, May 15, 2001.
Born June 2, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, Va., he was the son of Boise and Pattie Wimbush Fitzgerald.
He was married
to Jerelene Terry Fitzgerald, who survives. He was a member of Shockoe Baptist Church and joined the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Flushing where he served on the Usher Board and Trustee Board after relocating to New York. He was a World War II United States Army veteran.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two daughters, Earnestine of Fort Washington, Md. and Terry of Jamaica, N.Y.; two grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Shockoe Baptist Church with the Rev. Kevin M. McNeil officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will be at the residence of Izetter Dixon, State Road 666, Java, Va.

George Gunter
NORMAL, Ill. - George R. Gunter, 78, of 309 Plumage Court, died Tuesday May 15, 2001, at the residence.
Born July 25, 1922, in Pittsylvania County, Va., he was the son of Luther Gunter and Martha Pounds.
He was married
to Dorothy Garland, who survives. He was first married
in February, 1943 to Cora Harper, who predeceased him Sept. 7, 1987. He was married
June 4, 1988, to Dorothy Garland Betts, who survives. He was a retired textile worker at Dan River Mills in Danville, Va. He was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II. He was Head Deacon and former member of White Rock Baptist Church in Mountain Hill, Va. for 27 years and was a member of Pittsylvania County Deacon Union, Cherrystone Baptist Association, and past President of N.A.A.C.P. in Danville, Va. He was founder and president of Pilgrim Travelers Gospel group in Danville, Va. and was a member of Waymen A.M.E. Church in Bloomington, where he served as Stewart and on the Trustee Board.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include two sons, Roger Gunter Jr. of Danville, Va. and Michael Peterson of Normal; three daughters, Deborah Gunter of Frankfort, Sophronia "Bree" Breedlove of Frankfort and Pauline Blackwell of Pelham, N.C.; three sisters, Pauline Davis of Danville, Va., Nannie Bennett of Chatham, Va. and Besty Tanner of Danville, Va.; 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by two brothers and five sisters.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Wayman A.M.E. Church in Bloomington with the Rev. Samuel K. Sumner officiating. Military rites will be performed by Carl S. Martin, Post No. 635 of the American Legion. Interment
will take place at Evergreen Memorial cemetery in Bloomington.
Visitation will be held noon-1 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Nathan Lewis
SALEM, Va. - Nathan Winston Lewis, 77, died Friday, May 18, 2001, at Salem Veterans Hospital in Salem.
Born May 30, 1923, in Pelham, N.C., he was the son of Oscar L. Lewis and Sally R. Bocock.
He was married
to Shirley H. Lewis, who predeceased him. He was a veteran of World War II and a retired supervisor at Newport News Ship Builders.
Survivors include two brothers, Henry Lewis of Newport News and James Lewis of Pelham, N.C. and one sister, Dorothy Tasker of Hampton.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Floral Hills Memory Garden with military graveside honors given by the Honor Guard of American Legion Post No. 1097.
