Edward Polhamus
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Edward Charles Polhamus, 78, died on Monday, May 28, 2001. A native of Washington D.C., he had been a peninsula resident since 1944. He was a member of North Riverside Baptist Church since 1953, where he served as a deacon, was a former Sunday School director and treasurer, and served on many other committees.
Mr. Polhamus had a most distinguished research career at the NASA Langley Research Center. There he joined the research staff in 1944 after receiving his B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland. He was active in a broad range of aerodynamic research related to high-speed aircraft technology, aerodynamic prediction methods, and cryogenic wind-tunnel development. He is recognized in the National Air and Space Museum’s Flight Technology Gallery and received the NASA Medal for Exceptional Scientific Achievement. He served on National Academy of Sciences Advisory Committees, was a member of the international Fluid Dynamics Panel for NATO, and was an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
Mr. Polhamus’ research directly led to the practical use of variable sweep, such as the F-14, for which he holds a US patent. He directly contributed to the development of "vortex-lift" strakes like are used on the F-16 and F-18 aircraft, and developed a remarkable theory, the leading-edge suction analogy, for predicting these vortex-flow aerodynamics. He also led the development of a cryogenic-concept for advanced wind tunnel testing that resulted in the Langley National Transonic Facility, a wind tunnel that is unique in the world. Upon retirement in 1981 as the head of the Fluid Dynamics Branch, he continued to serve NASA Langley as a Distinguished Research Associate.
But beyond his many technical achievements, Mr. Polhamus was an even more renowned mentor for the many people who were privileged to work with him. Always putting self-interest aside, his care and concern for those about him led to the development of many careers at NASA, and many of his researchers grew into positions of increasing technical and managerial responsibility. In this capacity, his legacy at the Langley Research Center will live on for many years to come.
He also was a tutor at Riverside Elementary School, and volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and Meals on Wheels. He was a good athlete, and loved to play sports, such as basketball, baseball and golf.
Survivors include his wife, Josephine F. Polhamus; two sons, Edward C. Polhamus, Jr., and his wife, Linda, of Danville, and William F. Polhamus, and his wife, Linda, of Roanoke; five grandsons, Winston Polhamus, William Polhamus, Brian Polhamus, Scott Polhamus and Devin LaFlamme, and one granddaughter, Brenda Anderson, and her husband, Chris.
