DANVILLE, Va. - Gurnie Edward Rich, 80, of 204 Rockford Place, died Thursday, June 14, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C..
Born June 1, 1921, in Bladen County, N.C., he was the son of Gurnie Amos Rich and Lillie Dunn Rich Sparks.
He was first married
to Mertha Gibson Rich, who predeceased him Nov. 26, 1983. He is now married
to Idellas M. Rich, who survives. He was a veteran of WWII having served in the United States Army, he was a former member of American Legion Post 1097. He was a retired pipefitter and member of Pipefitter Union Local #460. He was a member of Schoolfield Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include one son, Michael Rich of Danville; one stepson, Gerald Hutcherson of Lexington, Ky.; two stepdaughters, Trudy Rains of Virginia Beach, and Diana Brown of Fort Worth, Texas; one half brother, Rayford Sparks of Providence, N.C.; one sister, Isabelle Rich Adkins of Kinston, N.C. and five step grandchildren and four step great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents and first wife, by three brothers, Marvin Rich, John Rich and Colon Rich; two sisters, Pearl Thornton and Kathlyn Kirks.
The funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday June 17, 2001 at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. David Turbyfill and Dr. John La Rue officiating. Interment
will follow in Highland Burial Park. Military graveside honors will be given by the Honor Guard of American Legion Post No. 1097.
The family recieved friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Townes Funeral Home and will receive other times at the residence.

Letitia Strange
VERNON HILL, Va. - Letitia Parke Spencer Strange, of 12115 Mountain Road, died Sunday, June 17, 2001, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of William Draper Spencer and Annie Shelton Spencer.
She was married
to James Hudson Strange.
Survivors include four daughters, Harriette C. Smith of Annapolis, Md., Sidney C. Barker of Mooresville, N.C., Patricia S. Tanksley of Ringgold and Kay Strange Ford of Halifax; one son, James Hudson Strange Jr. of Raleigh, N.C., and 11 grandchildren.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Carl Burger officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Powell Funeral Home.

Andelear Williams
BLAIRS, Va. - Andelear “Bae“ Farmer Williams, 76, of 1900 Malmaison Road died Thursday, June 14, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 26, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of George Farmer and Mary Eliza Fountain Farmer.
She was married
to Albert Williams, who predeceased her. She was employed at Dibrell Brothers.
Survivors include three daughters, Gladys Williams of the residence, Shirley Fitzgerald and Louise Breedlove, both of Danville; one sister, Geneva Glaze of Danville; one brother, Jeremiah Farmer of Blairs, and numerous grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Monday at the Word of Faith Apostolic Church, 123 Doll Branch Road, Milton, N.C., with the Bishop Edward Breedlove officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park cemetery.

Gerdlene Wilson
DANVILLE, Va. - Gerdlene Moore Wilson, 84, of 2526 North Main St., Roman Eagle Memorial Home, died Tuesday, June 19, 2001, at the residence after four years of declining health and two years at Roman Eagle.
Born July 29, 1916, in Danville, she was the daughter of Raleigh Moore and Ella Pruitt Moore.
She was married
to Casey Herman Wilson, who predeceased her in June 1976. She lived her entire life in Danville and worked at Little Chef Diner before her retirement. She was a member of The Tabernacle.
Survivors include one daughter, Jean W. Weaver of Danville; four sons, Kerman Wilson, Vernelle Wilson, Curtis Lee Wilson and Steven Wilson, all of Danville; one sister, Helen Moore of North Carolina; 20 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by one son, Herman Casey Wilson; two sisters, Thelma Dewberry and Cathleen Lumpkin and two brothers, Doney Moore and Leonard Moore.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Jack Robertson and the Rev. Albert Moser officiating.

DANVILLE, Va. - Lena Brumfield Burgess, 88, of Roman Eagle Memorial Home, died Friday, June 22, 2001 at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after eight years of declining health.
Born Feb. 17, 1913 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Richard Anderson Brumfield and Mannie Haythe Brumfield.
She was married
to Howard Scott Burgess, who predeceased her Aug. 21, 1970. She lived in the Ringgold Community her entire life and prior to her retirement owned and operated a dairy farm. She was a member of Ringglold Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter Barbara B. Ellis of Texas; one sister Lola B. Tanis of Danville and one grandchild.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by three sisters, Nell B. Bragg, Lucy B. Lewis, and Janie B. Gibson and four brothers, Willie Brumfield, Otis Brumfield, Percy Brumfield, and Calvin Brumfield.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Carl E. Burger officiating.

Hazel Coleman
CHATHAM, Va. - Hazel Coleman, 72, of 7153 Halifax Road, died Thursday, June 21, 2001, at the residence.
Born Dec. 14, 1928, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Harry Coleman and Flossie Fitzgerald Coleman.
She was a retired employee of the United States Postal Service in Washington, D.C. and was a member of the Shockoe Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Myra Williams of Maryland; two sons, Kelvin Coleman of Richmond and Mickey Roger Coleman of Columbia, Md.; one sister, Hilda Canada of Sharon Hill, Penn. and four grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by two brothers, Charles David and Harry Edward Coleman.
The funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Monday at Shockoe Baptist Church with the Rev. Kevin M. McNeill officiating. Interment
will follow in the Hillcrest Burial Park in Chatham.

DANVILLE, Va. - Ruth Lee Motley Daughrity, 81, of 224 Courtland St., Apt. No. 235, died Tuesday, June 19, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center after ten days of declining health and ten days in the hospital.
Born Nov. 8, 1919, in Dry Fork, she was the daughter of Ballard Motley and Callie Meadows Motley.
She was married
April 9, 1944, to Burney Hugh Daughrity, who predeceased her Dec. 11, 1982. She lived in Danville and Pittsylvania County and worked for the State Department of Education for 19 years and worked for R.J. Baldwin Agency Inc. prior to her retirement. She was a member of Central Boulevard Church of God where she taught Sunday School, was church secretary, was a member of the choir and worked with Outreach Ministry. She attended Averett College and Danville Community College where she majored in Business Science. She also did volunteer work with Riverside Health Care. She was a veteran of the United States Army, W.A.C. detachement, during World War II.
Survivors include two daughters, Ruth Ann Ball of Danville and Virginia L. McRoberts of North Augusta, S.C.; one sister, Mildred S. Parsons of Chatham; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by three brothers, Samuel P. Motley, Hartwell Motley and William Motley and two sisters, Annie Leafy Giles and Cordie E. Pergerson.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Central Boulevard Church of God with the Rev. John Meadows and the Rev. Monroe Horne officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens with Military Honors performed by American Legion Post 325.

DANVILLE, Va. - Ellis W. Fitzgerald, 64, 528 Madison St. died Sunday, June 10, 2001, at the residence.
Born Aug. 15, 1936, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Ed Fitzgerald and Louise Scott.
He was married
to Margie Fitzgerald, who survives. He was a laborer for the City of Roanoke.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of Baltimore, include one sister, Louise Grimes of Blairs.
The memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Sunday at Cunningham and Hughes Memorial Chapel with minister Joseph Moore Jr. officiating.

William Greenwood
VERNON HILL, Va. - Mr. William Irving (Bill) Greenwood of 1017 Ridge Road, Vernon Hill, VA died June 23, 2001 at Danville Regional Hospital.
He was born in Halifax County, VA on November 10, 1914 and was 86 years old.
He was the son of Mr. Willie Henry Greenwood and Mrs. Natalie Croxton Greenwood and was married
first to Evelyn Lacks Greenwood and then to Louise Adams Greenwood. He was a lifetime member of the Mt. Vernon Baptist Church where he was a deacon and a Sunday School teacher, a former president of the Virginia Rural Letter Carriers Association, a former moderator of the Dan River Baptist Association, member of the Woodmen of the World Camp 127, member of the Halifax Masonic Lodge, and a World War II Army Air Corp Veteran.
Mr. William Irving (Bill) Greenwood is survived by: one daughter Mrs. Carol G. Trejo of Tucson, Arizona; two sons Rev. Dr. William Irving Greenwood, Jr. of Winston-Salem, NC, Mr. Paul Croxton Greenwood of Midlothian, VA, one step-daughter Mrs. Delores W. Reynolds of Danville, four grandchildren Kevin Greenwood of Chapel Hill, NC, Emily Greenwood of Winston-Salem, NC, Paul Brian Greenwood of Raleigh, NC, Ann Laney Greenwood Swank of Knoxville, TN, two great grandchildren Kenan and Brayden Greenwood of Chapel Hill, NC.
Funeral services for Mr. William Irving (Bill) Greenwood will be held Tuesday at 11:00 AM with services at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, Vernon Hill, VA with the Rev. Bill Wilkins and the Rev. Dib Mills conducting the service.
Burial will take place in the church cemetery.

Clarence Huffstetler
DANVILLE, Va. - Clarence Walter Huffstetler, 90, of 501 Cliff St. died Monday, June 25, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center after six months of declining health and eight days in the hospital.
Born July 24, 1910, in Danville, he was the son of Miles Andrew Huffstetler and Emma Susan Jerrell Huffstetler.
He was married
March 21, 1940, to Beatrice Browning Huffstetler, who survives.
He lived most of his life in Danville where he worked 41 years as a loom fixer in Dan River Mills, retiring at age 62.
He was a faithful member and taught Sunday School at Faith Memorial Baptist Church.
He was the last member of his generation.Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three sons, Roy L. Browning of McLean, Clarence W. Huffstetler Jr. of Colorado Springs, Col. and James A. Huffstetler of Danville; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Daniel Lackey officiating.
