Patsy Setliff
DANVILLE, Va. - Patsy Dallas Setliff, 69, of 462 Cedarbrook Drive, died Thursday, May 30, 2002, at the residence.
Born April 18, 1933, in Pittsylvania County, Spring Garden Community, she was the daughter of the late Robert Jefferson Dallas and the late Hontas Wells Dallas.
She was married May 22, 1959, to Marion F. Setliff, who survives. Mrs. Setliff was a graduate of Spring Garden High School. She was a weaver at Dan River Mills for forty years until her retirement at age 58 on disability. She was a member of Forest Lawn Baptist Church. She had been in declining health for the past year.
Survivors include one daughter, Sandy Setliff Collins of Danville; one son-in-law, Wade Collins of Danville; one sister, Kitty Dallas Hollifield of Lynchburg; and 2 grandchildren, Ashley Collins and Andrew Collins.
She was predeceased by one sister, Juanita Frazier.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, June 1, 2002, at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Daryl Joyce and the Rev. Steve Dalton officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family received friends Friday, May 31, 2002 from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. at Swicegood Funeral Home and will receive friends at other times at the residence.

Gracie Lee Stone
DANVILLE, Va. - Gracie Lee Stone, 73, of 688 Holland Road, died Thursday, May 30, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Hospital.Born September 11, 1928, she was a daughter of Dwight William Stone Sr. and Dora Alice Stone.She worked for Dan River Mills in the inspection department.She is survived by one brother, Iky Jarvis Stone and wife, Treva of Huntersville, N.C.; two nieces, Joy Stone and Tiffany Phillips, both of Huntersville, N.C. and two nephews, Randy Stone of Huntersville, N.C. and Raymond Lee Holder III of Newark, Delaware; two great-nieces, Courtney Bryant and Haley Stone, both of Huntersville, N.C. and four great-nephews, Dustin Bryant, Cody Bryant, Jonathan Stone and Devin Bryant, all Huntersville, N.C.
Pamela Taylor
EVINGTON, Va. - Pamela Haley Taylor, 47, of Route 2, died Thursday morning, May 30, 2002, at the residence.
Born Sept. 12, 1954, in Campbell County, she was the daughter of Ozella Smith, who survives, and William Haley.
She was affiliated with the Jehovah's Witness, Bedford Branch.
Survivors, in addition to her mother, include one son, Avery Taylor of Richmond; two brothers, Herman Haley of Roanoke and George Haley of Baltimore, Md.; two sisters, Ealon Briggs of Richmond and Annette Haley of California.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Sunday at Miller Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at the Douglas Family Cemetery in Bedford County.

Robert Troy
DANVILLE, Va. - Robert James Troy, 63, of Danville, died 3:02 p.m. Thursday, May 30, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born in Alamance County, N.C., he was the son of Robert Marshall Troy and Martha Belle James Troy.
He was married to Nancy Hager Troy, who survives. He was a retired high school history teacher at Chatham High School from 1969-1992. His family was one of the founding members of the former West Burlington United Methodist Church. He graduated from Elon College in 1961.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include one daughter, Rebekah Pulley of Danville; and one son, Stephen Troy of Danville.
He was predeceased by one daughter, Victoria Ruth Troy.
The graveside service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Pine Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 1-2:45 p.m. Sunday at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington and following the graveside service, the family will be at the residence of Charles Burgess, 545 Central Ave. in Burlington, N.C.

Marie T. VanAlst
DANVILLE, Va. - Marie T. VanAlst, 84, of 165 Sweetbriar Drive, died 1:12 a.m. Friday, May 24, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Nov. 8, 1917, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Phillip Arden and Winnie Mae Childress Tarpley.
She was married to Reuben VanAlst, who predeceased her. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include one son, Phillip VanAlst of Honolulu, Hawaii; six sisters, Louise Ricketts of Danville, Frances Shelton of Greensboro, N.C., Bernice Kent of Tennessee, Dorothy McNeely of Emeral Isle, N.C., June Rowan of Seattle, Wash., and Phyllis Zinna of San Diego, Calif.
She was predeceased by one sister, Lena Stowe.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Bennett Shelton officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 12-1:30 p.m. Saturday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel, 2025 N. Main St. in Danville.

Oscar F. Adkins Jr.
DRY FORK, Va. - Oscar F. Adkins Jr., 44, of 8804 Franklin Turnpike, died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, at his residence.
Born Jan. 29, 1958, in Danville, he was the son of Oscar F. Adkins Sr., who predeceased him in 1977 and Irene Lewis Adkins, who survives.
He lived most of his life in the Blairs community, where he worked in the family grocery business, R.N. Adkins & Son General Merchandise. He worked at American National Bank & Trust from 1981-1991 as a teller and later in collections. In 1991, he joined the staff of Swicegood Funeral Home, where he worked primarily in the business office.
He was a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday School, served as treasurer from 1987-2001 and served as Lay Speaker and Lay Leader for many years.
He was a member of Carter Masonic Lodge #323 A.F. & A.M. in Blairs, serving as Worshipful Master in 1994.
He married Phyllis Hearp Adkins on June 18, 1994.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Ottoway F. Adkins of the residence and two brothers, Charles W. Adkins and Robert T. "Bob" Adkins, both of Blairs.
In addition to his father, he was predeceased by a brother, William "Bill" Adkins, in 1972.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Stanley C. Pique, the Rev. James L. Gravely III and the Rev. Dr. Leroy Clack officiating. Interment with Masonic rites by Carter Masonic Lodge #323 A.F. & A.M. will be held in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 8804 Franklin Turnpike, Dry Fork, and at the residence of his mother, 8545 U.S. Highway 29, Blairs.

Geraldine Aaron Fulcher
MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Geraldine Aaron Fulcher, 87, died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003 at Wake Forest University Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C., after a brief illness.
Born May 12, 1915, in Leaksville, N.C., she was the daughter of Ralph and Nannie Aaron, who predeceased her.
She was a charter member of Calvary Christian Church. She was active in Piedmont Arts and various quilting and embroidery groups.
She retired after working several years for Dr. S.W. Adams in Martinsville.
She was married to Clyde Fulcher, who predeceased her.
She is survived by one son, Bill Fulcher of Danville; two daughters, Sandra Puckett of Stoneville, N.C. and Mary Beth Shively of Ferrum, VA; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by two brothers, Alfred and James Clinton Aaron and three sisters, Carnell Hall, Valeria Misenheimer and Louise Hall.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Calvary Christian Church, Mulberry Road with the Rev. Eldon Morgan and the Rev. Arthur Beam officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Norris Funeral Home.

Dot Lowe
DANVILLE, Va. - Dorothy Scearce Lowe, 70, formerly of 184 Lambert Drive, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, in the Piney Forest Health Care Center after being in declining health for the past 12 months.
Born March 17, 1932, in Fredricksburg, she was the daughter of Beaumont W. Scearce and Louise Walker Scearce.
She had lived in Fredricksburg prior to moving to Danville, where she lived most of her life.
She was employed by Dan River, Inc. for a period of time before becoming a full-time homemaker. She was of the Catholic faith.
She married James L. Lowe in June 1950. He predeceased her in 1974.
She is survived by two sons, James (Tony) Lowe of Wilmington, N.C. and Monte Lowe of Clemons, N.C.; three daughters, Scarlett L. Duncan, Lisa L. Aherron and Tammy L. Smith, all of Ringgold; one sister, Nayden S. Hayden of Fredricksburg; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with Father Christopher Davis and Fannie Lowe, Missionary, officiating.
A private interment will be held at a later date.
The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel. At other times they will be at the residence of her daughter Lisa and Todd Aherron, 317 Cedar Road, Ringgold.

Montario Ernest Payne
DANVILLE, Va. - Montario Ernest Payne, 17, 1302 Betts Street, died Friday, January 10, 2003.
Born Oct. 20, 1985, in Danville, he was the only son of Linwood Payne Jr. and Ernestine Payne, who survive.
He was a student at George Washington High School.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sisters, Jessica Payne of Danville and Dionne Payne of Omaha, NE.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Bibleway Worldwide Church Cathedral with the Rev. James Stewart officiating. Interment will follow in the Floral Hills Memory Gardens Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 4-8 p.m. at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Linwood Payne Sr., 341 Stephens Street.

Shelby Jean Toler Maxey
RANDLEMAN, N.C. - Shelby Jean Toler Maxey died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital.
Born in Danville, VA, she was the daughter of Johnnie Lester and Gladys Brooks Toler, who predeceased her.
She was a faithful employee of Bristol Myers-Squibb until her retirement. She was a member of Philadelphia Baptist Chapel.
She was married to Raymond E. Maxey Sr.
In addition to her husband, of the residence, she is survived by one daughter, Cynthia Maxey Allen of Greensboro; three sons, Raymond E. Maxey Jr of Greensboro, Johnny Lewis Maxey of Seagrove and Richard Lee Maxey of Climax; two sisters, Linda Toler McKinney and Patsy Toler Eanes, both of Danville; two brothers, James Larry Taylor of Rutherfordton and Lester Carroll Toler of Danville; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by one brother, Ronald Wade Toler and one sister, Cathy Toler Staley.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Philadelphia Baptist Chapel with the Rev. Joe Chandler officiating. Entombment will be in Lakeview Memorial Park Mausoleum.

John Alfred Needy Jr.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - John Alfred Needy Jr., 84, of 1130 Cheddington Drive, died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003 at his residence.
Born Feb. 14, 1914, in Ada, Ohio, he was the son of John Alfred and Stella Payne Needy.
He graduated from Ohio Northern Ohio University in 1940 with a degree in Physical Education and from Columbia University in 1947 with a Masters degree in Physical Education.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a Chief Petty Officer and was an instructor in Gene Tunney's Physical program 1942-1945.
He taught physical education, health and coached at Brevard Jr. College, State Teacher's College in Oswego, N.Y., Belton High School in Belton, S.C., East Mecklenburg High School, Charlotte, Pfeiffer College, Misenheimer, N.C., South Mecklenburg High School and McClintock Jr. High, both in Charlotte and ended his teaching career at Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte as Chairman of the Health, PE and Recreation Department from 1967-1983.
He was umpiring and refereeing softball, baseball, football and basketball all over Mecklenburg County up until his 75th birthday in 1993. He was the oldest acive softball umpire in Mecklenburg County when he retired officiating.
He was an original member of the Charlotte Sportsman Club, a member and past president of the Queen City Optimist Club, and a member of several state and national coach's organizations. He was also a member of the Ownbey Sunday School Class of Myers Parks United Methodist Church and served in many capacities of outreach service to his church. He was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church.
He was married to Carol Rogers Needy.
In addition to his wife, of the residence, he is survived by two sons, John A. Needy III of Spartanburg, S.C. and William B. Needy of Danville; one daughter, Carole Needy Scovel of Charlotte; one stepson, Charles M. Billings IV of Charlotte; one stepdaughter, Catherine Billings Biggs of Raleigh, N.C.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held 2 p.m. Monday at Myers Park United Methodist Church. Following the service the family received friends at the church. Interment was 11 a.m. Tuesday at Fairview Memorial Park in Albemarle, N.C. with Dr. Julian Aldridge officiating.

Louise Price
PELHAM, N.C. - Louise Price, 91, of 75 Brandon Road, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003 at the Brian Center Nursing Home in Yanceyville, N.C.
Born Dec. 6, 1911, in Oxford, N.C., she was a daughter of George Bassett and Louise Downey Bassett.
She was the last survivor of 18 children.She was married to Wilbur Price, who predeceased her.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel, with Elder Clarence Saunders officiating. Interment will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery.
