Virginia Beauman
QUINTON, Va. - Virginia Sours Beauman, 77, of 8720 Black Creek Road, died Tuesday, May 22, 2001, at the residence.
Born Aug. 24, 1923, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Jesse Davis Sours and Irene Griffith Sours.
She was married
to Arthur Henry Beauman, who predeceased her. She was a member of Providence United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons, A. Emory Beauman and Jesse V. Beauman, both of Quinton; one brother, Jesse D. Sours Jr. of Chatham and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Scott Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Reynolds officiating. Interment
will follow at Chatham Burial Park in Chatham, Va.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Wednesday at Scott Funeral Home.

Janie Boaze
DANVILLE, Va. - Janie Clark Boaze, 77, of 171 Martin Road, died Friday, May 25, 2001, at the residence.
Born June 24, 1923, in Java, she was the daughter of John Adam Glass and Beatrice Owens Glass.
She was married
to Garland Lee Boaze, who predeceased her Oct. 28, 1979. She was retired from Dan River Inc. after 42 years of service and was of the Holiness faith.
Survivors include two daughters, Kathleen B. Davis of Milton, N.C. and Jeannette B. Davis of Wilmington, N.C.; one son, Gerald W. Boaze of Sutherlin; two sisters, Louise Andrews and Betty Kratz, both of Danville; one brother, Carroll D. Glass of Blairs; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband by four brothers, Buford E. Glass, Robbie Glass, Kenneth Glass and John Glass Jr.; and one grandson.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Debra Dillard, 201 Cline St., off of Withers Road.

Mark Bohannon
DANVILLE, Va. - Mark White Bohannon, 80, of 1584 Halifax Road, Danville, Va., died on May 25, 2001, in Danville Regional Medical Center after declining health for the past 3 years and spending the last three days in the hospital.
Born on October 5, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of the late Luke Bohannon and the late Mary Ann Henderson Bohannon.
He was married
on November 17, 1945, to the late Bessie Sue Dodd Bohannon who died on February 4, 1998. Mr. Bohannon had lived all of his life in Pittsylvania County and Danville. He had worked with Dan River Inc. in the former Riverside Division # 8 Inspection as a sheerer and sewing machine fixer until his retirement with over 40 years of service. Mr. Bohannon was a member of the Glenwood Memorial Baptist Church where he had served as Deacon, R.A. Counselor and on a number of other church committees. Mr. Bohannon served with the U.S. Army during W.W. II in campaigns and battles in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He received the Good Conduct Medal, the World War II Victory Ribbon, the American Theater Service Ribbon and the European African Middle Eastern Ribbon.
Survivors include Sons Ronnie W. Bohannon of Danville, Va. and Donnie R. Bohannon of Sutherlin, Va.; Daughter in Law Robin B. Bohannon of Sutherlin, Va.; Son Steve M. Bohannon of Danville, Va.; Sisters Nadine B. Slayton of Halifax, Va. and Bernice B. Morris of Greensboro, NC; 5 Grandchildren and 1 Great-Grandchild.
He was predeceased by his Wife; 4 Brothers - Clyde Bohannon, George Bohannon, Jerry Bohannon, Lee Bohannon; 1 Sister - Theresa B. Lickbill and Grandson - Roger Bohannon.
The funeral will be held Monday, May 28th at 2:00 p.m. from the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Reverend Rick Lancaster. Interment
will follow in Highland Burial Park with Military Honors conducted by American Legion Post 1097.
The family received friends Sunday night from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times at the residence 1584 Halifax Road in the Glenwood Community.
Irene Boyd
DANVILLE, Va. - Irene Hayes Boyd, 77, of 201 Stanley Drive, died Sunday, May 27, 2001, at the residence.
Born Aug. 5, 1923, in Wilkes County, N.C., she was the daughter of Harrison Hayes and Fannie Mae Cockerham Hayes.
She was married
to Charlie Lester Boyd, who predeceased her July 7, 1991. She lived most of her life in Danville and retired from Dan River Inc. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Kenneth Boyd and Larry Boyd, both of Danville; one daughter, Gaynell Boyd Merricks of Danville; three sisters, Ruby H. Shores of Thurmond, N.C., Mildred H. Hartman of Temple Hills, Md., and Frances H. Brown of Arlington; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by two brothers, Carl Hayes and Herman Hayes and four sisters, Marie Sandridge, Gladys Owen, Mable Walters and Kathleen Swaim.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, at Townes Funeral Home with the Rev. Roy Newton officiating. Entombment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Townes Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Harvey Butts
DANVILLE, Va. - Harvey Green Butts, 81, of 4193 Old Hwy. 86 North, died May 18, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 23, 1919, in Caswell County N.C., he was the son of George Edward Butts and Mollie Elizabeth McFarling Butts.
He was married
to Dorothy Webster Butts who survives. He was a member of Community Baptist Church for 60 years, and a deacon for 50 years. He was retired from the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
Survivors in addition to his wife include two daughters, Ann Smith of Providence, N.C., Elizabeth Sue Dix of Blanch, N.C.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son Harvey Butts Jr., one sister and two brothers.
A funeral will be held 3 p.m. Monday at Community Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Smith and Rev. Keith Bowling officiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 2-3:30 p.m. Sunday at Community Baptist Church and at other times at the residence.

Durelle Canada Jr.
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Durelle Gregory Canada, Jr., 82, of 1019 Avondale Drive, died May 18, 2001, at his home.
Born in South Boston, on August 14, 1918, he was the son of Durelle Gregory Canada Sr., and Mary Dejarnette Canada.
He was married
to Claire Barbour Canada. He was a member of the First Baptist Church where he was a Sunday School teacher, deacon, and president of the Lacy Bible Class. He also was former president of the South Boston Rotary Club and former president of the Halifax United Way. He was a U.S. Navy World War II veteran.
Survivors in addition to his wife include one daughter, Candy C. Lance of South Boston; one son, Durelle Gregory Canada, III, of Scottsdale, Ariz. and three granddaughters.
A graveside memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at the Oak Ridge cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Bob Fox and the Rev. Dr. Melvin Bradshaw officiating.

Jessie Carter
LIBERTYVILLE, Ill. - Jessie Tredway Carter of Libertyville, Illinois died on May 6, 2001 at Libertyville Manor. She was born in Little Falls, Passaic County, New Jersey on October 14, 1912. Her parents were Page and Anne (nee Johnson) Tredway of Virginia. Mrs. Carter graduated from Randolph-Macon Women’s College in Lynchburg, VA. In the 1940s she moved to Chicago where she worked for the Henry George School of Social Science.
She married
Weld Saunders Carter in 1963. Together with her husband, she worked to create and nurture the Committee on Taxation, Resources and Economic Development, which published 12 academic books on Georgist thought in the current day. They resided in Antioch, IL for many years before moving to Fox Lake, IL.
Mrs. Carter made a point of writing an activist or supportive letter a day to legislators, public figures and others who could make a difference in the pursuit of justice and peace. She was interested in animal rights and especially loved cats and birds.
She spent a number of years planning a 1995 family reunion in Chatham and Lynchburg, VA. The reunion included relatives from the Johnson, Gilliam and Carter families, laying the groundwork for future reunions.
She is survived by her step-son Weld Saunders Carter, Jr. of Belmont, MA, three step-granddaughters, a great grandson, a sister-in-law, Jane Matteson Love and many cousins and fellow Georgists.
She was preceded in death by her husband Weld Saunders Carter, a step-son Ronald Purvis Carter and her brother Page Tredway, Jr.
The funeral arrangements were private.
Nannie Clifton
DANVILLE, Va. - Nannie Sue Murphy Clifton, 85, formerly of 1825 West Main St., died Sunday, May 27, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been a resident at Riverside Health Care Center since April.
Born Dec. 7, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Johnnie W. Murphy and Elizabeth Bryant Murphy.
She was married
to Clyde Henry Clifton, who predeceased her.
She lived most of her life in Danville and worked as a waitress for Wayside Diner before her retirement in 1977. She was a member of Forest Lawn Baptist Church and the Retired Senior Citizens Club.
She was a volunteer for Danville Regional Medical Center and Riverside Health Care Center.
Survivors include two brothers, Evans Murphy of Danville and William "Bill" Murphy of Greensboro, N.C. and one sister, Marie Harkey of Statesville, N.C.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by one sister, Hattie Murphy; one half-sister, Gladys Hill; one brother, Sam Murphy and one half-brother, Tom Murphy.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating.
The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home.

‘Chuck’ Carlton Ray Cobb
CHATHAM, Va. - Mr. "Chuck" Carlton Ray Cobb, 68, of 11437 Franklin Tpke., Chatham, Va., died Sunday, May 27, 2001, at the residence.
Chuck was affiliated with the Hatcher Center Shelter Workshop where he served in various capacities for over 20 years. He was passionate about his family and friends. Serving others was a vital part of his life. He also served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict era and was affiliated with the Methodist faith.
The memorial service will be held Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at 6 p.m. in the Hatcher Center Chapel located in Blairs, Va. with the Rev. Woodrow Giles officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence Tuesday evening from 7-8:30 p.m.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Mays Cobb of the residence; two daughters, Marcia Cobb-Jackson of Chatham and Sarah Gentry and her husband Keith of Danville; two sons, Casey R. Cobb of Troutville and W. Reid Davis and his wife Teresa of Danville and four grandchildren, Joshua Davis, Nicholas Davis, Jacob Jackson and Ashley Cobb.

DANVILLE, Va. - Memorial services for Brenda Compton will be held Saturday, May 26, 2001 at 11:00 A.M. from the graveside at Highland Burial Park.
