DANVILLE, Va. - Helen Bennett Tench of Penhook died Sunday, June 24, 2001 at the Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born, Sept. 18, 1912, in Glade Hill, she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Abner Bennett.
She was married
for 53 years to Orren Kinsey Tench, who predeceased her. She was an elementary school teacher in Franklin County for many years.
Survivors include three daughters, Betty T. Ellis of Danville, Joann T. Meeks of Williamsburg and Darnell T. Barnes of Roanoke; one son, Orren K. Tench Jr. of Wethersfield, Conn.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Flora Funeral Service Chapel with Elder Raymond Goad officiating. Interment
will follow in Franklin Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Flora Funeral Service in Rocky Mount.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to The Hatcher Center 7180 U.S. Highway 29, N, Blairs, Va. 24527.

Paul Thacker
DANVILLE, Va. - Paul Alexander Thacker, 83, of 128 Woodside Road, died Tuesday, June 19, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center after five years of declining health and eight days in the hospital.
Born June 10, 1918, in Leesville, he was the son of Jasper Warner Thacker and Flossie Sink Thacker.
He was married
June 10, 1948, to Ruby Fowlkes Powell Thacker, who survives. He was a member of The Tabernacle, a life member of American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor Inc., V.F.W. Post 647 and American Legion Post 325. He was a member of Poquoson Tribe No. 124 Improved Order of Redmen and life member of Archer T. Gammon Post 19, Disabled American Veterans. He lived most of his life in Ringgold and Danville and worked for Dan River Mills Inc. in the card room until his retirement due to disability. He was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II. He was a survivor of the Bataan Death March and was held by the Japanese as a prisoner of war for three and a half years.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include three daughters, Betty Powell Shackelford of Fayetteville, N.C., Nancy Thacker Hankins of Danville and Shiela Thacker Compton of Ringgold; two sons, Paul A. Thacker II of Durham, N.C. and Kenneth Michael "Mike" Thacker of Danville; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Lamarr Mooneyham officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens with Military Honors by the American Legion Post 325.

Ollie Thompson
KEELING, Va. - Ollie White Thompson, 88, of Mt. Tabor Road, died Friday morning, June 22, 2001, at Riverside Health Care Center after six years of declining health. She had resided at the nursing home for four years.
Born Feb. 18, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John B. White and Caudie Anderson White.
She was married
Dec. 26, 1937, to Willie Lynwood Thompson, who predeceased her Sept. 2000. She spent most of her life in the Keeling community and was a member of Old Mill Primitive Baptist Church. She was a sales lady at Belk’s for 15 years before retiring at the age of 68.
Survivors include one son, Ronald J. Thompson of Danville; one daughter, Elaine T. Sheltonof of Eustis, Fl.; one brother, Jessie White of Sutherlin; two sisters, Hazel Shelton of Danville and Beulah Layne of Greensboro, N.C. three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by one brother, Jameson C. White and two sisters, Daisy W. Powk and Emily W. Scearce.
The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Elder Norval Mann officiating and Elder Lonnie Mozingo Jr. assisting. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of her son, 4017 Bridgewood Drive.

Gertrude Williams
RINGGOLD, Va. - Gertrude Gunn Williams, 85, of 1453 Ringgold Depot Road, died Wednesday, June 20, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 15, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Charlie Gunn and Maggie Saunders Gunn. She was married
to Norman Williams, who survives. She was employed by Dibrell Brothers for many years prior to her retirement.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include five daughters, Violet Williams of Washington, D.C., Josephine Perkins of the residence, Mary Ferrel and Minnie Eva White, both of Danville and Cecil Grasty of Ringgold; two sons, Norman Williams Jr. of Danville and Eddie Williams of Upper Marlboro, Md.; one sister Lilie Graves of Blairs and numerous grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by one daughter, Ruby Harris and one son, Percy Gunn.
The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the Bibleway Church Worldwide Cathedral with Apostle Lawrence Campbell Sr. officiating. Interment
will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens cemetery.

Inez Williams
DANVILLE, Va. - Inez Virginia Poindexter Williams, 82, of 310 Third Avenue, died June 23, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center after one year of declining health and three weeks at the hospital.
Born Dec. 25, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of William Dudley Poindexter Sr. and Sallie Hodges Poindexter.
She was married
to Joseph C. Williams, who predeceased her Dec. 15, 1983. She lived her entire life in Pittsylvania County and Danville where she was a homemaker. She was a member of Keen Street Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Roger H. Williams of Midlothian and James E. “Jim” Williams of Danville; one daughter, JoAnn W. Cooper of Hickory, N.C.; one brother, William Dudley Poindexter Jr. of Milton, N.C.; two sisters, Ada P. Wilson of Danville and Melba P. Moschler of Ringgold and three grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. George Rumney and the Rev. Thomas Wright officiating. Interment
will follow in Highland Burial Park.

DANVILLE, Va. - Virginia Dare Sours Willis, 91, formerly of 542 Cedarbrook Drive, died Friday afternoon, June 22, 2001, at Riverside Health Care Center where she had resided since Feb. 28, 1992.
Born Sept. 16, 1909, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Paul Allen Sours and Eula Hall Sours.
She was married
to James William Willis, who predeceased her March 16, 1974. She spent most of her life in Danville where she retired in 1971 from Dan River Inc. She was a member of Ferry Road Friends Church where she formerly served on the board and taught Sunday School until her health failed.
Survivors include two sons, J. Paul Willis of Danville and Edward “Ed” Willis of West Chicago, Ill.; three daughters, Margaret “Meg” Carpenter and Joyce Setliff, both of Danville and Glenda Crowder of Lynchburg; 13 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Linwood Hairfield Sr. and the Rev. Robert Carpenter officiating. Interment
will follow at Mountain View cemetery.

Virgie Williams
DANVILLE, Va. - Virgie Davis McGuire Williams, 82, of 50 Glen Oak Drive died Monday, June 25, 2001, at Stratford Health Care Center after four months of declining health.
Born May 6, 1919, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Luther Davis and Maude Robertson Davis.
She was married
first to the Rev. Gollard Lee McGuire, who predeceased her, then to the Rev. Herbert Williams, who survives.
She lived most of her life in Danville and was retired from Dan River Mills where she worked in No. 3 Card. She attended Westover Church of God.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of Roanoke, include two daughters, Darlene Worley and Donna Carter, both of Danville; four sons, Bobby McGuire, Wayne McGuire, David McGuire and Danny McGuire, all of Danville; one brother, Matthew Davis of Atlanta, Ga.; three sisters, Essie Davis, Emma Shotwell and Pearl Yeaman, all of Danville; 23 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and first husband, by two daughters, Rosa Mae McGuire and Hilda Bivens; two brothers, Floyd Davis and Clark Davis; and two sisters, Lessie Davis and Dorothy Pinnix.
The funeral will be held 4 p.m. Wednesday at Westover Church of God with the Rev. Griffin Duncan and the Rev. Michael Bivens. Interment
will follow at Schoolfield cemetery.

Henry Baboun
DANVILLE, Va. - Henry Joseph Baboun, 69, of 411 Skyline Drive, died Thursday, June 28, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center after three months of declining health.
Born, Dec. 8, 1931, in Port Au Prince Haiti, he was the son of Victor Baboun and Puncha Baboun.
He was married
March 22, 1952, to Ida Martha Owens Baboun, who survives. He lived in Haiti prior to moving to Danville to live over 20 years. He was a dry goods merchant until his retirement and leaving Haiti. He was of the Catholic faith.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Henry Baboun Jr. of Ringgold and Johnny Anthony Baboun Sr. of Danville and 10 grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by two sons and two daughters.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete. A private memorial service will be conducted at a later date.

Myrtle Bibee
RINGGOLD, Va. - Myrtle Burnett Bibee, 90, of 2019 Mountain Hill Road, died Thursday, June 28, 2001, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after three months of declining health.
Born Nov. 10, 1910, in Henry County, she was the daughter of Robert Barksdale Burnett and Emma Haley Burnett.
She was married
April 16, 1926, to Joel L. Bibee, who predeceased her. She lived all of her life in Danville and Pittsylvania County. She retired from the Schoolfield Division of Dan River Inc., where she worked as a Spinner with over 28 years of service. She attended the Non-Denominational Christian Tabernacle in the Mountain Hill Community.
Survivors include three sons, Jimmy Bibee of Henderson, N.C., Roy Lee Bibee Sr. of Ringgold, and David Leon Bibee of Danville; four daughters, Margaret B. Helfquist of Schaumburg, Ill., Peggy B. Hamlett of Kernsville, N.C., Annie Sue B. Goins of Ringgold, and Betty Lou B. Gibson of Hope Mill, N.C.; one sister, Elizabeth B. Joyce of Greensboro, N.C.; 21 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by one daughter, Helen B. Underwood.

Walter Campbell
DANVILLE, Va. - Walter Douglas Campbell, 76, of 120 Old Piney Forest Road, Lot 38, died June 26, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center after three years of declining health and one day in the hospital.
Born Sept. 14, 1924, in Ruffin, N.C., he was the son of Willie Marvin Campbell and Mabel New Campbell.
He was married
July 23, 1963, to Martha Vicks Campbell, who survives. He lived all of his life in Danville and retired from Dan River Inc. Schoolfield Division, where he worked in the 4-B Dress on a DrawTex machine. He worked for Roman Eagle Memorial Home as a security guard for ten years after his retirement and was a former member of Glen Oak and Ringgold Golf Clubs. He was a member of Tabernacle but attended Central Boulevard Church of God for several years. He served in the United States Army during World War II.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include three daughters, Janice C. Chaney of Ringgold, Debra C. Carr and Darlene C. Wilkins, both of Danville; two brothers, Lester Campbell of Danville and William Campbell of Blairs; four sisters, Lois C. Stierwalt of Norfolk, Gloria C. White of Massachusetts, Dorothy C. Dickerson of Virginia Beach and Rachel C. Emerson and three grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by one brother, Richard Campbell.
The funeral will be held 4 p.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. John Meadows, the Rev. Freddy Vicks and the Rev. R.J. Barber Jr. officiating. Interment
