Watson Compton
CLARKSVILLE, Va. - Watson Henry Compton, 69, died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at Halifax Regional Hospital in South Boston after weeks of hospitalization.
Born Feb. 10, 1932, in Vernon Hill, he was the son of James Otis Compton and Hester Mayhew Compton.
He was married
to Nancy Milam Compton, who survives. He graduated from Dan River High School and retired from the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Services after 15 years of service, later from People’s Oil Company.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include one daughter, Annette C. Lyle of Ringgold; two sons, Keith W. Compton of Anderson, S.C. and Alan B. Compton of Ringgold and seven grandchildren.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Gravel Hill cemetery in Buffalo Springs.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Virginia Baptist Children’s Home.

Hugh Ferrell Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Hugh Lee Ferrell, Sr., 81, of 2947 North Main Street, Danville, VA, died June 6, 2001, at 6:33 A.M., at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born December 24, 1919, Pittsylvania County, VA, he was the son of Charlie Prize Ferrell and Annie Collins Ferrell.
He was married
June 9, 1951, to Ann Glasgow Ferrell, of the residence. Mr. Ferrell was a Veteran of the US Navy, Carpenters Mate 1st Class and worked at Saunders Building Supply as a Cabinet Maker.
Survivors include one Daughter: Tina F. Early of Danville, VA; one Brother: Edward F. Ferrell of Danville, VA; one Sister: Peggy F. Evans of Burlington, NC; one Son-In-Law: Jeffrey Bryan Early of Danville, VA and one Granddaughter: Elizabeth Ann Early of Danville, VA.
He was predeceased by one Son: Hugh Lee "Buddy" Ferrell, Jr.
The funeral will be held Friday, June 8, 2001, at 2 PM at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dave Rochford officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Burial Park with Military Honors by American Legion Memorial Post #325 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends Thursday Night, 7:00 to 8:30 PM, at Barker Funeral Home Chapel and at other times the family will be at the residence.

Curtis D. Fitzgerald
KEELING, Va. - Curtis D. Fitzgerald, 59, of 3249 Malmaison Road, died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at the residence.
Born Sept. 2, 1941, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Sam Fitzgerald and Mary Watkins Fitzgerald.
He was married
to Janie Wiles Fitzgerald, who survives. He was a farmer.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of New York, include three sons, Marvin Fitzgerald, Gary Fitzgerald and Keith Fitzgerald, all of Brooklyn, N.Y.; four sisters, Viola Dixon, Alice Anthony and Jeannie McClain, all of Washington, D.C. and Ruth Roberts of Sea Pleasant, Md. and five brothers, James Fitzgerald of Fort Washington, Md., Herman Fitzgeald of the residence, Ernest Fitzgerald of Washington, D.C., Charlie Fitzgerald of Connecticut and Rev. Randolph Fitzgerald of Lanham, Md.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at the New Mine Creek Primitive Baptist Church with the Rev. Randolph Fitzgerald officiating. Interment
will follow in the Highland Burial Park.

Jack Hankins
Danville, Va. - James Lee “Jack” Hankins, 81, of 133 West Thomas Street, died Thursday, May 31, 2001 at his residence.
Mr. Hankins was born on September 26, 1919 in Charlotte Court House, the son of Walter Stacey Hankins and Birdie Wilson Hankins.
He was married
to Rady Earp Hankins who survives at the residence.
Mr. Hankins was retired from Dan River Mills where he was a Supervisor at the #5 Dye House. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving in the Sixth Armored Division in France, Belgium and Germany during World War II. Mr. Hankins was a member of the American Legion Post #325. He was a member of Shelton Memorial Presbyterian Church where he had formerly served as an elder. He was a member of the Piedmont Mall Walking Club as well as an avid hunter, fisherman and Braves Fan.
Besides his wife of the residence, Mr. Hankins is survived by two sons, James Michael "Mike" Hankins of Wesson, Miss.; and David Howard Hankins of Daville; two brothers, Gordon Hankins and Walter S. Hankins, Jr. both of Danville; three sisters, Katherine Metcalf of Rice; Elizabeth Hair and Josephine Motley, both of Danville; and two granddaughters, Rachael and Joanna Hankins of Wesson, Miss.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, June 3, 2001, 3:00 P.M. at Shelton Memorial Presbyterian Church. Rev. Paul Johnson will be conducting the services. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens. Military graveside honors will be given by the Honor Guard of the American Legion Post No. 325.
The family will receive friends, Saturday, June 2, 2001 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. at Townes Funeral Home.
Other times the family will be at the residence at 133 West Thomas Street.
Ralph Hundley
DANVILLE, Va. - Ralph Morris Hundley, 79, of 139 Lowell St., died Saturday, June 2, 2001, at the residence after six months of declining health.
Born Nov. 30, 1921, in Danville, he was the son of George A. Hundley and Hester Morris Hundley.
He was married
to Audrey Lumpkin Hundley, who predeceased him Jan. 27, 1999. He lived all of his life in Danville and was employed by Dan River Inc. for a number of years, later working for the City of Danville Public Works Department in Office and Building maintenance until his retirement. He was of the Baptist faith. He served with the United States Army during World War II and was awarded a number of medals and ribbons.
Survivors include one daughter, Frances Hundley Craddock of Thomasville, N.C.; one son, Frank Raymond Hundley of Vail, Ariz.; one sister, Doris H. Clark of Danville and one granddaughter.
He was predeceased, in addition to his wife and parents, by two brothers, Fred H. Hundley and E.C. "Joe" Hundley, and one sister, Louise Hundley Reynolds.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Dr. Leroy Clack officiating and with military honors by American Legion Post 1097 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Doris H. Clark, 245 Vicar Place, Danville.

PITTSVILLE, Va. - Haywood Johnson, 84, died Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at Lynchburg General Hospital.

George W. Jones
GRETNA, Va. - George William Jones, 96, of 318 Vaden Drive, died Friday, June 1, 2001.
Born May 22, 1905, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of William Amos Jones and Gillie Anne Dalton Jones.
He was first married
to Ethel Shelton Jones, who predeceased him, and he later married
Louise Keesee Jones, who survives. He was a member of Greenfield Baptist Church, retired Vice President of Crestar Bank in Gretna, 50 year member of Anderson Lodge No. 258 A.F. and A.M., and member of Order of Eastern Star Gretna Chapter No. 118.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of Gretna, include one stepson, Ted Bledsoe of Winston Salem, N.C.; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be held 4 p.m. Sunday at Anderson Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Charles Mallory and the Rev. R.G. Rowland officiating. Interment
will follow at Gretna Burial Park with Masonic rites performed by Anderson Lodge No. 258 A.F. and A.M.

Bud Joyce
DANVILLE, Va. - Thurman "Bud" Roscoe Joyce, 75, of 321 Brentwood Drive, died June 6, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center, after five years of declining health and nine days in the hospital.
Born Oct. 1, 1925, in Richlands, he was the son of Lillian Joyce Griffin, who survives.
He was first married
Oct. 16, 1947, to Mattie Wright Joyce, who predeceased him Sept. 30, 1999, and was married
Jan. 13, 2001, to Gertrude "Trudy" Young Joyce, who survives. He spent most of his life serving in the military before moving to Danville in 1971. He was a member of Keen Street Baptist Church and served with the United States Navy during World War II and the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War.
Survivors, in addition to his mother of Danville and wife of the residence, include two daughters, Vicky J. Wheelock of Holt, Mich. and Rhonda L. Young of Edinburg; one stepson, Craig S. Young of Abingdon; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Tom Brown officiating. Military Honors will be performed by the United States Air Force Honor Guard from Seymore Johnson Air Force Base.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and other times at the residence.

PLAINFIELD, N.J. - Mary O. Lacks, 67, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at Roosevelt Care Center in Edison.
Born in Halifax County, Va., she is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Robinson of Marlton and Barbara Jamison of North Plainfield; three sons, Lindwood Lacks Sr. and James Lacks, both of Plainfield, and Berkeley Lacks of Schenectady, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister, Katherine Adams of Baltimore, Md., and one brother, Morrell West of Nathalie, Va.
A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Monday at West Family cemetery in Nathalie, Va. with the Rev. James Traynham officiating.

Edward Lewis
DANVILLE, Va. - Edward Shaw Lewis died Monday afternoon June 4, 2001 at Riverside Health Care Center.
Mr. Lewis was born Nov. 22, 1916 at Sutherlin, VA to Elizah H. Lewis and Hattie Shaw Lewis.
He was married
to the late Erma Gant Lewis on Nov. 14, 1942.
He was a member of Blairs Baptist Church and the Poquoson Tribe #124 Improved Order of Redmen.
He was retired from Danville Dairy and Corning Glass.
He is survived by one son, Edward Troy Lewis and his wife Jettye Oakes Lewis whom he loved dearly, and who became his daughter. He is also survived by one brother, Earl Lewis of Providence, NC and three sisters, Ruby Watlington, Rebecca Cundiff, and Verna Lewis all of Danville, and survived by his friend, Betty Oakes Hyler of Danville.
He was predeceased by one son, Timothy Gant Lewis in Aug. 1994, and also predeceased by six brothers, Arthur, Elwood, Howard, Lloyd, Samuel and Ira Lewis.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Larry Pittman and Rev. Gilmer Setliff. Interment
will follow at Mountain View cemetery. The family received friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 7:00 - 8:30 P.M., and at other times at the home of his son, 130 Cline Street.
Shirley Loftis
DANVILLE, Va. - Shirley Jean Hammock Loftis, 61, died Friday June 2, 2001 at Salem Health and Rehabilitation Center, Salem.
Born Nov. 17, 1939, she was the daughter of Spencer Hammock and Ester Hatcher Hammock. She was married
to Joe Swanson Loftis, who survives. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors, in addition to her husband include two daughters, Jewel Loftis and Sylvia Doss both of Danville; four brothers, James S. Hammock of North Carolina, Sherman Hammock of Callands, Eddie Hammock and Delano Hammock both of Rocky Mount, Va.; four sisters, Lessie Sparks of Danville, Dorothy Pritchett of Dry Fork, Virginia Bauman of Florida and Rosa Lee Yupps of Rocky Mount and two grandchildren.
She is predeceased, in addition to her parents, by one sister, Margie Pruitt.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. E. Glenn Gentry officiating.
