Willie Francisco
SUMTER, S.C. - Willie Jean Francisco, 65, died Saturday, May 4, 2002, at the residence.
Born in Ringgold, Va., he was the son of William and Mary Andrews Francisco.
He was married to Barbara Helen Shofner Francisco, who survives. He served in the U.S. Marines, the National Guard, in the Vietnam War, and retired as a master sergeant from the U.S. Air Force. He was past president of the Midland Retired Military Association and was a Mason and member of the York Rite and Scottish Rite. He was a Shriner where he was a member of the Truckers Unit and the Jesters. He was a former member of the Civil Air Patrol and was a former treasurer of the Gamecock Shrine Club. He was a member of Alice Drive Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to his wife include one daughter, Maria Dawn Francisco Caldwell of Irmo; and six grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one son, Daniel Gene Francisco.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bullock Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Mark Bordeaux officiating.
The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Bullock Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence.

Annelle ‘Nell' Martin
RICHMOND, Va. - Annelle T. (Nell) Martin, age 81, of Richmond, formerly of Gretna, Va., died Saturday, May 4, 2002. She was the widow of E. Davis Martin. Survivors include 2 sons; Dr. E. Davis Martin Jr. and his wife Ruth and Richard L. Martin, 1 brother, George L. Temple Jr. and his wife Dorothy, 3 grandchildren; Richard David Martin, Michele Martin Murmer and Matthew Davis Martin and 2 nieces; Olivia Davis of Salisbury, Md. and Christy Botterill of Elliston, Va. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. this evening at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, 2002 in Gretna Burial Park, Gretna, Va. William Osborne
CHATHAM, Va. - William Drynan Osborne, 82, of 2464 Toshes Road, died Sunday, May 5, 2002, at Riverside Health and Rehab Center.
Born April 8, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Will Thomas Osborne and Rose Ann Towler Osborne.
He was a member of New Bethel Church of the Bretheren and was a retired farmer.
Survivors include three brothers, Onyx Osborne, and Roger Osborne, both of Chatham, and Emory Osborne of Hurt; and seven sisters, Dorothy Moore of Chatham, Annie Donley of Martinsville, Evelyn Perry of Mt. Airy, Md., Relda Chaney-Shelton of Martinsville, Ruby Cravens of Chatham, Brenda Brooks of Chatham, and Gladys Osborne of Chatham.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by one stepmother, Irene Towler Osborne; and two brothers, Burton Osborne and Carl Osborne.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at New Bethel Church of the Bretheren with Curtis English, minister, and the Rev. Harry Moser and Leo Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at Wagner Family Cemetery.

Helen Pruitt
RUFFIN, N.C. - Helen Ruth Pruitt, 67, of 326 Williamson Creek Road, died Saturday, May 4, 2002, at Annie Penn Hospital in Reidsville.
Born Aug. 23, 1934, in Ruffin, she was the daughter of Roy Thomas Pruitt and Annie Sue Jones Pruitt.
She lived most of her life in the Mayfield community and was a member of True Gospel Baptist Church.
Survivors include seven brothers, Roy Pruitt of Stanley, Leonard Pruitt and Vern Pruitt, both of Ruffin, Bill Pruitt, and Eddie Pruitt, both of Eden, Randy Pruitt of Ruffin, and Paul Pruitt of Danville, Va.
She was predeceased by one brother, Bobby Pruitt; and one sister, Beatrice Pruitt.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at True Gospel Baptist Church in Caswell County with the Rev. Hubert Inman and the Rev. Dr. Doug Barber officiating. Interment will follow at Dan River Primitive Baptist Church cemetery in Rockingham County.

Janie Raines
DANVILLE, Va. - Janie Dodd Raines, 90, of 3960 Mount Cross Road, Danville, VA, died Sunday, May 5, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born December 24, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, VA, she was the daughter of Jones Dodd & Lillie Blair Dodd, both deceased.
She was married to Cephas H. Raines, who died in 1975. Mrs. Raines lived most of her life in the Mt. Cross community and was a member of Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church. She retired from Dan River Mills. She had been in declining health since December of last year.
Survivors include 3 sisters, Arlene Dodd Mills of Dry Fork, VA, Frances Dodd Raines of Danville, VA, and Battie Walton of Sandy Hook, VA; special friend, Florence Holley of Dry Fork, VA; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by 2 sisters, Anna Raines and Clara Collins; and 4 brothers, Paul Dodd, Reginald Dodd, Bobby Dodd, and Silas Dodd.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, 2002, at Danville Memorial Gardens Mausoleum by the Rev. Wayne Crews. Burial will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

Alma Stanley
DANVILLE, Va. - Alma Watlington Stanley, 83, of 242 Jeanette Drive, died Sunday, May 5, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 24, 1918, in Danville, she was the daughter of Elijah Lawrence Watlington and Rosa Smart Watlington.
She was married August 1936, to Clarence W. Stanley, who predeceased her Jan. 5, 2000. She lived most of her life in the Schoolfield community and had been employed at Dan River Mills for 15 years and was also a homemaker. She was a charter member of Holland Road Baptist Church. She had been in declining health for the past year and had been in the hospital for one week.
Survivors include one daughter, Carolyn Stanley McGuire of Blairs; two sons, Phillip K. Stanley of Danville, and Tommy W. Stanley of Ringgold; one brother, Elijah "Larry" Watlington Jr. of Danville; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased in addition to her parents and husband, by two brothers, Harry Watlington and Bernace Watlington.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Lee Harris officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence.

DANVILLE, Va. - Cora Loretta Stephens, 73, of 10 Cardwell St., died Wednesday, May 1, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 28, 1928, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Minnie Stephens and Arlove Giggetts Stephens.
Survivors include five daughters, Pamela Stephens, Joyce Wimbush, Deborah Stephens, Delbra Averette and Valerie Stephens, all of Danville; four sons, Percy Stephens of Dallas, Tyrone Stephens and Curtis Stephens, both of Danville, and Carl Stephens of Johnson City, Tenn.; three sisters, Geraldine Logan of Ringgold, Lelia Plunkett of Chatham and Gladys Brown of Danville; three brothers, Patrick Stephens of South Boston, Johnnie Stephens of Johnson City, Tenn. and Willie Neal Stephens of Danville.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jerome Morris officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Louise T. Brown
DANVILLE, Va. - Etta Louise Toler Brown, 60, of 1444 Mount Cross Road, died 4:20 a.m. Thursday, May 30, 2002, at Riverside Health Care Center in Danville.
Born Jan. 23, 1942, in Danville, she was the daughter of Robert and Rebecca McBride.
She was first married to John Toler and later married Roy Brown, both predeceased her. She lived her whole life in Danville. She was a member of Timberlake Baptist Church.
Survivors include one brother, David Paul McBride of Hampton; one sister, Mary Elizabeth Hawker of Caswell County, N.C.; two sons, Ricky Toler and Robert Toler, both of Danville; three daughters, Rhonda Brown and Debra Sue Oakes, both of Danville, and Tammy Toler of Durham, N.C.; and six grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Barker Funeral Home with the Rev. Walter Yancey officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Odessa Dix
DANVILLE, Va. - Odessa Via Dix, 86, of 225 Hamlin Ave., died Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at the residence.
Born Sept. 28, 1915, in Bassett, she was married to Fred Dix, who predeceased her. She worked as an LPN for Danville Nursing Home and later for Roman Eagle Memorial Home where she retired. She was of the Baptist faith and had been in declining health for one year.
Survivors include one daughter, Dorothy Dix O'Neal of Cary, N.C.; three grandchildren, Marlene Shepard of Danville, Gary Kendrick of South Carolina, Vickie Moore of Cary, N.C.; and three great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Mildred Hardy and Opal Haynes; one brother, Chester Via.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Fredrick J. Vicks officiating.

Walter Edwards
CHATHAM, Va. - Walter Worth Edwards age 57 of 660 Samuel Harris La. Chatham went home to be with the Lord, Thursday May 30, 2002. Mr. Edwards was born October 3, 1944 in Allegheny County North Carolina. He was the son of the late Edgar Worth Edwards and Rachel Dix Edwards. He is survived by two daughters, Mary Edwards Dodd and her husband Booby R. Dodd of Chatham and Allison Edwards Dolan and her husband Frank J. Dolan, Jr. of Dry Fork; four sisters, Sue E. Strader, Kay E. Delancey, Lynn E. Wilson, and Stella E. Pratt all of Ruffin, NC; three brothers, Darrell Edwards, Charles Edwards and Garnett Edwards all of Ruffin, NC; two grandchildren, Taylor Elizabeth Dodd of Chatham and Joshua Edward Dolan of Dry Fork. He was a Member Samuel Harris Memorial Baptsit Church and a Deacon, Sunday school Teacher and former choir director. He was employed by the Ownes-Brockway Glass.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, June 2, 2002 at 2:00 PM from the Samuel Harris Memorial Baptist Church by the Rev. Thomas Wright and the Rev. Henry A. Meadows, Jr. Interment will be in the Hillcrest Burial Park. the family will receive friends Saturday June 1, 2002 from 7 to 8 PM at Samuel Harris Memorial Baptist Church and at other times will be at the residence of his daughter Allison Dolan 4393 Dry Fork Road, Dry Fork, VA. Gertrude Hightower
ROXBORO, N.C. - Gertrude Warren Willis Hightower, 73, of 851 Semora Road, died Friday, May 31, 2002, at White Oak Manor in Burlington.
Born in Caswell County, she was the daughter of John Baptist and Maude Briggs Willis.
She was married to James Lawrence Hightower, who predeceased her. She was a member of the Longhurst United Methodist Church where she had been the church treasurer for a number of years. She was a member of the United Methodist Women and also helped with the flower and tape ministry for the shut-ins.
Survivors include three brothers, Clyde Willis of Leasburg, John D. Willis of Yanceyville, and Cleo Willis of Danville, Va.; and three sisters, Ruby Murray of Yanceyville, Dorothy Willis of Goldston, and Susie Kirby of Mebane.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Longhurst United Methodist Church with the Rev. Shannon Owens Ross officiating. Interment will follow at Union United Methodist Church cemetery in Leasburg.

DANVILLE, Va. - Beulah Hundley Melton, 80, of 5161 Golf Club Road, died Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at 1:45 p.m. at Lynchburg Medical Care Center in Lynchburg.
Born in Pittsylvania County, Virginia on October 15, 1921, she was the daughter of Posey Green and Mattie L. Buckner Hundley, both deceased.
She was married to Arnold Lee Melton, who died July 11, 1995. She was a member of Shermont Baptist Church where she taught the Adult Ladies Sunday School Class; was a choir member and a member of the Flower Committee. She had worked for Dan River, Inc.
Survivors include one son, Robert L. Melton of Rustburg, Va.; daughter-in-law, Mary Setliff Melton of Rustburg, Va.; brother and sister-in-law, Percey Allen and Nevada Hundley of Henderson, Ky.; grandchildren, Sandra Leigh Melton and Cathy Melton Phillips, both of Rustburg, Va.; great-grandchildren, Taylor Phillips and Madison Phillips, both of Rustburg, Va.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held Sunday, June 2, 2002, at 2:00 p.m. at Shermont Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Soyars officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens, Danville, Va.

Albert Morris
VIRGILINA, Va. - Albert Kenneth Morris, 78, of 3236 Wilson Road, died Friday, May 31, 2002, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born May 24, 1924, in Halifax County, he was the son of Willie Osborne Morris Sr. and Bessie Tuck Morris.
He was married to Lula W. Morris, who survives. He was a retired supervisor for Collins and Aikman and was a farmer. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a member of Union United Church of Christ where he served as a Deacon and was a former member of the Board of Directors.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of Virgilina, include one son, Waverly L. Morris of Virgilina; three brothers, Henry Morris, Gerald Morris, and Franklin Morris, all of Virgilina; and two sisters, Beatrice Buchanan of Clarksville and Barbara Holt of Cluster Springs.
He was predeceasd by four brothers, Thomas Morris, Woodrow Morris, Junior Morris, and David Morris.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Union United Church of Christ. Interment will follow at Virgilina Cemetery.

Luther Purgason
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Luther Samuel Purgason, age 85, passed away May 30, 2002 at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, VA, after a brief illness.
He was born December 3, 1916, in Reidsville, North Carolina to the late Pinkney Scott Purgason and Clemmie Throckmorton Purgason, also of Reidsville. He graduated from Practical Bible College, Binghamton, New York in 1940. He attained the rank of sergeant with the US Army (Headquarters Detachment Army Forces Middle Pacific) and was stationed in Hawaii. He retired from Binswanger Glass in Richmond, Virginia in 1982 and moved to Danville, VA where he resided until 2001. He was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church in Danville. In the fall of 2002, he moved to Charlottesville, VA and resided at RoseWood Village Assisted Living.
He is survived by his daughter, Barbara Price and son-in-law Charlie Price of Charlottesville; granddaughter Karen Price of Denver, Colorado; niece Yvonne Davis of Reidsville, NC; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. Dewey Matherly of the Danville area.
Funeral services will be held Monday, June 3, 2002 at 10:00 am at Woodlawn Baptist Church in Danville by the Rev. W.C. Blalock, followed by a graveside service at Danville Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home in Danville, Sunday, June 2, 2002 from 7:00 to 8:00 pm.
