Charlie Smith
CASCADE, Va. - Charlie Eddie Smith, 77, of 1320 Cascade Road, died Saturday, June 23, 2001, at Stratford Nursing Center in Danville.
Born Dec. 30, 1923, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Berkley and Polly Adams Smith.
He was married
to Catherine McDaniel Smith, who survives.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two daughters, Robin J. Smith of Richmond and Karen Davis of Ashburn; four sons, Gary Smith of Cascade, Rickey Smith of Chesapeake, Karl Smith of Danville and Byron Smith of Collinsville; one sister, Lelia Lewis of Detriot, Mich.; step-mother, Ruby Smith and ten grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Cascade with the Rev. John W. Tinsley officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Edna Arnold
RINGGOLD, Va. - Edna Brummitt Arnold, 71, of 821 Albert Edmonds Drive, died Tuesday, July 3, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center after five days in the hospital and five years of declining health.
Born Aug. 19, 1929, in Danville, she was the daughter of Frank Brummitt and Daisy Bowles Brummitt.
She was married
to Robert Daniel Arnold, who survives. She lived most of her life in Danville and Pittsylvania County and lived in Ringgold for the past 30 years where she was a member of Faith Baptist Church. She worked for Dan River Inc. before her retirement.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include two daughters, Judy Rea of Martinsville and Susan Kirks of Ridgeway; one son, Robert D. Arnold Jr. of Danville; three sisters, Mable Colston of Bassett, Betty Poole of Semora, N.C. and Peggy Martin of Stuart and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ben Poovey and the Rev. Gene Arnold officiating. Interment
will follow at Henry Memorial Park on Highway 220.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Timothy Beadles
DANVILLE, Va. - Timothy Doss Beadles, 45, of 261 Bowe St., died July 2, 2001, at the residence.
Born Sept. 3, 1955, in Halifax County, he was the son of Doss Beadles and Georgia Hamlett Beadles.
He was married
to Janice Dalton Beadles, who predeceased him. He was a member of Ellis Creek Baptist Church and worked for Dan River Mills. He was a sergeant with Richmond Security.
Survivors include two sisters, Eunice B. Lloyd and Joan B. Perkins, both of South Boston; two brothers, Dewey Beadles of South Boston and Phillip Beadles of Crystal Hill; one stepdaughter, April Goggin of Raleigh, N.C. and one stepson, James Goggin of Danville.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rodney Barwick officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

Ernest Chalmers
DANVILLE, Va. - Ernest Eugene Chalmers, 65, of 316 Cunningham St., died Friday, June 29, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 23, 1935, in Halifax County, he was the son of Ivory Chalmers and Roberta Richardson Chalmers.
He was married
to Mamie Chalmers, who predeceased him. He was a former employee of Diamond Paper Company.
Survivors include one daughter, Geraldine Townes of Richmond; one stepson, Carl Bethea of Danville; one brother, Harvey Chalmers of Danville and one sister, Camella Mimms of Yanceyville, N.C.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park cemetery.

Charles Dickens
DANVILLE, Va. - Charles “Jack“ Dickens, 97, of 25 Dallas Ave., died Monday, July 2, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
He had been a patient at Roman Eagle Memorial Home for 22 months.
Born May 19, 1904, in Wyth County, he was the son of Cornelious Marion Dickens and Jettie Vaughan Dickens.
He was married
to Alleyne Knick, who survives. He worked as a welder before his retirement and was a member of the Plumbers and Pipe-Fitters Union. He was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include one son, Randolph “Bud“ Dickens of Brosville; one daughter, Barbara Hatch of San Antonio, Texas; one brother, Luther Dickens of Danville; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by five brothers and five sisters.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Chapel. Interment
will follow at Mt. View cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Laura Fitzgerald
Altavista, Va. - Laura Reese Stone Fitzgerald, 100, formerly of Danville, died Sunday, July 1, 2001.
Born July 19, 1900, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Samuel R. Stone and Laura Reese Smith Stone.
She was married
to J.W. Fitzgerald Sr., who predeceased her. She graduated from Averett College in Danville and Phillips Business College in Roanoke with honors and taught at Mt. Airy Elementary School.
She was a hostess at Radford Women’s College and served as a federal agent for educating foreign children in Atlanta, Ga. for ten years.
She returned to Virginia and was a member of Shockoe Baptist Church.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Stone Family cemetery near Mt. Airy with the Rev. Latta Terry officiating.
The family will be at the residence of Christine Stone, 1617 Melinda Drive in Altavista.

Edna Hazelwood
DANVILLE, Va. - Edna Hyler Hazelwood, age 82, of 21 Laurel Avenue, died Monday afternoon July 2, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Hazelwood was born in Pittsylvania County on August 9, 1918, a daughter of the late Robert Hyler and Sallie Haynes Hyler.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Franklin Hazelwood.
Mrs. Hazelwood spent her early years in the Hickory Grove community of Rockingham County, North Carolina and had spent most of her adult life in Danville where she retired in 1983 from Dan River, Inc. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and the Fidelis Dorcas Sunday School Class.
She is survived by two daughters: Dorothy H. Allen of Blairs and Carrie H. Merricks of Danville, and a son in law: Raymond Boyd of Danville, and she was predeceased by a daughter, Arlene H. Boyd.
Other survivors include two brothers: Wesley L. Hyler of Danville, and Robert “Jack“ Hyler of Ruffin, North Carolina, and three sisters: Irene H. Gatewood and Connie H. Hall both of Danville, and Arstine H. Marshall of Pelham, North Carolina, and one granddaughter: Sherri Merricks Bauguess of Danville, and two grandsons: John F. Allen of Virginia Beach, and Scott Allen of Lakeland, Florida, and one great grandson: Adam Robert Bauguess of Danville, and one great granddaughter: Taylor Rae Bauguess of Danville.
She was also predeceased by a brother, Arthur Hyler.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. J. Richard Markham. Interment
will follow at the Hickory Grove United Methodist Church cemetery in Rockingham County, North Carolina. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 7:00-8:30 P.M., and at other times at the residence of her granddaughter, Sherri Bauguess at 121 Cathy Drive.

Mattie Herndon
DRY FORK, Va. - Mattie Sue Herndon, 83, of 1268 Hutson Road, died Sunday, July 1, 2001, at the residence.
Born Nov. 13, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Willie Arthur Herndon and Mary Sue Walton Herndon.
Survivors include three sisters, Lillian Vernize Hodge of Washington, D.C., Mary Herndon Jones of the residence and the Rev. Margaret Ann Herndon of Richmond.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by three sisters, Virginia May Herndon, Carolyn Francis Bowman and Mabel Marie Herndon.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Guildfield Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Willard Smith officiating. Interment
will follow at Herndon Family cemetery.

Ronald Horsley
AXTON, Va. - Ronald Gene Horsley, age 46, of 7496 Medical Center Road, Axton, died Tuesday evening July 3, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Horsley was born in Danville on December 26, 1954, a son of the late Billy Gene Horsley and Doris Turman Bowling who survives, and was also the stepson of Clarence Bowling who survives and Shirley Horsley who survives. Mr. Horsley had spent most of his life in the Danville area where he was of the Baptist faith. He had been in declining health since last August and he worked for Eden Yarns textiles as a mechanic before going on disability in October 2000.
Survivors in addition to his mother and step father of Danville and his step mother also of Danville include one son: Anthony Scott Horsley and daughter in law Tiffany Horsley of Hillsville, and one daughter and son in law: Tonya Kay Myers and Jeffrey Myers of Fancy Gap and two brothers: Terry Dale Horsley and sister in law Janice Horsley and Mickey Thomas Horsley and sister in law Kimberly Horsley all of Danville, and one sister and brother in law: Gayla Thompson and Leonard Thompson of Greensboro, North Carolina, and three grandchildren: Zac Myers, Desiree Myers, and Troy Myers, and three nieces and two nephews: Heather, Amanda, Sabrina, Chris, and Tony, and his maternal grandmother: Maudie Turman of Hillsville, and a host of loving family and friends also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 4:00 P.M. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. James Mayes and Rev. Jimmy Hussey. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 7:00 - 8:30 P.M., and at other times at the residence of his mother and step father, Doris and Clarence Bowling at 2886 Westover Drive, and also at the home of his step mother, Shirley Horsley at 815 Holland Road.

Mary Leftwich
CHATHAM, Va. - Mary Emma Leftwich, 84, of 6861 Strawberry Road, died Monday, July 2, 2001, at Riverside Health Care Center in Danville.
Born June 30, 1917, she was the daughter of Annie Mack Grant.
She was married
to Virgous Leftwich who predeceased her.
Survivors include one stepson, Stanley White of California and one brother, George Grant of Lumberton, N.C.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Union Hall Baptist Church with Sherman Craft officiating. Interment
will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
