Emmett Clark

CHATHAM, Va. - Emmett Henry Clark, 73, of 181 Lanier Lane died Monday, June 25, 2001, at Danville Regional Hospital.
Born June 12, 1928, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Charles M. and Cleopatra Clark.
He was married to Juanita W. Clark, who survives. He retired from the United States Department of Agriculture as a tobacco grader. He was also a farmer.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include three daughters, Lisa Carol Clark, Regina C. Rosser and Jacqueline Michele Clark, all of Chatham; three sisters, Sarah Wimbush and Lorene Witcher, both of Chatham, and Dorothy Johnson of Dayton, Ohio; two brothers, Leland Clark and Richard Clark, both of Chatham.
The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jefferson Goode officiating. Interment icon will follow at Clarktown Presbyterian Church cemetery, Chatham.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his daughter, 220 Neighborhood Road, Chatham.
Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mildred Finley Cobb

DANVILLE, Va. - Mildred Finley Cobb, 91, of Durham, NC, died Monday, June 25, 2001 at Stratford Health Center. Mrs. Cobb was the mother of Sarah C. Gregory of 509 Dogwood Drive, Danville.
Born December 24, 1909 in Lauren, SC, she was the daughter of the late John Lee and Margaret Martin Finley. She was a 1931 graduate of Watts Hospital School of Nursing and prior to her retirement she was a registered nurse at McPherson’s Hospital, Durham. She was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Durham.
She was married November 26, 1938 to John Wilson Cobb, who died July 30, 1977.
Survivors, in addition to her daughter, include a son-in-law, Edmond C. Gregory of Danville, a son, John Wilson Cobb and daughter-in-law, Rose Marie Craig, of Denver, CO, grandchildren M. Scott Cobb of Denver, Eric C. Cobb of Arvada, CO, Amanda R. Jernigan of Myrtle Beach, SC, Karla M. Craig of Denver, Allison Gregory Stone and Jeffery D. Stone of Houston, TX, Caroline C. Gregory of Knoxville, TN, and two great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by one brother, Fred F. Finley of Burlington, NC, and two sisters, Virginia Finley Young of Charleston, SC, and Helen Wright Young of Lexington, NC.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 am Thursday, June 28, 2001, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Durham, by the Rev. James W. Mathieson, with burial at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Saint Luke’s Memorial Fund, Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church, 1737 Hillandale Road, Durham, NC 27705.
The family will be at the Gregory home on Dogwood Drive.

Octavia Doss

GRETNA, Va. - Octavia Haskins Doss, age 81, died Saturday, June 30, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 8, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Odie Haskins and Alice Watson Haskins.
She was married to Wilsie B. Doss Sr., who predeceased her. She was a member of New Bethel Church of the Brethren and was a homemaker.
Survivors include four sons, Linwood Doss of Gretna, Wayne Doss of Gretna, Wilsie Doss Jr. of Chatham and Carroll Doss of Gretna; four daughters, Jean Doss of Gretna, Mozelle Doss of Penhook, Sarah Lane of Greensboro, N.C. and Sandra Hodges of Chatham; one brother, Pete Haskins of Chatham; one sister, Elva Atkins of Chatham; 19 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by one son, Henry Clarence Doss; one brother, Mickey Haskins and one grandson.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at New Bethel Church of the Brethren with the Rev. Joe Glass and the Rev. Gene Ashworth officiating. Interment icon will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Colbert-Moran Funeral home and other times at the residence of her daughter, 703 Henry St., Gretna.
Colbert-Moran Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Carl Finley

DANVILLE, Va. - Carl Ray Finley, 79, of 903 Jefferson St., Danville, VA, died Friday, June 29, 2001, 10:20 PM, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born October 19, 1921, in Wythe County, VA, he was the son of James A. Finley and Winnie Grace Semones Finley - both deceased.
He was married to Blanche Harrie Finley - Living. He was of the Methodist Faith, served in US Army during WWII, Pacific area in the Medical Corp. Lived in Danville since 1945, where he worked at Dan River, Inc. for 38 years in #1 Card Room, retired at age 62.
Survivors include Wife: Blanche Harris Finley of Residence; 1 Daughter: Carol Finley Sawyers of Residence; Brother-in-law Ray E. Harris of Residence; Twin-Brother Bert C. Finley of Fieldale, VA; Step-Brother Walter Sawyers of Collinsville, VA; Grandson Jerry W. Sawyers, Jr. of Eden, NC; 2 Great Grandchildren of Eden, NC.
He was predeceased by 4 Brothers: Earl Finley, Carles Sawyer, Roy Sawyer and Vernon Sawyer and 1 Sister Florence Hanks.
The graveside service will be held Monday, July 2, 2001 at 2 PM at Graveside, Floral Hills Memory Gardens with the Rev. Neal Isom officiating. Burial will take place at Floral Hills Memory Gardens with military honors performed by Dan River Post 1097 American Legion.
The family will receive friends Sunday night from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times the family will be at 1149 Franklin Turnpike home of Mildred Isom.

Evone Fitz

DANVILLE, Va. - Evone Naomi Fitz, 50, 3658 Highway 29 North, Danville, Virginia died Tuesday, June 26, 2001, at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born October 5, 1950 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Elmer Fitz and Naomi Harden Fitz, who survives. Ms. Fitz was last employed as an inspector with the Durham Hosiery Company.
In addition to her mother, survivors include two sisters, Betty Jean Newman (John) and Izetta Ferrell, both of Danville; and three brothers, Elmer Fitz Jr. of Rocky Mount, Virginia, Delano Fitz (Cynthia), Jeremiah Fitz Sr. (Rosylind) and Sammy Ray Fitz (Jackie), all of Danville; two aunts, Lois Woods (James) of Danville, Virginia and Adner Dickerson of Greenville, South Carolina; two uncles, Bernard Fitz (Clarice) of Blairs, Virginia and Teddy Fitz (Hattie) of Danville, Virginia. She also leaves a host of devoted nieces and nephews whom she called her children, as well as many friends.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 3658 Highway 29 North, Danville, Virginia.
Funeral services for Ms. Fitz will be conducted Saturday, June 30, 2001, at 2:00 PM at the Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel, 707 Wilson Street, Danville, Virginia. Rev. Jesse Fitz will officiate. Interment icon will follow in the Highland Burial Park cemetery.
Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.

Essie Fitzgerald

DANVILLE, Va. - Essie Younger Fitzgerald, 81, of 2156 North Main St. died Thursday, June 28, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center. Her latter years were spent at the Harper’s Adult Nursing Home in Danville.
Born July 19, 1919, she was a daughter of Moses and Sallie Wimbush Younger.
She was married to Marion Fitzgerald, who predeceased her. She was last employed by Dan River Mills and was a member of the Greater Triumph Missionary Baptist Church in Chatham.
Survivors include two daughters, the Rev. Dr. Shirley Wimbish of Gretna and Marietta Jones of Jacksonville, Fla.; one son, Marion Andrew Fitzgerald of Roanoke; one sister, Lillie Robertson of Chatham; one brother, Douglas Younger of Roanoke; Cythia “Pepsi“ Clauden of Roanoke, nine grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Greater Triumph Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. B.I. Baize officiating. Interment icon will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of a daughter, the Rev. Dr. Shirley Wimbish, 581 Farmers Mountain Road, Gretna.
Miller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Theresa Harrison

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Theresa “Miss T“ Hill Harrison, 79, of 1072 Bane St. died Tuesday, June 26, 2001, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
She was born March 10, 1922, in Halifax County.
Survivors include four daughters, Jonnie Harrison-Rose of Philadelphia, Leenora Harrison, Aileen Harrison and Valarie Butler all of South Boston; one son, Vincent Harrison of South Boston; five sisters, Aileen Hill of Bronx, N.Y., Verna Phifer of Brooklyn, N.Y. Elsie Watson of New York, Deloris Prunty and Gladys Hill of Hyattesville, Md.; two brothers, George Hill of Victoria and Owen Hill of Philadelphia, Penn.; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Berry Hill Baptist Church in South Boston with the Rev. Tommy Crews Sr. officiating. Interment icon will follow in the church cemetery.
A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Bettye Hawker

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Evelyn “Bettye“ Powell Hawker, 88, of 1060 Showalter Drive died Saturday, June 29, 2001, at Montgomery Regional Hospital.
Born April 20, 1913, in Rockbridge County she was the foster daughter of Burke and Ethel Leftwich.
She was first married to Herbert A. Powell, who predeceased her in 1973, then married Howard Eeal Hawker, who predeceased her May 21, 1985. She lived in Pittsylvania County before moving to Tarboro, N.C. to live several years prior to moving back to Danville and on to Blacksburg to live the last three months. She was a graduate of the former Climax High School in Pittsylvania County, She was employed by Phoenix Triming Co. in Tarboro as a laboratory supervisor until her retirement. She was in charge of the laboratory test of webbing used in the first space walk. She was very active in the Federation of Business and Professional Women and was past President for the North Carolina. She was a member of North Main Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Raymond E. Powell of Blacksburg, two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Bill Soyars officiating. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the North main Baptist Church Bereavement Fund, 2818 North Main St., Danville, Va. 24540.

Minnie Irby

HURT, Va. - Minnie E. Irby, 94, of 4929 Level Run Road died Tuesday morning, June 26, 2001, at the residence.
Born Oct. 10, 1906, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Walker Harris and Mariah Crews Harris.
She was first married to John H. Haskins, who predeceased her, then to Walter Irby, who survives. She was a homemaker and a member of the Level Run Baptist Church where she served as a former president of the senior choir, Sunday School teacher, prayer band, usher board and the deaconess board.
Survivors, in addition to her second husband, include seven daughters, Delma Logan of Gretna, Ann Pannell of Hurt, Gracie Douglas and Gladys Davis, both of Lynchburg, Tensey Hilton, Ellen Thomas and Pearl Garvin all of Philadelphia, Penn.; one son, Leroy Haskins of Columbus, Ohio; one sister, Okie Roach of Gretna; one brother, Jack Harris of Hampton; 48 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and first husband, by two daughters, Odell Slayton and Peaches Haskins; one son, J.B. Haskins; three sisters, Cassie Brown, Ellen Irby and Mary Irby and three brothers, Jim, Brace and Leonard Harris.
The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Level Run Baptist Church with the Rev. Harry Braxton officiating. Interment icon will follow at the church cemetery.

Charles Koger

BROOKNEAL, Va. - Charles A. Koger, 80, of 248 Gardener Road, died Wednesday, June 27, 2001, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home.
Born June 21, 1921, in Reidsville, N.C., he was the son of Charles Koger and Mariah Watson Koger.
He was married to Virginia Koger, who survives. He was self-employed as a carpenter and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of Danville, include five sons, Charles S. Koger of Danville, Melvin Koger of Bronx, N.Y., Wayne Koger of Compton, Calif., Willie Arthur Koge of Woodbridge, Va. and Emmanuel Koger of Bronx, N.Y.; seven daughters, Betty A. Williams of Greensboro, N.C., Mae Emma Shelton of Danville, Va., Patricia Dean Grimaldi of Bronx, N.Y., Phyllis Witcher of Danville, Va., Searlet M. Howard of Danville, Va., LaVonne Ferguson of Los Angeles, Calif. and Diane Wilson of Roanoke, Va. and two sisters, Geneva Stephens of Danville, Va. and Maria Brown of White Plains, N.Y.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Cunningham and Hughes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Jasper Watkins officiating. Interment icon will follow at Oak Hill cemetery.
Viewing will be held 4-8 p.m. Sunday at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.
The family will be at the home of Charles Koger, 825 Clay St.

Everett Lawless

FIELDALE, Va. - Everett Divers Lawless, 79, of 1916 Dillons Fork Road died Thursday, June 28, 2001, at Kindred Hospital, Greensboro, N.C.
Born Nov. 15, 1921, in Henry County, he was the son of George William Lawless and Sally Jane Young Lawless. He was married to Dorothy “Bea“ Lawless, who survives.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include two daughters, Karen Self of Danville and Peggy Owens of Richmond; two sons, Michael Lawless of Martinsville and Kenneth Lawless of Winston-Salem, N.C. and 4 grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by one daughter, Becky L. Duke; three sisters, Onie Hardy, Annie Craig and Odessa Fretwell; and one brother, Letcher Lawless.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Roselawn Burial Park with the Rev. Hanna Glisson officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. at Norris Funeral Services Inc. and at other times at the residence.
The family suggests that memorials be made to Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church, 17 Mt. Bethel Circle, Fieldale, Va. 24089.
