Ellen Nelson
DANVILLE, Va. - Ellen Wann Nelson, age 89, of 880 Luna Lake Road, died Monday morning June 4, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Nelson was born in Washington County at Abingdon on December 30, 1911, a daughter of the late Joseph Wann and Betty Wann.
She was predeceased by her husband, Oscar Nelson.
Mrs. Nelson had spent most of her life in the Luna Lake Road community, and worked for nearly 40 years at Dan River, Inc. She was a member of the Kindom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses on Bell Drive.
She was the last member of her generation of the family.
Her only survivors are one granddaughter: Faith Stamps of Danville, and a son in law: Irvin L. Reynolds of Danville.
She was predeceased by a daughter, June Nelson Reynolds.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by Elder Jim White. Interment
will follow at the Nelson Family cemetery on Luna Lake Road. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 7:00-8:30 P.M., and at other times at the residence of her son in law, Irvin Reynolds at 882 Oak Tree Lane, off of Luna Lake Road.
Estelle Riddle
HOPEWELL, Va. - Estelle Aaron Riddle, 83, formerly of 149 Schoolfield Drive, Danville, died Saturday, June 2, 2001, at Hopewell Convalescent Home.
Born March 11, 1918, in Callands, she was the daughter of Edgar C. Aaron Sr. and Roxie Holley Aaron Spencer.
She was married
to Edward L. Riddle, who predeceased her. She lived most of her life in Danville where she worked for Dan River Inc. in No. 5 Sewing Room before her retirement in 1981. She was a member of Third Avenue Christian Church.
Survivors include two stepchildren, Alene R. Kay of Hampton and Carl E. Riddle of Martinez, Ga., and four step-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Rick Withrow officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home.

Purcell Robertson
ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Purcell Monk Robertson, 90, of Alexandria, died June 1, 2001 at the Mt. Vernon Nursing Center in Alexandria. She was born in Turbeville, Va., educated at Radford College, received a Masters Degree from Virginia Tech, and taught home economics in the Fairfax County School System from 1935 until retiring in 1965. Mrs. Robertson was active in Future Homemakers of America, a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority, and a member of the Washington Street United Methodist Church in Alexandria. She was married
to the late William T. Robertson who died in the late 1920s.
She is survived by five cousins, Elizabeth Delionback, Joseph Purcell, Nancy Law, John Purcell and Anne Morris.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 6, at 12:00 noon at Glenwood United Methodist Church with the Rev. Keith Motley and the Rev. Mike Teixeiro conducting the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Brownie Rosengarth
GRETNA, Va. - Brownie Mayhew Rosengarth, 99, of 397 Reese Loop Road, died Friday, June 1, 2001, at the residence.
Born Aug. 2, 1901, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of George Thomas Mayhew and Pencie Keesee Mayhew.
She was married
to Ernest Rosengarth, who predeceased her. She was a retired nursing supervisor and a member of Midway Baptist Church.
Survivors include one sister, Susie Willis of Gretna and one brother, Ike Mayhew of Capitol Heights, Md.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by five brothers, Frank Mayhew, Elwood Mayhew, Robert Mayhew, Calvin Mayhew and Morris "Moss" Mayhew.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Colbert-Moran Chapel with Dr. Lynn Marstin and Elder Marvin Brumfield officiating. Interment
will follow at Mayhew Family cemetery in Gretna.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service Sunday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Mary Royal
CHATHAM, Va. - Mary Sue Royal, 81, of 421 Moses Mill Road, died Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at Stratford Health Care in Danville.
Born Feb. 12, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Ned Mitchell and Lillian Hodnett Mitchell.
She was married
to Arthur Royal, who predeceased her. She was a homemaker and member of Calloway Level Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Clara Clements, Susie Fuller and Jean Jones, all of Chatham; one son, Herbert Royal of Danville and a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by one son, Clyde Royal; three sisters, Daisy Swanson, Christine Hubbard and Lillian Wainwright and six brothers, Robert, Posey, Richard, Russell, Bill and Sandy Mitchell.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Calloway Level Primitive Baptist Church with the Rev. Joseph Smith officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.

Lois Shields
SUTHERLIN, Va. - Lois Stevens Shields age 65 of 453 Slatesville Road, Chatham, Virginia died Sunday, June 3, 2001 at the Stratford Health Care Center. Mrs. Shields was born November 24, 1935 in Halifax, County. She was the daughter of the late Melvin ’Sunny Buck’ Stevens and is survived by her mother Lucille Edwards Stevens Lacks of Keeling. She was predeceased by her husband, Ray Vernon Shields. She is survived by her daughter, Vicky Rae Shields Moore and her husband James Thomas Moore, Jr., of Sutherlin; two sons, Robert Richard ’Bobby’ Jones and his wife Nancy Jones, of Vernon Hill and Allan Bruce Jones of Chatham; sister, Patsy S. Alderson and her husband Nathaniel Alderson, of Clover; two brothers, Jerry Stevens and his wife Betty Jean Stevens of Sutherlin and Roger Stevens of Keeling. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Sarah, Amy and Jim Jones. Mrs. Shields was a member of Shockoe Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, June 5, 2001 at 2:00 P.M. from the Scott Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Michael Huff and Mr. Curtis English. Interment

Lona Slayton
LONG ISLAND, Va. - Lona P. Slayton, 88, of 2080 Buffalo Road, died Friday June 1, 2001 at Brookneal Family Medical Center.
Born February 20, 1913, she was the daughter of Robert L. Pannell and Vinnie Miller Pannell.
She was married
to Howard Taft Slayton, who predeceased her.
She was a homemaker and a member of the First Buffalo Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Elizamae Isaacs of Long Island and Ollie Gilbert of Gladys, Va.; four sons, Ezekiel Slayton of Nathalie, David Slayton, Sterling Slayton and Calvin Slayton all of Long Island; two sisters, Fannie M. Campbell of Red House and Doretha Bright of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 27 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by one daughter, Margaret Thornton; two sons, Louis Slayton and Willie J. Slayton; four brothers, Junior Pannell, Isiah Pannell, Emmet Pannell and James Pannell; four sisters, Ollie Davis, Hattie Braxton, Elsie Waller and Lou Bettie Hubbard.
A funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday at the First Buffalo Baptist Church with the Rev. Samuel Mitchell officiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.
The body will lie in state noon -1 p.m. Tuesday.

Willie Solomon
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Willie Mae Solomon, 89, of 429 Crescent Drive, died Sunday, June 3, 2001, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born May 6, 1912, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Richard J. Solomon and Mertie S. Solomon.
She worked for Virginia Employment Commission as a secretary before her retirement and was a member of First Cross Roads Baptist Church.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by one sister, Virginia Doris Solomon, and two brothers, Willard C. Solomon and R. Frederick Solomon.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Cross Roads Baptist Church cemetery in Turbeville with the Rev. Leonard L. Southern and the Rev. Dan Ward officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel and other times at the residence of Faye Gosney, 1125 Solomon Road, Turbeville.

Luther Strader
DANVILLE, Va. - Luther Vann Strader, 80, of 833 Stokesland Ave. Extension, died Saturday, June 2, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 21, 1921, in Danville, he was the son of Arthur Randolph Strader and Rosa Mitchum Strader.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Air Force during the invasion of North Africa. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 1097 and the V.F.W.
He worked for Danville Dairy, Masonic Temple Corporation and Leeland Hotel before his retirement.
He was a member of Timberlake Baptist Church.
Survivors include one brother, Arthur Lee Strader of Danville.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Walter H. Yancey officiating. Interment
will follow at Mountain View cemetery with military honors performed by Honor Guard of American Legion Post No. 1097.

Rubin Strader Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Rubin Roy Payne Strader Sr., 67, of 300 Martin Road, Stokesland Community, died May 31, 2001, at Southside Community Hospital, Farmville.
Born May 4, 1934, in Danville, he was a son of William L. Strader and Minnie Sue Durham Strader.
He was formerly married
to Rita Ann Barker Williams, who survives. He worked for Leeland Hotel as a Desk Clerk and he was of the Baptist Faith.
He was a Veteran of the United States Air Force and National Guard.
Survivors include two sons, Roy P. Strader Jr. of Manassas and William W. Strader of Danville; two daughters, Carolyn S. Cassell and Sue S. East both of Danville; one sister, Mary Fuqua of Danville; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased in addition to his parents by one son, Bob Strader; one brother, Ira Strader; two sisters, Willie S. Boswell and Eunice S. Aherron and one grandson.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Pelham United Methodist Church cemetery, Pelham, N.C. with the Rev. Henry Taylor officiating. Graveside Military Honors will be performed by the American Legion Dan River Post 1097.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel and other times at the residence of Carolyn Cassell, 361 Jeanette Drive.

Lois Travis
CAPE CORAL, Fla. - Lois Graves Travis, 82, of 817 Monticello Court, died Monday, June 4, 2001, at Gulf Coast Hospital in Fort Myers.
Born April 4, 1919, in Greensboro, N.C., she was the daughter of Robert Graves and Etta Boger Graves.
She moved to Cape Coral in November 2000 after spending most of her life in Richmond, Va., and Danville, Va. She was retired from the Virginia State Correctional Institute and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Robert R. Travis of Cape Coral; one sister, Rubye Poore of Chatham, Va.; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. J. Richard Markham officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Greg Travis, 241 North Woodberry Ave.
