J. Howard Walton
DANVILLE, Va. - J. Howard Walton, 91, of 392 Stony Mill School Road, Danville, Virginia, died Monday, June 4, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center after one week of declining health and one week in the hospital.
Born July 24, 1909, in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, he was the son of Lester Walton (deceased) and Georgia Mae Rice Walton (deceased).
He was married
March 14, 1936, to Jessie R. Walton (deceased). He was a member of Sharon Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and as an Usher. He was a charter member of the Dan River Future Farmers of America and a charter member of the Brosville Ruitan Club. He was a member of the Robertson-Bennett Order of Eastern Star and the Kent Masonic Lodge No. 305. He lived most of his life in the Stony Mill Community of Pittsylvania County. He retired as superintendent of the Virginia Department of Highways after 46 years.
Survivors include daughter Judy W. Mangum & husband Bill Mangum, Danville, VA; daughter Wanda W. Farrar & husband James Farrar, Winston-Salem, N.C.; grandchildren Billy Mangum, Connie Daniel, Becky Corbin, Linda Thompson, Jill Parnell, & Jimmy Farrar, and 7 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Irvin W. Carter & Mary W. Fitzgeralds.
The funeral will be held 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, June 6th at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by The Reverend Allen Holder. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family received friends 7:00-8:30 P.M. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times at the residence, 392 Stony Mill School Road, Danville, Virginia.
Charlie Watts
NATHALIE, Va - Charlie Hannibal Watts, 84, of 4161 Hunting Creek Road, died June 1, 2001, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Dec. 3, 1916, he was the son of Charles Luther Watts and Jeraldine Wilkerson Watts.
He was married
to Mary Magdeline McKinney Watts, who survives.
He was a lifetime member of the Providence Presbyterian Church. He was a retired farmer and miller.
Survivors in addition to his wife of Nathalie, include one grandson and one great-grandchild.
He was predeceased, in addition, to his parents by one daughter, Elizabeth Ann Throckmoton; three sisters, Janie Bunaway, Maggie Gregger and Minnie Duffey; three brothers, Mitchell Watts, Walter Watts and Carl Watts.
The funeral will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Providence Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jeff Jones and the Rev. W.D. Mills officiating. Interment
will take place in the church cemetery.

Annie Wazeka
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. -Annie Lillian Riley Wazeka, 83, of 334-A Woodcrest Apartments, died Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born April 15, 1918, in Orange County, N.C., she was the daughter of Robert Riley and Annie Meadows Riley.
She was married
to Teddy P. Wazeka, who survives. She was a member of Ingram Memorial Pentecostal Holiness Church and was a homemaker.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of South Boston, include four sons, Robert C. Wazeka, William Cecil Wazeka and Wallace Oliver Wazeka, all of South Boston and Anthony R. Wazeka of Clarksville; one daughter, Barbara W. Newcomb of Scottsburg; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by one son, Teddy George Wazeka.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Halifax Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Robert Heim and the Rev. Mike Wetherington officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Brooks Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Fleming Wells
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Fleming Edward "Pete" Wells, 85, of 1600 Fenton St., died Sunday, June 3, 2001, at Duke University Hospital.
Born Aug. 6, 1915, in Person County, N.C., he was the son of Fleming Edward Wells Sr. and Sarah Elizabeth Spencer Wells.
He was married
to Anna Catherine Woodall Wells, who survives.
He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church and was retired from Dimon Tobacco Company. He was a World War II United States Army veteran.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of South Boston, include two sisters, Louise E. Wells and Lottie W. Skiles, both of Richmond.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Main Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Doug Martin officiating. Interment
will follow at Oak Ridge cemetery.

DANVILLE, Va. - Ann Elizabeth Williams Wilson, 59, of 209 Watson St., died Monday, June 4, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 31, 1941, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Helen Williams, who survives. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church where she served on the usher board and the missionary group. She worked at Dibrell Brothers Inc.
Survivors include her mother of Danville.
The funeral will be held 3 p.m. Friday at Trinity Baptist Church with the Rev. Walter Griffin and the Rev. William Dixon officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Tiller Abbott
DANVILLE, Va. - Tiller S. Abbott, 97, of 906 Vicar Road, died Saturday, June 9, 2001, at Roman Eagle Memorial Nursing Home.
Born Oct. 8, 1903, in Franklin County, she was the daughter of Robert Lee Sigmon and Minnie Sloane Sigmon Thornton.
She was married
in 1918 to Elisha B. Abbott, who predeceased her in 1962. She was a member of Afton Road Primitive Baptist Church and was a housewife.
Survivors include two daughters, Dovie "Bootsie" Ferrell and Doris Tilghman, both of Danville; three sons, Bob Abbott, Tom Abbott and Curtis Abbott, all of Danville; 20 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by one daughter, Mary Frances Fleming, and two sons, Billy Abbott and Raymond Abbott.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Highland Burial Park with Elder Danny Parker and the Rev. Dr. David Palmer officiating.

James Barker Jr.
RIDGEWAY, Va. - James Thomas Barker Jr., 60, of 940 Mica Road died Friday, June 8, 2001 at the residence.
Born July 5, 1940, in Eden, N.C., he was the son of James Thomas Barker Sr. and Delitha Skinell Barker Cox, who survives. He was married
to Catherine Alice English Barker, who survives. He worked at Bassett Chair Company for four years and was a member of Full Gospel Evangelist Tabernacle, Bassett.
Survivors, in addition to his mother and his wife of Draper, include three daughters, Pearlie Lucille Horton of Ridgeway, Mary Jane Gallimore of Draper and Rebecca Ann Bray of Spartanburg, S.C.; two sons, James Thomas Barker III and Anthony Wayne Barker, both of Ridgeway; six sisters, Dorothy Bray of Spartanburg, S.C., Kathy Blair of Axton, Janice Collins, Ruby Dale Barker and Patty Ruth Sheets all of Danville and Connie Mullins of North Carolina; seven brothers, Cody Barker, Patrick Barker, Ruben Barker and Frank Barker, all of Danville, Johnny Barker of Spartanburg, S.C., George Barker and Fount Barker, both of Axton and 15 grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his father, by one grandson.
The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Collins Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Elwood Gallimore officiating. Interment
will follow at Mountain View cemetery, Ridgeway.

GRETNA, Va. - Lillie Maude Brooks Berger, 88, of 1712 Telegraph Road, died Monday, June 11, 2001, at Piney Forest Health Care.
Born Aug. 12, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Charles Burks and Margie Brooks.
She was a homemaker and member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Gretna Branch.
Survivors include two sons, Reuben W. Neal and John D. Neal, both of Gretna; three daughters, Mavis N. Brooks and Nancy N. Reese, both of Gretna, and Gladys N. Franklin of Bluefield, W.V.; three sisters, Annis King of Long Island, Ada Boley of Lynch Station and Angel O’Conner of Hurt; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by one sister, Pearl Tucker; three brothers, Price Brooks, Jack Brooks and Charles Brooks Jr., and one grandson.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Colbert-Moran Chapel with the Rev. R.G. Rowland officiating. Interment
will follow at Adams-Neal Family cemetery.

Lucile Bushnell
PARMA, Ohio - Lucile Neathery Bushnell "Helen", 84, died June 9, 2001, at Parma Community General Hospital in Parma.
Born Aug. 9, 1916, in Danville, Va., she was the daughter of Oscar Cabble Neathery and Callie Frances Atkins.
She was married
to James M. Bushnell Jr., who predeceased her. She was a member of Ridge Road United Church of Christ and was Captain of Nursing Corps World War II United States Army. She lived in Danville until 1940 and attended Dan River High School and Memorial School of Nursing.
Survivors include two daughters, Cynthia Bushnell of Warren, Ohio, and Helen "Bonnie" Bushnell of Parma; one son, Charles Edward Bushnell of Canton, Ohio, and four grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her husband and parents, by one son, James Bushnell III.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Mallchok Funeral Home, 5660 Ridge Road, Parma. A private interment will follow at Arlington National cemetery in Arlington, Va.
The family will receive friends 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Mallchok Funeral Home.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a nursing scholarship fund to be established in her name at Memorial School of Nursing in Danville, Va.

Clayborne Callands
GRETNA, Va. - Clayborne Callands, 64, of 1280 Greenview Apartments, died Monday, June 11, 2001, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born April 22, 1937, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Myrtle Callands, who survives, and Buster Callands.
He worked for Adams Welding Company in Gretna and was a member of Mt. Airy Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to his mother of Gretna, include one daughter, Frances Carter of Lynchburg; one son, James Davis of Altavista; two sisters, Cleo Thompson of Gretna and Verna Mae Miller of Roanoke, and two brothers, James Callands of Gretna and Tardie Callands of Altavista.
He was predeceased, in addition to his father, by two brothers, George Callands and Walter Lee Callands.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Miller Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. R.P. King officiating. Interment
will follow at Mt. Airy Baptist Church cemetery.
